Last time I paid a shop to do anything it was a transmission rebuild almost a decade ago that cost me $1400. Just like the title says, what was the last thing you've had done to your car and how much did it cost

Well I have tire shops do mount balance and alignment. It ranges from free because it came with the tires, to around 100 bucks.

They replaced a tire also as I had a non repairable puncture, also about 100 bucks.

Outside of that the last thing I had done was a small local shop who specialize in vintage Mercs fix a brake issue I couldn't figure out. It ended up being the master cylinder but I had already thrown a lot of parts at the issue trying to fix it, including trying to do a rebuild kit on the master cylinder, which fixed it for a while but ended up failing again. I also had them do the rear SLS spheres, steering stabilizer, and iirc a couple other small things. It ended up being like 3-4K this was pre-COVID but just barely, on a 1994 E320 wagon.

I took my other Merc there after an engine replacement. It was running but during the replacement I had damaged a solenoid on the transmission. I can't remember why I took it out but it must have been for a decent reason. It might have gotten smashed as the engine/trans combo went back in. Well I didn't put it back in correctly. I guess the car has to be in a certain shift position and I accidentally forced it in too far with what I thought was an acceptable level of force and it seemed to seat properly. Well when I fired up the car it wouldn't shift out of 2nd gear and I had no reverse. Limped it across town to their shop and had them address the issue, which required a partial rebuild of the transmission. That ended up being about 5 grand and this was roughly 2015 2016 or so?

That shop is well reviewed and I've always had good experiences there, I haven't had to bring anything back for the same issue. I like to do a lot myself but inside of Mercedes automatics is something I'll leave to the pros. I'm glad they're there for the shit that stumps me. Sometimes it's worth paying a few grand to just have the car back on the road working instead of fucking around for months.

Got A/C hoses made to adapt my 40y/o AC system to the compressor on the EFI engine swap I did.

They had to get an adapter piece custom machined...whole job ended up costing $300 or $400 mainly in machining.

complete engine rebuild, about 6k. new rings, new main bearings, new cam, new gaskets etc.
i did a top end rebuild myself previously for a different car, had the head reconditioned and straightened at a shop for about 1300 bucks. this time, my laziness won.

>including trying to do a rebuild kit on the master cylinder, which fixed it for a while but ended up failing again
did you check the bore prior to fitting the rebuild kit? usually that's a good time to resleeve it, usually done with stainless because it'll outlast the car

I replaced the brake fluid on my motorcycle, replaced brake pads, and upgraded to braided brakelines.
Motorcycles are great to learn brakes. Just don't try doing BOTH at once.

Painted the whole car with insurance help after the accident. After fixing the driver's front corner I paid to have the rest of the car bodywork done. New passenger mirror cover, parking lot dings removed and the whole thing repainted. Still cost me $2k out of pocket.

>This was a Miata, so there isn't much to paint

No, that was beyond my level of knowledge/expertise at the time. I (probably wrongly) assumed you just got the kit, slapped in the fresh parts and you were off to the races.

It helped sort of for a while but it quickly failed again. Problem I was dealing with were the rear brakes being completely non functional. I had started with the calipers because the system was so full of gunk that I couldn't even try to bleed it without first cleaning the calipers, when I saw the condition of the old calipers when I took them apart, I opted to just replace them. I have never seen what looks like snot come out of a caliper but that's what it looked like. All sorted now though.

I had my lsd redone and it was like 2300? Not too bad since it was a deal on the car itself.

Nothing because I'm not a faggot wrenchlet. Everything on my car is done myself.

>bought a 2022 Dodge Challenger for a city car (work and live in a remote no-road-access town, but have to come into the city all the time)
>works like a fucking charm the first few nights i drive it
>go back to my work town for a few weeks
>get back to the city at 6:00 am on New Year's
>try to get in car, it's covered in ice
>keyfob seems to unlock the driver's side
>can't get door open easily, figure it's just frozen
>give it a few tugs
>nothing
>gently thump against it with shoulder
>nothing
>give it a few solid kicks
>dent the front fender
>run to gas station for hot water, pour it where I think the ice would be
>nothing
>piss on it (really had to piss)
>nothing
>rage and try the passenger door
>opens right away
>unlock driver door
>listen to the sound of $500 flying away as the door folds the fender in
>get cheap Walmart tools to try to stabilize it until I can get new parts
>absolutely fuck the fender and the door, rip a bunch of paint off, more dents
>use the fob to try to unlock the passenger door
>the driver's door suddenly unlocks
>it was the fucking fob the whole time
Still don't know how much it's gonna cost. The fenders I've seen are between $100 and $400, but the door is looking okay enough that I should just be able to get. paint job done

bullshit
2022 challys come with keyless enter n' go which allows you to unlock the door by simply putting your hand under the handle, if the fob is on you the door will unlock.
also just as an aside the doors on a car open outwards, might be handy to remember next time you try kicking it open idk

Never had a shop do anything but I’m gonna have to have them press in some ball joints for me soon.
>>
>>28212452
>bullshit
dunno what to tell you man, it happened lol. Maybe just doesn't work well in the cold
>kicking it open
I'm not going to advocate for my intelligence on this one, but I was trying to break the non-existent ice before trying to open it again

Paid $2400 to have a head gasket redone on a late model direct injected shit-luxobox (supposed head bolt issues on the MY I own). Price included having the head machined, included a 4 month warranty/guarantee, and the work was done in less than 3 days. Also paid $400 even more recently to have the all the o rings going to the turbo, and an oil return line changed out. Some of the o rings would've been easy to reach myself, but the ones that were actually leaking are far more difficult.
>hurr wrenchlette
Hard to get time to shitpost here when working for Mr. Shekelberg full time while going to school and having 3 other, older shitboxes I work on myself.

the doors do stick when it's wet and cold, it's happened to me, but once i got a grip on the handle i can usually get a finger or two in the door gap and pull. challys are squishy, don't hit.
>>
>>28211290
yeah generally masters only fail if the bore is damaged, even scoring that might otherwise only be barely felt with a fingernail is often enough to cause it to fail and it sounds like that's what happened with the rear circuit

Took my Land Rover to the shop I've had major issues fixed at before to diagnose some odd new electrical issues it was having. It cost me $200 to find out a module in the ECU is corrupt making any future problems essentially undiagnosable, my odometer self reports as being tampered with and claims it has over 5 million miles on it, replacements for that module do not exist, complete dash clusters it's embedded in cost more than the value of the car, and if I managed to get a used one off an identical car it still wouldn't matter because the system to reprogram it is no longer available and the last time any shop around here did it they had to pay some 3rd party hacker several thousand dollars to reverse engineer a workaround. And even if I did all that it would just let them run the diagnostic, not necessarily fix the issue I went in for. He told me I'd be better off selling it, but we both agreed that would be a shitty move.

I later figured out it the problem was due to a $45 fuel sensor which changed myself. That was a year and a half ago and it hasn't blown up yet.

bought a V70R with some rotten body panels and a lot of electrical issues for $3500, basically rebuilt the thing from the ground up fixing all problems plus manual swap, new head, stage 2 tune with new intercooler, exhaust, injectors, fuel pump, interior, i'm into it for about $8500 now cause I do everything myself
