I just biked the C&O Canal

>>2719925Im going /out/ in a few days, i'll post when im back
Me and some buddies had a few drinks in our snow cave last weekend, then slept there.Shit was pretty comfy.
>>2721636Second entrance to the cave.
Small lizard fellow.
>>2721637how long could you stay in shelter like that
I live in snow and I recently somewhere warm and it was a torrential downpour so I went for a walk in the rain and I found this real world /pol/ that they have there
Hiking up a steep and prominent peak in my area while most of this board stays /in/ and argues over gear
>>2722924almost looks familiardoesn't look THAT steep but maybe that's just the climb-up-the-spine part, at least the trail is soft and not all rocksis there a view at the end you could show us?
>>2722927It looked a lot steeper in real life than in my photos. There weren't any views up top. I wasn't expecting any. This was primarily a fitness hike. Many more to come so I can stay in shape for the proper mountains this summer.
>>2722924>>2722940based, I also started going on some fitness hikes in preparation for when the snow will melt higher up. There's a 10km loop I can start from my home that quickly ascends 600m to this peaceful little trail that barely anybody goes to. The whole thing is short enough that I can just do it whenever I have a couple of hours of free time, but some parts are really steep so it's still a good training for my legs
>>2720295>>2720841>>2720693Amazing spots. My pic is from a camp ground. Was a bit wet but good to get away and have a fire when it's cold.
>>2723154

>>2723126You've got some impressive mountains near you. The biggest elevation gain in my region is only 400m so I end up stringing together a bunch of hikes until I reach my desired mileage/gain for the day. That and other cardio workouts (cycling, running up and down stairs, playing sports, etc.) pay dividends whenever I go to bigger mountains and knock them out.
>>2723160>That and other cardio workouts pay dividends whenever I go to bigger mountains and knock them out.one of the best feelings ever, especially when you go back to a place that fucked you up in the past and reach the top effortlessly

>>2723682It's like a realistic Roger Dean combined with non-hell Barlowe
>>2723682Oh this one is so beautiful Love the composition.
>>2723712
>>2723154That's beautiful I havent seen trees like those. Yeah, it was a great spot, you could see the whole lowlands and the moutains on the other side.
>>2723154>>2723767pretty sure those are eucalyptus trees which are non-native/invasive. looks like somehwere in the bay area
>>2723769I didnt know they get that tall. I also thought they are only in Australia for some reason
>>2723787they got brought over and are now a real problem. Local wildlife dont like them and they are incredibly flammable
how much elevation do you guys usually gain in a day out?I usually gain around 700m/1km, over 5/10km distance, that's on my day hikes, I usually go to the feet of a small mountain, walk up to the ridge, then walk along the ridge until it's finished and come back, usually the part where I get up to the ridge is off trail, and also when I come back down, so it's difficult to get there due to very steep inclination and vegetation/rocks/vertical walls/mud getting in the way, but it gives a good appreciation of how it is to traverse terrain, so now when I look at a map.i know how it would actually be to move there

Just got in from a little 5.5 mile hike
>>2720692Where was this taken?
>>2723697i also went into some wetlands this past weekend, still not bright and green yet but i think it'll green up by next week
They're not thousands of feet above sea level, but they're the hills I have.
Gulf coast
>>2724230that's quite satisfying where is that?
>>2724243A patch of wilderness in Northern Arkansas.
>>2724245I need to go there. Is it called leatherwood state park or what? That's been on my list for a while cuz its very gentle plateau.
>>2724246Leatherwood Wilderness, part of the Ozark-St. Francis National Forest. There's a horse trail in the southwest corner that's easy to follow, albiet not easy to hike.
>>2724248And your view is Almus knob or something different?
>>2724249A couple klicks east.
>>2724250over by push mountain, which is that? also looking now at elephant head trail, that looks quite interesting
>>2724251Literally just a nice spot on the side of the horse loop.
>>2724257So the quickest way there is park on 341 and take what the topo map calls farris road down the hill? That looks steep as FUG.What's at the red plus sign? Anything?I appreciate the map. Its hard to figure out where stuff is. Anon posted an amazing uninterrupted view from where he said was St francis national forest but I still don't know where. Been dreaming about that spot.
>>2720341Elk River Falls? I used to frequent that back in college
>>2724263YESdid you go to appalachian state?
>>2724264I was at little ol LMC. I do yearn to go back to Appalachia someday. Can't remember the name of this hike but it was over in Pisgah
>>2724266table rock maybe in linville gorgeanother anon said he climbed there
>>2724226Bulgaria, Stara Planina. The other pic with the 3 stones is some old Thracian megalith. The whole area is full of them. Great spot because on one side you see the mountains and in the other direction are the lowlands. >>2720692>>2720693 North and south views.
>>2724225that is not a coat rack anon....
>>2724266they are trying to run out all the normal folk and import rich people, damn near every ridge is littered with houses if it's not on reserve land. feels bad man.

