I am looking to see if you guys have recommendations and/or insight.

I want a motorbike from the 1960s or 1970s in the. I have been looking at Norton, Triumph, BSA, Zundapp, NSU, Moto Guzzi and MV Agusta. Not interested in Jap bikes at all and I do not care about your Suzuki Ninja or Honda R1, regardless of how fast it goes or how big the engine is or whatever, this motorbike is for fun strictly.

I have no budget, really.

Currently I fancy a Zundapp KS125, but I also like a lot of the BSA and Norton motorbikes. BSA might be the most sensible since my father worked at the factory in the early 1960s.

Got a full toolbox pretty much everything needed to work on small engines, but nothing quite this big (mostly RC engines both gas and nitro largest I ran was gas 75CC in a competition airplane, which I sold a while back). Worked on both 2 strokes and 4 strokes and even rebuilt several engines.

Not elitist, just do not care much for them out of personal preference. Not bad bikes in general, but not interested in any of them either.

Especially the 5 speed trannies, theyre overengineered apparently bulletproofed super tranny

Dont tell anyone but i have one, zx14r, with a rin keychain attached
I thibk the main problem outside of harley as a restomod will be any parts availability
As mucj as you hate japanese, older goldwing/silverwing might be better choice since they have hydraulic valve lifters and stufd thats cool like cruise control ans boomer wood paintjobs

Anyone falling out of love with bikes? I'm struggling to enjoy myself out there because of shitty traffic, bad drivers and cops trying to nail me all the time. Its hard to extract joy out of it, especially in summer here when its disgustingly hot all the time. By the time you get thru the traffic to the good roads, cops camp out there waiting to confiscate your licence. Plus there's that pervasive fear of dying or becoming a cripple due to retards merging into me or taking me out, hitting oil slicks or clibbins etc. Thinking of hanging up my leathers for awhile idk.
>>
>>28856542
>Goldwing
You know, that's a thought. When I was thinking of Jap bikes I was thinking of Monkeys and CBs/CLs. Nothing against any of them, I just am not a big fan of the styling.

Same goes for anything that Suzuki made in the 1970s, just reminds me too much of SEA and certain parts of Africa.

That's the hard part, it's a gamble what VERO wants you to pay as tribute.
The general rule is that they want was it like 30% of the vehicles value and (((((they))))) get to determine what it's worth.
So that zx14r might be a 50k bike in their opinion, pay up goy.
This can work the other way too as I was prepared for them to tax my Ural as a 1500 buck bike, it's an import anyway, only for them to value it for basically scrap value, about 130 bucks and the import tax was like 30 bucks.

So my Goldwing has decided out of the blue that it will no longer leak coolant. Not sure why, I did put some more in it. Maybe when it was low it needed to pump the coolant loop pressure super high to do the same amount of work.

I bought my current bike (CBR 954RR) at auction about a year ago with ~13500 mi. I think the bike has a vacuum leak but what else should I check for potential causes?

Carb balancing/clean.

Also, don't go by listen mileage, look for real-world posts on applicable forums.

Nah bro I rode the shit out of it and it was fine, stable temperature all the way. Coolant still in it when I stopped. I have no idea why it dribbled out some coolant in the first place and why it's fine now. Barely any ever came out and keep in mind this is a big cooling system with two radiators.

So nfi what the go is. The leak was in the top of the overflow reservoir. I think perhaps because I hadn't changed the coolant in a while it was getting real hot and making its way to the extra reservoir. Hard to know.

Btw as much as I love my Goldwing, unless you can afford a brand new one and it's expensive maintenance, imo don't do it. They're too fucking complicated and everything is buried deep.

There's 3 classes of bikes here, technically 4, but only coping retards give a shit about A2.
There's M which is mopeds, 50cc and was it 3.5hp max, 50kmh top speed. Anything beyond that is an A1 which is up to 125cc and 15hp. Above that is "full A" which is basically unlimited and you can do whatever the fuck you want with them.

