Auction was a bust today.
Only one bike and it was a smashed harley.
Final bid was $2,900 and was still under the reserve.
Always interesting to see who's bidding, Armenia had a atleast 3 anons bidding for it.
Also saw a Chrysler 300 in a bid war between a couple United Arab Emirate bidders and Jordan.

I was actually thinking about a vrod.
I do not want an air cooled engine but crashed vrods are unheard of apparently.

We had a guy with a turbo vrod in the hop for dyno time.
He was going to attempt a speed record for a V-twin at Bonneville.
Don't know if he ever made th attempt or what his run was if he did.

I was saving up for a gsxs750 at first until an anon I met at palomar put me onto the FZ6
I wasn't super into it until I saw it had a centerstand and undertail exhaust and I was sold
Grown to love it over time, feel like it's this sort of culmination of all my favorite bits and pieces from the early 2000's sportbike era with the high redline, undertail exhaust, and soft alien like fairings.

Really hope I can make a habit of coming to palomar more regularly at some point because it would be a dream to fly through these roads with some real confidence

Chicago originally, but that trip started in Fort Collins Colorado. We trucked the bikes out there to start the trip at the fun part and rode to Boise for a chopper show. 10 of the best days on the road I've ever had. Don't skip Bonneville. Being there made the whole trip for me, everything else was a bonus. Including summiting the Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park at 12,183 feet above sea level on a foot clutch chopper crawling at 15 miles an hour uphill

What are your thoughts on buying nonrunning bikes? There's a cool bike for cheap I'm talking to someone about. I want to buy since right now I'm a nobiek, a Triumph 950 from 2004. Looks like it's in great condition from the photos but they say it doesn't run (with no details of why or how). I don't mind buying a new battery or some simple things like that, but I feel apprehensive about buying a lemon, you know? It's only 2k, which I can easily afford. Seems like I wouldn't even be able to get it started when I go to check it out so no test ride.

Thoughts?

>>28211002

>>

I'd leave it if I were you. Unless you know what's wrong and how to fix it, it's just 2k currency units down the drain that you could be spending on something that runs.
>>28211077
Ah okay. Is that, umm, safe? I thought it would be something like that, just never looked at one before.

I have bought most of my motorcycles/collection non-running. All were odd/weird bikes, most were sub 10k miles.
Get a runner first, it can be old if you want and that will get your mechanic skills up as it wears in. Then get a rare project you always thought was neat. Like a v-max 1200, kz1300, sportster/hd(potato,potato), sport bike, etc.

Hell yeah, that Lapland part is a lot of the same route we took. If you're into camping I got a local pro tip: check laavu.org for lean-to's and huts you can sleep in for free. They're kitted with basic firewood and make for excellent rest stops overnight, many of them are at absolute kino places.
Just remember to check if there's a forest fire warning.
>>
>>28210919
That's a clean looking bike, well out of my budget.

We had a customer complain that a vrod was "cutting out" (one of our rental bikes) so boss had me take it out on the freeway and open it up.
I cruised for about an hour and the only thing I could figure is that he was bouncing off the rev limiter- engine is so smooth it just pulls all the way to redline- typical HD riders don't understand it.

I always liked vrods, too bad they weren't more popular.

The lean-ins and huts are usually at the edges of small villages and the locals are very nice, really not an issue to sleep in solo, except on the eastern border you gotta piss around to scare away the wolves and bears. >>28211342
Well, check the tire age(on sidewall), see if it turns over, hit the front/rear brake to see if you get anything.
Check the clutch too, and gearbox. If it has a dipstick check it.

Beyond most of that you will have to make the decision. Remember, it will cost more then whatever you pay. Most running motorcycles when bought used you still have registration, insurance, and some other thing it will need.

bros its a piece of plastic gingerly gripping the throttle barely hard enough to counteract the spring pulling the throttle closed. It is the easiest thing to "turn off" by just twisting the throttle closed and its fully exposed so any malfunctions can be easily dealt with.
I much prefer this to something like the atlas throttle lock which looks cool, but has all the inner workings packed inside. Id worry about it getting jammed on. I never worry about that with mine.

>A fraction of a second is the difference between a near miss and crashing
>Excuse me sir, allow me to twist the throttle the other way before grabbing the brake lever or grab the clutch and lose all control on the gas while sending the valves into orbit
It's a dumb fucking thing and a hazard for you and everyone else on the road. You're free to do whatever you want, but don't try to tell yourself or others it's a good idea
>B...but manufacturers
They also designed and made the prototype for a nuclear powered car. That doesn't mean it's a good idea, it means there are retards like you behind a desk

How is a throttle by wire CC any better in your emergency situation?
>bbbbbbbb but it turns off when you press the brake!
I turn mine off by closing the throttle, you turn yours off by pressing the brake. Same difference. I always have my hands on the throttle besides when i show off for the cam like >>28211077

if you are in a life or death emergency situation on a motorcycle with either of the cruise control methods engaged, you at an equal level of danger
just because the manufacturer wired the cancel switch to the brakes doesnt suddenly make cruise control safe

also i post dangerous whols all day but CC is what you start clutching your pearls over?

