its getting cold and rainy. I think its time to park the Miata for the winter, and take if off insurance.
I need to finish banging out the frame rails so I can fit FM rails, replace the lower alternator bolt, a few other things, and if I have the money, upgrade to a standalone.
so far I have 2300 miles since replacing the rear main seal after scratching the crank. so far no oil leaks. I think I did a good enough job sanding it down.
i replaced the MAF so its running good now, still sucks at cold start.

Anyone ever buy something nationwide? I have Facebook marketplace bookmarks saved for different areas but is there any other preference for sites? Autotempest?

>>
>>28669168
I think autotempest has kinda gone to shit. I've tried to use it recently and hardly turn up any results for not even particularly rare cars. FB marketplace has been the only thing half decent beyond cars and bids/bring a trailer, but I'm always looking for cheap shitboxes not pricey stuff. I've bought one car on eBay but I don't really recommend that

It's called cavity wax but you can't spray it before welding. There are usually access holes to stick in a tube and spray. It's not cheap tho.

interesting, so basically just fill the entire area in the sills with this stuff. its not that expensive like 30 bucks a can, and if it prevents it from going to shit again, it might be worth it.
I was thinking of cutting all the rusty parts out, spraying the fuck out of everything with paint, after welding fresh metal and then emptying a few of these in there.

don't the hard tops leak and cause rust?
>>
>>28678971
Never heard of that.
The hardtop prevents the need for the drainage holes that deposit water through the rear sills. With the softtop only, a rainwater (especially big issue in the UK) gets directed to those drainage holes, which can become blocked. Neglecting those drainage holes is what leads to rear sill rust.
Hardtop avoids that.
>>
>>28678976

>>28678966
Man I wish NBs got their own hardtop design. It's clearly designed for the bar-of-soap NA and looks like it's the wrong hardtop on the curvier NB.

>curvy hardtop doesn't suit curvy NB
wut
>>
>>28679289
The hardtop isn't curvy, it's one smooth arc just like the NA. Go back up to the pic of the NB, the fenders arch back down past the hips, going inwards at the trunk lid panel gap, then back up in the rear center near the third brake light. The bottom rear of the hardtop is a nearly straight line right there while the NB has 3 curves along its width at the rear. The line where the hardtop meets the rear quarter panel underneath each corner of its rear window just looks off to me. Then look at the NA and the quarter panel doesn't arch back down at the trunk lid, so it looks right there.

Hardtop will be the next purchase after I get the ITBs tuned for sure

NA. Really not a fan of modern interiors or styling, nor the smell of new cars. Think it's whatever they make the seat material out of, but they all have a very specific oudor that I dislike.
>>
>>28679706
my NA is the first car I've ever had and its been with me for years
I'd go with the ND
>>
>>28679706
the ND is a better car. not the fault of the NA. just a product of its time. the ND will drive better in every way except steering feel and even then good tires and a sporty, precise alignment will more than make up for it. and that's before even getting into coilovers which make the ND punch so far above its weight class it's not even funny
>>
>>28679706
>>28680641
to add onto this the ND3 diff and steering rack are improved enough from the ND2 that that's the one you should aim for unless you're hell bent on getting more power out of the engine. if you're not touching the engine find a way to get the ND3 instead. if you want more power stick with the ND2 but don't ignore tires/alignment/suspension/brakes, in that order.
>>
>>28680641
>and a sporty, precise alignment
Nta but I have the shop that does my tires do the flyin Miata recommended alignment specs and it's a pretty big improvement over the stock specs
>>
>>28679706
ND unless you have

>a need to mod it to hell and back (money and parts issues on ND)
>>
>>28681041
Next time you get it aligned see if you can sit in it while they do it or have them ballast it somehow. Also see if they can get them to nail the numbers and not "close enough". It will feel even more amazing. There is a difference when you sit in the car.
>>

