Can someone who has done this work say what it was like? I am currently looking at jobs with my local government and these look pretty good. Decent pay and you get to be /out/ doing stuff like maintaining trails and blowing leaves

no yes no no no maybe no no

Being a ranger is pretty chill if you're upstate. Maintenance isn't too bad. If you're okay with riskier working conditions, the scaling team pays very well. State retirement is decent. I've only worked maintenance when the swim area was closed, but it was pretty chill.
For reference, I had ~4 years of work as a lifeguard while I was in college. Nothing but good things to say about my time at the parks
