I only know BMW from Germany. Italy has like 270 bike manufacturers. Why are there not more in Germany? And for other EU countries for that matter. It's just 482 different Italian brands. Where is a Renault motorcycle? A škoda?

Automakers killed German motorcycle brands.
E.g. VW bought NSU and then decided that motorcycles don't contribute enough to the bottom line.
But ackshually there are other manufacturers in Germany, like Krämer if you want a boutique bike, or Black Tea if you want an e-scrambler.
And other countries have their brands. Rieju is alive in Spain, Jawa is somewhat alive in Czechindia. Also take a look at blata.cz, they are cute.

I've seen you argue about it in previous threads, but didn't see an answer. Why does a manufacturer take a sport bike engine and puts it on steel frame to create a naked version of that sport bike instead of just stripping the sportbike and keeping the frame material?

The only two bikes worth a damn (and are cheap) I could find are a 1st gen Versys 650 (30k miles) and CB300F (9k miles). Between the two, which should I buy? I know the Honda is a better beginner bike, but I'd like to be able to use the interstate and not get flattened. Is the Kawasaki being top heavy and tall going to be shitty as a total newb? If none of these work out I'm probably going to end up with a 19 horsepower Enfield. I'd ask my friend that rides, but he just tells me to finance a new CBR500 or Z650, which sounds retarded. I've only had it since last Saturday and I'm absolutely loving it, I used to have a Tuono 1100RR and you can feel the similarities in the engine with this. Induction noise is insane.

Also prepare yourself to have VERY hot legs, like holy fuck I swear they hid a microwave emmitter under the seat or something.

File: dampingratio.jpg (369 KB, 1080x1022)
369 KB JPG
>>29025823
As far as I can see the damping of both materials are very similar, mostly depend on the geometry and steel has a bit higher damping ratio. So it still does not make sense.
>>
>>29025837

It's probably a cost thing. Aprilia keep the aluminium frame for the Tuono and Yamaha appear to keep it for the MT-10.

They probably go to steel on the middleweight stuff to keep the price down because people want other shit like fancy LCD dashes, phone connectivity etc and it all costs money, so they have to cut costs where they can, plus on the road your average rider won't notice the benefit of an aluminium frame.
>>
"Aluminum is much stiffer than a steel" is a common normie myth. There's a reason the highest dropout rates are usually among mechanical and structural engineering students because the major looks easy but turns out completely unintuitive.

Young's modulus for steel: 210GPa
Young's modulus for aluminum: 70GPa
Steel is tree times stiffer than aluminum. Manufacturers can make aluminum frames stiffer by pouring more material into the molds, but it has nothing to do with material properties. Live with it now.
>>
>>29025849
Not to get too into the weeds here but aluminum can be stiffened by forging processes and folding it/pressing it onto itself.

Idk why anyone would think alu is stiffer than steel, the reason bikes rock alu is because of weight savings primarily. Not stiffness. Too stiff is actually a bad thing for sports bikes. For example that's one of the reasons why honda went from the RC45 to the RC51 because it was TOO stiff for non-smooth jap tracks. You had to fight to turn it in due to stiffness
>>
>>29025826
I had a CBR300R as my first bike, it wasn't too bad on the highway as long as you don't care about doing much more than 70mph, that's when you start losing steam a little. Very lightweight and easy to learn on, I had no issues at all with mine and 9000miles at that age should be fine.

The age of that 1st gen Versys makes you pretty at the mercy of the previous owners as to what you'll end up with. If it was one owner who gave a shit you'd be fine, but if it was 5 different people who deferred maintenance then you might be in trouble. This would be a heavier bike with a higher center of gravity which can mess with you a little if you're still learning low speed maneuvering. I had a 1st gen Vstrom 650 which is pretty comparable, but yeah you'll definitely feel that extra 100lbs

I don't know about Triumph. I'm nobike making my license rn and visiting dealerships, the triumph bikes looked the saddest out of all I was sitting on. Even cfmoto looked more interesting. Maybe it's all about riding which makes them amazing?
>>
>>29025893
The problem with triumph is it hasn't fully committed to being a chink/jeet bike. So you have english execs scraping their salaries off the top which are massive relative to the average chink/jeet ceo. Now add in the great cheapening they commit to when they go to SEA for manufacturing and you get a bottom tier bike with 0qc and a premium price tag. Now I'm not even gonna add in the curveball nationalism plays, imagine this, your people are building some "British bike" and nobody takes your country seriously when it comes to building bikes. you could build it even worse to ruin the english companies rep and build your cf motos up to a higher degree to mog the "English bikes". The new Honda hornet is 170hp, only thing that finally beat the gsxr750 in power/value for close to 2 decades now. Unlocked and corn fed it could probably put down a honest 190hp with factory reliability you'd expect from a Honda

