>hardwiring lets your dashcam record when the car isn't running
>it has a voltage cutoff setting so it doesn't drain the battery
how long does it last generally if you use this cutoff setting at say 12v?

And how the fuck do I use a multimeter? I'm retarded, obviously.

Depends on how large your battery is.
Those use such low amps, it won't matter assuming you drive the car on the regular
>>
>>28210516
what if I go on vacation for a month and leave the dashcam on? how long until the voltage drops below 12v?

I just checked my car and it says "46B24L"
>>
>>28210578
just unplug the camera then.
also any battery drops below 12.5V, is a bad battery.

Use a key-on power source instead.

>And how the fuck do I use a multimeter?
Read the instructions.

How are you going to record one month of data? If it loop records, what's the point?

Some cameras reduce the frame rate or only record if movement is detected.

Also, the new Viofo A329 supports an external hard drive/SSD
>>
>>28210410
Most decent cams will run at like 1 frame per second until it detects motion, then it'll turn on properly.

ive had a hardwired dashcam in my car since new and it's been 3 years now and no issues with starting the car.

it's a vantrue n2s if you care

>>28210578
the longest i've been gone is ~2 weeks with no issues, the battery protection is set to 11.8V at its lowest but i dont remember what i set it to (it has 2 settings)

>>28210907
this camera can either activate on movement or like others said just slow down framerate when parked. at full resolution for both cameras, i can easily record 4 weeks of footage before it starts looping, with framerate reduced i can record much more (depends on how often i drive).

the biggest "issue" for me is that whenever there's a clip that was categorized as an "event," the video is saved on a separate folder and it does not get auto-deleted. i drive pretty spiritedly so i'll have a couple dozen clips in that folder whenever i go back to check the sd card.

all dashcams loop. They usually only save clips when an incident is detected or you do it manually.

Do niggers steal these? Not to use them as intended but the short videos might be good for their worldstar and tiktok.

Most people recommend using a low bitrate mode instead of a lower frame rate mode when parked because the low bitrate mode still records audio unlike the low frame rate modes, and since the image is fairly static while parked the low bitrate can usually still pick up license plates no problem.
But either way you should be running at least one of these modes instead of just relying on motion or impact detection while parked. Impact detection can leave you without proper context to the incident, potentially missing any footage of license plates or faces that you could have otherwise recorded. And motion detection is useless in the main setting in which you want a parking mode which is public parking lots where there is a lot of activity, since there is motion happening all the time. May as well just leave it recording at full quality. The only place where motion detection makes sense is in your garage in which case you should just set up a security cam.

Most dashcams with a parking mode will have a feature that lets you tell it to stop recording after x hours in parking mode. I have mine set to 8 hours cause this really the longest I'm ever parked away from home, and has no risk of draining my battery even with dual cam recording. It also means I'm only recording my garage wall for 8 hours instead of 14 every night which means if I ever need to go through the footage for whatever reason it is that much less of a headache. And of course this is especially true for weekends where I might not drive for 48+ hours sometimes. No need to remember to unplug or change settings.

Is audio important? I don't want to be denied a claim because the insurance people heard me say nigger.

When it comes to parking mode audio is important as it might be the only real evidence that you car was swiped on the side in a parking lot. Without audio your car might appear to shake a bit but who knows if that will be enough for an insurance claim. You may also capture voices or engine noises from another vehicle in the time before the impact that help prove that it was not you that caused the damage.
Some dashcams have a buffered parking mode, meaning they will record for anywhere from 5 to 30 seconds before the G sensor is triggered. I don't know how buffered parking mode compares to low bitrate or 5fps parking mode in terms of battery drain cause my dashcam doesn't offer it. Instead I just have low bitrate mode on as well as the impact detection, and if an impact ever is detected I can just scroll through and find the low bitrate footage including audio leading up to the impact.

You can do the math if you can find a general amp hour rating on your battery and see how many amps or watts your camera uses.

They sell little solar panel trickle chargers that you can lay on your dash and plug into the 12V lighter outlet (picrel). If you park your car in the sun and it’s a low draw camera, maybe the panel could keep up with it.

I hadn't thought about this, this is genious.
