Considering that supercars are slower on straight line than drag cars, slower on tracks than race cars and less practical than normal cars, are they mostly about aesthetics?
>>
thats a loaded statement. but yeah, most the time when people buy them they take them out twice a month to cruise around town to show how cool they are then they garage it for 6 months until next season.

"Super car" by their nature is just something pompous engineers like Enzo Ferrari sold to rich people who wanted to pay anything just to own something with Enzo's name on it. Enzo Ferrari himself loathe these people. he said "My customers tongue my greasy wop anus" and proceeded to sell them exclusive goyslop in car form to fund his personal projects.

Buying a super car is one of the oldest automotive humiliation rituals that the rich have the exclusive privilege of taking part in. many times these cars are not worth the money. you aren't getting that much in R&D, parts, or build quality. a Lamborghini Gallardo for example, is just an R8 with the price jacked up. you're paying to be seen in a more exclusive R8. then VAG holds back the performance of the R8 so as to make the Gallardo's price seem justified. this is how VAG made lamborghini profitable.

Ultima is one of the few examples of "what if we actually made the car "super". and the result is a design dating back to the 90s that still mogs damn near everything today besides something like the AMG project one (a race car for the road) or that McFarty one-seater electric fan car thing. its still the fastest non-open wheel car at the top gear test track.

Gordon Murray thought the car was such a novel approach to super car design amongst your typical pompous shit that he used it to build the Mclaren F1 while merely paying lip service to the shitty NSX. which is also part of the same pompous humiliation ritual circle jerk. when you buy a car like this, nothing is wasted. all your money goes into the car, not the prestige of owning said car.
>>
>>28211893
Honorable mention to Mosler, who tried to upset the super car industry in much the same way. all of your money goes into the car. it didn't even have a "designer" to make it look cool and stylish, which is why it looked so ugly and bare.

really skinny ass tires pulling .9 G, with a curb weight that makes even a NSXR look pigfat.
>>
>>28211893
>Lamborghini Gallardo for example, is just an R8 with the price jacked up.
Gallardo was developed first. Piech always wanted the daddy developed first, to set the standard, and then have the lesser variants decontented but still of a level of quality higher than if things were done in reverse. It's why even the Golf was embarrassing Mercedes in that period too.

a super car is something built for Group C and then made road legal to exploit a loophole to continue racing said group c after its no longer allowed?

That's cute but in your quick googling you got key details wrong.

Still doesn't matter, the original point stands

you never had a point, since there aren't even any lap times of that thing. you'd have to ironically use the performance of the race car as a gauge for anything. meaning its a race car.
>>
>>28212011
>you never had a point

My point is you don't know what a supercar is

whats the point of this thread, you just want examples within your retarded general statement?
>>
>>28212014
you didn't post any example to begin with, since your race car converted to road car has no lap times.

what are you even contesting at this point? what is the point of this>>28211951 retarded post?

Porsche literally chose between racing as a C90 or a GT1 and the benefits of doing the latter were more largely theoretical as they won on reliability anyways, running heavier and on narrower tires in exchange for a larger fuel tank. Here's a Japanese entered C90 962 from the same race, and the Kremer K8 LMP that started on the front row was also a 962 with the roof removed.
>>
>>28212016
>since your race car converted to road car has no lap times.

the dauer is a 100% a road car based off a racing chassis, literally the the bog standard definition of a supercar for as long as history goes

And while the Dauer doesn't have any official laptimes, the chassis its based off literally had the fastest n-ring time up until recently:6:11:13

the point is it's one of the fastest things on the road as a default and was considered the pinnacle of supercars for decades
>>
>>28212024
>uses the performance of the race car to make a case for his race car for the road being faster than other race cars on a track that didn't even feature the fastest prototypes from that era to begin with
why am i not surprised you were going to make exactly this retarded point i knew you were.

the Porsche wasn't even the Pinnacle of prototypes. why didn't you just post a street legal F1 car and cite the fastest F1 times?

>why didn't you just post a street legal F1 car and cite the fastest F1 times?

Because that's not a supercar, something for the millionth time you don't understand the definition of

If you want a modern example of something thats faster than anything theres shit like this too
>>
>>28212037
The 956 was the fastest prototype in the world in 1983 and for a while yet after that and the 962 won at least one race every year except 1992 through to 1994. Besides the XJR-15 having some mechanical similarity to early Jaguar Group C cars, none of the cars that eclipsed it had the sort of producibility or ease of operation to have been viable to turn into a street car.

The Dauer 962 is much heavier and has much less downforce, mind you evidence suggests basically just straight up faster than a McLaren F1 still.

neither is an actual race car. of which you are basing the performance of the street legal variant of on.
>If you want a modern example of something thats faster than anything
But that got shat on. it only held its record at leguna seca very briefly. its also fat and clumsy compared to the fastest shit out there.
>>28212060
>The 956 was the fastest prototype in the world in 1983
yea, cause there was no one else in the world really participating. so its not really an impressive feat. Porsche bankrupted themselves being the only ones dumping money into this for awhile while their road cars became outdated.
>none of the cars that eclipsed it had the sort of producibility or ease of operation to have been viable to turn into a street car.
If you can turn a open wheel race car into something road legal, you could turn damn near anything into a "street car" and slap some leather/turn signals on it. most manufacturers saw no point in doing so. if Toyota or Nissan wanted to re-purpose one of their race cars for road legal use they could, but no one would buy it. Nissan only made a single R390 for this reason, too.
>>
>>28212086
>errm ackchyually youre wrong x doesnt suck because y exists

More like op says all x suck, someone posts example of x not sucking and then op goes "nooo not like that!!!"

I've never seen anyone be so retarded to claim racecar-based cars are not supercars considering all supercars have some percentage of race car DNA

So yeah this board sucks because of retards like op

Ironic considering you're the one claiming there is no distinction between a pure race car and a supercar based off one

I gave the race example because it gives you a metric of how insanely fast the car itself in

Unless you want to claim the Dauer 962 LM isn't fast, that could be another retarded hill for you to die on
>>
HOLY FUCKING SHIT. STOP ARGUING ABOUT DAUER. IT'S JUST AN EXCEPTION. ONLY 10 OF THEM WERE EVER BUILT WHILE THERE ARE 10 000 LAMBOS AND 10 000 FERRARIS BUILT EVERY YEAR
>>
>>28212201
>I gave the race example because it gives you a metric of how insanely fast the car itself is
it doesn't. its like using the performance of the Viper GTS-R to get an idea of how fast the road going viper is. there's going to be a pretty big gap between the actual race spec car, and the road car.
>Unless you want to claim the Dauer 962 LM isn't fast
"Fast" is very different from "faster than race cars" and "fastest" both of which aren't true in road legal form.
>>

The 962 is a car that literally just cold starts like a regular car, most more advanced race cars require a whole fucking warmup process and/or trained engineers just to get them running. It's not a top secret one off factory race car, it's just something you could buy and jump in and drive, if it had been 2025 rich guys would have been buying them to run at your local track day.
>>
>>28213452
that's nearly all race cars from that era outside of Formula One/Indy. Jaguar and Nissan even put their group C engines into road cars. you can buy kit cars that function like old group c cars with engines more radical than anything they originally raced with.

the 962 wasn't doing anything novel, other than actually being built in higher numbers.
