Me: Hey auto companies, I want to sell you an idea.
Auto companies: Uh, Ok.
Me: Start with a truck. Any truck you have.
Auto Companies: Ok.
Me: Now enclose the whole top like the pop top from a Wrangler or an old Ford Bronco. Follow me?
Auto companies: We think so. Ok.
Me: Now here's the kicker. Lower the whole profile by 30% and make it a car. You get the best of all worlds by improving the aerodynamics for overall CAFE mpg, tires are cheaper, you can have either an old school wagon OR open truck bed car like an El Camino or Ranchero and haul either people or supplies. What do you say? Huh?

Car companies: It'll never sell. It's a car.

They may be on to something...

Didn't sell the first time. Why try a 2.0 version that will onlybe more gay than the first version?
>>
>>28213246
And a huge auto company basically already tried it with the Honda ridgeline.
>>
>>28213216
So a low slung truck?
Kinda like a 2wd hilux?
>>
>>28213246
the Hispanic population has exploded since. A new El Camino would sell better than anything.
>>
>>28213283
No. They would buy them used but not new. just like now the 1.0 version.
>>
>>28213216
Sounds great, but it could be even better. You know what's really "in" right now? Offroad cars. How about we give it a 3" lift and install oversized offroad tires on it from the factory? Maybe add some plastic cladding on the side to make it look rugged.

Hmm. We could charge extra for a factory lift option.
Not a bad idea, anon.

Think it was a case of GM trying something new like 15+ years ahead of its time and considers it a failure because it was preposterously expensive and nobody bought it?

wtf is the point of a truck or a SUV that has no ground clearance? Even low end pickup trucks have active aero and the higher end trims have air suspension that lower the trucks at high speeds. Tire price wouldn't change much because you're still going to need 18'' or larger rims to clear the massive brakes new trucks have.
>>
>>28214097
>wtf is the point of a truck or a SUV that has no ground clearance?
For when it basically never leaves pavement? Same point of a car?
>Even low end pickup trucks have active aero
huh? No they don't? Show me a single truck with "active aero".
>and the higher end trims have air suspension that lower the trucks at high speeds
No they fucking don't, you just described a Bugatti Veyron.
>Tire price wouldn't change much because you're still going to need 18'' or larger rims to clear the massive brakes new trucks have.
Do you even like cars? Because even Honda Civics come with 18" wheels.
>>
>>28214106
>For when it basically never leaves pavement?
You know stuff can cover the pavement like snow, right?
>Show me a single truck with "active aero".
The Ram 1500 and the GM's have active grille shutters. The F-150 has an active front air dam. Powered running boards technically count as well.
>No they fucking don't, you just described a Bugatti Veyron.
Where the fuck do you live if you think that's not a thing?
>Do you even like cars?
Modern cars? Hell fucking no. The fact that shitboxes like a Civic have nigg rims like that is one of the many reasons I will never own one.
>>
>>28214117
>You know stuff can cover the pavement like snow, right?
Do you think every vehicle with less ground clearance than a pickup truck is simply unable to drive in snow?
>active grille shutters
EUROFAG DETECTED those are cooling vanes, that isn't active aero.
>Where the fuck do you live if you think that's not a thing?
In the US where cars outside of high end luxury, and exotics simply don't have those things. Pickups don't lower on air suspension from any manufacturer. Neither do SUVs and its not automatic to lower down a couple inches, nor would those cars be affordable by most people.
>one of the many reasons I will never own one.
Are the bigger reasons you're retarded and poor?

>Do you think every vehicle with less ground clearance than a pickup truck is simply unable to drive in snow?
You can drive anything in the snow. There's being able to do something and being able to do it effortlessly with zero worries or fucks.

>EUROFAG DETECTED those are cooling vanes, that isn't active aero.
They close off to improve aerodynamics... Literally the definition of active aero. You know active aero isn't just for downforce, right?
Pickups don't lower on air suspension from any manufacturer.
lmao.
>Normal ride height (NRH) offers 8.7 inches (221 mm) of clearance as measured from the base of the door sill. Aero mode lowers the truck 1/2 inch (15 mm) from NRH. This change improves fuel efficiency by as much as 1% and is activated by the speed of the vehicle. Off-Road 1 lifts the truck 1 inch (25 mm) from NRH to improve clearance. Off-Road 2 doubles that lift to 2 inches (51 mm) over NRH for even better off-road capability. Finally, the Entry/Exit mode lowers the truck 2 inches (51mm) from NRH for easier entry, exit, and cargo loading.
>Are the bigger reasons you're retarded and poor?
I got money in the bank because I make smart vehicle decisions. You go ahead and pay $40k for an econobox.

