I got a buddy near Billing Montana that has $40k to buy a new truck after an insurance pay out.
He's looking for a 4x4, like a Tundra or similar. Preferably something that can seat 4, but a 6' bed is more important.
Maybe subaru.
he wants a modern, vehicle. i tried talking him out of it, and regardless there aint shit in the area and since this is an insurance pay out, its easier to go through the dealer.
there are 4 dealers in town, one is a Hertz used cars that has the best options, and highest reviews.
anyone have experience? Hertz suck as a rental place, but that sales lot has lots of good reviews for some reason

are these cars safe to buy after being beat on as rental?
there isnt much choice, and he needs to buy a car by Friday

There are over of trucks on there, some don’t have pictures for some reason but the newer rams with 50k miles and the 150s are too bad at 42k

i dont think he wants domestic

Rental vehicles are not as beat on as people think they are. Yeah some people beat the shit out of them but the majority of people treat them like their own vehicle. It's still a terrible idea to buy one though. Since they replace them every 2-4 years they don't really bother maintaining them. I've also heard some manufacturer warranties are voided if the vehicle was ever used as a rental.

All I would tell him is to buy whatever is still naturally aspirated and doesn't have direct injection, so probably a Ram 1500. Have friends who got very good deals on certified pre-owned examples of those pickups for nearly half that, even before the prices started to come down around mid 2024.

I wouldn't consider any of the TT V6's, I'm an Albertan, very similar climate, and those direct injected engines like to have issues in the cold, the oil they use is typically very thick. They haven't gotten terrible yet but in the dead of winter with a daily, I wouldn't push it if I didn't have to. Best of luck!

He's considering a GMC canyon.
Thoughts?

They don't come with a 6ft bed if you get the 4x4 though

How about engine? Any retarded shit like a Belt oil pump? Any port injectors?

I looked at one when I was looking at midsize trucks a bit ago, from what I remember they are only turbo i4s and yes they use belts instead of chains. Not sure about the latter though, I thought they were all gdi but i could be wrong.

My Ranger is ex-Avis. It was in nicer shape and way cheaper than similar age one-owner trucks when I got it, and almost 2.5 years and 20k mi later it's been flawless, only thing that's gone wrong is the shocks and that happens on all FX4s by 50k or so. I can't say the same will be true of every ex-rental truck but what I read when doing research is that rental companies, at least the big reputable ones, maintain the fuck out of their vehicles because they don't want to deal with customers getting stranded and suing them or whatever. I don't think anybody really rents a midsize truck to beat on it either, they'll get a long bed half ton or HD from U-Haul or HD/Lowes if they need a truck for serious stuff, while these crew cab midsizes are mostly families going on a ski trip or towing a rental camper or whatever.
