Buying cars from ~1990? Is buying a 30 something year old car typically a bad idea? They're>cheap>
subjectively
good lookingDo they have a hard time keeping highway speeds? Can they handle driving long distances well? How are they safety-wise? What are the drawbacks/should I just stay clear of older vehicles if I want a car that can actually be used for more than just fun cruising?

I have a Nip market 2000 Accord wagon. The alternator (4 pin Denso thing) in it failed recently and overvolted the car bigly with about 20V for a little bit so I presume the voltage regulator let go and then must have taken out the diode pack in the alt as well since it drained the battery within a few hours of it occurring. No big deal, replace the alternator and it should be okay.Replaced the alternator with a refurb'd unit because I can't get an OEM replacement anymore and while it tested fine on the test bench at the workshop, it's triggered the battery light in car which now stays on permanently. Given the age of the car I can only presume that it has a fairly dumb sensing circuit so it shouldn't be a "latched" fault requiring a scan tool to clear it. The alternator itself charges at ~14.4V and has no issue maintaining the battery, so it would appear that it's functional. My question - is the fault likely a spontaneous problem caused by the voltage reg in the back of the new alternator that inconveniently failed somehow between testing and installation in the car? Or do I need to dig deeper in the car's wiring? My understanding is that for the battery light to work but then extinguish when the alternator is outputting >12.7V, there needs to be a diode between the voltage regulator and battery light (which is connected to battery+ through the ignition switch) which can not be reverse biased and will not allow current to flow through the lamp when alt output > battery+ voltage. Has something been fried when the previous alternator regulator failed and overvolted everything in the car?

Best way to get rid of a car that you don't think anyone will buy? It's mid-2000s crossover with a transmission issue.Ideally it wouldn't be just crushed into a cube since it does still work, and I'd like to make some money off of it.

My odometer display changed to a >gASCAPMessage what does it mean. I have a gas cap and its new enough, 2 years old
>>28680461>If the gASCAP message is displayed in the instrumentcluster, this signifies a leak or change in the evaporative system is detected. >>28680550there could still be hot steam in the radiator system but it most likely all leaked out. if you’re concerned, the safest option is to wait a couple hours

>>28679742seat covers, even when properly tailored for your specific model, are never going to be perfect. your best bet would be to find an automotive upholsterer, remove the seats, and take them to have them professionally upholstered. this is pretty common for classic car restorations, there are usually a couple of options in each major metro area. you’re probably looking at about a $1500 job minimum though, which is why seat covers are so common.the other option would be to find a wrecked one at a junkyard and pull the seats from it
>>28680479as an lx body owner dealing with this issue on a newer mopar, it's likely not actually the gascap but one of the evap purge solenoids. luckily both the front and rear solenoids are very cheap and usually easy to replace, they're about $25 each. you can test the solenoids for leaks by pressurizing them with a bike pump and listening for hissing sounds or using soapy water.to correctly clear the gascap message fill your gas tank to 3/4ths then go for a nice drive until the fuel level drops to about half, then let the car sit overnight. the pcm should conduct its leak tests the next day when you start it up and drive it some more, though it may take another key cycle. if it's truly caused by the gascap being loose, you can also pull the battery for 20-30 minutes to reset the warning light, but it will return if the problem isn't solved.if you replace the gascap and both purge solenoids, or verify that they are operating correctly and it still returns, the charcoal canister is done and needs replacing. also, check and replace any rubber hoses.

>>28680587ended up waiting about an hour and there wasnt any fizzy sound when i opened the cap, but i fear this is just because EVERY SINGLE DROP of coolant leaked out somehowIs it worth buying a brand new 200€ radiator for a 2400€ beater or should i just get scarpyard parts for like 50€
>>28680550Pour coolant into the reservoir, not the radiator directly. Also, you should hunt down that leak ASAP, nothing good comes from burning your motor
>>28680610its the rubber on top of the radiator afaik, ive heard from other anons on this board that old rovers tend to start spitting coolant and stuff like that and it checks out for my model
>>28678358> property tax never heard of this for cars in the US, do you mean registration? if so, yes> sales tax yes, its usually a component of the lease terms, but it doesn’t get charged at point of sale necessarily. lets do some math: if there are no fees, you’re putting $0 down, if your car is $40k, and your residual is $25k, and your sales tax is 5%, and you’re leasing for 3 years, youd pay roughly the following:15k delta / 36 months = $417 per month15k delta * 0.05 / 36 = $21 per month or $750 total> how much downymmv. some offers require 0 down, others require much more. more down = lower monthly payment. in the above example, putting $5k down lowers your delta to $10k, which lowers your monthly, but doesn’t change your sales tax
>>28680607idk your finances but if its only a $200 part i would just go new. if you go to the junkyard you will probably get one full of old gunked up antifreeze, and likely will have to pull it yourself then flush all the crap out. not doing that is probably worth the $150if the new part gets to like $500, then the junkyard gets much more attractive as an optionkeep in mind that old hoses are very likely to crumble as well, so you might end up needing much more than just the radiator
>>28680605the 7.3s are fucking boat anchors. itll run forever sure, but theyre not fast and theyre pigs on gas. 7.3s are firmly in “I KNOW WHAT I GOT” territory, especially the excursionthe weak points of the dodge/cummins are the transmission and body rust. one is more replacable than the other. if you find a clean one, you can take preventative measures for rust, and the trans can always be replaced.cant really comment on newer diesels unfortunately.price wise theyre probably a toss up. the ford will be more expensive up front, the dodge will be more expensive to maintain.

