Sort of. The 690 engine still has that KTM street engine thing where there's not much torque on the low end, meaning you wither nut up and take rough terrain at a faster pace, or you set your revs high and feather the clutch, which has it's own downsides. The air cooled (or oil cooled, don't come after 'zuki fan boys) let you just slap it in first goose it up rough stuff, like you would ag equipment.

Neither one of the older bikes gets anywhere near 60hp though.

Went to the dealership today and sat on a 390 enduro. It was right next to an Adv390 and the similarities were remarkable. It basically looks like an Adv 390 with less stuff on it and bumpier tires. Seat was wide, controls felt close, brakes felt crisp. Couldn't actually test ride it w/o an appt.
Trying to decide if I should roll the dice with a bajaj 390r that has dubious reliability and minimal ruggedness, as 90% of my miles are on road.
Or if I should get a new DR-Z for that japanese reliability and quality.
Or maybe an XR650L for simplicity.
I wish I could test ride them without nonsense but the dealers around here are super reluctant to let guys test-ride stuff.

I haven't ridden the 390, or the new EFI DR-Z. I will say the 650 singles will be slighly less buzzy and lower RPM on the highway than the carbed DR-Z, at the cost of weight and a less modern suspension. I have __heard__ this problem is solved on the EFI DR-Z.

I find the dr650 easier to work on and find 3rd party support for, but the front and rear suspension on the Honda is adjustable.

I was almost sold on a dr650 until I rode my buddy's carbed klr650 and it was so unbelievably sluggish and unresponsive. I know the DR/XR is relatively light compared to the KLR, but they're still beefy and air-cooled.
Which is kinda why I'm leaning more DRZ, but with a re-jet and pipe the DR/XR might be about as good and less buzzy, but buzzy doesn't really bug me.

my situation is damn near identical anon. I do have an OHV area 10 minutes away, though, and another 25-30 minutes. No mountains or canyons here so it's just like unmaintained roads and old railroad shit beyond that, and some privately-owned mx areas and hard enduro trails.

I've never had a motorcycle license because when I tried taking the test I failed for not putting my foot down at a stop sign even though I did stop I just balanced for 1 second while looking to the side and in my state you need a friend with a motorcycle license to take you to the test and my only friend with the license lives 200 miles away and I didn't want to ask him for help again. I'm not a ducati guy but I do like the 999. The bio-mechancial undertones of it is like a Giger painting but utopian rather than distopian and gritty its polished and refined. Surprisingly reliable in the context of Italians from what I read too. If I ever had one I'd probably put halos in the headlamps and make the lower LED speedometer round instead to match the top one.
