I hate Suzuki so fucking much it's unreal. Imagine the BIKE of all bikes.

You remove all the plastic and it looks like Ducati Monster, you put a cowl on and it's cafe-racer, or Katana. You put some fairings on and now it looks like RC51, you put another plastic on and you have a 900GP looking bike, or a supersport, or Chinese AI sloppa bike.
It could've been everything but it's just a dead naked.

It is a Lego bike and has been for over 2, almost 3, decades now. I hate Suzuki for killing it on favor of the GSX8, however, I'm not a Suzuki boy but the GSX8T is retro done right

I got a question. How can a filer-less engine like mine last so long? Everyone always says metal in oil of any size is bad but when I check the oil I can see visible tiny aluminum specks when I shine a light to the dipstick. Yet the cylinders can still last about 20,000 miles cruising at 6k rpm. Do they just use lower tolerances during machining?
>>
>>28699732

>>
>>28699734
Thanks for the (You).
>>
>>28699732
Aluminum is so soft it doesn't catastrophically explode unless put to the limit, instead it consumes more and more oil until it's unreasonable to keep running. Sometimes, aluminum is so soft, components wear together long enough where it was previously burning oil could be rectified by long-term religious maintenance
>>
>>28699736
>long-term religious maintenance
That's what everyone says to do with these engines lol. Every 800 to 1k miles is the interval. You are the filter so to speak. Thanks.
>>
>>28699748
An oil filter would've cost the company $5 more, but instead they want you to buy a new scooter.

Who is responsible for an accident by law in your country/state in case when motorcycle rides over the speed limit and car turns without seeing it?
>>
>>28699987
In case court sees it as established that the driver went over the speed limit (due to police reports, witnesses, evidence and/or expert analysis), the car driver goes scot free, as he should.
Any speed limit, even the default ones, are choices made with any traffic scenario in mind; lane switching, breaking, accelerating... and TURNING vehicles.

If the rider went over the speed limit, he will be 100% at fault for the crash and his insurance will pay the car driver in full. As it should be, because fuck any driver who thinks they're to cool for speed limits and ends up crashing into other people.
>>
>>28700007
I think it's interesting because I was born in a county where it's completely opposite and now I live in a country where both drivers would be in fault. The reasoning is like that - a driver before executing the turn must make sure it's safe to do so no matter if someone goes fast, if there's an emergency vehicle going on red light or an aircraft landing on that lane. So the car drivers would always lose the court. Which does not help motorcycle riders a lot, since their bodies are getting destroyed anyways.

just drove through the mountains in my old commute route from a shitjob i had a few years back
My findings as a newbie biker
>thin waterproof pants are not windproof or coldproof, better wear thick ass cotton, denim, or leather pants underneath if you dont want to freeze your balls off
>make sure to wear tall shoes and pants that cover your entire legs or else you will lose tons of heat in the gap between your shoes and your pants
>neck gaiters are a must to protect your neck from the winds, and your nose and mouth from any cold wind getting into your helmet
>if neck gaiters are too thick you're gonna pull them down when you put your helmet on and it will be a pain in the ass to pull back up
>earplugs are nice to avoid wind noise in shitty helmets but you gotta be careful not to remove them when putting your helmet on which can be a pain in the ass
i may just buy a balaclava or something similar thats thin but warms up most of my head and is not pulled down whenever i put my helmet on

It's OK to not be the best at tools, but take your time thinking it all out as you're executing the task.

If you would like to save some cash, try getting a long nosed vice grip/channel lock to sneak into that crevice. Alternatively you could try fitting a US standard wrench that is slightly undersized of the nut to get a firm grasp on the slightly rounded edges.

