>>28157367>Its the everything else that's the bastard on those cars aka hydropneumatic suspensionYeah, this was exactly my thought.>I have this hunch that they aren't even that expensive parts wise its just the all the workRight on the money, the parts aren't really hard to find or all the expensive, it's just that no normal garage will work on them, and becuase of that, can specialists charge out of the arse.My biggest concern is the transmission, if that's the case. That TH400 is quite popular, but I have no idea what manual trans would match the same bolt pattern. Don't even care of it comes out of a truck, as long as its at least a 4 speed.
>>28157529the toploader is a pretty ubiquitous 4 speed, ford made it but GM also used it. T10 is another GM option, but perhaps at your experience level you should just leverage the TH400 already being in the car.
>>28157593The T-10 was shared by Ford and GM, not the toploader. Toploader was uniquely Ford and GM went on to do their Muncie and Saginaws.
>>28157593I've got no problems with doing the work, I just need to know what fits what as GM stuff isn't exactly common here in Blighty. Has to be manual, no exceptions, so If I can buy a trans that just bolts right up, rather than having to worry about adaptor plates and the like, then that would be ideal. That being said, from what little I've researched, It seems that the bellhousings are bespoke but the actual TH side of things are "universal" GM or Buick Nailhead, which might raise more questions that it answers. I'm honestly very confused. I wish I still had my dad's rolls here to reference.
>>28157715to clarify, the 3 speed variant of the toploader was used by GM. You could podge together a 4 speed ford unit to put behind a GM engine.
>>28157738Ah. Yes then that is correct. I think some 3+1 granny geared toploaders found their way to GM assembly lines for a short time as well.
>>28157726So it seems like the Rolls bellhousing pattern is actually the same as a Buick Nailhead? If that's the case, does the nailhead pattern have any manual 4 speed options, or would I have to say fuck it and get this adaptor?
>>28157726>bespokeProprietary.Rolls Royce manufactured transmissions under license, they didn't buy them from GM, so I am sure there are differences throughout.
>>28157856bespoke, proprietary, same difference. It fits one thing and one thing only. That being said, as I found out here >>28157838, it might not be as proprietary as I originally thought
>>28157838It does but you might be better off with that adapter.
>>28157861Wrong.Good luck with your build, esl.
>>28157838its called BOPR, the gen 1 buick nailhead, 215, gen 1 pontiac engines, olds gen 1, and the rover 3.9/4.0 use itthe buick and oldsmobiles with this bell had 2 3 speeds, one is a 6 bolt top cover, one is a 5 bolt top cover, i CANNOT remember which one is the HD unit. It's possible the rovers shipped with a different manual that could also work
>>28157882Rover would have had the LT77 or R308 that may be able to be used in that case.Though from what I remember of LT77 V8 bell housings it looks quite a bit different to anon's pictures
>>28157869Eh, you might be right there. That's a shame.>>28157882>and the rover 3.9/4.0 use itThat would have been unbelievably useful, as those gearboxes are well catered to here, but as Twink >>28157891 said, I can't seem to find a Rover gearbox with that bellhousing pattern at all. A couple of bolts here and there look like they *might* line up, but for the most part they're completely unrelated. Quite disappointing... Still, at least I there is an aftermarket solution of some kind and I don't have to fab something up myself. Thanks guys, I appreciate the help.
>>28157915Its a shame Rolls/Bentley never went racing, that would at least give you an idea of what would fit. There was likely a 4 speed fitted to the Rover V8 that may be slightly different though I don't know much about those boxes.
>>28157738>>28157741now that i think about it, i have said 3 speed toploader that came with the 360FE from a cleanup last year, i wonder what is needed to fit a ford style unit to a chevy. my lemons camaro needs a manual, these are tough as nails and free is the right price
>>28157933>Its a shame Rolls/Bentley never went racing, that would at least give you an idea of what would fit.It kind of surprises me, because their engines are quite stout and probably would've done alright even in endurance racing. Aluminium block and heads, fully forged internals, and plenty of displacement on the table to make power with, but then again, I suppose that was more Bentley's bag and they bowed out of racing in the 30's.>There was likely a 4 speed fitted to the Rover V8 that may be slightly different though I don't know much about those boxes.Good boxes and cheap to buy and repair if needed, but further research shows absolutely no crossover with the Rolls' bolt pattern, which is again quite disappointing as that would have been so easy to source. I think I've settled for a short ratio Muncie M21 or M22 for now, but next problem is the clutch. Not gonna lie, I'm a bit in over my head, but everyone has to start somewhere. I'm thinking that I can maybe start with this kit and then adapt when necessary, but things like the clutch linkage are a kind of "by the seat of your pants" deal. The car being RHD makes me wonder if a hydraulic clutch conversion would be easier, but that's assuming I even follow through with this dumb idea.
>>28158149Turn down the input shaft pilot surface and shorten it as well. I think there is a bellhousing to trans interface bolt issue as well, but not quite sure. It's possible the GM input is also 1 1/8" in diameter whereas the Ford may be 1 1/16", but that would be a case-by-case basis.
>>28158166Yeah I guess racing isn't a luxury brands game and its not like BL where racing sells cars.>The car being RHD makes me wonder if a hydraulic clutch conversion would be easier, but that's assuming I even follow through with this dumb idea. You are driving something with a luxury car engine, not a truck. Do the bare minimum and have a hydraulic clutch.
>>28158185i suppose i need the sbc version bellhousing to do this, on marketplace the 3 speed saginaws are much more common with everything ready to go for $150-250, they would hold up to a 305 or L99 right?

