How many of you carry a traditional folding pocket knife while /out/?Do you feel the steel used in traditional folders is outdated or that they are harder to maintain? If you do carry one, what kind?
>>2760340My knifu is a chinkshit folder with a marlinspike, which has proven an incredibly useful tool. You should get one.
>>2760340I have never had a need for a knife outside except to cut a wurst desu
>>2760340I carry a random multitool and a mora knife
>>2760340they're called slipjoint knives.(hope that doesnt come off as rude)
>>2760340>Do you feel the steel used in traditional folders is outdated or that they are harder to maintain?yes and no.Always research the steel usedmost of them run to soft 420HC and some companies like victorinox use Martensitic stainless which has a 15% chromium content to help prevent rusting. Most OTC slipjoints will use 420 440 or even 410 HCwhich is common as fuck due how easy it is to sharpen and use.If you've used a pocket knife at all in your life you've more than once have wielded a 420HC blade
this and a carbon mora
>>2760378
>>2760378>>2760373(me)>>2760371(me)i use the swiss champhas everything a multi tool has but smallerwhich is perfect for me because i like the compactnessat work i used the hiker
>>2760340I have a SAK. Never needed more.
>>2760385have also the swisschamp, but i dont need the tools. ranger ist perfect for me, i use ranger also at work in my freetime when im not /out/. i have it alway in my trouser pocket. which champ is too bulky and uncomfortabel for me.based victorinoxanon
>>2760340A Case similar to your pic is one of my main EDC knives, but it's not what I take /out/, I usually have an SAK or Leatherman and sometimes a Mora if the situation calls for it.
How the fuck do you even sharpen a blade that small? I generally use my larger combat/survival knives for delicate tasks because they give me so much to hold on to that they're very easy to sharpen, much like a hatchet, and that compensates for their rather awkward proportions. Otherwise I just use a box cutter. I stopped using small folders years ago because I can't sharpen the damn things.
>>2760389for me its Super Tinker. It has long and short blade, scissors, Philips screw driver and bottle/can opener. It has an useless hook however. I wanted a small Tinker initially but it is not made anymore unfortunately
>>2760340I take this. It's a mora clone obviously (but it's stainless steel), and got it because it does everything a knife should. I like how I can open tin can of beans or whatever, and also snag off the brushy part of a log for firewood. It's tough, was cheap, and I'll just beat it to death before sharpening it up again. It feels like just a knife, like a kitchen knife, which means that I can just have fun with it instead of csring about it like a cherished item.
>>2761305
>>2761306Scandi grind sucks ass. I'm not sharpening that wide ass bevel, simply not gonna do it.
Stockman is a pretty darn useful pattern, especially in a full size (opinel 8 for scale)
>>2760821>>2760385(me)same way you sharpen a big bladethey also make small ceramics like the work sharp edc sharpenerjust gotta be a bit more gentle as there is not as much steel to peel off
>>2762785They're insanely good value compared to "tactical" knives as well. You can go to Tractor Supply and for $80 bucks you get a beautifully finished Made in America knife with three blades, real bone scales, etc. In the tactical world most stuff at that price is made in China with plastic or cheap anodized aluminum scales. The one thing I'll say about Stockmans, though, is that I don't find the spey blade that useful, the long clip point and short sheepfoot do pretty much everything I need. What I really wish I could get is a knife with those latter two blades, but a bottle opener instead of the spey. Sadly the only things that come close are no-name junk, or the GEC beer scout which is a totally different chunkier handle pattern and only has one blade, and is fucking unobtanium anyway.
>>2762812>I don't find the spey blade that usefulIts actually my favourite blade on it Ha!Great for smaller fish like perch, bailing twine, packaging, cloth, anything where you can run the blade up and it doesn't pierce what's underneath
>>2762785>>2762906What's an alternative to Case in EU? They rip me off with importing fees here.