If you modify your 50cc moped to go 60kmh, it legally becomes an A1 and cops will fuck your parents if you get caught, plus you lose your plates.
125cc bikes are a bit easier as while they are limited to 125cc and 15hp max, cops only really care about the displacement and even then they're not going to bust open the cylinder head to measure bore and whatnot, they can't measure the power anyway and top speed is technically unlimited on a 125cc.
Anything above that is a real bike and they're all the same. You again technically aren't allowed to drop in a hayabusa engine into a gs500, but no one really gives a shit at that point unless you're dumb enough to go to the inspection office and announce that you've engine swapped your bike.
Again, we have no vehicle inspections for bikes, so no one is going to be none the wiser anyway.
Bike insurances are like whatever over here anyway. Road insurance is like 200 bucks per year and full comprehensive whatever is whatever.
On my Triumph it was like uhhh 1500€ per year, but on the upside you don't keep your bike on the road 12 months here anyway so you only pay like half of that.
Plus you get bonuses for being a good goy from your insurance which will lower your rates up to like 80% or some shit like that.
There's no road tax for bikes here, only insurance.
>>
>>28857102
>>28857140
Also bikes don't get fined by cameras whatsoever because they have no front plates, there's no rear firing cameras in Finland due to legal reasons.
For a camera fine to be legal, the cops need to be able to prove the identity of the driver. A helmet kinda fucks that up now doesn't it?
An easy to way to get out of camera tickets is to just wear a facemask, corona masks caused seething in the cops because their camera pics weren't legally eligible anymore and they couldn't rip people off with their bullshit anymore. Just a bandana is enough and when they ask you for questioning "I've got no idea who that is and it's your job to figure it out".
Even if for example your mate borrows your car and hits a speed camera, you just go "no idea who that is, never seen the guy".

Flush your coolant system / check the thermostat.

Chances are you have gunk in the line which causes pressure to develop in the system, forcing weepage/a leak.

Alternatively the thermostat could've gotten hung up and stick which could also pressurize the system.

If you added water to your coolant ever / previous owners did. Then there will be debris in the line somewhere. Flush it like crazy.

Hello anon, I know a bit about those baba blades.

I want you to first check the fuel pressure regulator. The diaphragm inside of the FPR tends to get cooked by Heat Soak (Hondas run a little hotter than the other brands intentionally)

Prop your tank up or remove it, look down to spot the FPR, then there's a single vacuum line being fed into it. Put a rag underneath it and pop off the single vacuum line and prime your fuel pump (do NOT start the engine, just wirrrr the fuel pump up)

If it drips fuel or more extreme cases dumps fuel, then there's your problem. You'll get better mpg with a fresh one and won't have mid range bogging in the powerband.

Next check your spark plugs and make sure they're proper spec / gap / not fowled / torqued in to spec.
If those are good, you can check 1 more system. The HTEV and Servo Flapper.

Sometimes they get rattled out of adjustment and a simple tuning with a screw driver/twisting the adjustment knobs under the left side of the frame can go a long way. The HTEV in the exhaust in particular can go out and generate a rattling sound that mimicks a bad Cam Chain Tensioner.

These flappers generate backpressure which gives the blade more low-mid torque. If they're out of spec the ecu will run a little rich because the computer senses more air due to a more open Flapper.

Fpr ---> spark plugs ---> Flapper in exhaust ---> Flapper in the intake/airbox

Coolant technically doesn't "go bad", have you ever tried pressure testing the system?
Might simply be a case of being overfilled for the bikes liking, coolant does expand when hot.
>>
>>28857380
Coolant can go bad if filled with undistilled water ever during the lifespan of the bike. Now, if OP bought the bike originally and only ever filled proper fluids in it then yeah you're right however if PO's put a little water to "top it off" then that'd introduce contaminates.

Because they're not selling a motorcycle they're selling a brand. Brand has to have a certain look, not performance.

You want a long range heavy touring motorcycle? If you're not buying a brand, how likely are you to buy a fully fared harley(whatever they call them, roadglide, isn't it?) of BMW K1600 or Goldwing.
There's very few things Harley will do better than either the BMW or Honda and one of them is being a brand. Now BMW obviously has a certain brand appeal but it's appealing to completely different group.
Had they tried to make a motorcycle that is good simply because it's good then they'd get the Pan American situation everywhere. Lots of R&D put into arguably good product, but most of the people interested in this kind of thing AND able to afford it will just get most likely a GS - we both know it's true.

Bros, I'm totally stuck. I have a pair of Garne SG12s and a pair of waterproof Alpinestars Tech 7s, and I need to return one of them that doesn't fit as well as the other.

Tech 7 cons
>super high arch
>narrower - the sides sides start to curve up sooner that the SG12s
>sole molded on
>Left foot starts hurt after a while from the narrower mid foot sole

SG12 cons
>showed up damaged with the top velcro closure separated from the outside flap (this can be ignored because I can fix it myself)
>buckles feel cheaper than the Tech 7s
>the top of the toe protection that comes up to about mid foot digs into the top of my feet, causing pain
>still slightly too narrow. Left foot starts to hurt after a while.

