>yamaha didnt invent the fireblade or the adventure bike

Yamaha is credited with rekindling popular interest in dirt worthy motorcycles that could also be ridden on the street. In 1968 they introduced the hugely successful DT-1 based on a 250cc two-stroke engine. Other manufacturers soon followed with similar models called "enduros".

>With the introduction of the DT-1, Yamaha essentially defined a new market for motorcycles.[5] A Dual-sport motorcycle built for off-road riding, the light and slim DT-1 was equipped with block-pattern tires and had sufficient ground clearance. Its design put it at the cutting edge of off-road bikes at that time.

Stop resisting, just say THANK YOU YAMAHA and get along with it

Anyways answer me, dealership to replace the tire, DIY, or cyclegear? Whats the cheapest or most practical? Dealers only have shinkos btw.

>>
>>28645384
buy front & rear stands if needed, pull wheels off, pay cycle gear like $40 or whatever to change the tires. not worth DIY but not worth showing up to dealer or CG with the bike or they'll charge you hundreds on top of the tire cost
>>
What tools do you regularly pack? I got a flat for the first time in 10 years, and even though I keep a patch kit and pump, I was really wishing for some pliers to get the screw out. I don't wanna go overboard and keep a whole tool bag, kind of would rather get a decent multitool and wait till that no longer gets the job done.
>>28645384
I've taken my bike to a dealer and done it myself exactly once each, which is enough for me to realize I'd rather just take my wheel off and let them change it at CycleGear. Paying labor cost for someone to remove my wheel is a waste to me, but changing the actual tire myself is something I'm not willing to get good at.

Alright, bros. Somebody set me straight. When is it bad to add more lean angle. Let's say you're heading into a turn, and you need to turn more. I think, "Whatever, I'll just lean more." Is this not the right way to navigate a turn? Eventually, you run out of contact patch, right?
>>
>>28645409
Step 1. Don't run out of contact patch and try to lean more.
Step 2. Exit the corner.

If you're going to enter a corner hot enough where you think an ordinary sitting position is going to require you to shift your weight closer to the inside, then do so prior to tip-in.

Been there. Got t-boned on my 250 a decade ago and stopped riding on the road, only went out on my dirtbike for trail rides. Took me so long to get over the feeling of being about to lowside on the road since my brain had been rewired for sand and mud.

Even if you're not going in hot, practice already sitting with one cheek on the seat until it feels comfortable and you start to notice the difference between upright and cheek out, shoulder down. Best way to gauge is to watch your chicken strips after every ride, not as a means of 'hell yeah im turning cool" just so that you can connect what you FEEL as the edge vs what is actually the edge.
>>

Riding with knobblies on some of the sealed portions of the offroad tracks gave me the shits lmao. I'd somewhat take back my advice, I assumed road bike + road tyres. THere's probably more breakaway feel on the edge of knobblies on tarmac, I'd assume?

>There's probably more breakaway feel on the edge of knobblies
I have no got dang idea. I've thrown myself into a lot with these tires thinking I'll find the limits. You know, just a little bit of slippage here or there before knowing that, "yeah, this is too much for this tire. Back off." And then I biff it on a slow 20-30mph intersection. I'm gonna go check out that intersection and see whats what.

2400 miles in 2mo is a lot. But it's normal to ride a new bike quite a bit especially if it's your first one. I think I did like 1,000 miles the first month I had my sportster, pretty much all my free time was spent riding. But I really average 7500 miles a year and that's in AZ where you can ride all 12 months if you're as stupid as I am.

There's a myth that the Izh 56 was supposed to be called Saturn, hence the logo and the twin cylinder the Jupiter as it is today and the Jupiter was supposed to have a logo of a Jupiter on the tank.
They deemed it was too expensive and unnecessary to have a separate assembly line for Jupiter tanks, so they all had the Saturn tank, then they didn't even call the 56 Saturn, but named it Planeta.