>>2762913Don't know, I'm in EU too, Lamnia.com has some good deal sometimes, in my opinion, the quality of a Case is well worth the price
I took an actual pic of my Case along with my other main EDC for /k/, may as well post it here too. >>2762906Interesting. I've never used the knife for fishing or anything so maybe that's the difference, I find that the other two are ideal for most of what I do. I switch to more "serious" knives when I know I'm gonna be doing stuff that needs them anyway though, the Case is mostly just a casual EDC for opening boxes and cutting limes for cocktails or whatever.
>>2762906I've carried the 6375 case for years. Originally bought by my dad in 1960's, the handles are worn slick and the shield is pinned not gluedSpey blade is used as a screwdriver/rust crap dirt scraper.
anyone have experience with Rough Rider? they are just so cheap i dont trust them, but ive really been wanting a classic barlow lately
>>2760340They can be made with modern steel.
>>2763394Worth it to try out. I have a RR Scout Knife that is well worth the price. Not as good as a Case or Boker, but excellent for a beater or to try out strange patterns.
>>2760340I occasionally look through antique malls for old tools and I see a lot of pocketknives. Been thinking about getting a Case if I see one in good condition.
>>2763394Just bought 5 rough rider slip joints a few weeks ago, 3 barlows, a trapper, and a stockman. Fit and finish is good/ better than the one case I have which has backsprings that aren’t flush when open, though the action feels crisper on my case and the covers look more refined and the polished blade looks nicer on the case. Rough rider has better steels on some models, my favorite is the wasp Barlow in vg10 and the “classic carbon” stockman. I also picked up a marbles trapper in D2 which feels nicer than any of the RR’s in terms of action. Got a slight heavier pull and a better sound, supposedly marbles and rough rider are made on the same equipment/ in the same factory so maybe marbles is just better qc’d? For the money they’re great if you just want to try out a new pattern.
>>2760340Bit of a newfag to this board, despite having lurked on/off & noticed the knife thread disappeared overnight; What do you lot look for in a knife? Besides being sharp enough to cut things of course. Do you have a preferred blade style? What do you consider too big and what do you consider too small?Ta lads.
>>2764548Highly depends on use, kinda like asking if you prefer an impact drill, a wood lathe or an apache helicopter I prefer straight edge clip points, but, that doesn't mean I can't try out different stuff Size is also very dependent on use, when I am outdoors, my knife is mainly for cooking, whittling feather sticks for the fire, gutting fish, mushrooms, when I am at home or work its annoying packaging The glock and the kukri are just for fun
>>2764548>What do you lot look for in a knife? Besides being sharp enough to cut things of course. The materials, construction methods, and country of manufacture.>Do you have a preferred blade style? Yes. I used to like spear but now I like clip points a lot more.>What do you consider too big and what do you consider too small?Depends on the use. A belt knife for me should be 4"-6" on the blade and a pocket knife should be 3-4.5" on the blade.
I'd love to own SAK with stag scale. Does anyone know if there are any manufacturers still making knives in this style?
>>2760381why did you feel the need to include your disgusting rotting toes in the picture? do you think anyone here wants to see that cheese factory shit?
>>2760352what do you use the marlinspike for? I thought they were just for rope on ships.
>>2765387i have a marlin spike, not on my folder, but, surprise man! ropes arent just on boats, really good pick for things, kinda the same thing as taking a leatherman backpacking, sure, why would you need pliers and skrevdrivers?but trust me, it will take less then a day for you to find your own uses for it
>>2764574Böker and Fox has some models
>>2765440Fox is a third of the price of a Böker going for 330usd plus
>>2765441being that the Böker is the one 330+i think marbles had some, and even rough rider, but i cant remember any model namesreally depends on if you care about it being real deer antler, or just jigged cow bone
>>2765525Buck would have the very distinct markings Does have the shield of many Case from that era, but it should be marked CaseDon't know if you know specifically when it was from, but, many army/navy/airforce had them made during ww2
>>2760340>Do you feel the steel used in traditional folders is outdated or that they are harder to maintain? No, neither. They are easier to maintain. Super-hard steels are not defacto a good thing.>If you do carry one, what kind?Case Copperhead, or Canoe.
