It gets injected into the selective catalyst reactor in new diesel vehicles (since 2006 in Mercedes, later in other brands) to help the catalyst remove nitrous oxide emissions (NOx) from exhaust. It’s why diesel cost of ownership is no longer lower than gasoline vehicle cost of ownership. Every emissions related component can be as arbitrarily expensive as they want because you can’t legally use the vehicle without them.