An alternative homebrew solution is to just use water and dish soap, and some models of cleaner even suggest so in the manual. To test if your cleaner is safe to use with aluminium, ultra clean some aluminium foil in whatever solution you choose to use first, and if it creates holes in the foil then you know it'll be too aggressive.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bf_zn3BgAeY
Update on the fuckery with the GalaxieSo I went into the fuckers shop last week with my letter in hand with being ready to sue, but his secretary pissed me off and I lost it. Long story short, he's refunding me all the money I paid and I SHOULD be picking it up this afternoon (we'll see).As far as the engine goes... Turns out it didn't need a rebuild... Both manifolds were warped/cracked. The reason I couldn't find an exhaust leak is cause both were blowing basically down onto the head (so hard to put your hand down on a hot engine block/exhaust). Been a massive pain in the ass to find replacement manifolds. Apparently it's used sets or a pair for like $800+ (which at that point I might as well get headers and exhaust).

So most of the automakers say that the late 70s downsized full size cars had MORE interior room than the big cars. I find this hard to be true desu. Cuda-Anon here again, with a GTX Question. This '67 Plymouth GTX was picked up by the family many years ago, with a numbers-matching Hemi in it, but the strange part, is the rear wheel wells. The "story" attached to the car, is that it was a factory ordered drag car, that the order was cancelled when the car was 60% complete, then made street legal to get rid of at a dealership. The strangest part, is the rear wheel wells. They're ginormous, but with perfectly-matched chrome trim. Plus, the whole car looks to have an altered wheel base. When it was running, the Hemi would not even idle correctly without 110+ octane fuel. Is the "story" even remotely possible? Right, so the Vanden Plas is running *way* too cold at all times. Thought it was pretty cool that all the gauges worked, but the heater has always blown cold, which was a bit of a red flag for me. I wacked one of these temp strips ( https://www.demon-tweeks.com/eu/racetech-temperature-indicators-249593/ ) on the rubber coolant piping after the thermostat housing, just to get actual numbers, and despite the car's gauge reading just over ideal temp, the sticker hasn't seen even a lick of colour change. Great. So, that being said, how would I go about getting the gauge to read the correct temperature? It uses a bimetallic strip to actually move the needle, but the connection to the engine is electrical and not a capillary tube, so is there something I can do to "nudge" the signal/voltage of the current sender up or down, or do I have no choice but to experiment with finding a new temp sender?
Went to pull the steering wheel on the K10 to replace the turn signal switch, and the female puller threads were rusted to shit and fuckedhow the hell does that happen?
>>28167668First thing I'd try is just unplug the sender and see if the gauge moves. Second would be to ground the sender wire to see if the gauge moves the other way. If not then most likely a bad gauge, or possibly an open circuit at a connector.I will try this, but my concern is that because the engine didn't come with that car, the gauge just isn't setup correctly for that engine's sender, and whoever did the swap just assumed it was fine because the needle moved. I know the gauge works, it does seem to move up and down as air flow increases or decreases through the rad, but if the sender is sending a lower or higher voltage than what the gauge is setup to read, is there anything I can do to *nudge* that signal up or down, or would I HAVE to find a new sensor that'll send information to the gauge in the voltage it expects?

