I've always wanted a BSA, but don't want to spend the money or deal with the pain of having an old bri'ish motorbike.
Would it be cringe to just get a W800 and put a BSA badge on the side where the W goes? The model spawned from a licensed copy of a BSA A7, still a 360° P-Twin, and there's a used 2020 near me for $2800.

>Would it be cringe to just get a W800 and put a BSA badge on the side where the W goes?
On one hand, I would say yes. There's probably some pride in ownership that comes with keeping something like an old BSA alive. On the other hand... It would be pretty funny, and only people with a keen eye would even notice. The only question is, do you explain that it's actually not a BSA when people ask, or do you go all the way with the lie? >:)
>>
>>28679948
Go up 2-4 teeth on the back sprocket.
>>
>>28680134
>do you explain that it's actually not a BSA when people ask,
Of course. Not going to try and fake it. I'll however explain I simply did it because it's basically a modern BSA (I'm not counting those poo made monstrosities).
The W800 is genuinely the path BSA would've gone down if they were interested in making a heritage bike that harkened back to their roots.
>>
>>28680162
Putting fake high end badges on shitbikes is gay.
Debadging a high end goodbike is hetero.
>>
>>28680131
>The bike itself is fine
I guess. I don't really have too much of a use for it outside of making it something that's fun looking. I'm selling one of my bikes to a friend, and I just need to fill that soon-to-be empty slot in the garage.
>>
>>28680162
>Of course. Not going to try and fake it. I'll however explain
You might get tired of explaining, not that it's a big deal. No need to explain to me.

Anyone undercoating their bikes rn? I know once that first fall comes they'll cost the roads even though there are definitely some nice riding days/Indian summers coming.

125cc is not a decent scooter, its speed gets you mowed at autobahn day two of riding. 400cc is fine but it's already more expensive than NC750X for example. No need to check 650 with that. Honestly don't know what you wanted to say but you just proved my point...

Good for you, but in here everything over 125cc requires a motorcycle license that costs 3x the minimum wage in vietnam where you live in addition to the enormous scooter price. Basically the government and manufacturers made it economically not viable to ride scoots. Italians still somehow do as I visited but I'm not sure the term "economical viability" is known to them so...

Which mid-size ADV is the best for actual overlanding?
Finally going to have some time this upcoming spring to do some cool trips. Plan on doing the The Alpine Loop in Colorado, and the Owhyee Canyonlands in Oregon. I need to get a new bike to do it, and I'm in-between 4 right now, the only ones I've ridden.
>Tenny 700
Didn't really like it, but I'd be wrong to leave it out. If it's truly the best for the job, I'd get a used one.
>V-Strom 650
A bunch of used ones for cheap with low mileage in my area. A bit underpowered, but the amount of them around make them tempting. Liked the comfort and simplicity of them.
>Transalp
By far my favorite, however, I've heard it struggles for real off-road use. It's also going to have be bought new considering there are rarely any used ones with the current XL750 model being only a few years old.
>Ibex 450
Actually shocked how good it felt at a CFMoto demo day. Kind of out of the "mid-size" specification with this one, but I've also heard it's still capable enough and the lighter weight is better off-road. Just don't think I trust something in the middle of nowhere made in the middle kingdom.

So which should I get?

Because I live over a 1000 miles from these places. If I was closer, I'd probably get a DRZ-4S or Sherpa 230 for the job, as I liked both, but I couldn't do the highway miles on them to get there.
>>28680271
>checkout the 800 as well. 800 is more offroady than transalp.
I did check out the 800 at the same Suzuki Demo day I tried out the 650 and DRZ-4S at. Similar story to the Transalp where it's so new I'd have to get it new. However, there aren't a bunch of holdovers in my area like with the Transalp, and I'd be paying way more than I want for it (over $10k OTD).
>>28680278
I was hesitant to put the Ibex on there because it was Chinese, but it shocked me at a demo day. However, I'd definitely not trust my life to an Indian bike. My friend had a 2018 Himalayan, and RE didn't put it in probably sized piston rings so it burned oil with under 3k on the ODO. Supposedly that's fixed, not good for their reputation, though. Even just looking at the specs, it weighs on par with all the bikes that have over 300cc on it in displacement. It'd also be a dog on a highway. No thanks, not interested.
>>
>>28680162
>modern BSA
As a jeet, the bantam 350 or whatever is absolute garbage with chink engine, do not buy. 650 has a rotax single, could be decent, still they are not a real motorcycle brand in India, they can't even sell any in India and the ones that they do, they have horrible service network, no parts available and terrible experience overall.

