I’m selling my truck soon, and buying a Mustang.
Never had a sports car, but always wanted one since I was a child.
Finally doing it, anons.
On the used market, what should I look for?
Any years I should avoid?
What are some red flags to look for?
>>
An s550 or s650 will handle much more like a sports car than earlier models.

Consider the ecoboost - they have plenty of power and torque for a first sports car, and 100lbs right on the front axle is not a small difference. You can find good deals on manuals: every mustang bro wants a v8 and the rental spec crowd want an automatic.
>>
>>28205840
Don't listen to this fag. If you don't get the V8 theres literally no reason to buy a mustang.
>>
>>28205841
Every mustang bro wants a v8
>>
>>28205661
But anon how will you do truck stuff with your sports car?
>>
>>28205661
96-98 GTs are dogs.
>>

>>28205841
Both of these anons are right in their own special way. I think unless you have an affinity for a specific body style, the below are your best options.

>If you want the "sports car" experience, don't get anything pre-S550. They are the total package out of the box when it comes to performance at price range and will not leave you wanting more for a long time.

>If you want the modern "muscle car" experience, get a V8 S197. They truly emulate the muscle car experience of old while also providing modern comforts/conveniences with significant performance bumps over previous generations. Still good performance for price and can be modified to perform more like a sports car, but that will take time, money and planning, and will never really reach the sophistication of a stock S550+.
>>
MY15-17 is the best in my opinion as a former Stanger. The interior alone is leaps and bounds ahead of the older ones for not a lot more money, and it looks better than the facelift ones. The performance package is nice because you get brembos and line lock.
>>
>>28206047
I would say don't get the S197, period. The clutch is way too heavy, the S550 gen is perfectly livable day to day. The way they are priced in my area, retards price a 5-6k difference between S197 and S550. The S550 is a hilariously better handling car. The S197 definitely mogs in looks. t. owned both
>>
>>28206014
Fun fact: the mustang has a tow rating. Get a trailer!
>>
>>28205661
I would only buy a new one to gut and swap in the drivetrain of my 9th gen whenever the frame eventually rusts itself away.

What’s the difference between “sports car” feel and “muscle car” feel?

>>28205661
Mustangs are great entry level sports/enthusiast/performance cars, but there's so much variety within them, that you need to analyze a few things before you pick which one to buy.

Ask yourself these questions:
- Do you want manual or automatic?
- Do you care about the exhaust sound? V8s, V6s, and the ecoboost i4s sound VERY different
- Do you want a convertible?
- Are you mainly going to drive spiritedly on straight roads, or curvy roads?
- Do you like accelerating from a stop, or randomly while you're already rolling?
- Do you want to cruise calmly and in comfort, or do you want a spirited, edgy experience?
- Do you plan to modify it?
- Do you mainly drive 30-50mph (city roads) or 50-80+? (highway stretches)
- Care about fuel economy?
- Care about street cred from other car enthusiasts?
- Budget?

All these factors affect which car you will want to buy.

IMO, if you're literally new to cars, you should buy something you can easily resell for minimal loss a year or two later. Don't buy a pristine, low mileage car that you'll end up wrecking or losing a lot on depreciation, but don't buy a nasty neglected beater either.

The biggest things are v8 or non-v8, manual or auto, and budget. Think to yourself about those things first, then start to look around for the one you seem to gravitate towards.

All v8 mustangs are good, but the 4.6L from pre 2010 are SLOW by today's standards. They just sound good and are at least better than the old v6s. If you can afford it, get a 5L v8 from 2010+.

All manuals are going to cost more than autos, but in my opinion, provided you DON'T sit in stop-and-go traffic often, or have leg issues, manuals make the car more fun to drive, even slow cars.