Tech 7 pros
>waterproof
>I like the way they look besides for the molded on sole
>better bike feel, slightly more flexible (can be a con)
>$120 cheaper

SG12 pros
>slightly wider (but still not wide enough)
>flatter sole
>feels more protective
>stitched on sole that can be replaced

These are both size 12s. I wear size 12 wides in regular street shoes, but 12 a little long. Which pair do I send back? Or maybe I should send both and size up to 13s. I didn't think I would need to as 12s are just slightly too long. The size 12 Tech 7s are plenty long. I'm just getting my thoughts out there and written down.
Thank you for reading my blog.

If you're looking for a motorcycle that is the closest to a car on long distance rides then yes, it just does that better.

The best way to explain it is to think about one feature - the reverse gear, although we should call it a mechanism more so than a gear, because it just uses starter motor. Both bikes are big and heavy and there's no way around it but this one bit makes goldwing much more convenient when you're parking it. You can extrapolate it everywhere else. Both Harley and Goldwing will generally not vibrate that much(outside of idle for Harley), but you know there's no possibility of V2 vibrating less than a 6 cylinder boxer that often runs at 3500 RPM while cruising highway speed. Harley's used to be considered less reliable than Japanese bikes but honestly that's largely a legacy issue now, but still, which bike do you think will hold out better after 100k miles? And yes these are realistic mileages for this class of bike.

Now for a normal motorcyclist a lot of it sounds like Harley is simply less of a car and more of a motorcycle, but the grand tourer buyers typically want more of a car.
>>
>>28858008
>it just uses starter motor
Weak, but understandable from Japs.
>>
>>28857604
That's enough salt to keep the ice off the county roads all winter. Touring bikes are something Harley does right. HD gets up to a lot of silly marketing shenanigans but the bikes are comfy and crush the highway all day long. Parts and availability is abundant, and every two horse town in the US has a shop that can get you back on the road.
>>
>>28857158
I'll assume you're European.
How low CC? A1 compliant(125cc)? Assuming you're talking about bikes produced in the last decade you're going to have to go Chinese if honda minimotos and yamaha xsr125 don't do it for you, that's the sad truth.
A2 compliant that's another story but most of them will be Indian made. Royal Enfields are known quality, there's obviously Triumph 400 which did sell really well for a reason, you can get Kawasaki 650 RS cucked to comply with A2, but that may not be "low displacement" anymore there are some Chinese-Italian Brands like Benelli or Fantic that seem to not suck, finally there are the random brands Indians rebadge their bikes under, from that genre I think the more sensible option is Jawa because at least there you know they've design the trims of them uniquely so they look like old Czechoslovak bikes rather than British ones which is the standard in this category.
>>
>>28858016
Harley does that too, on trikes. The only bikes that have reverse gear proper are factory sidecar ones and that's solely because of some regulatory compliance.
>>
>>28858020
They're not bad, I haven't said so, it's just that comparatively Goldwing or K1600 is just better. They're all expensive, they all have features you don't need, they're all heavy, they are all mostly comfortable, it's not like parts availability for either is bad either. It's just that in reality you look at these 3 and the only arguments for harley are sort of irrational(not bad, irrational) and that's a sign that it's "the brand" speaking.
>>
>>28858032
>the only arguments for harley are sort of irrational

>>28858045
Nobody who picks Harley as his big touring bike can provide a rational reason why it wasn't k1600 or goldwing, period. They'll say stuff like fit and finish(yes I trust you that BMW is going to be soooo much worse!), or le V2 rumble etc. but those are irrational things. I'm not saying they're wrong(ultimately it's recreational object, the irrational part of its enjoyment is important), I'm just saying they are feelings, not reasoning. A goldwing will vibrate less, have more practical amenities like reverse mechanism(real man handles his bike with his muscles, says the irrational, because that's part of the bike experience, but that's a fee fee not a reason), they are well known and understood in workshops across any country at all and given that it's largely made in the US parts availability isn't a problem.

I'll repeat again, just because the reasons for a harley are irrational doesn't mean you should never buy a harley yarrr, it simply means that once you get into a market that is more specs than feels, like sportsbikes or adv(let alone dirtbikes), it will fall apart - see the post the conversation has started from(why doesn't Harley make crotch rockets).
>>
>>28857329
I did the FPR already actually. I haven't tested the new one though.