I admit, part of the reason I rode again might have been part of a trauma response. Like a bid to regain part of myself, to beat my injury and all that stuff. Also, I wrecked less than a year into learning how to ride so it was stubbornness also.

So basically, 80% of the reason I rode again was stupidity.

I'm new to bike maintenance, my 90's Kawasaki Zephyr 750's battery was struggling after not being on a tender for a few weeks and like a retard when I tried to jump it I connected the bike's negative to the car's positive and only realized my fuckup when the jumper cable started melting.
I've replaced the battery but it still wont start. The electrical part of the starting system seems to stop working after only 1-3 start attempts then almost gets the engine going if i leave it for a few hours.
I ride it about once every 2 weeks. it's had troubles starting for about a year when left idle like that but i can usually get it going after a few tries and then it starts up just fine after that so I know it should be able to do a lot of start up attempts.
Any trouble shooting tips? the service manual hasn't been much help and google results are all for if the battery is dead.
>>
>>29026566
You probably fried the stator / rectifier (aka the bikes charging system)

Watch your headlamp when you rev the engine (assuming it still starts) if it brightens as you rev it then congrats that's your problem.
If you open your stator cover and see burnt black copper coils then gg you fried

I can't get it started, the starting system stops getting power from the battery after a few start tries.

Would a damaged stater/rectifier stop it from stating and cause it to act differently even when the engine is off? Before I could get a fuckton of start tries before the engine came on with no battery issues but now its only a few.

It's not unusual for a new battery to need a full charge before it works right. Have you let the tender charge it fully?
Of course, make sure the connections to the battery are good.
The Zephyr was a rebrand of the KZ, and is a very good bike. The charging system is simple.
As you know, the frame is - and called ground.
There is a permanent magnet rotor bolted to the crank, and a stater with coils of wire that sticks inside it. It really only has three coils, connected to three yellow wires. These coils should all connect to each other but not to ground. The way they fail is either short to ground or a coil breaks and one yellow doesn't connect to the other yellows. You can check this with a meter.
The yellows feed into the regulator. Three yellows in, + and - out. So five connectors. You can probably plug in any old Kawasaki regulator, several other brands too. It's an industry standard design.
That's only two parts to go bad. Charge the battery, you should get over 12.5 volts out of it. Get the bike running, and check the volts at the battery when you rev your engine. If it goes up over 13 volts it's OK (14 volts if you have a sealed or Lithium battery) If the volts don't go up when you rev the engine, one of those two parts are bad, or both. Probably the stator.
And now you know everything there is to know about the charging system.

yesterday i was doing some single track and i dumped my bike (wr250r). i had a fanny pack on and my knife was in the front of it, and i guess while i was trying to get the bike out of the mud, my knife somehow flicked open in my fannypack, poked a hole in the bag, and then stabbed my seat several times before i noticed i was catching on the seat.
and i looked down to see this.

what can i do about this?
the cuts are clean. i was thinking about maybe putting some clear silicone or E6000 on them and holding them closed with tape while it cures.

i also saw this guy's post on a forum where he repairs seats with a vinyl backing and locktite vinyl adhesive and silicone. it looks really nice but might be a lot of work.

if i planned to keep this bike, i would just buy a new cover or an aftermarket seat, but honestly i'm planning on selling the bike in the next 3-4 months because i'm moving to a place where i just won't be able to ride offroad.

i want it to not look like absolute dogshit, so i could sell it, but i don't want to splash out on a brand new seat for a bike i'm about to get rid of.

do you guys have any experience with this stuff?

it's vinyl. i'm trying to get as much offroad riding done now, while i still can. i'm worried if i just tape it, it'll get water in and the foam will get fucked up for the next guy, which sucks.
and i also don't want it to look like shit where a buyer goes "this seat is fucked up, take 200$ off the price."

i'd probably spend like 70$ on a seat cover and stapler if i redid it with a new cover. i've never had to do any repairs like this so i don't really know what the play is.

