I'm getting my scooter up to snuff and I plan on taking it north up the Pacific coast highway as far as I can manage for some iron butt training. Anyone ever do the southern portions of PCH and have suggestions for must see sights or must ride roads? We love holiday weekends.

Hello. I am not an auto enthusiast but I'm not opposed. I require something to get around large distances. Im attracted to motorcycles due to their small size and how cheap they seen to be. My logic is i don't need a big car for just me and im not comfortable driving a car. Cars also seem less reliable and more expensive.. Speed isn't a priority but reliability is. Right now I use a bicycle. I don't have a motorcycle license and getting one is a high expense. How much of a difference would a 50cc motorcycle be from just using my bicycle?
Also I've never dealt with any vehicle before. I've never fueled up a car or a bike so I don't know how that works.

When I was riding back home from Chennai down in South India,
I saw two middle-aged (I think) Europeans riding Honda Monkeys (or was it a Grom?) with luggage strapped to its backs. Seemed a bit silly to see, but hey, it's an experience.

>>28592427
It was pretty popular when it launched, but it's really just a scooter in a bike body. That box on the underside isn't the engine, it's just storage. It's even got a Repsol livery.
>>
>>28592435
a 50cc motorcycle is called a moped and they're generally 49cc to avoid regulation. they are for alcohols who lost their job and still need to wage slave. they are illegal on sidewalks (most places) and lack the one thing an actual motorcycle has that keeps the people in cars trying to kill you from killing you which is speed. you also have to mix gas and oil to fill the tank which means a whole lot more ass pain than it's worth, unless of course you're an alcohol who lost their license.

look into electric assist bikes you can build (okay probably not YOU but someone) them from an electric drill even. there are many kits (again probably not for YOU to install) that will simply add e-bike help to your bicycle. so you probably want >>>/n/
>>
>>28592435
>im not comfortable driving a car
what makes you uncomfortable about a car? because if its a danger factor, bikes might not be for you - if its the price, bikes still might not be for you, if its the environment >>>/lgbt/ is 2 blocks down

>How much of a difference would a 50cc motorcycle be from just using my bicycle?
Massively. Even something topping out at 30mph is going to be roughly 3x faster than you'll ever achieve under leg power on a bicycle over distance.
>>
>>28592435
first, don't ride any motor vehicle on the road without some lessons or at least getting your L so you know what to do and how to stay safe. second a 50cc is gonna be slow for a bike but will get you way farther than a bicycle obviously because it has a fucking motor, the tradeoff between a 50cc and an ebike is the scooter will be a bit faster and go farther but you cant take it on bike paths so most people get ebikes these days for that versatility. I'd take a look maybe you can test ride a ruckus at a honda dealer?
>>28592445
yeah I know it's just a scooter, it's automatic after all, but I mostly like the way it looks compared to a scooter and also the low displacement (insurance), no-one makes a 110cc real motorcycle.

Surprisingly Peter Griffith did an oil change with oem oil filter. Coolant is newer, it's just neglected brake fluid, pads, and a unscrubbed chain.
It's got a factory pro carb kit innit bruv' needles, jets, etc. The things fuckin headlights and windscreen has that fresh plastic softness on the surface when you touch it. There is a tidy tail as well as deleted turn signals, inside of the seat is a box module that allows the respective circles on the brake light light be used as turn signals instead (it will blink when you press the brake too)

Is it possible to stretch out a rear brake cable? Is there some kind of safety system, within the cable, possibly sheath-based, that causes the cable to stretch out past a certain force threshold? I know most of you 80iq zoomers don't even know what kind of brakes you have, and if you did, they wouldn't be drum brakes like mine. Bike's an 02 Vulcan En500.

Oh I see what you mean now. I thought you meant could you stretch it purposely to fit a longer swingarm or something and still use it. It would break.

Can it get stretched from severe use? You'd be more likely too see it bulging in some areas or leaking at the crimp from severe use if it was failing. I suppose it could theoretically stretch slightly from use, but I've never seen that happen.
What's the situation you're dealing with?
>>
>>28592683

New tyres got delivered just before the weekend, I haven't had fresh rubber for years should be nice.
>>
>>28592683
My situation is that my old rear drum brakes were jamming. Don't know why. I've since swapped the rear brakes out. Upon reassembling the bike, I find the rear brake cable way too long. Perhaps it's because I haven't forced the rear axle to the rear, as that requires applying the brakes. Or maybe it's because I made the chain slightly too short. My options are now shortening the brake cable, or ordering a new one. Maybe I should have forced the axle to the back before asking this question...