I don't feel like the engine is bogging at all, but I've never ridden any other liter bikes to compare it to (only 600s). Generally I would say the engine runs fine except for a fairly pronounced uneven idle between 12-1500 rpm. I did plugs last summer but the old plugs that I pulled looked fine and the new ones didn't make any appreciable difference that I felt. The bike's fuel pump also failed over the summer and I also cleaned a ton of gunk out of the fuel tank breather, which was clogged so bad when I first bought it that the fuel tank would pressurize and spit gas out of the filler cap (I ended up also replacing the filler cap). I think the bike was neglected at one point so I suspect further fuel system issues.

This however is new to me! I actually did the cam chain tensioner because I thought I heard it rattling but it didn't fix the noise, it might be this instead. I will take a look at this this weekend and also pull the injectors to see what they look like. Thanks anon

Set your idle to 1200 rpm.

The only normal flat spot in the baba blades powerband is 3000-3150~ rpm because the intake Flapper and the exhaust htev are switching their respective positions to a more free-flowing one. (It's hard to convey what I mean into text alone)
This delay/flatspot is due to these two systems physically opening between 2 optimal positions, everything else is not normal.
Here's a resource for the HTEV
If you are hearing noises still then it's probably the basket springs (NOT the clutch springs for the plates) you can weld a shim to fix the noise but it's not needed.
https://youtu.be/VFJTkY2XX-U?si=fw4OGBMMlaNLQJ3Z

I believe it was injector 4 that's particularly noisy (far right side when sitting on the bike)
One more thing, go to the right side of your bike. Look at the right sides primary frame bolt near the seat. There should be 2 punch mark dimples on the top left and right of the fastener face.

These are ID marks for 2 important recalls from honda.
The mark on the left
>primaey Fuel line recall
The fuel line would expand under extreme heat conditions, the wrong rubber compound was used you can get a replacement from Honda for free from their recalls department.
The mark on the right
>Clutch assembly recall
This was only on a small handful of early 954s. In Hondas pursuit of weight savings they made the shift shaft hollow and I cant rememeber the other reasons for the clutch failure but There were instances where the rod would collapse and two clutch plates would misalign bricking the transmission. There are clutch assembly recall kits you can get but you can also just check your bikes VIN to see if it needs these things / inspect the frame for the 2 marks.

They're very rugged machines once sorted, the issue is most of them were either neglected or abused so you gotta thug it out till the point of a healthy baseline and just service the fluids.

I put distilled water in designed for coolant systems. I am sadly the second owner of this bike and the dealer I bought it off did a lot of work fixing it up. It's quite possible they've put something fucked in the old thing to sell it.

Last second hand motorbike I ever buy I tell you what. Which sucks because I basically cannot afford a Goldwing otherwise. They're 55k new here.
>>
>>28857654
Goldwing blows a road glide out of the water man. By a bomb threat. They are to be ridden to be believed.

That said Honda has fallen behind in one regard recently - the dash computer/instruments. Goldwing is way behind big touring Harleys in that regard.

That said I'd take a Goldwing any day for pure riding pleasure. Get a road glide if you intend to maintain it yourself though. Goldwing maintenance is hell.

I wanna get a shorter slip on for my bike because I like the look of the clean rear wheel. pic related exhaust site claims:

>DB levels tested @ 5500 RPM
>Stock = 97-98 DB's
>GP-S1 = 105 + DB's

so a 7db increase, how annoying should I expect it to be? is it a bad idea? (noise restrictions are not really enforced in my shithole)
>>
>>28858358
>bike inspections
Thank god I am spared from that
>>28858361
Doesn't decibel levels go in uhhh what's the fancy word, like logarithmic scale or some shit, a 7db increase isn't 7% louder, but it's 7 times louder, so that pipe is going to be loud as all fuck
>>
>>28858361
Did this once. Way too loud even with gp shortie catalysts.
>>
>>28858365
+10 dB correspond to a 10x increase in (acoustic) power output
-3 dB is a power output reduction by half (+3 dB is doubling)
So +7 dB = +10-3 dB = 5x power
Power scales with the square of the amplitude, which is proportional to sound pressure, so the sound pressure goes up by a factor of the square root of 5, i.e. a bit more than 2.