I think I found a solution to the idle issues when running ITBs. A lot of people advance the idle timing during cold starts to increase idle but it isn't enough on the cold cold days or when there are shocks to the electrical system (AC turning on, fans starting up, etc). My vacuum block will have a line from each runner to get a nice clean signal for the Megasquirts MAP sensor, those are 1/8 NPT, but thanks to chinky engineering the end bung is 3/4-16 UNF. I found a UNF male to 3/8 male fitting, and plan on running a idle air control valve to that fitting from a mid 90s GM. It has 4 wire but instead of PWM it is stepper control so much finer control over the air leak. Wish me luck, it's only a few more days and the ITB manifold will be built and the throttle bodies are going to be bench synced. I need to figure out how the OEM intake manifold works and if there is any coolant that runs through anything or if I have to cap or loop anything.

Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.

I'd like a miata as my first proper car but can't afford one. Should I buy a Clio or something and wait until I'm old and have the money?
Or should I buy a smart roadster for the meantime since it's cheap and fuel efficient?

Thanks buddy. It appears that they ship from China. I guess I'll get raped by taxes if I try to import it. That said 400$ isn't too bad as base. I was really looking for a sard style wing so I could use custom brackets to fasten it down instead of tape (which scares me).
>>28685337

Ordered block heater from a dealer in Canada because they don't stock it in the US. hopefully it's not below freezing when I get it so I can do a radiator flush too since that's just liquid molly rad flush and distilled water and I don't want shit freezing in my engine.
>>
>>28685694
keep in mind I shipped the lip, diffuser, sideskirts and wing all in one go so mby your package would be smaller and cheaper idk
taxes raped me too I think I put down like 3k all in all
yeah I really wanted to drill and use screws but had second thoughts once the wing came
doesn't help that it has no predrilled holes or instructions and I didn't wanna fuck with my boot lid lol
the little hooks that go over the back were bent too much so i used a heat gun for 20 sec or so to bend them out a little and now theyre 90% ish flush
also didn't trust tape that's why I put industrial grade glue as well (tape all around the top plate and glue in middle) and 3 years and 30k km later it's holding just fine, I couldn't pull it off if I wanted to
I did drill the front lip and sides as well as tape and screws for the diffuser
I would have bought the GT VOLTEX wing for ultimate sigmachad energy but it costs more than double and I was gigapoor also roof doesn't open with that one (this one has around 1cm of space at nearest contact point to wing during operation)(btw you will need one person to help you measure THRICE, he holds the pads while you put the wing on them to see if it's nice and flush (well more or less))

>>28685841
how cold does it get? does one really need a block heater for a gasoline engine?
>>
>>28685856
Below 0 quite often. The colder it is, the more fuel dilution in the oil while it warms up, the more fuel in the oil control ring, the more wear. Most wear is from cold starts. I'll also get hot air in the cabin much faster. Theoretically should get the engine to around 90F even if it's freezing
>>
>>28685856
Ok that installation does sound kinda bad. But apparently carbon miata opened a french warehouse like literally 1 day ago so I might be able to get it for much cheaper. A rear diffuser would already make the car look much better. I think I'll start with that first before any of the wing stuff.

I want to mention, ideally if I could find a good deal on a NB,NC id go for it. ( I actually like the NB) My final option would be just to give in and get a ND miata from a dealership cause i really like the NDs the most. In this case, i wouldnt know if i should get used or get brand new. Can someone help me with the pros and cons of this? Obviously the biggest one would be im def getting ripped off if new and throwing tons of money away.

form me getting the ND used just wasn't that big a savings. The car holds it's value well so I went New. Numbers of previous owners also hits the value down the road.