>>2761375Trvth nvkeUnless you're cutting wood it's useless
>>2764574>>2760352Could I learn the name?
>>2767963Hubertus Professional
>>2760340>Do you feel the steel used in traditional folders is outdated or that they are harder to maintain? In a traditional folder it isn't the steel alone that's the problemIt's the fact that most traditional folders don't lockThe ones that do don't have a strong locking mechanism vs modern folders that use either frame lock or some kind of axis lock knockoff systemIn terms of maintenance of the steel, depends on your needsOlder style non particle steels are typically easier to sharpen, but don't hold an edge as longThe impact strength of the steel just isn't there, but that's essentially meaningless in 99% of folding blades, especially ones with no lock
I’m looking for a big tanky knife I can beat the hell out of while camping/bushcrafting and not have to worry about, any recommendations? I’ve already got a mora but I’m looking for something a little bigger. I’ve heard good things about the bk7/bk9 but was wondering if anyone had experience with anything better.
>>2769452BK7 is more than good for that, especially if you like to customize your scales. Also check out the Condor Hudson Bay Knife.
>>2766759That copperhead looks nice. I’m back on a traditional kick lately, a little bummed to see GEC’s are still sold out everywhere and the ones I bought between 2015-2020 fetch at least $200 on EBay... not sure what’s going on there. I like the Case knives but they’ve gone up a bit lately too. I did just order a nice Case CV red trapper in bone and medium case stockman in brown bone for about $50 each. But I started looking at Old Timers, threw a couple of those in at $15 what the heck. Now the big discovery. I’ve always been a “made in America” proponent, I buy other stuff but usually steer clear of Chinese junk. But with sky high knife prices I’m watching and reading other reviews, namely rough rider. I’m kind of blown away by the quality they seem to deliver on a traditional for $10-$15 bucks. So I’ve got a couple of those in the mail too, SS and carbon steel and can’t wait to check them out. If they’re as good as people say I’ll probably order a bunch more, they’ll make good gifts too. Some of their folders are $8 bucks. Adjusted for inflation, I don’t think there’s ever been a better deal but I guess I should wait until I get some in hand.
>>2770563>the ones I boughtWhich ones do you have? GECs are super nice.I guess Rough Rider makes a Copperhead, too.https://youtu.be/G2T9U2R251M?t=634
>>2760340no, though i have a fewit's all give and take with steel: the less abrasion resistant stainless steels will dull quicker, but it takes far less time to sharpen. high carbon steel is redundant for a pocket knife in the age of stainless, since many cheaper stainless steels are just as tough, but have similar edge retention
>>2760340i got picrel. found out its just chinese stuff they sell on aliexpress, but only in 3rd world and/or spanish speaking countries. still, i like the way it looks and its not too shabby for an aliexpress knife.
>>2770577The current herd>>2771087Yeah I bought a Browning knife at a gun show about 15 years ago then realized it was a cheap Chinese thing. I just got two Chinese Schrade Old timers in the mail today, not the greatest might even send it back. I’m hoping the rough riders I’ve got coming are nicer.
>>2771193>The current herdBitching. Super nice assortment, Anon. Which one do you like the most?
>>2771399Probably these two which I forgot in the photo though I don’t carry them as much as I should. Usually have a Swiss Army knife of Spyderco but think I’ll switch it up more
>>2771639Beauties.
>>2763395Do you own this one? Anything to say about it?I quite like the Svord Peasant Mini as a beater pocket knife. Very little can go wrong with that knife and you can also easily adjust the joints with a narrow coin or similar. Excellent ergonomics and the longer-than-usual friction tang is a big plus (compare to the tiny button thing on your pic rel. However, the wood they use is trash, so it's only worth getting the plastic (NOT polycarbonate, avoid at all costs) ones... so I've been looking for something a bit nicer. The Perttula looks pretty good, and I also like Ohta FK5 (bit small though) and FK7. Though I think the perfect pocket knife for light duty work (cutting cord, food, packaging, fabric) would ultimately be a Svord mini with custom grip like pic rel.