I have a 2001 PT Cruiser that has a slight odor of engine coolant leaking into the passenger compartment. Relevant points:* the floor is NOT wet, which is usually what happens when the "heater core" develops a leak* a mechanic's shop pressure-tested the coolant system and couldn't find a leak anywhere* the mechanic's shop also couldn't find any dripping anywhere* the coolant level HAS NOT DROPPED noticeably at all in over a year of this* when I turn the heat on, there is not only no increase in odor, the odor also seems to go away completely (just found this out yesterday)The mechanic says it has to be the heater core even though the passenger-side floor would normally be soaked if that was going out. Also, I find it really weird that turning on the heat and cranking the fan up would stop the odor from leaking into the passenger compartment.Any thoughts? Can it be anything OTHER THAN the heater core? The hoses all seem to be fine. The mechanic is an honest one and a pretty decent guy all around. I get the impression that he really doesn't want to do the work on the car because fixing a heater core is apparently a real pain in the ass on this car. I don't necessarily doubt him, but I don't see how the odor wouldn't increase when I turn the heat on if it's the heater core that is causing the problem. Hoping it's something else so I can get it fixed by him.

>>28681073>i've had heater cores just barely seep a tiny bit, enough that you could smell it, but not enough to create a puddle.Much appreciated for the information.Well drat. I kinda want to replace it now because parts are already hard to get, and getting scrap out of a junkyard for something like this makes it almost likely that the replacement will have problems too.Apparently they have to rip apart the whole dashboard just to get at the heater core to see if that's the problem, which I guess is why the guy really doesn't want to bother with it.

Hey guys, I recently bought my first used car. Its a Mazda 6 2003 Sedan, looks pretty decent and I don't ask too much for my first car. I am, conviniently, also new to the world of cars basicallyThis is a specific question: my manual says to fill the fuel with 95 octane, but looking at the engine (2.3L engine) and a quick google search led to answer that 91 Octane is fine, which in my opinion saves money. What do you think guys? If you were me, which fuel should I go for? Thanks
I have to change the camshaft synchronizer on my B3000 and have yet to dig into it. I know the gear that spins the inner part has to be lined up with the cam gear for correct timing, but does the direction of the outer housing matter? Also, in one video I saw, he mentioned something about the oil pump has a possibility to get knocked out of line with the cam synchronizer (it also drives the oil pump) and cause a no oil pressure issue. What causes this and what should I avoid to not do this?
>>28681736Go with what the manual says. If you feel like it later you can experiment but I'd say better safe than sorry at first.
>>28681393>>28681396yeah that would be cake to weld. if you're a MIGlet, I would take it to a small welding shop over a suspension shop, or if you can't find one an exhaust shop will have the most experienced welders. should be around $100 to make that stronger than new.
>>28681710i don't know anything about this specific car, but assuming it has a digital odometer, usually there is a chip in the cluster you have to desolder and connect to an EPROM programming cable to flash the new value into. check enthusiast boards for the car, somebody has swapped a cluster before and needed to match the mileage
>>28681736there are two methods of calculating octane, the manual is likely using the european/asian style where 95 is roughly equivalent to 90 in the us style. 91 is fine, or if you want to save money you could 50/50 87 and 93 octane and get close enough.
I feel like I'm committing a car sin but not sure where to ask. I know this is fairly stupid but I want to know how stupid this actually is. However, I'm still in the "training and probation" till February...Looking at picrel, underbody isn't rusted out. Drives... fine... Dealer is willing to do 1500 for tax/tags out the door. The only thing I need to do is go to the grocery store here and there and run into the office. I have a good e-bike for summer time that can get me around town super quick.
>>28681964I bought it with the leveling kit. Yeah, I could have removed it but it would cost a bunch that I didn't want to spend. The rear sags anyways at 100k miles when loaded, so my question is still valid leveling kit or not
>>28681955If you really are only driving 10 miles to work, this'll be fine. If you're not accustomed to Fargo winters - shit gets insane but their plowing is some of the best in the county (just behind MN, imo). Throw some winter tires on it and it'll be fine. Blizzacks or Nitto SN's are awesome
>>28682015Yeah 100% replacing the tires, I live "downtown" which has a bus service to near my work but in winter that sounds hellish. I am looking to buy a proper car later on but since I just moved and recovering a bit from all those fee's, I'd rather not drop something insane before I fully understand the seasons here. ~1800 (after tires) and 30/mo for insurance seems worth it even if it only lasts me a year and some change.
>>28682013Idk exactly what truck that is but no, leaf springs should not wear out at 100k. If its some half ton shitter those arent built to haul any kind of actual weight so its just expected. If its a real truck idk what to tell you, ask for your money back LOL
>>28681914>you have to desolder and connect to an EPROMGuess I'll just be 100k off
>>28681997>What is a snow tireAll that AWD and 4x4 will still leave you crawling in traffic regardless
