The Dana 60 is better than the Ford 9 inch in almost every way for the average street car.

If it's that big of a deal go for the 9 inch for the 2 times a year you hit the strip.

Causing more parasitic loss and making you slower.

Sure if you cut it all yourself and have the fixturing to do it right.
The Dana is cheaper to have built and stock handles tons of power just fine.
Everytime I turn around it's 9 inch this or 9 inch that like save yourself some money and go with the superior axle.

9" has 3 pinion bearings.
There are also nodular iron cases to be found in the junkyard if you know what you're looking for.

If my 9" doesn't break with 1000hp, why would I want a significantly heavier dana 60?

Not much heavier especially accounting for bracing on the part of the 9 inch. If you are really worried about weight get the Dana built with thinner tubes but you are better off not slamming 30 racks for a few weeks if weight is 100% a problem for your car.
Also the increased power to turn the 9 inch is also a factor. Sure junk yard finds are great but that's all luck at that point.
I'm also not talking about the full floaters.
If you don't need a brace at lower hp go for the 8.75 and enjoy the efficiency gainz

Why would I run an 8.75 when the 8.8 exists?
Same pinion diameter but the 8.8 can be found in 50 billion vehicles of various widths and even comes in IRS.

You have proven zero benefits of a dana 60 over a 9" or an 8.75 over 8.8

As far as availabilty, Chrysler 8 3/4 / Dana 60s are rare as fuck and 3x the cost to build than a 9" Ford. I can order any spec 9" for pumpkin and housing I want off of Summit or Jegs, and they make a 9" upgrade for damn near every car, new or rebuilt, for the cost of a core Chrysler 8 3/4 or Dana 60.

The only reason to use a Dana 60 or 8 3/4 is to keep it numbers matching or because you already have it.

60s are cheaper to have built. Now doing it all yourself it's a toss up as you can get both for damn near free. 8.75s are great if your car isn't going to be making a ton of power but will still break the stock axles as you can find them pretty cheap if it isn't an LSD unit but that's what the welder is for.

They are. Finding a semi-floater 60 is not that easy and it's gonna be out of a van or a "light-duty" 3/4 ton truck, which means you're shortening the housing and axles by a LOT.

ford 9 has multiple pinion bearings and can be set up in a bench ready to drop in. its a reason offroad guys run ford9 centers and dana60 others. if you cant afford it all a pure 60 is the second best for most applications, drag, street or offroad.

Thank you a sand user this is exactly what I've been trying to say. The Dana 60 I just cheaper for the little guy who doesn't have the world for a shop to cut and weld up axles.
Not every build is going to be 1000hp but still needs to go aftermarket. Dana 60 is the king for this application since gear changes are pretty much muted if you rarely go to the track or never even go.
Idk why people are so allergic to getting up a different carrier too with its shim packs to swap it out fast too if you ever do have to swap back and forth.
Not everything has to be the absolute best that costs a billion goy bucks

So 71-75 Chrylser New Yorkers and a few other full size C Body cars came with Dana 60s and if it's a Chrysler, it has an LSD and 3.00+ gears.

It also has the same perch length as a 78-93 Dodge pick-up...

No kidding? I thought the 8 3/4 was used even in the heavy cruiser applications. I know the 1/2 ton trucks (mid '60s anyway) had'em.