>GS1200
I've tried the GS1250 and 1300, I've also tried out the Africa Twin, Pan America, Tiger 1200, and Super Tenere. All excellent motorcycles. Large ADVs certainly have their place, but I just wouldn't want to pick one of them up if I dropped it in a rut. They also all come in a little high for my budget, even used.
>>28680426
I understand ADVs are compromises, but as someone who has to ride whatever I get a long was on pavement to get to the dirt, it's a compromise I'm willing to make. The locations I plan to do are going to be 90% not too ridiculous dirt roads and flat smooth land anyway.

You must be Indian or a bot. They must be the bee's fucking knee's in Pooville but in the west they're considered very unreliable. In shit-country it probably looks pretty good next to other indian bikes or knockoffs but they dont stack up well in the USA, for example.

It's a shame because i actually think they're extremely handsome bikes aesthetically. People say they've improved the last couple of years with the Him 450 but i also think people are heavily influenced the aforementioned looks of the bike.

Chink bikes are the ones that have legit gotten better. CFmoto and stuff like kove seem to stackl up pretty well.

Yamaha R1 still holds the record on Nürburgring since 2012. Motorcycle ban for tourists was introduced in 2025. For 13 years no other machine could beat the record in tourist rides and since start 2025 no other motorcycle is being able to do that during private rides in this track. There is a huge shortage of technicians for machine tools. If you want formal education, go for a mechatronics degree or certifications.

I started my career in the Army as a helicopter mechanic and transitioned to field service for machine tools after my service.

Most companies will train you on the job if you have an electrical or mechanical aptitude.

I spent five years as a technician, gradually taking Siemens classes on control systems, and now I am a controls engineer.

There is a plethora of knowledge on youtube. Search for CNC Repairman. He has a good channel to cut your teeth on the industry.

As for the picture I posted, you're looking at a multi axis horizonal milling machine that primarily makes aerospace parts out of aluminum alloys.

The picture is actually rotated 90 degress in the wrong orientation, my apologies.

Good luck young man.

yeah I figured I'd just drain it first, its been sitting for years according to the seller so it will need to be completely gone over anyway

Going to chase the bike shop about my 50cc Aprilia. If it is going to take forever they can just stick the tires on and I will try to work out the other problems. I just need a stand for it. But if they can do it easily I would rather they did as bound to be a better job.

Genuinely I think it's because Motorbike statistics were driving the Chinese accident rates really, really high. And the great thing about socialist societies is you don't get a choice on if you can do something dangerous just for the nature of doing it. You're going to be babied by the nanny state whether you like it or not.

For more information on how people can tolerate living that way, see the United Kingdom

There's plenty of drug laws in the US and every other country that are not considered socialist, yet the government babies you whether you like it or not.

If you're actually considering buying a used helmet then don't, even if it wasn't "expired" you have absolutely no idea whether it has been dropped. Also it's gross.

There is no way Yamaha isn't updating or replacing the R1 soon. The R1 and MT-10 are the last hold outs in their line up.

Is it over 7 years old? Manufacture date is on a tag inside of all helmets.

helmet expiration is a bit of a myth, the 5 year lifespan is something snell came up with based on motocop helmets. Over the course of 5 years, the comfort liner inside the helmet wore down and didn't fit snugly anymore, so snell deemed them unsafe to use past that point.
EPS liner (the hard foam that actually protects your head) doesn't have any noticeable deterioration in that time frame. The only study done on it was with bicycle helmets (same tech, eps liner with a plastic shell) and it showed very minimal degradation on helmets over 20 years old. like less than 1% per year.
the sena alone still sells for like $100+ on ebay.

only if you refrigerate it any time you're not wearing it. If it sits in the sun even once in a while you should discard it after 5 yrs tops.