>my original question
Anyway, I was wondering about a safety mechanism, wherein if you horse stomp your brake pedal way too hard, it would kinda slide out an extra length of brake cable. If that's not the case, I may have to shorten my brake cable.
>>
>>28592688

Of course. It's probably cheap enough to replace just to see what happens. It'll save you the worry, and you can move on to the next thing if it doesn't solve your problems.

Not that anon, there should be a cable adjuster. Follow the cable and make sure its not getting caught on anything too.

It could also be that you need to lubricate parts of the brake. Its a mechanical system and therefore needs lubrication.

Buy a scooter or something electric.
Scooters require a car license and insurance. E-bikes fall into a closing grey area you can take advantage of now, but not forever.

Also Moped is a special designation for a vehicle that fits very specific build requirements. By law they must be (manufacturer) speed limited to ~45km/h , 30 mph or even even slower, And a lot of places still require you to receive an endorsement similar to a motorcycle endorsement but its only a written test of shit like identifying road signs.
The nature of mopeds makes them only fit for hobbyists with other vehicles for general transportation.
During covid I rode my moped full-time while I decided if I wanted to get a full motorcycle license, but it was extremely unreliable; Basically once a week I was either walking home or delayed at least 1 hour by issues. Once covid restrictions started to lighten and people started using their cars again it became less viable to operate full-time.
>>
How come there are no domestic brands targeting the economy market or the 50cc-125cc range? Why is it even more ine sided in favor of the Japanese than cars? A good budget domestic bike would probably bring costs down and be better for entry level.

just had my first real case of road rage lads
>riding in front of some dickhead in one of those giant cuck trucks blasting his high beams at both my mirrors
>it's a two lane road so i slow down to wait for him to go around me
>he passes me, i flash my high beams at him a few times
>he gets back into the lane in front of me and comes to a complete stop in the middle of the road
>tiny little asian man half my height gets out and starts yelling at me in some silly accent for riding too slow
>i basically shrug and tell him to turn his high beams off (forgot to ask him how riding below the speed limit is worse than stopping in the middle of the road to get into an argument)
>he has enough, gets back into his truck and takes off, i take off and follow him for about ten minutes
>eventually he gets mad enough about me chasing him that does a u-turn on a roundabout
>i let him go and get back to my drive
chasing people is really fun, will definitely do this next time someone annoys me

I think electric motorcycles look like a lot of fun but the range limit make them so niche
Livewire one says it has a sustained "highway" range at 55mph of 108 mph
Giving them absolute full credit, this doesnt even get you from Queens, NY to downtown Philly, let alone with the fact that highway speed is more like 75mph than it is 55mph.
Picking two major adjacent cities at random off a map in the same state elsewhere in the nation, it doesnt get you from Cincinnati to Columbus. So the fact of the matter is you have a vehicle that is more or less limited to the city you live in and that cities surrounding area.
Allegedly it fast charges from zero to full in an hour, and EV charging is fairly common these days, but where does that leave you? A really good loop, if you ask me, is about 45 miles in the 45-65mph range. So if you're more than half an hour on the highway from a local good loop that loop is out of the question without stopping to charge for an hour. A track day is almost completely out of the question with multiple one hour stops to charge if they have a fast charger there.
Cars can get away with it - by weighing 4000 pounds. For a bike its so limiting.
>>
>>28593128
Yeah, I almost decided to buy a Surron but now I might actually get a Del Mar after all.
However, I checked the insurance rates and some insurers demand ridiculous premiums for Livewire bikes. Imagine paying 300 EUR/month instead of 60 or cheaper for Ultra Bee.

>>28593184
Good thing I don't have to deal with these distances and I have no desire to spend hours a stretch in the saddle.
For me taking a pause every hour to just walk around a new place, do some work on my laptop and just relax is a valid mode of travel. In fact being forced to pause might even better for me, as I tend to push myself beyond enjoyable distances.

Its what they always say
In America 100 years is a long time
In Europe 100 miles is a long way
When I lived in NYC my then GF and I would often day trip to Boston on the weekends, about four hours one way, something like 200 miles.
>>
I'm really tempted to buy a Moto-Guzzi. I'm in Texas so there are actual dealers. I like the look, I like the shaft drive, and they just look like relaxing, fun bikes.

Am I in for suffering because of the siren song of quirky and Italian, compared so a Suzuki cruiser?

