here's those shiny new ground straps, still need the one by the gas filler neck but it turns out it's riveted in rather than bolted, so I'm just gonna get a cold chisel and hammer it off since I can't get a grinder in there.

the only problem I have left with this truck before it's ready to daily is a seized wheel cylinder on the passenger side. I have a new one along with new shoes and a spring kit, just need to get the drums surfaced and install everything.

that and also the truck won't restart immediately after I turn it off. if I let it sit for even a few minutes it'll fire up, but just after turning it off it'll crank super slowly, like several seconds between turning over. I'm guessing it's the starter getting hot, but I haven't had time to check all the connections yet so it could be that.

The last model of natrually aspirated Malibu was the 2016 Malibu Limited 2.5L

As for avoiding CVT in the Malibu, usually the highest end trim package of that year will have a genuine automatic transmission instead of CVT. But that also means you have to buy all the trim packages included as part of that final trim package with the automatic tranny.

What do you guys think of the Colorado ZR2?

I'm strongly considering getting one as my first pickup. Specifically a 2021. I own fully paid off toyota shitbox and a motorcycle. I want to so some light off roading like driving through floodwaters, the beach and doing small jumps in dirt roads. Also want to use the pickup to carry my bike if I need to or tow jet skis. (Florida fag)

I dont know shit about trucks and I assume that pickups should have big strong engines like a V6 or V8, which is why I'm not interested in the newer ZR2 since they have 4 cylinder
>>
>>28186466
The new GM 4 cylinder is turning out to be a great engine and has plenty of torque for light towing, the zr2 would be fine for this despite the reduced towing capacity.

I recommend reading up on the GM eight speeds. Some of the issues have fixes now, but they aren't exactly the smoothest things in the world. These transmissions and all the electronics (especially in the third gens) are the biggest problems.
While you're at it, look into the L3B in the third gens. They might be four bangers, but they make tons of torque low down and have been solid engines. 430ft-lb in the HO variant is pushing into V8 territory. They sound like crap, but the new Colorados are far from being underpowered and slow.
I haven't really seen any long-term issues cropping up that you won't see on anything else. Most of the stuff people report seem like crib deaths from badly built motors. There are Silverado guys that already have 100k+ on the motors without issues or simple shit like P0420 codes. I really want to see how long these motors last. GM beefed them up a bit more 2023 and slapped a 100k warranty on the Silverado's that have them.
>>
>>28186950
>These transmissions and all the electronics (especially in the third gens) are the biggest problems.

Exactly why I'm more interested in getting a 2nd Gen ZR2. I heard a ton of problems from 2023 and 2024. If I dont go for a ZR2, fhe other two pickups I was looking into was Toyota Tacoma or Ford Raptor. I would love a V8 raptor but I heard mixed things about the V6
>>
>>28187138
The second gen ZR2's have nearly the same transmission. They shift hard and are known for shuddering in 8th gear. Haven't really seen much aside from the third gens already coming with the newly specced ATF that fixes the shuddering problem. Not sure if dealers are still honoring the free fluid swap on all the 8-speed second gens.
The only big electronics issue I saw with the third gens is some update that drained the battery on a ton of trucks. Seems like things have been fine since then, so hopefully GM fixed their software deployment shit.
I don't know much about the Toyotas, they priced themselves out of what I am willing to pay. Their older trucks are solid. The V8 Tundra TRDs are cool too. But when I see $30k+ for a used midsize, I'd rather look elsewhere or buy new for not much more. Sure some of these trucks can go forever, but I don't know what the last owner did in the 70k miles they had it for.
Ford has some interesting stuff, but I refuse to buy any vehicle, let alone a pickup, with touchscreen everything. Their 10-speed just isn't appealing to me either.

Thankya. I opted to repaint the recessed areas black rather than dark gray, because that's what I had on hand at the moment. I think it's much more striking with the black and chrome.
One good thing about the 94-98 GMC grilles is they are much more common in junkyards than the 88-93, if you go that route.

I have a truck called the mystery machine, because it's a mystery why it's so slow and the prior owner knew nothing about the engine. It's an S10 blazer that weighs about 3300lbs. It has a junkyard 350 sbc with a mild cam, long tubes, new dual plane intake and 600cfm carb. I have base timing at 14* and all in at about 32*, New cap/rotor/wires/plugs. Despite that, still does the quarter in the mid 16s when it should be a mid 14s car. Thoughts on where to look next? Maybe a bad lifter?