I have this knife that I inherited from my Grandpa. The tin openers don't really lock in place any more but I like how it looks and like how old it is. Plus the knife is easy to pull out without having to fumble around too much. I plan on sharpening it with a whetstone I recently bought. Is there anything else you guys would recommend doing, in terms of taking care of it or cleaning it?
>>2773741That's a cool knife man, only thing I would be careful about is that the scales may have become brittle, if I were you, I would leave it as is, and get a new one in the same style, plenty of brands make that older style "scout" knife, not worth risking that family treasure
>>2760352>marlinspikeIncredibly based and useful. I have a Bundeswehr bordmesser and the spike is amazing for both knotwork and prying. Bought mine cheap at $20, worth it many times over.
>>2775596Continuing from this, I also have an old mid-1900s Herder (Solingen) that I picked up for three bucks in rusted condition and restored. Surprisingly easy to sharpen. The joint still has some rust I couldn't get to which sucks, opening/closing it requires too much force to be safe (have to be very attentive). I hope it goes away with use.
>>2775594>>2777251cool catalogue pages, anon.
I don’t like the way Case does vault patterns for a year then stops making them. Missed out on the Copperhead among others.>>2777283That’s a cool chart
>>2775600Cont.Ran a toothpick through the middle, out came a lifetime of pocket lint. Like holy fuck I'm surprised it still closed at all, this has been someone's go-to knife for a lifetime.Gave it some WD40 and it works like a charm now.
>>2770563>But with sky high knife prices I’m watching and reading other reviews, namely rough rider. So far I like them for the money
>>2777761They get a nice patina too
>>2777761>>2777803Have you ever tested them for lead? Especially the bolsters.
>>2777839No why would I? They’re owned by SMKW an American company
>>2777942Just because they are made in China of supposedly nickle-silver, which is the same material guitar frets are made of, but guitars from China have been showing up with very high lead content frets. Meaning, they are not actually made with what the factory in China tells SMKW they are made of.
>>2760369>I have never had a need for a knife outside except for when I didDo you carry a traditional folding pocket knife for the wurst case scenario?
I got a case stockman somewhere. I used it for some not too strenuous task and the blade got all loose and wobbly.I really like the blades and the shape and compactness and all but if it's just gonna loosen up like that how can I trust it? I've done far more with my victorinox and never had that problem.
>>2778079Lol
ll you need
>>2778079What brand was it?
>>2778079>>2778496Oh nvm you said Case. Yeah sometimes they come with a little blade play, the ‘case lottery.’ I’ve had good luck with them, you could always send it back for repair if it’s a concerning defect.
Look, basically, I’m just not going to carry a flipper.I know… UGH I know. I’m sorry!!!!!It’s just that I’m carrying a traditional is all.HAHAHAHAHA
can we talk about how GECs suck now? even before they got put in scalper hell, everything i ordered from 2016 and onward had a 50 50 chance of having some kind of defect. usually its the edges dulling on the bottom of the backspring inside the knife, but ive had cracked handles and terrible fit and finish. the ones that werent defective were ok, but 2/3 of the ones i bought between 2017 and 2020 were messed up in some way. its like yeah sure they look good in photos but to use one fucking sucks because youre perpetually getting something stuck in the big notch left in the edge of the blade, or anything with a lock failing. frankly, the $300 prices i see on ebay from faggot ass scalpers is the icing on the cake. case cleared those losers ez, and i dont even like case
>>2778628Are they really that bad now? I haven't bought one since '21 or so. Their QC was above par, back in the day. I probably agree with your main sentiment that they are over priced on the secondary market. They are a bit better than Case and should be priced accordingly.
>>2778628Also, the 'run-like-a-retard' way of buying them new is frustrating and the main reason why I stopped getting them.