Any of you guys know anything about returnless efi fuel systems? I was thinking about Using a late 90s jeep cherokee fuel tank (single line/no return) and regulating the pressure from 55~psi down to carb levels. Then I could use quiet, OEM quality pumps and get a bump in fuel capacity. BUT idk if 50-60~ psi would damage the regulator without a return line. I still have the factory return line on the frame rail, but I don't think there would be a provision for the return line on the tank. Unless I could make one (it's a plastic tank).Or I could just use an electric inline pump like a holley blue (I have read a bunch of reviews of them crapping out. alternatives?) and regulate it like normal and stop trying to overcomplicate things.
>>28171999Doesn't EFI run such a high pressure to feed the injectors that the regulator is on the return lines?Just punch a hole on top of the tank and fit a return line inlet, epoxy for good measure.
>>28172001From what I've read, this particular tank has a regulator built into the pump module. >just punch a holethat would be a pretty easy solution. thanks
>>28172007Just remember that your return line discharge point has to be below the fuel level or it results in lots of vapor generation in the tank. The discharge point should also point away from the pickup.
I was helping the ztard with his turbo s130 and it has no spark. Coil ohmed out around 850, probably good, cranked it and the coil negative was never breaking. I didn't have time to go read a bunch of internet lore on this but it looks like the computer reads the optical crank sensor and generates the tach signal. Told him to take the dizzy out and leave it plugged in and turn it slowly to see if it was making the signal but without my oscilloscope I can't think of another way to test this. Whole car has been rained in and I anticipated lots of electronic issues, we've already talked about megasquirt. I don't really like the optical distributer, what stops us from putting a non-turbo one in here and running batch fire on the megasquirt? It would seem nothing.
>>28171999I would see if you can get/adapt a complete fuel pump assembly to drop into the fuel gauge sender unit hole.Inline pumps suck ass.

Went to the parts store to get the seal and o-ring, came up and pulled the tube to find that it's broken off right where the o-ring sits. lmao. it must've fallen into the pan long ago (hopefully)now i need a whole new tube. luckily it's only $18 on amazog
ztard wanted to do everything but test the cas proper. wanted to check injector pulse. no injector pulse. took the cap off yes it's rotating. took the dizzy out and spun it, no the fuel pump doesn't kick on. finally he bit the bullet and checked if it's getting a 5v ref, it is. it output 5v a time or two but is unresponsive. literally took all day texting back and forth when this should've been 15 minutes. CAS is ordered. hopefully this was painful for him too and beat the redneck diagnostic thinking out of him

I'm interested in some '50s cars I found locally. I have the opportunity to buy either 1 or a pair of '58 T-birds or a '59 Edsel Ranger. Man told me 1600$ for the Edsel but I didn't know about the T-birds when I asked.Man also has this picrel Chevy but I don't know dick about it. A quarter panel window in cracked but cars complete. The Edsel is behind it, also complete. Dont have pics of the t-birds.Any pointers or dos and don'ts? I have an engine hoist, stands and not exactly an amateur mechanic
>>28175163If the two T-birds gets you enough good parts to make 1 functioning T-bird, that's the winning ticket. If they're both basket cases then it doesn't matter, whatever lights your fire.
>>28175163Do you want "restored" or "looks restored/custom but non matching numbers"?Because if the shell is complete with glass, trim and shit like door handles then the drivetrain is an easy swap to something more common.Even if the seats are trashed you can rebat and reupholster the metal framework if they're intact. If they're missing or rusted to nothing then it's a whole other story to replace. So of course you want as complete as possible but I'd rather start with a good shell and fab some motor mounts for a 60's small block then try to find replacement body panels. They're all good choices so go with what's more complete or what YOU like, ignore everyone else's opinion on "what's cool".