With my 2022 Mazda 3 turbo I just got 25k miles $26k just seamed like a real value. 12k less than new

before ANY aero parts you should get two things:
first off, adjustable coilovers, stock ride is too floaty unless you enjoy driving like a normie and just chilling I guess but stiffer suspension makes the car into a damn scalpel
second an axleback for some better sound, GoodWin Racing has a great selection
>>
>>28686566
Don't use dealer financing, go to your credit union first and get pre-approved and put as much down as you can. Also the nd3 ECU is different than the ND2s and as far as I know it hasn't been cracked yet (and may won't be since the 1 and 2 already have so much aftermarket dev) so if youre planning on power upgrades get a ND2

at least in america, used ND2-3 are still pretty pricey so you might as well get a new car if that's what you're looking at.

if you're fine with an ND1 they can be pretty cheap. but you might regret it (see miata.net ND transmission section)

tyres are OEM ContiViking Contact 6 195/50R16 on the stock wheels cause the factory Potenza S001 on BBS 17 inchers are completely bald in the rear since last summer lol so I'm driving on winter rubber to use it up

Would I be laughed out of town if I bought an automatic miata? I dont want to show off my vehicle I just wanna have fun when I drive

An automatic is the antithesis of fun. By choosing an automatic, you remove an additional point of engagement you have with the car, so unless you have some form of disability, I would strongly advise against it. Autos have their place, but that place isn't in a "fun" car. Pretty sure there was an anon a few months ago that posted his regret on buying an auto, hopefully he'll chime in.

What's the right price for a Miata NA in good condition and with 100.000 km ?
>>
>>28692088
why get an NA when you can get an ND unironically? I can almost bet money they will be similarly priced
>>
>>28692093
Because the NA is highly aesthetic and also memorable in all portions of its shape. It feels more old-school, more approachable and yet uncompromising, and with a more distinct character. It's just perfect, and I love it so much.
The ND, on the other hand, is rather boring and generic. It doesn't evoke anything. I would never splurge on it. But I would indeed splurge on the cutie that started it all
>>
>>28692126
I'unno man, i agree but also cant ignore the conveniences of the new cars. Easier clutch, better navigation, and modern tech (pro or con depending on your view ig)
>>

they go for 15k € here
>>
>>28692145
Pretty overpriced.
I'm sure that if I wait for the right opportunity, I can pay a fair price.
But I'm still trying to understand what a "fair price" is.
7500€ for a 100.000km NA?
Is more than 9000€ considered overpriced ?
Sorry for the dumb questions

I bought the auto miata, I'm 50/50 on it. Yeah I wish it were manual, but I also couldn't drive a manual anywhere close to as aggressively as I drive the auto, I would literally die from fucking up a shift while swimming on the highway.

>>28691624
The auto is still fun when you shift gears manually, but you still get the feeling that something is missing all the time. I think the gearing is different too which kills some of the acceleration in the high gears.

Be brutally honest , is it a bad idea to buy a NA / NB / NC Miata if I'm working class? Miatas are incredibly cheap to buy, fuel and maintain compared to normal sport cars, but still, they're obviously more demanding than a cheap mass produced city car.
I'm not sure if I'm aiming too far relatively to my means.
Or perhaps, on the other hand, miatas are a perfectly achievable dream for normal people as long as they don't care about muh 5 seats

I'm working class, I got my Fiata for less than a new econobox with almost no mileage, it's my one and only car. Running costs are slightly higher than an econobox, especially fuel economy, but it's not an unsustainable proposition, and for me the mental health boost I get is worth every penny. The thing is that if you're truly working class you won't be able able to afford a more flexible daily driver, so getting a Miata as your only car is more of a lifestyle choice than anything else.

What's cheaper to own and maintain: Miata or 600cc supersport motorcycle?

pic random this is not Myat
>>
>>28703034
I mean motorcycle probably because theres less fluid volume but probably changing them as or more frequently on a bike since they're high strung. Insurance is usually dirt cheap for a bike. But then you also need quality gear. Could run you 2k+. And also you're exposed to the increasing number of retards starting at their IPad center consoles..
I'd say just get a Miata. Parts are cheap, work is easy. And you're somewhat safe especially if you put a roll bar in it.. motorcycles belong on a track
>>
>>28703181
Oh I forgot. You're gonna burn through tires fast as fuck on a bike, 5k mile changes or so. 400+ for a pair if you get good tires, which you should because you really don't want to lose traction.