And of course budget. You can get a nice older mustang for way less money than a nice newer mustang with the updated body style or better engine. 2015+ mustangs handle better because of IRS. Go test drive different cars, and see how each makes you feel.
>>
Anon above is right, if I was buying one and looking for the best value/bang for the buck and livability it would be a 15-17 GT.
Almost regardless of the truck you’re coming from, it will feel like an upgrade.
>>
>>28205661
consider getting a manual
it will make the drive more engaging and etc

Noted. I plan on doing that.
>Do you want manual or automatic?
Manual all the way.
>Do you care about the exhaust sound? V8s, V6s, and the ecoboost i4s sound VERY different
Not particularly, but it’s a nice bonus.
>Do you want a convertible?
Not unless it’s a Miata
>Are you mainly going to drive spiritedly on straight roads, or curvy roads?
Highways, and some back roads
>Do you like accelerating from a stop, or randomly while you're already rolling?
Sometimes, yes
>Do you want to cruise calmly and in comfort, or do you want a spirited, edgy experience?
Both sound nice
>Do you plan to modify it?
In my head I’d like to think so, but if I buy a daily I don’t see myself doing anything other than maybe coilovers, and a few cosmetics. Idk
>Do you mainly drive 30-50mph (city roads) or 50-80+? (highway stretches)
Mainly 60-65mph. There are times I drive slower in the city and times I drive interstate as well.
>Care about fuel economy?
Yes, but as long as it s roughly the same as my truck, I don’t really care. I’ve always gotten around 18-20mpg on average.
>Care about street cred from other car enthusiasts?
lol At the end of the day I don’t care what someone wants to think of me.
Compliments are always nice, but at the end of the day if I can give Jesus the glory, I want Him to have it. I deserve nothing. I am nothing special or nobody special.
>Budget?
30k, but if we can keep it a little under that, it’d be nice.

I dont think you can go wrong with a mustang. consider not asking on this shithole of a site and look on YouTube or plebbit mustang specific communities for advice
also keep the Camaro in mind since you want a manual and I heard the tremec is better than the getrag

Well, since my truck is a 2017, I was thinking about going with at least a 2017.
I’m not a huge fan of that body style; I really like the style of the 2011 or 2012, but since I need a daily I figured I’d probably be back tracking going with an older one like that.

If you get anything but a v8 in your mustang you're either a faggot or a woman.
As someone that had a mazdaspeed miata, z06, and now an sti, getting anything but the highest trim of a car is pretty gay.
>>
>>28207386
Ok, so your boyfriend won't let you be the man on Wednesdays if you don't buy the highest trim level available. Got it. Hate to break it to you anon, but the top trim of Mustang is not called "V8" and it ain't a base GT either.
>>
>>28207067
Consider mileage over model year if it will save you some money - there are a lot of low-mileage Mustangs out there.

I never learned to drive an automatic either, but give one a fair shake.

If you don't know what the difference between "muscle car" and "sports car" handling is, you want "sports car" like every sane person but drag racing boomers since Mercedes put an independent suspension on the 500K in 1934. Get an S550.

It almost goes without saying on a late-model car, but look for one that has the level of stereo ("media system") that you want, because it's major surgery to upgrade them in these cars.

Packages/Options/Trim levels that are interesting and in your price range:

- base Ecoboost: inexpensive, plenty fast, better balanced than GT models, great first sports car

- 2020-2023 Ecoboost High Performance Package with Handling Package. You probably won't find one, but it's worth mentioning. If you do find one, test drive it. One reviewer called it "the GT350 of 4-cylinder Mustangs" which I would not try to argue myself. It's more comparable to the GT Performance Pack Level 2. More interesting and more trackable than a base GT

- GT w/Performance Pack Level 2 (2018 onward). You can probably find one under $30K if you look hard. This has all the factory upgrades you would want to track your Mustang but is still daily driveable.

- Stretch option: Mustang Bullit (2019-2020) You *might* find a clapped one under $30K. You can find one under $35K. Nice cosmetic trim package on a GT PP2 with some GT350-derived upgrades

Considered separately:

The Magneride active/adjustable suspension is really nice for a daily driver.

The active exhaust is also really cool.