Calling it a midsize is a stretch, 1st gen Colorado's were only marginally bigger than the s10, and they sucked because every single one of them that touched salt cracked the frame behind the can. Great looking trucks though

GMC Express? It has been running a very long time on the same or similar platform. GM does still not offer a high top van where Ford/Ram do.
They will all be similarly reliable based on maintenance history. I only recommend the newest one you can buy because they move from a 4 speed to 6 speed transmission.
>>
*Chevy Express/ GMC Savana
Same vehicle, same maker, same parts, but can only be serviced at one brand or something. Stupid GM.
>>
I’m a GM dealer trans and diesel tech and I will tell you that the Malibu and the 3 liter diesel are the worst things they make aside from corvettes. The Malibu’s that have cvts (some come with baby 9 speed) will not make it out of powertrain without either valve body and pressure sensors or a new trans. GM doesn’t have you rebuild them like other units. The 3 liter diesel will leak oil and anytime it has to be worked on the guy doing the job will hack your truck to pieces as this cowl under the wipers has to come off to access the back of the engine. Stick with a normal 5.3/6.2 in suv or pickup platform. The actual 6.6 duramax is incredibly reliable and has no problems really aside from emissions. My old duramax had 300k when I sold it and my new one has 53k. The duramax is the best thing GM makes.
>>

yeah idc about gmc or chevy, and I'll be getting a cutaway with a small 10ftish box, so the highroof isnt an issue. I just dont want a ford, I'm not into them and I often see more GM stuff for sale in my area.

so I'm really looking at different optioned GMT 600/610s. with that in mind, there are no standout engine options, either good or bad? that laundry list of different vortecs are all more or less equal for basic work use? Leaning towards gas, just for the sake of common parts. fuel economy is not a concern

my truck is almost identical to picrel with a 14ft box, sbc 350, 4L80, and some kind of heinous diff ratio giving a top speed of 55mph. kind of a stupid configuration, 8000lbs empty with a 10,000 gvwr.
>>
You should get a 6.6 gas express or Savana 3500. I think they started with those in 2020. The extended wheel base 2500s have a 6.0 vortec and a 6L90. The 6.6 gas 3500 vans have a slightly modified 6L90 and are very stout aside from check ball problems in valve body (easy fix) or snapped output carrier ring gear welds in which the vehicle loses all propulsion in all ranges. The 6.6 gas is very powerful and reliable. The 8L90 only comes in savanna or express 2500s. I think the box trucks you want are only in dually configurations.
>>
https://youtu.be/_ZOXegdbQJs?si=ICaPPE9uDJgsqex1 common issue on 6L90s. The torque converter can fail just like in 6L80 (1500 pickup and suv trans) but it usually does at higher miles unlike the 1500s. I would replace the nylon check balls with Torlon wines from a competent trans shop and you probably won’t have issues.
>>
>>28192885
that looks like a badass option but I'm not going to spend more than 5k max, my current rig was $3500 and I'm not expecting to find that again, but thats why im looking towards the 2000-2010 years more, due to price

I think youre right about duallys, I don't need or want one, but so far every cutaway ive seen has been on one

After struggling to get all these springs back on with some locking pliers I caved and ordered a drum brake tool, hopefully that'll make this more tolerable.
I have a new cylinder for the leaking one on the passenger side, but discovered today that the driver's side is leaking too. Gotta order another one now.

I took my drums to a brake shop and they told me they're too big for their brake lathe. How the fuck is that possible? the guy thought they were off a dually, I told him it's just a 2500. in any case now I have to find a shop that can turn my (apparently) specialty drums.

with the 3m kit you're basically refinishing the surface back to how it was from the factory.

I just had to have that LS7, but I rolled the lottery wrong and have to now redo the heads due to heavy titanium and brass in the oil.

I plan on just doing the full heads, came, exhuast, intake and tune to make it worth it (already have ARH headers, airaid intake, SS2 cam, and it came with a NPP exhaust, but I just am pissed at having to tear into the motor.