The whole Izh lineup at that time was space themed, but only the Planeta and Jupiter were really a thing.

Like the Izh Orion which had fuel injection back in the 50s or the Izh Vega, a 2 rotor rotary powered bike.

>Somebody set me straight.
>When is it bad to add more lean angle.
It's generally bad to add more lean angle if you're adding more throttle or brake, you can add more lean if you're subtracting throttle or brake
>Let's say you're heading into a turn, and you need to turn more. I think, "Whatever, I'll just lean more." >Is this not the right way to navigate a turn?
It is correct, however this requires taking a line with enough headroom to make changes (taking a slower/softer line, you rarely want to go 100% anyways, even at the track)
>Eventually, you run out of contact patch, right?
Yes, eventually you run out of grip, grip has to be divided into turning, braking, and accelerating but there's ways to maximize grip because less lean = more grip and more lean = less grip, so there is always a balance to be found

>>
>>28645501
Alright, I think I understand. I remember in the msf, they told us to keep a steady throttle through the turn. Not accelerating or decelerating. Do all your braking while you're in the straight, besides trail braking.
>>
>>28645400
>>28645393
>>28645391
So do I need to buy the rire there or can I bring my own tire? Also would a scissors jack be fine holding my bike up while I bring it over cause I just don't want to buy a lift? I use a jack for chain maintenance btw.
>>
>>28645514
Braking hard in the straight and knowing your braking limits are just as important to "going fast" as the actual turning. This seems really obvious but I didn't think about it for a long time.
>>28645528
You just bring them the wheel with the old tire still on it. They charge $30 more per wheel if you don't buy tires from them, so either get them to price match or make sure you're saving more than that buying somewhere else
IDK what kind of bike or jack you have but I can picture myself right now, freeing the rear wheel from the axle and then having the bike fall forward. If you have some spots on the frame to add jack stands or even blocks, that would be good. Otherwise ratchet strap the hell out of it and hope for the best

Accept that you are going to crash and possibly/probably die one day if you are riding hard in unpredictable roads. Anyone who says otherwise is lying to you and a larper.

If you can't accept injury/death, then don't ride hard, in fact its probably best not to ride at all. You are sitting on a engine strapped to two wheels instead of 4 exposed to the elements. Ask yourself how you overcame the fear of riding at all, and maybe you can use the same ignorance to over the fear of leaning.

I’ve only bought them a handful of times but if there’s 80 riders that’s maybe a couple hundred bucks?
Some guys would just publish the full images and you could give money if you wanted but they were retired guys just out there to talk bikes and take pics for maybe a session or two.

Bike hit while parked, tires were probably fine but shop billed insurance for them
Minor crash and tires probably fine but shop billed insurance for them
Besides that I trade my bikes for new bikes, which come with new tires, and bikes rarely last long in my garage
So it’s just always worked out that I’ve never had to buy new tires
Only ever bought one set of tires ever, new tires for the one car I’ve had that I kept a long time

I had a Honda cm200 forever ago and above 55 it felt like it might just decide at any moment to dive into the ditch or blow up. If your highways are 55mph you are probably ok but if it’s 65 or more then traffic will be 5-10 over that and if you are going slower than traffic that can be dangerous.
Don’t get a 125 unless you’re 3rd world or just want to scoot around town. Truly.

Tourers are usually the most comfortable vehicles on the road for riding a long time, perhaps you have unusual body proportions that make them, in stock form, uncomfortable for you
While there are cruisers which are long distance cruisers - the heritage classic, Springfield, fat boy, low rider ST, in current production - “cruising” is usually “boulevard cruising”, ie going down to Main Street area for bar or restaurant.

I am just going to order the tire for my rebel, I called the cycle gear in Mathews about it and they said I can order it to there or take it in with the receipt. Anyways the lowes have one of those cheapo vevor lifts for like $40 should I do that instead? Also when using them do I need to be on a completely level surface and will the front wheel need to be lined up straight when lifting the rear?