Why is this so common amongst a certain type of rider?
>Going down a long road
>Notice biker in front is cruising at say 70
>Meanwhile I've been going at 80 for miles
>Pass him
>After said pass he suddenly decides he's gonna start do 85 just to pass you again
What causes some people to feel insecure when someone is going a bit faster?
>>
My friend that rides tried to teach me how to ride a few years back and his bike was a 1200cc Harley. He explained what to do but was a terrible teacher and didn't properly explain that you must let the clutch out SLOWLY when starting, he just said "let out the clutch when you start moving". It scared the shit out of me how much power it had and I dropped the bike twice. It gave me actual PTSD thinking I was gonna fly right into a wall and die
I decided to try again and watched some videos and they all say to let the clutch out slowly until you're moving, sometimes 30 feet or more. Makes more sense now
Thanks to my friend for being a terrible teacher and making me scared of trying a motorcycle for the past 5 years

2 newbie questions:
1. Is pinlock worth it over just sucking it up and applying Cat Crap every week?
2. Is an aftermarket center stand worth instaling for having to swap out a tube in case of a flat?
>>
My friend told me all bikes with the CP2 engine are great. Is it true? How do they do it?
He told me It has more torque "sooner" than supersports therefore it's more fun and quicker unless you wanna go 230+

Same way you would for any petrol motor. But you'll likely need to bring a battery to start with.

>does it have spark when you turn it over?
>does it even turn over?
It could be a number of things. As the other anon stated, check the age of the tyres as well. That's usually an indication of how long it's been sitting there not running. But I can only recommend not getting it at that price and unknown condition.

Guy building the off road harley here.

Got it locked in for new shock and fork extension for an extra bit of lift, plus going from a 19/15 to 21/17 rim plus Michelin Anakee in 90/150.

Hopefully that will get me out of trouble for the near future, and in case anyone was interested in doing something similar.

I’ve got a dirtbike front fender to fit up this weekend and a big steel plate I’ll be welding to the underside but otherwise everything just fits with standard setup.

>What do you need it to do that other bikes don't do better?
NTA, but off trail. It's a farm bike, not a dirt bike. You put-put across fields or scrubland, down across dried out gulleys where tat fat ass rear tire shines.

But unless you own land or live near BLM lands, there's much point anymore, becuse you're probbly just going to get shot for hopping a gate on land Bill Gates bought off some 80 year old rancher.

1/8" pop rivets would be plenty strong enough and semi-permanent

Yes the FZ750 had the genesis 5 valve.
Both sounded amazing but the one with a yoshimura can was pure sex.
It's a benchmark every other bike is compared to.

It's winter so fewer listings usually, check cycletrader, craigslist, FB marketplace. I'm seeing some good deals come back, prices are getting back to normal. Sometimes you have to look at a nearby larger city if your town is too small. Be patient, find a good one, look for hints the prior owner had good character.

Has anyone figured out a good pir of winter riding gloves that hold up to wind? As in, you use them and it they held up to sub-32 temps at highway speeds? One size up + liner didn't cut it. I hd to stop and warm th outide of my hands on the engine.

I got pullback risers. I want more pullback and swapping trees is the best option albeit most expensive. There are other weird adapter solutions out there but I don't like em cause nothing beats a direct connection from riser to triple tree.

Its called an R7 because.......

>It has 7hp
>Its top speed is 77kph
>It takes 7 mins to hit that speed
>It costs $77 to Insure
>It cost 7 dollars to road tax
>It takes 7 mins of kick starting to get it going
>New buyers give it 7 seconds before looking at another bike
>Dealers give it 7 days before sending it back
>It takes 7 weeks before its scrapped and recycled
>Yamaha only lost 7 million on its failure
>No one will ever remember it again after 7 months

I got a question
I have been watching redditnine, and at his klr650 test he goes 150kph on a shitty dirt road? what? is that real? can you really go that fast on unpaved roads with a bike?

Are exhaust worth it, seems mostly to be a sound and removing cat thing on most aftermarket ones.
>>28213381
Yeah, speed on motorcycles are a lot better now also it is important to note adv have a much higher top speed than dual sport and dirt bikes which are usually limited by thumpers or the gearing.

>Are exhaust worth it
Almost universally no, and definitely not for performance. It's worth replacing exhausts on old, clapped out, high mileage bikes because they can get crudded up over time. Sound is a meme and most aftermarkets do NOT sound better than stock (louder isn't better), and they'll usually make the bike run worse too without an ECU flash or tune.

I'm replacing the exhaust on my CB1100 because of pure buypig autism. There's no real justification. I'm replacing the gorgeous, beautifully engineered and crafted chrome OEM 4-2 with an imported full titanium 4-1. It's like 25lbs lighter, but mainly I'm obsessed with the look.
>>28213461
This is pretty much what I've always done, but I'm a total simp for this bike.

There are a whole bunch of parts that I didn't realize I needed to do the conversion. Lots of little things different between the wire and alloy wheel CB. Most of the parts I needed were OEM but factory rotors are like $600 EACH, so I ordered aftermarket ones for $200 each from Webike that look nicer anyway but they're made to order and will take like three months.

Apparently my partzilla order finally shipped today, so at least I should be able to get the exhaust on this week. And these shocks which I shouldn't have bought but got here in three days flat.