>>28171905If you're building it for horsepower, yeah that's stupid. But if you're building it to put in a truck and haul/tow, it's better than a similar displacement v8 due to more bottom end torque because of the more under square design and long intake runners.Having timing gears instead of a chain is nice too.But yeah, not for speed, that's retarded, they're truck engines.
>>28176201The eec-iv intakes are really nice pieces. Under/over square really doesn't affect torque as much as it affects efficiency. The 6.8 V10, as a result, is a really nice towing engine and I got 13.5mpg out of mine empty. 351 is great and a 408w is better, really only the 460 and 302 are letdowns. The odds are never in favor of modifying 6 cylinders, there are no aftermarket heads for the 300, and the stock one sucks. With extensive port work you can bring E7's to 200cfm, assuming the same for a 300, they'll support ~300hp with way more work than is ever reasonable.

Carbon deposits or even head gaskets can make one larger than the other so of course power is "similar".And yet youre looking at a 10% difference in torque and 25% difference in hp.I like shaft mounted rockers and gear drive. But it's still just a base model option that gets piston slap at the same rate as a V8.It's not a magical design. It does not deserve the cult folowing.

a year ago i picked up a th350 and a th400 for $20 at the local scrapyard. i took apart that th350 today. lots of sludge in the pan but all the clutches looked new. there was water and rust so the new clutches are junk, but no explanation for the clutch material everywhere. it looks like someone tried the dual feed mod and didn't block off the passage under the pump, only one check ball - the absolutely necessary one - was present. I'll clean this shit up and reassemble im stoked its not absolutely destroyed.
>>28180117>there was water and rust so the new clutches are junk, but no explanation for the clutch material everywhereWater dissolves the clutch material adhesive .So a leak between the radiator and (intergal) trans cooler is death to an automatic transmission.

Honestly, he should be paying you for the trip over there and cleaning up the mess.t. never seen any engine stored outside be worth a shit ever.
What do you people use for brake/clutch reservoir hoses if you have a separate reservoir?I've tried a lot of different hoses, hydraulic, teflon and whatnot and they all start to sweat after a month or so.I just went to a hydraulic store to ask for EPDM hose, instead they handed me NBR hose which from my testing doesn't work with dot 4 fluids, starts to seep and swell.Doesn't help that for some obtuse reason it's impossible to get anything proper in europestan, have to order from Tilton if I want proper reservoir hose

If you can't find the right hose, then I'd be tempted to do as you say and just get a hardline reservoir and make the lines out of NiCopp. At least you won't ever have to worry about them perishing or rusting again. As the link above shows, those reservoirs aren't exactly expensive. Having said that, is there no way for you to modify the existing reservoir to a hardline? It's not like that side of the braking system is under any significant pressure, so It shouldn't be too challenging in theory.