I'm going to sell all my tacticool shit and go back.
Is it even possible to need more?

thoughts on the Congress pattern? most of them seem to just have multipole of the same blade for no reason
>>2780644Ya, I’m not interested in those at all. I do like the stockman but sheepsfoots aren’t my favorite.
>>2780642Looks really good, Anon. Is it stag?
I inherited this pocketknife today from my grandfather. Google Lens suggested it may be an old lineman's knife issued in Australia.Maybe you guys can tell me more about it?
>>2780693Imitation cinnamon bone stag>>2780694Cool, might be German or Swiss manufacture. Some kind of sheepsfoot liner lock.
>>2780694Very nice, Anon. Heirloom knives are the best.Looks like a rosewood handle. It's not necessary but rub it down with a little mineral oil or baby oil, if you got some. Blade looks to be German steel, sheepsfoot pattern. Very good utility blade. Sheath looks to be home-made and not original to the knife. Rub it down with mink oil if you got some.

if we're posting customs/semi-customs now....
My favorite knife I'm too scared to use
>>2781027i like when higher end knives still use traditional fasteners. it's nice to be able to take something apart without needing a custom tool. i'm on signup for a rask and looking forward to that. do you have any custom/semi or rare and out of production slipjoints?
>>2781031I am not a fan of slip joints so i don't collect them I do have a norseman though, and my friend owns a heretic djinn he loves...also be aware that the actions on grimsmo knives are so smooth that any pressure on the pocket clip or lockbar will make the knife incredibly hard to flip or flick open (it pushes the detente ball into the blade and basically locks it in place)Pic rel its my Norseman
>>2781036cheers, thanks for sharing. up until recently I lived 20 minutes from the grimsmo factory so I'm partially justifying the upcoming purchase as a sentimental thing. I have thick fingers so I had troubles opening a small sebenza at first so I'll keep that in mind with the rask. the interest in slipjoints is a more recent thing for me, I like having one in the bottom of my pocket and the handle materials that are less common on locking folders.
>>2781041are you looking for an integral folder with a fancy handle material or something?
>>2781042not in particular. right now i'm looking for traditionals like northwoods but without the hassle of trying to be around when the right pattern comes out of the factory. steel other than 1095 or whatever they're using would be a nice-to-have.
>>2781045NTA, but that looks like a Case Tribal Lock.
I've been thinking of getting a knife for /out/ activities like foraging. Thoughts on pic related as a knife for newbies?
>>2781371I would say just get a normal carbon no.8 I'm assuming your going for mushrooms, the brush pretty annoying to have attached on the knife, the curved blade really only is handy with woody material
>>2760340Swiss army knife, always have it on me except in the airport :)
>>2760381>>2761306how durable is that plastic sheath
>>2781690pretty sturdy, I have 3 moras,1 in the car, 1 in the garden house which I don't use that often. The one I take with me fishing/hiking is the oldest, probably 7 years old.The sheath only had a few scratches, but they are only visual. I simply repainted it 2 years ago to remove the scratches. The original was red because it was the cheapest mora you can get here, I think €7 from a hardware store
>>2781691does the snap hold thing get loose
>>2781702It doesn't snap, you pull the loop from above over the belt. There is a kind of plastic barb at the loop that fixes the sheath to the belt. My oldest is still as strong as that I have in the car
>>2781704no the knife in the sheath it snaps in so the knife doesn't fall even if the sheath is inverted

>>2783730i also think its pretty tasty, sliced or cubed up into bacon strip/bits sized pieces and friend in some butter, superb, i think for the taste, texture and the ability to have just, a big chunk of mushroom, unlike chanterelles, boletes etc the only one that can rival is hedgehog, which is better 100%. ive never had puffball so cant say on thatalso, a highly underrated aspect is that you can get them in winter, and i swear, in early spring, on a young birch, where the tree is almost bursting with sugary sap, almost like candyi remember reading somewhere about using them in making wine too, but, ive learned that access to home made wine is not a good idea for me
