You do use one of these, right anon?
no, I use alltrails pro
>>2717861Who am I gonna text?
>>2717861No, I use the normal version because I'm not poor. The full sized InReach.
>>2717901GHOSTBUSTERS!
imagine these days there is now a generation of people who were not taught how to use compass and map even in middle school
>>2717906You don't have room to criticize.
>>2717909well im over 40 and atleast i had a father orienteering was just a basic thing we did back then at school, running during summer and by skiis at winter
not american, so, ...no
>>2717906I could do that,if I had some reasonable way of keeping track of distance.I mostly hike forests, with few features to use as guides.
>>2717906>>2717914Originally I had complimented your land nav knowledge but jannie was a cuck and deleted my post, so you're an avatar posting fag and I hope you misplace your compass for a period of between two and four weeks
>>2717906>>2717914>tranime avatarfag>over 40Sad!
>>2718283Someone explain to me why the janny would delete a land nav post. Is land nav not /out/, or what?
>>2717906the number of times ive been drunk at a bar, lecturing random people about topology and compas navigation
>>2717906its an SOS beacon though, not a navigation tool.>>2717914Well I can use a compass and map, do not watch tranime, and also had a father.
>>2717875>Just use a cell phone brosome people actually leave the city, anon
Thoughts on communicating through a meshtastic node instead?
>>2719303Good luck finding one.
>>2717861I have a question, why would you use one in today’s age?>cellphones abundant and has service in 70% of the USA> can carry a 20000mAh power bank that’s the size of a pop tart and can charge your phone for a week+ >trail apps are abundant and reliable, AllTrails works the entirety of the long trail (tested and confirmed)
>>2719310>no cell service>slip and fall>break your leg>it's nearly freezing and it starts to rainEverybody who has found themselves in that situation thought they were the exception and that it could never happen to them.
>>2717861What is it?
No. However, when the next gen is released I will. It's a really good idea.
>>2719310>cell service in 70% of usjust say youre on the east coast. most of my hikes dont have cell service. so any emergency without one im on my own
>>2717901Me
>>2718318Zero
>>2719310>Area has no serviceAnd now you're fucked.>Phone battery is dead and you would need to fuck around with charging itFucked>Phone can't give your precise location, so you die of exposure or bleed out while the rescue teams fail at finding you and need to call off the search after your phone dies or you pass out or whatever and it becomes too dark to find youAlso fucked.>One of the many fragile components on your modern cell phone has brokenAbsolutely fucked.>Not in any state to actually make a phone call or do anything other than press a buttonDefinitely fucked.
>>2717901sar when you come across a tourist with w broken ankle or when you wake up in the morning and your friend is coughing up blood. both have happened to me
I live in a country so dense, that you cant go any where without being able to see a house.
>>2717906Why would you need to be taught how to use a compass?
>>2717861If I'm leaving cell service it means I don't want to be connected to the grid at all. I'm comfortable managing risk knowing there's no possibility of rescue and relying on my skills in an emergency or otherwise. I get that some of you need the security blanket though, and it's for the best that you have one.
>>2720817Kek @ you
>>2717861I use thisHas a built-in GPS
>>2717861IPhone 14 onwards have full satellite communication.
>>2717861No. I'm looking forward to the sweet release from the suffering of life
>>2721345Sweet lovely deathI am waiting for your breathOh, sweet deathOne last caress
>>2717906>these days>nowI'm 35 and I never learned any of those things in school.
>>2717861In my country the mobile coverage is 98% so I don't really need that, but would buy one if I go to a place where is no coverage.
>>2721870>I'm 35 and I never learned any of those things in school.Me neither, but I did learn them in Boy Scouts :^)
How much do you think Garmin is spending annually to advertise their shitty, outdated devices on this site? You know you can just use your phone and bring a battery backup, right? The phone can call a satellite in an emergency, it can load your position on pre-downloaded maps without any cellular service too. And, best of all, you can download offline maps even in the car on the way to a hike if you change your mind, or something is closed.
>>2721870I did, and also how to calculate a square root. Now I don't do either because we have portable electronics to do menial tasks for us.
>>2722138>The phone can call a satellite in an emergencyWait, seriously? You're telling me all cell phones are secretly satphones?
>>2722150no, just newer models, I'm not sure if Android models have this feature too but I assume the recent ones doIphone 14 and newer can communicate with satphones, but only in an emergency, you can't just send text to your family or something
>>2717861i only have my cheap gps and pmr 446
>>2717906I was taught how to use a compass and map as a kid. I can still do that, and judge my pace to know how far im going over time. Still use one. Easy to just check a phone. The real reason I have it is because I've had two different people Im with have medical emergencies over the years and I do a lot of high elevation exposed scrambles or off trail. 99% of the time its so my parents who are too old to hike can follow along and we have something to talk about.
>ITT people in this thread don't have SHF/EHF SATCOM communicationI carry my inReach even on the safe streets of Japan. You never know when some pozzed, indoctrinated individual chimps out and you are cornered or forgien national glowies attempt to abduct you.I even have the remote function on my garmin watch so I can auto alert if it my EKG flatlines for more than 5min and also erase all personal data on my watch/inreach.I think of it like a health bar/pager in a video game.
>>2717906>someone had to teach him how a compass workssome of us are not retarded
>>2717861no i tell people where i'm going and when i'm expected to return and give updates at waypoints because i have people that care where i am and how i'm doingthere is a mirror on my compass and i have aloud whistle and signal colored clothing on my person
>>2723403Based competent outdoorsman.
Someone is always aware of my route. If I don't check-in in time the search party will still have a good idea of where I am.Almost nothing can kill me so quickly that one of these things would make a difference.
>>2723403>>2723482>not being completely and utterly alonengmi
Hmm
>>2723492emotional neglect is a spook
>>2723212Yeah but isn't all this shit subscription based?
>>2723671Don't be poor.
>>2723671pay the fee you dumb goy, you aren't a dirty peasant, are you? Then consoom more!
>>2723680Don't be poor, it's gross. You got your engineering degree didn't you...?
>>2723687still won't buy it, sorry! If I had a gf/wife and she wanted me to use one I'd accept it if she paid for it though
>>2723679>be apocolypse >why won't my payment go through???
>>2723671The SOS and sat comm stuff is. The watch integrations will work as long as Garmin maintains the apps. The functions on the watch itself will work without Garmin until you can't recharge the battery.
>>2723482>Almost nothing can kill me so quickly that one of these things would make a difference.found the hiker
>>2717861Nice try garmin, buy an adAlso take a chance like that fag from 127 hours and maybe your cuck life will be worth something after that
>>2717861dafuq is this?
I'd get one if I could pay as you go for messages without a fucking monthly subscription. Going to be obsolete soon with starlink connecting to phones anyway.
Personal locator beacons don't require a subscription and are more reliable.
