Anybody ever rehab a poor baby lost without its mother? Show me your critters give me some more advice for keeping the smug little ducker alive happy and healthy so hopefully it can rejoin the wild.Status Update: Rudy is doing well and thriving. I took a stick to the eye and have to get reconstructive surgery
>>2778664Raise him up real fat so he's tasty when I shoot him.
>>2778665Rudy knows how to use firearms and has been trained in a variety of hand to hand combat techniques. Just try it pussy. What are you Haitian?
Top is today. Bottom is June 10th is when the neighbor brought her over.
>>2778670nice
>>2778664Yes birds but it is advices to not pick them up, as they fall of the nest and it’s natural because they are still fed by their parents.I tried once to help baby birds but they died on me. Was a shit experience, and I hate myself for that.>>2778670:) you did well. How much time passed between top and bottom? Does the duck have a name? How does it feel when you pet it?
>>2778669Ah! It’s a Rudy haha nice Rudy the Rambo
>>2778670Wow what a big change a little time makes. Still as handsome as ever Regular Sized Rudy. <3
>>2778664Thanks for the update OP. I’ve been curious how the cute little bastard was doing.

>>2778763About three and a half months old give or take. I absolutely agree leave them alone the mother usually doubles back. In this case I saw the mother and babies early in the morning probably the day after hatch. That afternoon the mixed neighbor lady brought over Rudy because he’d somehow slipped through a crack in the foundation into the basement (yeah) and since I have chickens and turkeys she thought I’d be able to help. I looked all around the creek and at the nearest body of water but I live in an multicultural area and it’s miles to fresh water. I asked the fags here and they helped give me some good advice to keep her alive and so far she’s been doing great. Very very excitable. Not tamed but I DO worry about her ability to thrive on her own now. >>2778736>>2778764>>2778765>>2778779>>2778791Rudy and I appreciate the support more than you know. Been a rough go lately. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0MgGMFuHGlMAnyone who doesn’t like bobs burgers should re-evaluate their life choices.
>>2778819I appreciate it all my frens!
>>2778821Sorry about your peeper Op. Hopefully that works out okay.
>>2779084Thanks anon. I got a nip dr that went to mit… his bedside manner sucks but I trust him to know what he’s doing. Rudy is kicking along and so am I… I’m trying to have perspective.
>>2779143Sorry to hear that anon. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
>>2779240I appreciate it but I’m anxious about the pain again when they clipped the stick out it was genuinely one of the worst pains I’ve ever experienced. Like just fucking leave it doc and I’ll be stick eye. I go on Wednesday but gotta stock up and move birds around so the wife can feed and water a little easier for a few days. I’m hopeful but it’s also a year since my mom passed away so shit really sucks right now.Rudy the other fowl and the family are good… it’s just me struggling… and the whole “almost losing the eye” thing has me messed up in the head a bit. I’m glad Rudy has support because it gives my heart hope and hope is all we have.
>>2779305Wow. I’m sorry anon. Anything to do with the eyes is very scary. I have something called a vasovagel reaction with anything with my eyes. Long story short, I pass out from something as simple as eye drops. Stretching for a bright side I know but at least you don’t have that to contend with. Lost my father about 16 years ago and not a day goes by that I don’t miss him. I won’t say I know how you feel but I’ve traveled a similar road. And ironically my wife is the one heading for surgery so she’s busy trying to make my and my daughter’s life simpler while she is laid up for a few weeks. It’s the third time she is having a similar surgery. Recovery is a nightmare and honestly I’m scared but hopefully third time is a charm. I’m not trying to “one up” what you are going thru but instead trying to say you’re not alone. Hope things improve for you soon anon. Best wishes for you, the misses, and all your critters.
>>2779515I didn’t pass out till he was halfway through the eyelid… and I think that wa from the pain and gripping the chair but they did say that term now that you remind me. I’m sorry to hear about your wife and I hope it all turns out all right and this is the last time you guys have to go through that. I’m sending good vibes your way. May these 3 five leaf clovers bring you all luck!
>>2779515
>>2780494I like your ‘lorps! OP here I pussed out on the eyelid repair for now. I was in the gown and changed. IV in the arm. Talking to the nurse. “Now anon you’ll have to be very careful of the stitches on your cheek from where he’s going to sew it shut after.” “I’m sorry what now?!” “He didn’t explain it to you?” Long story short I am seeking a second opinion while I wait on a different test result. Didn’t feel safe and noped the fuck out of there. Rudy prevails.