But that's a lot of mathematical babble. Yes, SPL is a logarithmic scale, but your ear also works in a similar way. All else being the same (ambient air pressure, frequency distribution of the noise, distance from the sound source), +7dB will indeed be roughly equal to a perceived increase of 7 "noticeable" steps in loudness.
>>
>>28858401
A very fancy way of saying "it's going to be unbearably loud", but that's what I remembered from school that was 2 decades ago, which I skipped most of anyway.
>>
>>28858410
105 dB is very loud, but not *that* much louder compared to the ~100 it's already putting out

usually it's a chip in the paint which causes air loss (my front has this problem right now) and leads peeps to remove all the paint. If you're still leaking at the rim just seal that spot with rubber cement down in between the bead and rim.

>with your own bike and booking your own exams with the DMV and save a huge chunk of cash
Interesting. This sounds like it should be possible here too (e.g. you don't need to go through a bike shop for the inspection, you can go directly to TÜV/Dekra) but I never tried. There is a required number of lessons afaik though, so you'll have to talk to a riding school either way

Theoretically there's nothing stopping you from riding a bike on your own terrain and then just booking an exam directly rather than through a driving school. But with the Netherlands being a small and dense country it's impossible to go anywhere that isn't a public road or a busy parking lot, so you're kinda expected to just dish out the money for driving lessons and then do the exam. The exams themselves are a big portion of the price, you pay about 300 eur to the DMV just for the theory and two practical tests, luckily that's included in most driving school packages here.
After 24 you get the full A anyways, the A1/A2 stuff is just for younger people without any driving experience

so in italy it works like this: you apply for a motorcycle license and pay for the papers, get a useless state doctor to sign a document where they say you don't use drugs, don't have weird diseases and are able bodied, pay the doctor and you are now "registered". Then you have to book the theory exam and pay for that unless you already own a driving license, in that case you already passed theory! and they just give you the pink-paper that is the learner's license, it works for 6months and you have 6months to book and prepare for the practical exam (you pay for that too). if you fail you have to wait a bit before trying again and pay a little fee but nowhere in this process are there required lessons or stuff like that so by going full privateer you can get a full A license for something around 250~300€ AFAIK. the only requirement for the exam is you have to have full gear, bike can also be not yours as long as you have a written document that the owner is lending it to you for the exam and has to be the same "category" as the license you want to get, so to get full A you must take the exam on a full A bike

Also how did that work for you GSAnon? that bike has more than 47Hp so it shouldn't be A2 compliant and you said you had it before getting full A. i thought germans where very stricts about stuff like that

You are never really safe from brain bleed dude. I got three different people that lived that when I was in a car club near the tail of the dragon, you have no idea how many miata guys crack their skulls on roll cages.

Aren't the benelli cheaper. Also I love the cb500x/nx but how tall adv bikes that aren't even capable off road annoys me.

Sounds pretty nice, still a lot of bureaucracy but at least it's cheaper (just be good at riding despite not having any guidance lol)
>more than 47Hp
A2 goes up to 48 PS and the GS is just below that, so it was perfectly fine.
The CB 500 I got to replace it was restricted to 48 PS (and the restrictor plates in the intake were DEFINITELY in place until I got it officially derestricted to its full, glorious 58 PS after upgrading the licence.

Mine made it difficult to fail and still failed anyone who dropped their bike(happened 3 times), that poor tu250 eliminator and klx, I still have no idea how I did a figure 8 on a grom with zero clutch management. I about dropped my rebel300 multiple times when I bought it relearning till I got a grasp of how a clutch works. Now I basically only stall at 1 uphill narrow turn at a stop on my commute occasionally.

>tfw I haven't ridden my bike in three weeks between work and a vacation

I was going to ride it motocamping to Joshua Tree and Death Valley but some of the nights ended up with 50mph winds and freezing rain, so probably best that I didn't. I'm excited to go back their and ADV around on all those cool dirt roads and trails, though.

I have ridden at least once a week now for 52 straight weeks. The highest temperature was 102, the lowest temperature was 4, the worst rain storm was the edges of Hurricane Erin. The worst weather I rode in was hail, it hurt really bad. I got fifteen minutes into my commute, turned around, and went home to switch to leathers. It still hurt. I had to take back roads instead of riding 70mph on the highway. The shortest trip I took that I’m counting was 10 minutes. I went to Home Depot for road salt. The longest trip I took was three hours, I rode down to the Jersey Shore. Please clap.

And it's a Shinko, the internet
told me they are no good. Truth is, this 22 yr old Shinko handles better than a 5 yr old Bridgestone or a 3 yr old Pirelli Angel CT, IME.
Are we being juiced on tires? Were old ones better? Did Rogan ever talk about this?