What's actually the difference between ECE 22.05 and ECE 22.06?
I got my dad a Shark Modular Helmet on clearance, new in box, only 3 years old (manufactured 2022) for $73. He was excited, but he noticed it was only ECE 22.05 and he sort of wished it was the new standard. Still enjoying it and has been wearing it on all our rides and when he goes to work on his bike because it's really versatile (he also doesn't have any other helmets). I just wondered if it really even mattered. My helmet is only ECE 22.05 and it kept my noggin joggin after a 20mph moped crash 6 or so years ago I went out and got another one of the same model, my current helmet, and I intend to get that same model again when new colors for 2026 come out.

Should I not have gotten my dad that helmet? Should I be looking for something with the New safety rating for myself?
>>
>>28700270
You are supposed to do that. Just like you you adjust seat before driving, you are supposed to adjust your biku for comfort.

>>
>>28700315
No, 22.05 is fine. But next time buy helmet like battery or tyres, as close to date of manufacture as possible. Helmets expire in 5 years from date of manufacture.

Difference between 22.05 and 22.06 is rotational protection, so they made helmets rounder. If your helmet is round like an egg, it will pass 22.06.
>>
>>28700315
[AI Overview]
The main difference is that ECE 22.06 is a much more stringent standard for motorcycle helmets due to its more varied and realistic testing methods. Key upgrades include multiple impact tests at different speeds and angles, rotational force tests, and testing of all accessories like visors and intercoms. In contrast, ECE 22.05 focused on fewer, less severe tests, such as basic shock absorption and impact resistance.

ECE 22.06 key features
>More impact tests: Helmets are tested for impacts at various speeds and angles, not just at specific points.
>Rotational force tests: New tests are included to measure and reduce the rotational forces that can cause rotational acceleration of the head.
>Accessory testing: All accessories, like sun visors and intercom systems, must be tested and approved as part of the helmet's safety certification.
>More realistic scenarios: The testing is designed to simulate a wider range of real-world accidents more accurately than the previous standard.
ECE 22.05 key features
>Fewer testing locations: Focused on specific, limited areas of the helmet.
>Less severe impact tests: The impact tests were less rigorous than those required by 22.06.
>No accessory testing: Accessories were not part of the safety certification process.
>Basic protection focus: Primarily tested for shock absorption, strength, and wear resistance.

=====================

In the real world it doesn't matter so much if you don't crash. tell your dad to simply not crash.
>>
>>28700326
>Helmets expire in 5 years from date of manufacture
only due to deterioration when exposed to the elements and specifically UV light, but if a helmet is sitting in a box for 200 years it will still be usable.

Pretty sure it's 7 years. I don't know if helmet manufacturers are shortening their recommendations to sell more helmets, but I know when I got into riding 10 years ago, that's what other riders, guys at gear shops, and a Bell Rep at a Honda demo event all told me.

It's not about the country that something is made in as much as the country that is managing its manufacture.
Triumph, Honda, Suzuki, Harley-Davidson, Kawasaki, etc. all make bikes in Thailand and they're all good because they're being managed by those nations to produce a good product.
There's a difference between a Triumph Scrambler 400X (British bike made in India) and any Royal Enfield made in India (Indian bike made in India).
If a real company that's based in a 1st world nation that actually knows what QC is, than it will be fine.

ok so i talked to this guy a bit more about the bike and he says it's been sitting a while.

it starts so the battery is fine i guess but i'll still need to change the fluids and filters and tires. and a new spark arrestor for the exhaust is like 200$.

do you think it's reasonable to ask him if he'll take $2900 cash for it? and then expect him to go up to like $3250 or something? i feel like that's almost an insulting offer but it is going to take some money and work to get it road-ready again.

if you think that's fine i'll shoot him an offer. this is my first bike.
>>
>>28701071
455 miles is basically brand new. That said, if all the fluids are original, then you'll want to replace all of them. Check the brake fluid reservoirs if you can, good chance they might be gunked up, but might be ok if it lived in a garage all its life. Tires could be no good too. If it has old gas in it, it is probably pretty nasty, maybe tank is crusty. Original battery might not last long either. I would probably offer $2500 if you want to put the work in to it.

A scooter mechanic told me those frames like to flex a lot at higher speed. I never confirmed it though so be careful if you get it.