>>28186573He's gulping all the Elon sperm he can handle.
>>28186184DaaymImagine a turbo'd rusty Izh-Kombi with electrical tape around mirrors n shit to make it look like it's owned by someone's gramps
>>28186579elon wants this country to be ran by h1b's what are you talking about
>>28186620elon thinks americans are lazy retards that don't work, so they need to be replaced.
>>28186673he's right
>>28186679>you should work 100 hours a week for billionaires because.... you just should OK???
>>28186679kek yes the billionaires have your best interest in mind. he's right about YOU being a retard, though.
Jag has been reliableI am still putting off fixing the dent and headlight in the TR7, but it runs.>>28186506Just enjoy the day anon, no reason to get so heated.Could drive your car or something.
>>28186673>people who work complain about people who dont work>100+ year record of americans being lazy faggotsimagine my shock
>>28186695the billionaires want you to yas queen welfare yourself out of relevance because you're a liability. do you think they give a fuck who does the work? they don't. you had your fucking shot to work 40 hours a week and take the weekends and Christmas with a 401k contribution, its over. you fucking blew it.
>>28186708ah yes the billionaire #1 diablo player is le hardworking american. >>28186714but... that's what i'm doing. i have a factory job with a pension, my mortgage is almost paid off, looking at buying the house next door so i have side-by-side garages. if western countries would grow some balls and get nationalistic, things could get better. but it turns out MAGA was a lie. of course.
>>28186748exactly. its that fucking easy to just work like everyone the fuck else. if some fatass american is genetically filtering """theyself""" because he's not getting enough fucking welfare its his fucking fault. i hate elon he's a fucking con artist but holy shit he decided to con people instead of begging for muh welfare and paid queer holidays. anyone who expected anything but self enrichment out of this is a fucking retard>grow some balls and get nationalistictoo much self loathing on the old farts behalf and too much demoralization on the kiddos behalf, this shitholes done
>>28186748>turns outI'm gonna sound like a massive asshole, so sorry for that in advance, but literally each and every ex-eastern bloc country (except russia probably) saw that shit when Trump was just starting his campaign. He's exactly like early 2010s politicians, and he even was backed by a literal corrupt oligarch
>>28186783>this shitholes doneyou guys still live waaay fucking better than what we went through in the 90s. My granpa had to sew bags and towing lines from parachutes, had to sell his own jacket to make the ends meet and it's still better than many peoples stories from the 90sFight censorship (both lgbt flavored and maga), make sure corrupt politicians get punished-we had brilliant green dye, you have guns. Just these two things alone will make a MASSIVE difference, and yes, you alone can do it tooIt's scary to me that some districts of your biggest cities, like LA, look worse than the worst district in my city (linkrelated maps app goo gl/gnKT3Ah1JdtCSRwZA )
>>28186783but i get a month of holidays paid and i think everyone who works a decent job should get that too.
>>28186986I got layed off so I get holidays untill I run out of money again, back at square one.
>>28186986that's pretty generous, i gave up on finding a decent W2 a long time ago. I suppose i get my holiday time anytime im not working to bill time.>>28186951niggers here dont know what its like to have no rights. i married my wife in Morocco, where niggers trying to make it into europe arent paid to work, routinely kicked out of housing and beaten in the streets by their landlords and police, then rounded up and dumped in the sahara to die. And Algeria does this, and Libya, and Tunisia, and Egypt. Literally everyone in the world is extremely racist and nationalistic and these fags what they have here take it for granted. Muh reparations. Muh black history month. Muh lgbt month. Muh womens month. Muh welfare. This country is chocked full of greedy fucks who will pull the whole thing down and that does not include Muh millionaires and billionaires.
>>28187130Anon, there always were, always are, and always will be retards. The good and bad thing is, retards have herd mentality-if enough people say "thing A is good"-they'll start repeating it, and the idea that "thing A is good" will spread in geometric progression. That's why propaganda is so effective. Rn, as far as I can see, there's an extreme polarisation in the western society-everyone is ether "left" or "right"(in quotation because that's just another instrument of division), so only people with the right label get the human treatment. It shouldn't be like this. Honestly, this whole system reeks of artificiality, it's too perfect. This way, both sides have some valid points, and some batshit insane ones, so the truth is divided between two sides. And then you have the label and censorship system, to keep everyone divided-if you're "left" you aren't allowed to say anything about minorities wrongdoings, for example. It's literally 1930s soviet system, but instead of the Party's line of propaganda (narrative)and punishment, you have two narratives and two punishment systems on both sides that work purely on volunteering idiots instead of KGB, and the people who actually think just shut up out of fear of both sides, BUT, it's the wrong thing to do. If enough people speak up, this same herd mentality will help to spread the "centrist" position, which is actually just common sense