>Unused helmets stored in good condition do not automatically expire after five years. Replacing helmets every five years is a judgement call based on testing helmets used by the California Highway Patrol by Dr. George Snively.
>The research that Snell’s five-year maxim is based upon is established through two studies conducted by Dr. Snively in the late 1970s, there isn’t much data, only hunches. In his responses to queries, Becker often reports that these studies were “never written up or published.”
>The first of these oft-cited unpublished studies was conducted with used helmets donated by officers retiring from the California Highway Patrol (CHP), and the other was an experiment which Dr. Snively conducted by leaving a bunch of brand-new helmets on a garage roof in the Sierras to expose them to the elements over several years. Evaluations of these helmets are what Snell’s five-year replacement advisory are based upon today.
> Dr. Snively “found that some as old as 12 years tested as if they had just rolled out of production, while others of the same vintage failed miserably.”
>Meanwhile, the rooftop helmets “continued to perform like new, even after several seasons of the elements,” Becker said, leading Dr. Snively to conclude “that it was wear and tear, and not time or exposure to weather that took helmets down.”

tl;dr: It's complete bullshit that helmet manufacturers push because they have every reason to get you to throw away your $800 helmet to go buy another $800 helmet every 3-5 years.

Enduro and off road brahs

What does the shape of the gas tank have to do with handling off road? I am building up a CRF250L engine swap with a CB500x but I want to install a bigger tank. Are scramblers and ADV bikes with big road style tanks gimped when it comes to semi technical riding?

Should I be sensible and get
>12L / 3gallon acerbis/IMS tank, shaped like a classic enduro tank
or follow my heart and rat out the bike with
>steel tank in the coolest shape I can find salvage

also another myth is dropping your helmet will destroy the liner and render the helmet unusable.
dropping your helmet with nothing inside does nothing unless you're literally spiking it like a football. A 3 foot drop off your bike or a table will do literally nothing. At the absolute worst if it's onto rough pavement you might scratch the paint a little bit.

Helmetchads, my head is very large (63cm) compared to my frame and my cheapie helmet makes me look like a lego astronaut and Darth Helmet.

To look cool, are you familiar with the concept?

Some helmets are hilariously big for the same safety rating (ECE 22.06) and most models seem to have gone up in size a bit since that new cert rolled in

>ADV for heavy off-road use
Then pick none of these bikes and go for a KTM 690/HQV 701, it will run great for heavy offroad use, but also rips on the asphalt considering you are doing a very long trip, so you most definitely will do a good chunk of highway, and for being a dual sport, that one does pretty well, just be careful with the trucks shaking you off a bit when they go past ya.
>Why not a 390 Adventure then?
Even if they improved the 390 ADV with the R model by quite a bit, it is still lacking on the low rpm end, so mods will be needed in order to keep it smooth for offroad, besides a good bashplate and needing the kickstand switch bypass, which takes a while to be shipped, good luck getting one of those in your country lol.

Himmy 450 would be a decent pick, but also its nearly the same as the 450 IBEX, besides needing better tires since the ones from CEAT are total dogshit. Also the 450s had also problems too, in Mexico there was a big recall that the owners demanded due of engine problems afaik too.

If you are STILL keen on picking one of these, if you really can't get into the T7, then just go for the V-Strom and put some good tires on it, those things are fucking golden desu, just a bit lacking on the tech plus somewhat heavy, but almost the same can be said for all the jap ones here, 450 IBEX shuts the offroad mode off when it stalls btw, seems only KTM can do it right so far.

To tell you the truth nobody else notices that you look like a peewee football player. Like go to cycle gear and try on a few helmets, but no matter what you'll feel self conscious about it.
>>
>>28681437
>Also the 450s had also problems too
450MT/Ibex are the ones who had that problem, as for Himmy 450, haven't seen issues on them yet.
>>
>>28681425
No one cares. They won't even see you on the road, let alone notice your head look half an inch bigger than other riders