I'm also interested in a moto guzzi. I'm apprehensive about italian reliability as well, but it feels like they eliminate as much as possible with it by making it a shaft drive v twin with both heads poking out each side with easy access to basically everything. My current bike is fine for the time being, so I might just wait a few years till the v85tt's been out longer, but I'm definitely interested in their lineup. All of their bikes make decent power figures without weighing a ton, and the vtwins make them better for cornering than bmw flat engine bikes. I'm honestly surprised more companies haven't gone with a similar setup on their sport tourers

Its not just that, but risk taking behavior is way higher. The US has a single course that you take and have access to any bike you want. Not only that but a lot of people ride unlicensed and uninsured with nearly no consequences. The average european on a 1000cc has been riding for years and gotten accustomed to each bike as he's progressed and has been able to develop his fundamentals in all that time. Americans are either dudes who ride cruisers and never even have to do a 2 point turn, or 20 year olds who got a 600cc as their first bike a year before and then ''grew out of it'' before getting an old 1000cc with no abs or tcs and still hasn't learned what trail braking is yet. Couple that with the fact 90% of guys on bikes just throw a helmet and some harbor freight mechanics gloves on, and ''wow motorcycles sure are dangerous!''. When you think about how cars were basically death traps until around the 90s-2000s, it really starts putting safety into perspective. I personally don't see bikes as being much more inherently dangerous than an 80s sports car, and I'm sure if thousands of 17 year old fiero drivers that wanted to race on public roads started showing up, statistics would be basically the same
>>
>>28593311
I assume this is bait, but I'm bored.

Distance and speed play role ofc, but if you increase the distance between A'Dam and R'Dam 10x you won't get 10x more deaths.
If you believe what r*dditors say, to get a license in some US state you just need to show up at DMV.
To get a license in the Netherlands you have to pass the theoretical exam, then you have to enroll into a riding school, then you have to convince your instructor that you can manoeuvre a bike on a parking lot, then you spend several days/weeks/months riding in traffic, then your instructor decides that you are ready to pass two practical exams and only after that you get your category. You don't even get a full A category if you're too young, so young crotch rocket enjoyers are restricted to sub-50hp bikes.
It doesn't matter if you're some nafri, you'll learn not to kill yourself.

Also, no giant pickups here, no stroads, and in general people who design roads try to make them less deadly than in the US.
>>
>>28593352
I should really test ride the newer older engine, the new engine layout is fine but it is very clinical compared to the carbureted guzzi I used to drive. I wonder if that is because of the injection or the new engine design.

You can find a bunch of cheaper and less deteriorated specimens across the border. Can't you just import one if you like this crap so much?
>>
>>28593456
this the actual answer. and no it's not that easy to get a license but it's almost that easy. in canada which is similar you just need to pass a knowledge test and a subsequent road test a few weeks later, then wait a year I think to get the full license with another road test, there is no requirement of any type of lessons if you can pass the road test and I think the US is easier than even that. the US has the highest road fatality rate of pretty much any first world country, only being beat by a bunch of third world countries in africa, asia, middle east, south america. places that didn't invent the fucking car and should have this shit figured out.

Per mile motorcycles have something like 30x more fatal crashes
Something like 50% of them are single vehicle crashes, aka losing control of your own motorcycle because you suck. This can almost be 100% avoided by simply not speeding. The speed limit is designed for a tractor trailer. It is very hard to crash your bike at the speed limit.
Another 60-75% of the two vehicle crashes also involve speeding. So you knock it down to 4.5x more dangerous by not speeding. Sadly speeding is dangerously.
Now, looking at historical data, that’s about how dangerous driving a car was in the 50s and 60s. That’s pretty interesting to me.
I think this is one of those things that is “don’t tell me THE odds, tell me MY odds” and there’s so much in your power to make motorcycling almost as safe as driving a car.
>>
>>28593608
>This can almost be 100% avoided by simply not speeding.
t. ridelet who has never gotten into a turn to find the city workers put two inches of gravel all over the road or a farmer got out of a field and laid a nice thick layer of mud fucking everywhere.
>>
>>28593618
>I went around a blind curve too fast and hit a road hazard
Skill issue kid
>>
>>28593623
I know multiple people who rode the speed limit and either crashed or almost crashed because there was a bunch of gravel or mud on the road you could not possibly react to in time.
One guy even sued the city and they recognized that at the speed limit you couldnt react in any way but HADDALAYERDOWN which led to injury.
Faggot.
>>
>>28593641
>they couldn’t react in time
Because they were going faster than the conditions allowed
Not that I believe that you know multiple people in this situation. Lots of guys have lots of stories before they find out they got caught on camera
>>
>>28593666
>Because they were going faster than the conditions allowed
yes dude let people ride not 80kmh but fucking 30kmh everywhere so they can react in time.
Riding a bike is inherently more dangerous than driving a car and it always will be, if you dont accept it and ride like a grandpa to """"""mitigate""""" it it's your right but riding perfectly normally, on a well maintained bike, you'll always be at higher risk. Stop behaving like a faggot.
>>
>>28593683
>here’s how you mitigate risk
>but if you don’t mitigate risk it’s risky
Wow, thanks, it’s almost like that’s the whole point of my post, retard
If you want to speed bc that’s how you have fun on a motorcycle go for it
If you’re not willing to slow down to what conditions allow you will get into more trouble than someone who is
Personally, when I want to get some kicks by going fast, I ride to six flags
>>
>>28593693
I'm saying you can still get fucked even when you ride the speed limit and mitigate risks, you stupid motherfucker.
>>
>>28593703
Yeah it’ll still be 4.5x more dangerous than cars if you do what I recommend.
I wrote that out several posts ago.
The fact remains that by definition if you are surprised by a hazard on the other side of a curve and don’t have time to react then you are going faster than conditions allows, and you’ll accept some additional risk.

