It's not a majority but it seems prevalent now more than ever post-covid. I think it's good that women have the option to choose either way, but it seems like a number of them are taking a second look and deciding the old ways don't seem so terrible.
>>28169531I'm seeing it too. Methinks it's been a reaction to MGTOW, and 'where have all the good men gone?' New angles are being tried to catch the simps they require.

>>28155121what I fail to understand is the economics herePontiac Star Chief cost about 3 000 dollars when new in 1957. About 33 500 dollars nowadays. The median family income was about 5 000 dollars in 1957, so a new Pontiac was about 60% of it.If the Pontiac lasts 100k miles and in 50s the average miles driven was 10k, that means that the car lifespan is just ten years - and the price is spread out across ten years. An median family would spend 6% of their income in just the sticker price of the car a year, plus gas (about 250 dollars a year in 1957), repairs, insurance etc. All in all at least 10, probably closer to 12% of household income to support a single car. An equivalent to a Toyota Corolla costing 10 000 dollars a year. And people were not only okay, but actively going for two cars? How?

>>28178618All the more depressing that GM stifled their creativity for years after this and Olds fizzled out in the early 00's, remembered by most as little more than another GM Chevy Pontiac Buick badgejob.Cadillac may have had the prestige and the opulence but I reckon an argument could be made that Oldsmobile at it's peak was also the peak of GM as a whole.
>>28178708glass roof wagons are sex but god it must have sucked riding in the back, like a stifling greenhouse
For me, it's the first gen Toronado and both how good the ad is and how sex the car is. Genuinely great advertising taglines. Step out front in '66, since it's FWD, advertising how well it handles (not included in this ad: when they took it to Pikes Peak and won), and probably my favorite:>Look to Olds for the New!Probably the single best indicator, even more than Olds-Mobility, that no one ever had a problem with the marque's name having 'Old' in it until the bean counters tried saying that's the reason they failed after the awful "Not your father's Oldsmobile" campaign.
>>28179262I wish any of the ads I could find showed the interior/dash view, though. Best fucking speedometer ever.
>>28179262>>28179264Based Toro appreciator
>>28179281I think regularly about those hard-edged fender flares and how they were absolutely unique at the time and now some 60 years later, that's just the 'default' shape for a wheel well on damn near every vehicle on the road, albeit with less pronounced inwards taper and without the lower-half body crease that it flows into on the Olds to add that cool layered effect. Those motherfuckers in Lansing were so far ahead of the game it's not even funny. Probably no surprise Ford gently borrowed it for the first gen Cougar.>Googled the slab sided part on a whim>even Jaslopnik doesn't mention the Toronado in their article about this 'new design feature that may have slipped by your nose'>someone in the comments points out the '66 Toro and someone replies with "The Toronado was the first car to make many design elements ugly."I will find this man and I will destroy him.
>>28179264I fucking love weird types of automotive gauges so much man
>>28179296Interesting you brought up the Cougar, because I used to always mistake them for Oldsmobiles at first glance. At first I figured it was just because of the split grille design, but, now I wonder if part of it was because of the wheel arch design you mentioned.>I will find this man and I will destroy him.I agree. Slit him open and burn his nipples.
>>28179659i can kinda see it, mostly the grille and the back quarters with the raised edge remind me of the 70s cutlass supreme and grand prix
>>28179659Similar year Cutlasses had a similar arch flare, but it didn't have the fully flat outer edge like the Toro does. However...
>>28179689...the next major Cutlass redesign in '68 with the other GM midsizers wound up recreating that hard edge side, but only in stencil paint form, and only on the W-30 package. Even though the car underneath doesn't have the Toronado slab-side fenders, and the Toronado itself lost those flares in 1970.
>>28179686Funnily, Olds didn't start putting split grilles on Cutlasses until 68, so if anything they could've actually borrowed that from Mercury
>>28179698>the Toronado itself lost those flares in 1970Another reason the 70 Toronado just looks wrong to me. I mean it's not horrible, but....feels like they took too much inspiration from the Charger.
It peaked in 68 and 69. Sexy sleek fender flares along with classy grill mounted hidden headlights
>>28180311i love how different ads for the same company and same family of car can bedr. olds is my nigga
>>28180316I agree, the 68 and 69 were already pushing it with the new thin-at-the-sizes grille and front end instead of the original sloped front. '70 tried to combine them by bringing back the original jutting fender corners but it just looks so silly with those little headlights tucked into the center grille all sad-like, and the rest of the body itself just isn't as pretty.
>>28180320>And that masterful ride and handling, thanks to the superior traction of FRONT-WHEEL DRIVE>the "i could beat that in my civic" pasta already existed half a century agofug
>>28180358Dr. Olds needs to come back and breathe some life into GM's performance portfolio. Pontiac is gone, Oldsmobile is gone, the Camaro is gone, what's left? Just the Corvette? And the Cadillac V cars i guess.