>>2780498Were they saying he was going to sew your eyelid shut?!?! Even if that wasn’t the plan and whatever he was going to do was the right thing to do, it would make me nervous that the doc didn’t explain it ahead of time. You should not be getting that kind of info from a nurse. I hope you get the care you need as soon as possible OP. My wife’s surgery went good today and hopefully she can come home tomorrow. Six weeks of recovery though. I need to learn to be a good nurse with lots of patience again. ;) Anyway, I wanted you to know your good vibes and 3 five leaf clovers were greatly appreciated and did the trick. Get well soon OP! Stay awesome Rudy!
>>2780494Awww baby chicks. Awesome!
https://youtu.be/pDnxA1pL84g?si=nnTXrmLFoVzgOP7z
>>2780510I know you’ve been through it, but the first couple days are the hardest. Hang in there fren it gets better. Usually my guts have shit for brains but I was not feeling it and didn’t feel safe. The stitches would have been temporary “only a week or two” but the facts that they didn’t go over the exact procedure and it was an undetermined time for recovery just gave my stomach that sinking feeling.
One of my chickens disappeared two days ago, but she came back last night. I looked for her for at least an hour and I couldn't find her. I thought she was killed.
>>2781694holy shit. I assume that's lucky, like chickens don't have the same home instinct that say dogs or cats do right?
>>2781694>>2781695They do and don’t? Depends on the breed really. I got a buff Orpington as a pullet and she immediately got out and fled and was gone. Showed back up a week later because of the rooster I imagine. She got out a day later again and was gone for two weeks roosting in the trees. Got her back in the run and she’s been one of the best chickens ever. She survived two pitbulls and still lays occasionally. She’s at least 4 years old now. Life… finds a way. Rudypoos dad and OP here btw.
>>2781703That's pretty wild. I guess I saw a bit of that when I was growing up and my neighbors had ducks, chickens, and various fowl and they would always get loose and be roosting in the trees and shit and then just go back home eventually.Hey how's your eye healing if you don't mind me asking? And also hope Rudypooh is still feeling good
>>2781709The eyes okay but I didn’t get the repair done yet and don’t know when I will now. Went to my actual dr yesterday and got a referral to an oculoplastic surgeon that’s closer than 3 hours away and seems a lot more concerned with informing me of what’s up with my eye. Don’t forget you always have to advocate for yourself and they still call the guy who got last place in his class in medical school “doctor”. “I want my Ombudsman!”Then you have to explain what that is. Slight pain but it’s manageable. Rudy is good I’m doing the great shuffle finally so everyone is on isolation.
>>2781695It's definitely lucky that she didn't get eaten. The last time one of my girls tried to sleep outside I found pieces of her the next day. In a way they have a stronger home instinct. Once they learn that their coop is safe and warm they will put themselves away at night. I just go in and count them. I think she was feeling a little broody and wanted to sit on an egg that night.
>>2781703That's a good hen
Oh no, poor you!
Got Rudy back under a light for now. I don’t think she’s going anywhere till spring. We had our first frost last night and I think I’ll just run the lights all winter and keep her in the greenhouse till spring.
>>2783176Somehow I missed this. Rudy is looking great. Speaking of looking, how is the eye situation OP.?
>>2783176ooof pretty Rudy Pooh!
>rehab/raise a few local birdies over a few years>now i get wild quail, jays, grackles, wrens, gamebird doves in the neighborhood>good local birds starting to push out pigeons>still raising another one through the winterstorms are rough on birdies
Hanging in there it’s going to be 80 so I’ll have Rudy out later. The eyes still there… I’m waiting on a plastic surgeon but learning how to blink with one eyelid.
Stories about very old animal rescues? Likely childhood stories?
>>2783176Boy... these threads sure aren't making me super want a duck or nothing.........(I super want a duck)
Absolutely based, these threads stake up all the bots and bitter bubbas alike in their impotent anger HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA keep them coming.
will rudy end up like peanut and fred?
>>2786328Ducks are considered livestock
>>2786328ive watched quote a few The Dodo videos on youtube. people save and raise every animal. i dont know all the details about these govt interventions, but i dont like them. seems very specific as to whose pets they euthanize. and i didnt like their media response either.
>>2786885Just get a license to own wildlife in your state and whatever wild animal you adopt won't get put down. It's not like they're expensive.