Check your spark plugs and see if they're getting any spark.
If you are. Check your fuel pressure regulator by popping off the lil vacuum line and seeing if there's fuel dripping.
If those are both fine, then it's possible that your rectifier is bad. It's not too common for the starters to go bad unless you had a bike who's previous owners were morons and kept holding the starter button down in a desperate attempt to start it up again

Also I'm assuming you did check the battery with a voltmeter to make sure it's not shot right?

Spark, fuel, air.

Maybe it's just a vacuum leak, Check all the lines and rubber parts for good measure. Good luck anon.

>why would the cbr500 consume fuel the same way as a r3?
Kando
>>
>>29026817
Similar engine size and power?
>>
>>29026801
R3 makes peek power at a higher RPM, so its going bang more to make its power. Verses the CBR500 has more displacement to make a little more power with less bangs.

Extreme example is the R6 makes more power than a R7. The R6 motor is spinning way faster, but that higher RPM sacrifices torque for power.
>>
>>29026824
Ohhhhhhh that makes sense
>>
>>29026823
there are lots of factors that go into it

And they are not similar displacement at all haha. You have quite some learning to do
>>
>>29026827
The CBR is bigger I know, I was just wondering how the bigger bike somehow consumed less fuel than a smaller one
>>
>>29026828
Its all a balancing act between cost, displacement, RPM, fuel and air. Depending on the parameters in which the builder is working in can change how best to build the engine. The common phrase is "there is no free lunch".

its the Z in yzf.
>>

Basically if you're just looking at it on fuel mileage testing cycle it's going to be at higher RPM at every point. With stock gearing CBR500R does 75mph at 5900rpm while an R3 is 7600rpm or so. You could change nothing but the sprockets on the R3 and that fuel mileage picture would change a ton but because the engine is 150cc smaller it would struggle much more with tall gearing. This is a big trade off for small bikes, where say a CBR300R kind of can't afford any taller gearing because it will be fucking slow but with the stock gearing fuel mileage tanks over 55-60mph because of revs. (well it's still pretty good compared to almost anything else though)

You can clearly see this as well in cages that have different final drive ratio options where the super tall gear will be slow as fuck and tow like shit but gets good gas mileage and certain gear options may only be available on the smallest or largest engines.
>>
NC750X with 750cc has 2x better mileage than majority of bikes it's size
>>
Minibikes > literbikes. Prove me wrong.

Are there reliable 2 stroke bikes that can do commuting, or should I give up on the funny exhaust brappers as someone with no space to work on it?
>>
Why do people always say shifting a motorcycle is super hard when its really easy?
I thought you needed to move the gear shift with your foot like a car shifter, but its just straight cut gears, so why do people say its very hard to shift a bike?

I bought this Guzzi with this aftermarket light and tail tidy kit installed, trying to determine how stupid it will look/whether the light will still be visible with a rear rack and a top box on the back. I'm trying to get enough storage to keep my helmet, boots and pants on the bike while I'm at work if possible

I suppose I can get a big bag to strap to the seat but I don't have too much room to work with there. I guess worst case scenario I can find another stock fender and a different stock seat. What do you guys think will look best and still be practical?

rd350 was a 2 stroke dying breed like today's 4 cylinder zx-4r

Any tips for cooking while on the road? I'm always going to be camping within half hour or so of a town so getting meat is no issue just need ideas before I end up with variations of chicken and rice every night.
>>
>>29027262
What's wrong with variations of chicken and rice every night? If getting the meat is no issue why not just eat a meal in town?
>>
>>29027264
>What's wrong with variations of chicken and rice every night?
It gets boring
>If getting the meat is no issue why not just eat a meal in town?
Not as much fun as cooking. I'll eat out once in a while but I'd prefer to make stuff for myself.
>>
>>29027265
Then switch the meat and rice type, idk man I can easily eat the same delicious meal every day.

Wear supportive underwear. Sit far away from the tank, hold your tank with your knees, so when you brake, you don't slide forward to your tank.

Oh I know, but it's something else on the Tuareg, I've owned dozens of bikes, I've never known a bike give off heat on the Tuareg, specifically on the back of your legs, it easily gets up to about 140F on a warm day. It'll be nice in the winter though.