The struggle is real. I just wear an airbag vest. The wind getting too my core keeps me from sweating too much. Plus most motorcycles are toys not for (much) utility.

just dont drive like you're in a moto GP race and you'll be fine with just a helmet, also predict car behavior and mistakes ahead of time instead of trying to pass them while they're about to pass the guy in front of them
better safe than sorry. If you're in europe you will encounter much better drivers than in NA, if you live in africa or asia god help your soul

You don't need to wear a leather suit and you don't need to wear it all of the time. The ATGATT people constantly hammer on about it but you only need an airbag vest + boots + jeans if you're not going on a long adventure.
>>
>>28645855

Lots of reasons to get a bike. Lots of reasons to not. In a lot countries, they're more common than cars. Depends on where you live and what you want to do with it. I don't like somewhere warm enough to daily a motorcycle, it's just a toy for me. I have a little dual sport, I fuck around on it and ride on local trails/farm roads. Tons of fun. It works for me, but it's just a toy really. Everyone rides for different reasons.

As for gear, it's not that bad. Jacket + gloves + helmet. Wear decent boots and sturdy pants.
>>
>>28645897
Hello, fellow autist. I find to get better at directions it's best to just ride around and not really give a fuck if you get lost. Go out on a weekend when you have time, expecting to lose your way occasionally. Just don't get lost in the hood.
>>

>it will only start and run choked for quite a while, and once good and hot won't start or run choked.

Checking parts nation, https://www.hondapartsnation.com/oemparts/l/hon/50541736f870021c54bef4bd/1981-ct110-a-parts assuming this is your model, there is a fuel diaphragm just behind the petcock. You need to check both, because as the engine warms up- it could be draining all of the fuel from the carb bowl to where it can't idle while parked. I have had it in the past on other machines, not specifically motorcycles, where the petcock will clog and allow some fuel though, but as fuel flow increases it will start to constrain it. These are on gravity-fed systems but if the diaphragm is not working your system could become gravity-fed.
>>
>>28645897
>Opposite. It is scary thinking about riding then I ride and enjoy it a lot but have no idea where to ride because I am horrible with directions so I go the same 4 places.
Agreeing with >>28645950 in that the best adventures are the ones you're not sure you're going on. But also if you really are scared of getting lost and don't want to put a quad lock on your handle bars for your phone. I highly suggest this thing
https://www.amazon.com/Beeline-Moto-Motorcycle-Waterproof-Adventure/dp/B0DL72W7PT
It's tiny, maybe slightly above the size of a watch. Fits on your handlebars, and all it gives you is a route and a compass. You put in a destination, even if it's just a small town nearby that has a gas station and some food, and then you follow the arrow.
>>
>>28645935
The only people who ATGATT are redditdads who don't actually ride, they sit around posting pictures of their garage and screech about gear to people who are actually outside having fun.

desu leather is overrated. Mesh jackets are all most of us ever need and if you're in a slide- it's not like you're going to be sliding across a track. You're going to be sliding maybe 100 yards worst case scenario and I doubt anyone in these threads even owns a suit thick enough to do that unless it's some actual motogp gear they got second-hand because they're LARPing.

The Helmet Hair is fixed with a $2 comb and some gel. Or shampoo+conditioner and a sufficiently large sink. I don't even worry about it.
>>
>>28645971
That's pretty violent for a valve tick but that's what I would think it is.
A valve tick that loud probably means that's not the only thing wrong with the engine. So that entire top half has to come off. You could get unlucky and that's the sound of a piston slap. The fact it's that loud means this has been going on for a while and you're likely looking at what could be a bigger engine service than you're willing to put into it. A small engine shop may be able to do it for you if you get it cheap enough for that + engine shop.
>>
>>28645977
Less than £800 asking. For that I'm thinking I could throw in another engine if it's that bad. Anything top end I'm pretty much happy to do (or fail at and revert to option one)

I donnot understand why people use marble sized gravel on their county roads. Does it prevent ruts better than pea sized? Is it consoderably less expensive per square foot of coverage?