>>2786889This. It was like 13 bucks. Also, I checked with my lawyer buddy beforehand when I was still contacting wildlife rescue places. Spoilers: they won’t do shit for a baby duck. I’m still recovering from the eye but mostly there now. Been going round and round with doctors and insurance and I might just leave myself deformed. At this point they’re going to have to slice and dice me again and will require another week of my eye sewed shut. Eye scars are badass anyway. Anyway. Shits been insane for months and I’ve been busting ass trying to get ready for winter. Wife got a new job and we’re looking at relocating 20 min away but way more rural. The house is already paid off so hopefully we can find some acreage and get a place with a pond for Rudy. She’s doing well I’ll put some pics up later after the sun come up. Until then enjoy this sparrow family that’s taken home in my dead fern in a hanging basket on the porch.
>>2787022You can dig out a pond unless your soil is really low in clay. Dig out an extra 6" or so and make sure the sides have a shallow grade. Once it's dig out shovel the dirt into a wheelbarrow or something, add a bunch of water, and stir it. That should separate out the sand silt and clay and after a couple minutes only the clay will still be suspended in the water pour the water into the hole and repeat with the rest of your dirt. You want to get a 6" layer of clay all the way around the pond and puddle it into place. Pouring it in with the water should do most of the work, but you'll still need to stomp it to make sure there's no gaps that water can drain through. If that's too much work then you can try to use an excavator. There was some permaculturist from Germany that made ponds with excavators, but I can't remember his name or exactly how he did it right now. If you're interested I can look him up and post his method.
>>2787041I appreciate it and I’m down for some German permaculture but I won’t be able to do anything till spring or we’re in a new place. Regardless, a water source is a must have on the new property. Creek, stream, or river… something flowing that can be diverted and stored in retention in small ponds like you’re describing would be ideal.
>>2786889Peanuts owner was in the midst of attempting to get those permits when the democrat goons came goosestepping in with their final solution
>>2787050It took exactly 11 minutes at a Walmart sporting goods counter. Literally any place you can get a fishing license man.
>>2787042His name is Sepp Holzer. This wikipedia article has a brief description of the process and I saw a reddit thread discussing the specifics that I'll also link.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holzer_PermacultureThe ponds he makes do not contain any pond liner. Instead, he makes the ponds watertight by sifting the fine from the coarse soil in the earth pile dug up with the excavator. The excavator is then used to pile only the coarse soil up into walls which are then tamped down using the excavator's bucket. The bottom of the pond, he makes watertight by vibrating the excavator's bucket when the pond has been filled with 30–40 cm of water.https://www.reddit.com/r/Permaculture/comments/10z7dvm/sepp_holders_pond_building_question/
>>2787050Sounds like it was his fault. It doesn't take weeks or months to get that license.
>>2787050how the hell is animal control putting down a wild animal that bit a person "democrat" behavor? if they had done the exact opposite and gave him a lifetime permit and put pænut on a billboard you'd still complain and call them democrat goons. you're just a fucking tard.
>>2787022Glad to hear your eye is improving anon and congrats to the wife on the new job. My wife is doing good but a few more weeks in the brace.
>>2787135I hope the rest of the recovery goes well and you guys don’t have any more issues. Health scares make you realize what’s important and that’s family and time. It’ll be a big transition here and I have to move my schedule around so I’ll be up doing the birds at 4am instead of 6am… but that’s why god invented naps. The neighbor is being a shitbag and I’m going to have to escalate. Wife called the cops because they were ”repairing” a garage and burning (almost certainly) boards covered in lead paint creating a noxious cloud of black smoke in the yard and setting the birds off. Now it’s going to be a whole deal when they do something retaliatory. Why do people have to suck? One of the many reasons why everyone should have acres and acres between them and the nearest neighbors.
>>2787144Dang. 4am is rough. I’ve been having to get up at 6:30 to play bus driver and have been hating it. I won’t complain anymore. Sorry to hear about the neighbors being dicks. Life would be so much easier if people could just be nice. I agree about the acreage. It could be worse though. You could be with me in HOA hell where I got a second notice because my tree wasn’t trimmed as much as they deemed necessary. Perhaps be more specific next time assholes and acknowledge that I did trim a lot rather than say I did nothing. Would love an enough acreage to be in the middle and not see neighbors. Hope your situation improves soon anon. Tell Rudy I said hello.
>>2778664Nigga who give a shit stop spamming the board and post it on /an/
>>2787234Been talking bout Rudy for a while now faggot, it’s been covered how a duck is /out/ don’t you have a load of laundry to do?