The only reason I upgraded from an R3 is because I like the feeling of an inline four and the highway capability of a 600. I’m looking at getting a DRZ specifically for canyon riding just so I can have more fun blowing through corners quickly instead of focusing on exit speed/powering out.
Plus I’m still slow as fuck on a 600 lol

If I had that kind of money I would get a H2 and a new truck.

I've had kinetic before, I got it for free. I spent just enough time on it to sell it. I've had a Vespa grande too, and the quality was night and day. moped prices have plummeted in the last couple of years. Even derbis are like $600 at this point. A si, grande, ciao, can get picked up for like $500

Garelli has some of the prettiest bikes around, but I got frustrated with the rubber clutch and lack of performance parts. I know that's old news now and there are tons of shit available. I still think a v1, puch, pa50, are always preferable, all at the same price point. I'd probably take a garelli over a tomos, but for a starter bike, garelli and kinetic would be pretty low on the list

If you already started with the 390 Duke, why not stick to one? Besides there's plenty of them 2nd hand as well, if you want you can also go for the Svartpilen 401 if you want it for the unpaved roads without going full offroad yet. I dunno if I would suggest you to get the 390 ADV X since its almost same as the old 390 ADV which I own and I had to do several mods in order to get it right for offroad, so either save more for the R version, or better yet, just pick the Enduro R, that's what I would do if I would buy a KTM brand new, has the same things, except a simpler TFT screen (good), small headlight, which is bad for night ride, but good for the weight and auxiliary lights are super cheap, biggest issues could be either the seat and gas tank, but for actual offroad its still better since the idea its mostly to be standing on the bike, and 9L still does over 200Km, which on the road you still will have to take a stop to let the engine rest a bit, and what better place to do this than a gas station.

Honda rebel is nice, but beginners shouldn't start with cruisers, you should instead go for the NX500 if you are into the 390 ADV X, but want a Honda.

And if you think you can handle the extra wieght a Royal Enfield has, then the GRR or Himalayan ones are great picks for the price, also considering they got Google Maps integrated already, just be weary of the Himi's tires since they aren't for true offroad, they are more akin for touring, I would suggest on using them shitty CEAT tires with a not so tough offroad, wear them out and then buy actual offroad tires. I you dare to do hard offroad with mud and shit like that, you indeed secure yourself to get a broken leg since those slippery shitty CEAT tires will slip on the mud like a bar of soap, vid related.

So I took my 42 year old CB1000 out today and took the road in pic related today. Apparently there are over 60 curves/corners and a 2000ft change in elevation. Sketchy guardrails that have been there since the darkest of dark ages, like creosoted wooden posts with chains strung between them. That is all the same road in the image.

It was fun.

I very rarely lube the chain
It’s not like a bicycle
There’s lube sealed in the chain with an o ring
When it gets rustier on the outside than I like i knock some off with wd40 and spray some motor oil on it

Chain lube is a meme. Full replacement of sprockets and chains is like eighty bucks. Plus you can deduct the cost of the chain from that anyway, since you're going to be replacing that anyway because of stretching.
>>
>>28594635
Fuck no. Cant remember the last time i lubed my chain. Modern chains are sealed o ring. Unless it looks proper rusty i dont bother.

Scott oilers are ancient, they used to run on the carb vacuum line. Sealed chains became common in the 80s. So there are many many people who remember when you really did need to lube the chain frequently, and old habits die hard