>>28214170

>There's being able to do something and being able to do it effortlessly with zero worries or fucks.
Ground clearance has little to do with driving in snow on roads, especially in urban and suburban areas.
>They close off to improve aerodynamics...
No, they're for thermals not improving aerodynamics of a fucking brick. You can block off the radiator, run a higher thermostat, and let the engine get out of cold idle faster, basically a thermodynamics trick, not aero. On what planet do you think a grill vent would improve aero enough on a PICKUP TRUCK?
>some shit about air suspension on an unknown vehicle
Awesome, I didn't say it didn't exist, its not a "common feature" on trucks and SUVs.
>I'm smart and rich and drive 30 year old rusted shitboxes!
You're one of those people acting smug about money in the bank while depriving yourself from anything nice.
>>
>>28214201
>Ground clearance has little to do with driving in snow on roads, especially in urban and suburban areas.
You clearly don't live somewhere with real winters then. Because the side roads here don't get plowed and they turn into a nightmare of ice ruts that will even trap lifted trucks. Having ground clearance is definitely an advantage. The roads here are always are littered with watermelon sized snow/ice chinks that fall off of vehicles. An inch or two of ground clearance can mean the difference between nothing and a new engine if you ever hit one.
>Awesome, I didn't say it didn't exist, its not a "common feature" on trucks and SUVs.
I see hundreds of trucks and SUV's equipped with it daily so yeah I'd say it's pretty common.
>On what planet do you think a grill vent would improve aero enough on a PICKUP TRUCK?
All these stupid little aero tricks do add up and help with the efficiency which is why modern pickups get 20-over 30mpg.
>You're one of those people acting smug about money in the bank while depriving yourself from anything nice.
lol no. I work hard and play hard. I could just never spend $40k on a commuting appliance like that when a cheap shitbox does the same job. If you want to flex buy a fucking Rolex. Nobody is looking up to you in your $40k Civic.

>Car companies: It'll never sell. It's a car.
Yup, answered it yourself. From the NPC standpoint it's now unsafe, you can't see in traffic, it's dangerous in rain, harder to get in and out of, has less space (doesn't matter if it's the opposite, NPC mindset), and worst of all, it's going to look like a wagon? Wagons give the majority of new car buyers the ick.

Interchangeable roofs, on the other hand, solve this issue. We had the Pulsar before that actually was sold with various roof options, but I personally like the Mercedes VRC that was never anything but a concept. Pickup bed? Convertible? Coupe? Wagon? Yes. Good luck meeting regulations when attempting to make it a body on frame vehicle with truck-like construction (to be legally sold as a car), however.
>>28214097
Older American cars were in many ways trucks. You want body on frame, a V8, bench seats and the capability to tow multiple tons? Okay - but I'm not thinking about a truck - I'm thinking of the Crown Victoria and every single similar older American car like it.
Ever seen that bulky-looking Cadillac limo the recent US presidents have all ridden in? It's a truck with a limo body and a sedan truck grafted on. Ever seen those big, old Soviet-era black luxury sedans like the ZIL? Basically heavy duty trucks with sedan bodies thrown on as well.
I think RR Phantom-sized, high end luxury sedans could work coming from a truck chassis, but definitely not in the weird pop-top way OP may be thinking.
>>
>>28214223
Why would you ever want a useless trunk over a useful bed? If you ignore the trunk of a Crown Vic and the bed of a crew cab F-150 and compare the two what's the difference between the two? Pretty much nothing. Modern trucks are just sedans that CAN be used for truck things but don't need to be used for truck things. People will always buy them over a sedan that can only do sedan things.
>>
>>28213216
>Car companies: Government says it's a car. Cars have to get 60 MPG city else CAFE taxes kick in. Also Tanisha wants to "sit up."
Fixed it.
>>
>>28214212
>You clearly don't live somewhere with real winters then.
I do and have. But to pretend there can't be a low down truck because rural bumpkins above a certain lattitude may not be able to make the off-road journey to reach Sneed's Feed supply is stupid.
>All these stupid little aero tricks do add up and help with the efficiency which is why modern pickups get 20-over 30mpg.
Yeah, has nothing to do with modern engines. Wait'll you hear what sports cars fuel efficiency is capable of!
>lol no. I work hard and play hard.
No you don't, you're european and can't.
>>
>>28214250

those maybe back in the day but today do those even sell? I rarely see one, could be a smol niche. Maybe better, something similar, a convertible 4dr car, that u can also remove the hardtop & trunk lid (if u want it all open) but can also be a 'car.'
I think the closest u could probably get would be to put those 'convertible' features on a modern cuckover, which seem popular today.
>>
>>28214092
It also had strong competition from GM
>>
>>28214213
A guy I knew years back claimed his diesel rabbit pickup would get 68 mpg if he kept his speed down at 55 mph max. He apparently rebuilt the engine at some point with a little bit of turning... allegedly.
>>
>>28213216
imagine walking out to your car and seeing your brown 5'0" neighbor huffing and puffing spinning the wheel on his purpose-built jeep topper winch.
>>
>>28214410
Ah yes, GM making a product ahead of its time, then making a slightly better product that makes much more sense at the time only to shoot itself in both feet.
>>
>>28213216
Similarly, the Nissan EXA had a notchback or wagon rear-hatch that could be replaced in minutes. It also had a T-top.

>>28214299
>they changed it into a van at some point.
The second generation existed as a pick up based on a Skoda or a van based on a Seat.
They were entirely unrelated but both sold as VW Caddy.
The third gen was just the van then.
>>
>>28216860
>Similarly, the Nissan EXA had a notchback or wagon rear-hatch that could be replaced in minutes. It also had a T-top.

Huh. Yeah that's not far off what I'd hope would become more of a thing. Pick and choose between a trunk lid, hatchback, or wagon canopy. Best of all worlds.