And make sure you have short and long term disability through your employer because a ""minor"" crash could still put you out of work for a few months.
I've been in operating rooms a bit (ancillary role) and I've seen a good number of people getting put back together after motorcycle crashes. It's not pretty and it's not always the riders fault.

Can you guys help me improve this point-based system that will allow me to judge Miata NA listings more objectively?

Points are calculated mainly based on the cost to rectify faults. No negative points at all would mean that the car is an ideal (impossible) specimen. Costs are one-off or are over the next 10 years. For example, adding a hardtop costs 1000€, so -10 points. Repainting the whole vehicle because it's grey (ugly) costs 2300€, so -23 points. And so on.

Some explanatory notes:

The bigger engine loses some points because it's less fuel efficient. However, this penalty is dampened by the fact that it makes driving more enjoyable.

Units manufactured in the first few years of production had several faulty parts that made the car less reliable.

I don't care about survivability (airbags).

I don't care if the Miata is a special edition.

Improved driving characteristics thanks to aftermarket are appreciated, but the bonus is dampened by a decreased reliability.

Importing from another EU country costs around 1,100€ in paperwork and fees.

About mileage:
Example : If the car has 150k kilometers, it will cost me around 8400 euros in maintenance over the next 10 years. If the previous owner is a very caring one, and has renovated the car completely recently, the penalty is dampened by 38 points. If the owner is mildly caring, and has renovated only important bits recently, the penalty is dampened by 19 points.

They look better in Type S configuration without any of the gaudy NB2 OEM bodykit crap hung on it. The yellow one above is a Type A, and the Type E is so heinous I'm not going to waste time or bandwidth saving an image of it to post here.

Hey guys, I'm thinking of getting of miata and was wondering which generation you think would be best given my circumstances.
>Already have one practical car (vw golf)
>Will be living in an apartment (no garage)
>Expecting very low yearly mileage. Would live very close to work and probably take the golf. Miata would just be for fun.
>Budget is not really that much of a concern

So, I was originally thinking the ND. I like how it looks, and most are unmolested. However, maintenance while living in an apartment seems like a pain in the ass. The oil filter is on the bottom of the car, so I can't just use an oil extractor like I do with my golf for oil changes. From what I gather, the oil filter on the NA miata is accessible from the top. I also like how the NA looks, but with the cars being so old I wonder how high maintenance they will be. I'm aware that they're reliable, but they're decades old now.

Maybe I'll just get an ND and pay someone else to do messy fluid changes. Let me know what you fellas think
>>
>>28707917
NA/NB oil filter is a pain even from the bottom. Maybe a 1.6 will have a smaller intake manifold and you could possibly get your arm in there from the top but that is absolutely not the case for a 1.8. If getting under a car is a concern for you I would not be looking at NA or NB simply due to age. I'd be looking for either a late NC or ND like you say.
>>
>>28707931
Noted, thanks.
>>
>>28707799
I agree. That looks fantastic without the plastic.
>>
>>28707799
I would buy this car. I really like the Miata but I can't do convertibles.

Buy whatever you like the look of; a well kept NA won't be any more maintenence intensive than a well kept ND. All miatas are cheap to own and run, but as always, if you buy a rough example of any car then you'll have a bad time.

>>28707931
Wut? I always replace my 1.8's filter from the top, and while it *is* messy as fuck thanks to it being on the side of the block, I wouldn't say it's difficult at all.
>>
>>28708157
Maybe that's an NA thing then. I don't have gorilla hands and I couldn't begin to try to squeeze the filter out from the top on my NB with either the original VICS intake or the squaretop.
>>

>>
>>28708431
I know but that's all stuff I can't really order ahead of time. Really all I gotta do is get the engine in the car and get the ECU and fuel system on it - drivetrain is fairly straightforward if expensive - and it'll move, then I can spend all summer jerking off over making it nice and clean.