I wanted a Torsen differential for handling; maybe you don't care
>>
>>28207860
Cross shop with Chevrolet in your price range:
Camaro w/1LE handling package. This is not a trim level. The 1LE package is similar to the PP2. The SS w/1LE is not too uncommon. You will probably not find a Turbo 4 w/1LE; they are even less common than the Ecoboost HPP.

Speaking of Mustangs; in what cases, would you want an ecoboost over a gt?
Are exo’s even fun?
>>
>>28206141
Sports cars feel built for if not racing, but spirited driving - taking corners, braking etc. They're peppier, sharper than regular road cars but are also less comfortable to drive everyday for a long time because of that.

Muscle cars were (originally) regular, even cheap cars but with large engines, so they would be built for regular driving, not corner or brake particualrly well but have a fuckhuge powerful engine that would enable fast acceleration.
It's why people love late 60s muscle cars so much - they're raw and unwieldly, like a 1960s shitbox with 300+hp would be.

A lot of the muscle car bro thing is just boomer cope because domestic entry-level performance cars had such uncompetitive handling for so long.
>>
>>28209100
The Focus RS is more fun than a base GT after the first three times you've opened up that V8 on an empty stretch of highway. Have driven both. You'd need a very heavily optioned Mustang for an equivalent driving experience, but if you can't afford an RS, I guess a Mustang is an ok option for poors.
>>
>>28209279
>I guess a Mustang is an ok option for poors
I mean a Focus rs price for price is still cheaper than a Mustang GT of the same year and similar mileage, but ok.

I’m not going to lie, the idea of taking an ecoboost and slapping a giant turbo on it really is an appealing idea.
Talk me out of it, anons.
>>
>>28210737
if you’re gonna throw boost at it be prepared to do a head gasket or two but it’s not the worst idea
>>
>>28209063
Ecos can be better at autocross if your suspension is set up because it’s lighter up front. You can slap a big turbo on the eco with the 10r80 and not blow it up. Pretty much any power past stock on the GT will blow that glass tranny up.
>>
>>28210737
Sounds like ass in comparison, won't ever make as much power as just modding a GT.
>>
>>28210737
Or you could just take an ecoboost and drive the crap out of it instead of dreaming of building a supercar out of a Mustang
>>
>>28205661
I'm buying one next year, UK based.

It's a bit of an emotional purchase for me. My dad is 78 and is really struggling after breaking his hip last year, like a lot of British boomers he's always loved Americana and especially American cars, when he was a sales rep he always had a Ford and would drive hundreds of miles in the day with Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash cassettes.
It'll mean a lot to me to be able to turn up at my parents' house in a Mustang GT and take my dad for a drive in it.
>>
>>28211304
Go for it. I see two regularly in my village together, I think its a his and hers combo. They're obnoxiously loud but I'm sure you know that already.

>>

>>
>>28210463
I forget the name of the company they're from but the boomer guy I bought the mustang from put those on lol. he also had a black magnetic strip he put on the back between the taillights to imitate the look people would give their old mustangs. his first car was a blue first gen mustang so when he saw this he had to have it.
>>
>>28211280
But at that point why don’t I just buy a GT?
>>
>>28205841
Sister bought the v6. Its actually pretty cool. V8 and overkill and will hurt your pocket.
>>
>>28212797
Because you didn't say "GT Performance Package Level 2", basically. Before that, the Ecoboost is plenty of sports car and in some ways more interesting - it's a little better balanced front to back and the base suspension is a little better matched to the engine. If you're not coming up from a lower-powered sports car like a Miata or BRZ that you've already driven the crap out of, it will have all the power you need to be on one of those funny Mustang videos. Also it will be easier to find without somebody else's shitty mods.

>>28209889
>a Focus rs price for price is still cheaper than a Mustang GT of the same year and similar mileage

Not in the US, where a low mileage RS is holding a lot of value. And the Ecoboost has a similar engine to the RS for even less money.

do mustangs make good convertibles?
