I'm no Dr. Oldsmobile but I think the one in the OP is a 98, not an 88, and a couple years newer than the '71 in that video (the easy indicator is the headlights, on the early 70s models the divider between them bulges forward, while on late models it's flush with the outer edges of the surround). Don't quote me on that though.

Old has some really good powertrains, well-built, great paintwork for the era, but their cars never had the charm of a late 60s Mopar. They all have these weird grills and somewhat bland, uneventful side profiles.

>They all have these weird grills and somewhat bland, uneventful side profiles.
That was kind of Olds's thing, wasn't it? Weird grills were usually poking at Pontiac or Cadillac and going "Haha look I did the same thing but better" and the side profiles were pretty subdued, lacking obvious trim or just using a body line crease, as by that point they'd taken the "quiet luxury/power" role that used to be the "doctor's car" Buick's role once Buick got hopped up on gas fumes and started pumping out 400ci Skylarks. I admit the rocket isn't for everyone but if anything that just makes it better, that at the time you could still have such widely varied bodies among manufacturers (in contrast, I don't really care for the slab sided or fuselage Chryslers myself).
>>
This car looks like a bland SUV that was stomped by a giant.

Ugly, huge, heavy, excessively wide in an attempt to bring the form into a smoother sedan-like thing. What a repulsive piece of design. Even a model S looks better than this shit.

>>28196526
Yeah, that was an Olds thing.
And well, they kept it consistent up to the mid 80s.
I'm not saying it's bad - there was something fun about getting their top trim cars while still looking like any other cheaper one, but fast.

I think it's better to be ugly but memorable than just being absolutely forgettable. Picrel... Sad end to a legacy.

>>28196517
That car looks more bland than ugly to me. Get rid of the Olds split grille and it could be basically any early 80s compact. Not hideous, just boring.
>>
>>28196457
yeah this one is pretty fucking awful. from what i've read, virgil exner had designed this for the full size c-body but the execs heard rumours that chevy was gonna downsize their cars so they tried to beat them to it. virgil was pissed off and didn't want any of it so they sacked him and kept him on as a consultant. because of that this abomination was born and they lost a lot of sales
>>
>>28195725
Facelift has grown on me over the years. I honestly don't even think it looks that bad, really.
>>
>>28196385

>>
>>28196841
Ah, I guess I can see it and understand the sentimentality. Still think it looks a million times better on that original, though. I think that nice thick horizontal piece going under the vertical bars makes it mesh with the design much bettuer than the exterior metal/rubber beam bar on the other, and the split in the middle further muddles the design.