Floats maybe

Just to be clear, I mean float height, and some old carb floats get cracks/holes that mean the floats fill with fuel and don't "float".
>also that medium-sized jet to the fr right seems to serve no purpose
Everything in a carb serves a purpose. Make sure the jets are original, correct sizes, and haven't been drilled out.

>bro you got (old bike)?
>cause you like it?
>bro it's so slow and it has no LCD and no abs and no diagnostic tools it's LITERALLY UNRIDEABLE
completely agree with you, most "riders" are bench racing queers.

Guess that's the right call. It would feel like shit making a mistake with it.

I'm gonna have to wait until spring to get a license anyway. We only get about 4, maybe 5 months of nice riding weather over here. Also gotta figure out winter storage for it. Sucks living in an apartment but it feels like a waste to move into some place that I'd be paying hundreds more per month just to have a place for the bike.

>That thing is a hoot and you can easily sell it for $7000-10K depending on where you look.
It's hard figuring out the value of this thing. Apparently it's a rare one and it somewhat depends on what kind of offer or estimate we might get for it locally. Dad might have considered selling it at one point for 3-4k but couldn't find a buyer or something like that. It's a bit unclear how serious he was about it. My uncle said it could be worth 7k. It's also a consideration for me. If it gets valued too high it will eat more into the money portion of my slice of the inheritance at which point I might have to skip it.

>Your father would be proud to see you on it.
That's a part of it and I want to preserve it. Dad loved that bike. Last couple years he wasn't in a condition to ride anymore and it's clear he missed it. Feels like this is an opportunity for me to share this with him even if he's no longer around.

Get a beater off facebook marketplace or the list of craig and learn to ride on that for a few years, building up your bike muscles for the Triumph. Take it for a few spins and never leave it outdoors, that's for your beater bike. When you're ready, ditch the beater bike ($4K DUAL SPORT I KNOW WHAT I HAVE etc.) and make the jump to the triumph.

Had a chance to get a genuine tapestry of that one, but of course the marketplace seller changed his mind half way through the deal.

oof.
Sorry to hear that anon. Marketplace sellers and buyers are assholes like that. I had one change his mind THE DAY OF THE SALE like I'm supposed to re-arrange my whole day to wait on him.

What is that? An Electra Glide J-drama?

When I think Japanese Motorcycle Show I usually think Kamen Rider and all of their kitbashed TW-200s and Serows.

So my boyfriend started riding this season and asksed me if I want to join on a second bike. And I kinda do so I'm attending driving school at the moment. I can only get a 48HP bike as a newb. What bikes are suitable for a big city and mountain rides like once-twice a month with this performance that are also easy to ride, are for short people and not that heavy? Price is also important for a first one.

GS500, but only if you're a real girl
>>
>>28701451
Anything 150-300cc dual sport would fit your checklist.
it sounds like you're not in America so Yamaha's XT250 is out but it fits all of your criteria.

CRF300 made by Honda, especially the rally version, would be a good fit. The height may be uncomfortable at first but you can ask your boyfriend to lower it, and he can do that for you. It's like a 30 minute wrench job.

I noticed you didn't mention speed, Honda makes several 125cc models of bike and scooter that would fit all of your points if you're fine not being the fastest rider.

It actually is incredible how perfectly the GS500 fits that criteria.
You don't have to worry about dropping it too much either, just a matter of scratched sidecover and bent levers. Still fully operational.
>>
>>28701454
Or just go for broke and get a GS500, what could go wrong?
>>
>>28701451
CB300R, CB500R, Duke 390, Duke 250, BMW G310, Royal Enfield 350. As this is your first bike, make sure it has ABS. Anything from the last few years should have ABS.

Ahem, the GS500 will be more comfortable on the highway than any of those.

Anything that could go wrong could be solved for like $500 max. Including an engine transplant.

That's not very nice anon. "Automatic Bitch Savers" are a meme.