>>28187210'everyone adopting common sense' seems like quite the stretch to me, everyone is disconnected from reality. Russians loved stalin because he defeated hitler, they had seen the war firsthand, and mourned him for weeks when he died. We in the west know bullet points and history text books, and read he was a power hungry nut who destroyed everything Lenin built. The difference between a dictator and a king is perspective. The position of centralized power is inevitable.
brehs, I'm so tempted to take this on. I love how 450SLs look and I've been wanting a project for a while now.
>>28187488manual swap
>>28187493that was my first thought lmao, I'd definitely want to put a manual in.my main concern though would be figuring out where this guy left off, and who knows if he lost any parts.
>>28187488find a 280sl that someone doesn't know what they have, all 6 cyl r107's are euro models, look much nicer, engine is much nicer, much more aftermarket support. 77 should have the 3 speed auto, avoid the 4 speed auto, models made '81+. americans got cucked versions of the v8s and k-jetronic is trash for what it is, a 450sl makes ~190hp. The timing guides require disassembling most of the engine because the timing cover is part of the block. A foxbody pan should clear if you want to 302 swap it. Lots of W123 parts fit and W126 parts can be used as upgrades ie vented disks.
>>28187554well, I'm not looking specifically for a mercedes, I was just tempted by this one.>280slI don't like how those look. much prefer the 450, but due to your post I'll probably have to pass on this one.
>>28187563>I don't like how those lookthey're identical. basically with any euro car the best things you can do with them are put *other* stock parts on them, and if they didnt come from the factory with something you simply arent doing it. The mercedes v8 never shipped with a manual. BMW's did and they're much better cars of this era.
>>28187568oh I just searched 280sl and it came up with a different car, I should've entered the year toowell if a 280sl that's partially torn down shows up in my area I'll probably take it on as a project
>>28186528>>fuck it i need a 4 day work weekit's ironic because a lot of places where they trialled this the workers had increased productivity because they felt like the week was shorter, so they'd try to get more done even though it was the same hours. i wonder how much of it is also because for about an hour or two you don't have as many people walking up to your desk and interrupting you.and i dunno about you but personally i prefer to spend more time with my family and hobbies than at work. i don't think there's anyone in recorded history that ever said on their deathbed that they wished they spent more time working.
>>28187724My 2 days in the office are the only time I am away from my kids. It's honestly a nice break. I feel bad that my wife doesn't ever get that break.
BTW...PoorOldNiggerThinksIt'sACadillac
>>28187727If you think racism is funny on a blue board, it's really not dude. Take that to /b/. Really disrespectful to this general.
>>28187728 break your neck
>>28187285>mourned him for weeks when he diedYea no lol. Do you know why GAZ M1 is a scary car?
>>28187749based Greased Geese
>>28187728eat shit fag
>>28187724>>28187726It's probably a mental illness, I cannot just sit around and do nothing. I cannot sit through more than an episode of TV if the trash they play now doesn't instantly turn me off, I lose immersion in video games and movies easily after about an hour. The gym is nice, studying this transmission is nice, setting record laptimes in AC is nice. Getting a continuous day of work in without waiting for some ESL to answer an email all day is nice. My sanity probably wouldn't last long with a kid nagging me to buy chocolates 50 times in the iga checkout lane
>>28188189how the fuck did you know it was me
>>28188794autism lol. Your insults and shitposts follow a certain format. It's not a bad thing and I'm not hating either, just that I knew it was you.
>>28157393why doesn't my electronic quadrajet with electric choke fast idle on a cold start until you drive it a very short distance
>>28188837You are giving the throttle at least one full pump to the floor and release before cranking, right? This both puts a bit of fuel into the engine to start it with while also setting the choke to the closed position as the detents on the fast idle cam would prevent that with the throttle closed.Or perhaps the choke pull-off isn't working and it's way rich until some heat gets in the choke thermostat and opens the choke plate some.Alternatively the fast-idle cam sticks though I can't quite remember if the fast idle cam falls to fast idle or is lifted to fast idle on the 'Bog
>>28188516Got the day off the other day for the holiday, had a decently productive day. Worked out, meal prepped, shooting range, fixed a relatives truck, then dinner with family. Got to work the next day and boss asks me what I did then proceeds to say something like “is that supposed to impress me? It’s a day off! If you wanted to impress me you’d say you got drunk and barbecued all day!”Bear in mind our job literally demands we stay in shape and be good at shooting.
>>28188916Yeah I always pump the throttle a time or two before a cold start. It just started doing this last week, before then it was operating normally.