I can zip down a red dirt road and the front tire never moves laterally, but the minute the rocks get bigger than a thumbnail the front end starts squirming all over the damn place. Do real knobbies fix this, or do you just fucking gun it and accept your fate should your front tire's lateral acceleration get too high?

long group ride today (5 hours round-trip) but not as enjoyable as the previous groups.
versys dude was a bit of a menace because he just recently got his bike after 5+ years of not-riding so he took every turn stupidly slow and wide, sometimes even going full on the other lane because he was scared to lean. AT and CBR where only seen waiting for us at certain points of the trip because they where booking it
i had to follow versys for navigation reasons and it wasn't fun, i was either worried i'd see him take a car full in the face in front of me or trying to not cut him inside corners/bumping into him.

At least the weather was nice, did you ride during the weekend, anons?

I ride interstates (what you mean by highways) on a TW200 in the right lane. A 300cc naked bike will handle them fine unless you live in the West where interstates travel at like 80mph+ even then you can manage you just will have to stay in the right lane as you will have only 10mph or so of passing power left. There are plenty 55mph state highways in the northeast you can take on a 300cc if you're scared of the interstate.

People ride honda groms full throttle all the time because the bikes are too slow for 50mph+ roads ordinarily and the engines handle it fine i doubt yamaha makes significantly worse engines that cant handle getting close to full engine power. Riding bikes like that on the interstate are mostly bad because they're light and get blown around by wind more of a comfort thing than the bikes being too weak.
>>
>>28646345
Yeah I'm Australian and I used to have a CB300R. The little bike could go 70mph all day long. Your body will give out before the bike does.

You are speaking to a redditdad who spends his days wanting Motojitsu and DanDantheRedditman instead of actually riding, the only purpose of counter lean is to make flicking it back to the other side faster. You'll see people using it a load for gymkhana (really tight slow speed corners where you flick into the next corner right away), and basically no where else besides dirt/sumo because they also have super sharp hairpins sometimes. Otherwise counterlean is just reverse inwards lean, leading to more lean to make the same corner, less stability, higher risk, and slower speed.

You should basically never counterlean above say... 40kmh.

Thats fair, I mean honestly body position isn't that important anyways until you are pro level, you can ride "crossed up" which gives you half of the benefit of your body being on the in, while keeping your head higher up.

That being said, body position is fekin easy to do, so the advice to make people lean in still sticks since its technically safer through reducing lean angle by 4-10% on any turn.

It actually helps funnily enough, that one rider in motogp who was like 6'1" or something (giant sized for motogp standards) could actually carry more corner speed because he has more weight to shift to the in lol. So me on my lil 390 at 6'2" can carry a lot more corner speed than Rossi on his GP bike, assuming I had the skill and tires for it anyways.

Also if you run knobbies I wouldn't be leaning much in any corner that isn't dirt lol, nor do I know how leaning works fully in dirt, from what I've seen dirbikers have a weird body position where they push down on the handle bars and also like to "back in" (drifting) for corners.

I'm not a physics nerd nor can I race MX, but I can tell you my biggest issue on a hard turn in dirt is the shit under my tires moving on it's own. I tried to hit a U on hard pack like I had on tarmac and that's how my bike got it's first wipeout.

Now I put my foot down coming out of turns if I'm gassing it, and that's saved my ass a couple of times now, especially when the rear wants to just run off into the bar ditch.

Yeah I see those dirt and even sumo guys doing the leg out thing a lot. I want to say the sumo guys only do it because of dirtbike culture, because I don't see any point to what its accomplishing on asphalt. The dirt bikes do it I think because they save their back ends from sliding out in the dirt. The thing is the turns in sumo/dirt are way tighter than for sport, its a bit like gymkhana so I'm guessing thats why they stay mostly neutral, sumo guys will lean in like sport guys for faster turns though.