>>2720341Used to live in Newland back in the early 2000s. I jumped down that waterfall countless times in the summer. Really miss the area
>>2724980Looks pretty terrifying seemed like it would kill you. I hope to go back there when Carver's Gap isn't covered in snow and hike to the balds without having to wear spikes in APRIL.
>>2724984Locals all do it, I saw 10 year olds doing it lol. So happy to see other people post photos from that little corner of Western NC. Back when I lived there I didn't have any kind of digital camera and only have slowly fading memories of the area. If you get the chance do the loop around Price Lake off the Blue Ridge Parkway. I hiked that loop countless times on my way home from work. Really miss it there.
>>2724988I tried taking the Blue Ridge Parkway northbound near Boone and it was really pretty at first but then there was a road closure and turns out the section of BRP from NC/VA border to Roanoke kinda sucks and barely has any views but not gonna do that again! On my list is Elk Knob State Park seems like a neat view and maybe I'll be back in time for the rhododendron bloom. It was pretty cold and windy while I was there, I would like to come back in warmer weather. I've got more pictures I'm just a bit lazy in posting them. I've never jumped from a waterfall. I'll swim in the bottom pool if the water is calm, but that water was aggressive. Too bad the water levels are too low now for waterfall enjoyment and there's little rain on the way,. I visited this old courthouse near Jefferson, NC and got a really wonderful blue vintage old glass bowl for only 12 dollars at the gift shop. And a wood bowl as well. I learned an important lesson about not trying to access 5000 ft + high country outside the may-early oct window
>>2724989I used to ride my dual sport up and down the Parkway. As a punk ass early 20 year old I didn't know how good I had it in that area as far as out stuff goes. Check out Grandfather Mountain, it's a little touristy but worth it. Same for Mount Mitchell which is the highest peak in the eastern US. A part of me really wants to move back to the area but my next move will be my last move since i'm getting older and have a family now. After being on the west coast with all the land you can fuck around on the east coast seems so...small.
>>2724996>Check out Grandfather Mountaina) costs money (don't really care THAT much but still)b) very limited open hoursI really hate supporting places that gate you in if you aren't back by a certain time it ruins the vibe of the hikec) you need to use ladders and cables to get to the best viewsI cannot do that lol.>Same for Mount Mitchellran out of time for that and it was too far away, BUT, I did get to see it from a distance at Blowing Rock which was super cool. And I'm pretty sure you can see Mt Rogers from where these pictures were taken from, Big Pinnacle up at Grayson Highlands north of Roan Highlands. I will certainly revisit Roan Highlands in warmer weather. >fter being on the west coast with all the land you can fuck around on the east coast seems so...small.what? its huge you can drive for hours and there's hills in all directions from southern NY, PA, MD, VA, WV, KY, TN, NC etc. like there's so fucking much you will never do 1/10 of all the trails even if you tried
>>2724999Most of that land is private land with tons of rules and regulations. I was born and raised in PA and used to think all the west coast talk was bullshit, then I went out there. Use to ride my dual sport on endless trails in Wyoming/Montana/Idaho area, would setup long range rifle ranges on a whim. It's a whole different world out there
>>2725005>Most of that land is private land with tons of rules and regulations.what? yeah most of it but my whole point is there's TONS of public land in every state you will never ever hike all the trails on offer in even a PART of the east
>>2725006I get what your saying but the vastness you get out west is unbeatable. If I can't live in the North West, i'd for sure settle into Western NC.
>>2724984If there are large waves going BACK INTO the fall it could probably trap a swimmer

>>2723676No collapse, we had to get the heavy duty shovel to dig in that snow, was hard as concrete.