FB marketplace shipped from Flint, Michigan lol

>>28708432
Generally if you go with an aluminum block motor (which I have) people estimate around 250lbs weight gain. However:

>I'm using a Tremec TKX not a T56, so the tranny is about 80lbs lighter
>This expensive aluminum diff also saves 20lbs
>The V8R front subframe saves about 10lbs

So fingers crossed I'm only adding about 150lbs to the car
>>
>>28708445
And my car is an optionless 1991 1.6, so 2140lbs
So hoping to end up around 2300lbs 350whp

New to manual and have a question. Let's say I'm slowing down in second and I clutch in at around 5-8 mph. Then traffic picks back up. What's the right way to smoothly re engage the clutch and revs to resume driving? Do I hold the clutch at the bite point while adding revs back? Do I try to estimate what revs for what speed for that gear and raise them to that level again?
>>
>>28711535
Just catch the bite point and gently feed the clutch, adding throttle as necessary, as you would when pulling away from a stop.
>>
>>28711535
>>28712051
I should add that ideally you want to match your revs to your wheel speed for whatever given gear you're aiming for (rev-matching), but I'm guessing that your car is roughly at idle speed at 5-8mph in 2nd gear, hence why I say start with clutch, not the throttle.
>>
>>28711535
clutch in, get the revs up, clutch out
if this answer sounds unhelpful, its because this is all muscle memory to me kek
>>
>>28711535
I'd give it revs and lift up the clutch slowly. With manual is always about practice.
>>
>>
>>28712051
>>28712053
>>28712074
>>28712078
Thank you all. Basically confirming what I thought but I just have to learn the wheel speed and practice to get it smoothly. All in due time. I'm mostly worried about excessively wearing out the clutch with a bad habit. I come from a bike so there was no concern with a wet clutch and slipping it

I see where you're coming from, and while this is generally good advice, I'm coming from a place of wanting to enjoy life more after years of excess austerity.

Not really trying to write a blogpost. I've been a habitual saver and cheap ass since I had my first job at 17. I was such a cheap fag that I'd get mad if my girlfriend at the time wanted avocado on her burger and I was paying. Had multiple jobs at a time while in college with a max of four jobs at the same time one summer, all while saving probably 80+% of it into index funds.

Obviously you would have no way of knowing this information until I shared it, but the arrogance does piss me off. I've already been responsible for years and have a huge amount saved up, at the expense of missing out on life experiences. So, I don't want to hear it.
>>
>>28713198
Been there. Buy a lightly used ND and just enjoy driving it without dealing with old shitbox problems.
>>
>>28713212
Lightly used ND does sound pretty good. Part of me wants to buy new so that I would be supporting the production of new cool cars instead of crossovers

If you're up for sharing I'm interested in hearing your experience, having said you've been in my situation. You'd say loosening up with finances helped with life enjoyment? I'd guess it did given your recommendation to me, but I am interested in your story, if you have one.
>>
>>28713280
I don't want to share the details, but I've experienced a significant degree of social mobility in my adult life.

As far as I'm concerned, I've dealt with enough stress for one person. I'm tired, and I'll pay whatever I need to to avoid unnecessary problems. I don't mind working on cars, but it's something I prefer to pick up and put down at my own pace, on a vehicle I don't intend to use regularly. So if I was to have just one fun car in my life, I'd want it to just work so I don't end up spending my limited driving time fixing God knows what instead.

That isn't to say the NA is unreliable, they're holding up better than most cars of their era. But they are still classic cars now, and for not much more money than you'd pay for a nice example, you could get an ND and not deal with any age related problems. If you can swing a brand new one, I'm sure Mazda would appreciate the sale too. Maybe consider renting a storage unit to keep it out of the elements though.
