Can you daily theese vehicles with modern fuel injection , and modern safety precautions such as converting the drum brakes to discs.
>>
They were perfect for an era when easy maintenance and repair by owners around the world was critical to success. That makes them easy to daily if you can turn a wrench. They do not need EFI as their carbs are so simple (If the generator light illuminates pull over immediately as the drive belt likely came off which besides not charging ceases turning the fan which cools the engine.

That said they suck by modern standards and are slow deathtraps so vulnerable to crosswinds some bridges put up warning signs.

They are easy to daily if you still go for it. Get the best sheet metal condition you can (check VW sites to see where to inspect for rust) because everything mechanical is cheap but bodywork is expensive unless you do it.

You can daily them with the carbs & points if you're not a faggot
>>
Weren't the latter models already with disk brakes in the front?
They're manageable if you're not a wrenchlet.
Despite there not being much to go wrong with them, it's still possible for things to break. The electronics are a bit touchy in these old things.

You'll be holding up traffic and pissing everyone off.

No reason to put fuel injection on it, it won't be any faster. You're zero to sixty will still be yes.

Why do disc brakes even enter this equation at all, they don't stop the car any faster than drums. Drum brakes are perfectly adequate for something that isn't seeing hard braking lap after lap, their only practical downside is that shoes are more fiddly to change than pads.

The 1938 to 2003 VW type 1 (beetle) is as simple as it gets. The carburetor fits in the palm of your hand. The engine weighs just 242-277 lbs (without transmission). The body on frame means you can pop the top off, swap in a new floor pan and bolt it back on. Prior to 1971 you had a torsion front steering system of simple flat bars of steel.

It really was a car for the people easy to fix. The only catch is learning to drive stick, dealing with no AC or power steering and managing 45-54 HP. It's not fast.

You can swap in a bigger engine pretty easy. I knew someone who's dad had a 3800 v6 in his bug. The dad died in the bug not long after putting the v6 in it.

If you want to reliably own one you either need to know how (or be wiling to learn) to wrench or have deep pockets in the modern era.
I've owned a couple air cooled VWs and they require as much attention as any other car. A Super Beetle with a Highway Flyer is a great car for 65mph highways, but when everyone else is in a 3-ton SUV these things just feel like a soda can coffin.

Apparently the bug drums aren't self adjusting, so they can be a major pain in the ass especially when you're trying to seat new pads, they'll require constant adjusting as they set in. I could see the appeal in doing a disc conversion in order to get a more normal stud pattern for more wheel options.

it is also trivial and cheap to dramatically increase the power you get out of the stock engine. 100-120hp isn't fast but it is plenty in a super light vehicle.
>>

My uncle had one that was fully restored and brought up to semi modern standards. It was still always having issues and was generally pretty shitty and unenjoyable to drive, especially on the highway. It seems like dailying one would get old really quickly.

Recon i saw a man resto modding these and outfitting them with some sort of fuel injected boxer engine and a 12 volt ac compressor.

Almost certainly an EJ. There are almost certainly more subaru powered vw beetles and busses on the road today than air cooled drive trains

Yeah no wonder. They're cool cars but they're about as rigid as a wet noodle.

nooooo, you can't just drive something that is fun and you like!!! it's not saaayyuuuufff!!! you will die unless you have 36 airbags, blind spot assist, pedestrian protection, ABS, ESC, EPC, EFI, ETC, ELC, and ELGBTQ++!!!

>Why do disc brakes even enter this equation at all, they don't stop the car any faster than drums
50 year old boomer here who actually drove 4 wheel drum brake vehicles when they were newer. The big advantage of disc brakes is heat dissipation. A drum brake car will work great, but you get 2-3 good stops until they fade completely from heat. 99% of the time this is sufficient, but if you get a bit carried away in mountain driving or towing, you can very quickly find yourself barreling down the road at speed with absolutely zero brakes and zero warning.
Drum brakes are also worse than discs when wet.

You can daily the later models easily, a friend of mine does it, be warned though >>28200571 absolutely applies, you are toast if you're in any serious crash

>ABS
ABS is honestly a good feature to have. Needing to pump brake when panicking isn't that easy to do well.