No idea about that, but a lot of track racing just comes down to who has more speed in the straights, so the less you weigh the more time you gain. Thats also why the GP bikes are fucking huge hp beasts instead of smaller machines that could carry more corner speed.

>A 1957 Harley-Davidson with a "suicide shift" has a hand-operated gear shifter and a foot-operated clutch pedal, a system that is challenging for new riders because it requires coordinated, simultaneous use of hands and feet to stop and start. The rider uses their left hand to operate the gear shift lever (or "jockey shift") and their right foot to push the clutch pedal down. To stop, the rider disengages the clutch with their foot, shifts into neutral by hand, and puts their right foot down to hold the bike's weight. The "suicide" nickname comes from the danger and difficulty of the system, especially on hills, where disengaging the clutch, holding the bike, and re-engaging it is a complex maneuver.

luckily I have a huge parking lot near my house

I have always thought I would like to try and get a good quality xr650r, but I have always given up on the idea because it's not in production, I have no idea how to source parts, and I haven't done real wrenching beyond valve checks and tire changes. How hard of a project is keeping a 20 year old bike running?
>>
>>28646487
>Here’s an article saying bigger riders feel their size is a disadvantage
You forgot the article, but yeah bigger riders are disadvantaged because of weight, its all about straight line speed for sport bikes. Its even worse since the weight is placed high up (we sit on top of the bikes) instead of near the bottom. But, when the bike is leaned way the fuck over and you're leaned in, your body is now low to the ground and your extra weight helps shift the center of gravity to the inside of the turn.

Basically the speed you carry in a corner doesn't matter nearly as much as the speed you generate when you can finally wring the neck of the bike.

>>28646490
"“You will see the clear advantage that an extremely smaller rider will gain on a straight, typically 0.2-0.4s."
Yeah its basically saying what I said before and above. Its all about the straights.
>>

I'm the original person who replied.
They can be just personally find the mt07 to not be very comfortable on a 30in inseam. However the mt03 felt fine. I don't have experience with suzuki so I can't say. As for CCs it depends on what roads you plan on riding on in general 250-500cc bikes are manageable for new people and are more forgiving on the throttle. The real factor that changes depending on types of roads is the cylinder count with lower CCs. A twin is the most versatile but a single is good for the City commute. 3 and 4 cyl are going to be better but unless you really really need to git a track or interstate they aren't really worth it with lower CC than 600. Lastly gearing on bikes vary a lot between even bikes with the same engine in a different style.

Good news, the XR650L is still in production, and is incredibly easy to wrench, shares all of the same parts as that 25 year old bike, and are known as basically unkillable, you have to really TRY to kill an XR650.

In terms of durability and long maintenance intervals, you couldn't have chosen a better bike.
>>
>>28646503
The r was water cooled, put out 60ish HP, had fully adjustble suspension, kick starter starter, and an aluminium frame. I'm pretty sure the 650l predates the r, has an air cooled engine at 60% of the power, steel frame, e-starter, and you can neglect the engine nearly the same as a diesel if you want. Lord knows most owners here do.
>>
>>28646540
I don't think there is a ton of compatibility between the R and the L. Maybe the forks, because I have heard of people swapping R forks onto their L bikes.

The US is a puzzle where the objective is to avoid groids. They like dirt bikes because they are easy to steal and can hop over the curb to escape police or do crime. imo a 250cc to 500cc cruiser is nice for starters, the power delivery is very constant and stable and they're comfy

My buddy got his first motorbike recently just like me, but hes hanging out with some group of bikers who have very powerful motorbikes and often leave him behind (other than the one guy who's he actually friends with) by his own admission

I worry that he may get into a bad crash from trying to keep up with these experience bikers and their way more powerful bikes, he told me he already went into gravel once due to failing to take a turn properly with them
what do i do?
