>How do I convince my parents to let me do cool outdoorsy thingsHi there. I currently live at home (Maritime Canada) with my parents and it's causing some problems. I want to do cool stuff like hiking, solo camping and such, but my parents are very recent third-world immigrants. They're convinced that I'm going to get mauled by a wild animal if I go for a walk in even the safest forest. They claim I don't know enough about the terrain and area even though I took outdoor education in high school and have been on 3 camping trips as a child.I think the only way to convince them would be to show that I objectively do have the knowledge required. I've been reading prep and wilderness safety books, which I think might be enough to convince them. I'm aware experience is the best teacher, but it feels like this is the first step to getting experience. Most of the people I know are kind of trashy hicks who only enjoy ATVing and shit so I can't ask them to take me.Does anyone else have any experience similar to mine? And what other resources would you recommend I look into? I'm tired of being cooped up and bored.
I wish I was able to just get up and go fuck off into the wilderness. They're Idea of a good time is being cooped up on a Carnival cruise with hordes of Latinos and Blacks.
>>2785858I'm Chinese. Answer my questions and I'll let you have sex with my sister.
>>2785856This is where I'm going to cycle this summer. I don't care what any one says. I will make it happen.
>>2785856Maybe if you went with a group of people they'd feel better about it?
>>2785856You must be 18 to post on this site.
>>2785856hello fellow maritimer here. the answer is just do it anyway?sorry but the real answer here is cultural, chinese guys listen to much to their parents and it shows everytime I meet a chinese guy its like they were their parents bitch and lack some serious maturityhowever, you're parents aren't entirely wrong. reading books and watching youtube won't prepare you.. and cycling through Gaspésie? the interior is basically uninhabited and sorry yeah, you will die.why don't you start with a small park or something. its not the animals that'll kill you its spraining your ankle in the middle of fucking nowhere. just do some ultralight camping somewhere safe-ishalso there aren't really that many true wilderness areas left in the maritimes soo idk where you'd want to go
>>2785877I'm 23>>2785881> and cycling through Gaspésie?Would the coastline be safer? I think I will start by staying overnight at a local campground. Hopefully, I can find a friend to do extended trips with.>also there aren't really that many true wilderness areas left in the MaritimesI just want to be outside. It's hard to get across just how cooped up my family likes to be. We barely leave the home.
>>2785886you just don't seem to have a firm grasp of the reality of something like cycling the coast of gaspésie would actually be like. You'd be insanely exposed to elements and also not protected from vehicular traffic. There's a map somewhere of cyclable roads throuhgout canada but idk where it is. One cannot simply just bike on the shoulder of a highway. not only that but most of that land will be owned. you can't just pop over to the wilderness for a good nights sleep. That kind of unhinhabited wildeneress is only practicably accessible by car idk man, you're doing the /out/ equivalent of a mormon hardliner who goes to vegas and does coke and hookers til he dies. Start small. Hell, just start with a fishing rod (obey laws)id be your outdoor fren but i moved away from the maritimes
There aren't any dangerous animals in the maritimes other than humans. Nothing poisonous, only pussy black bears, no moose or wolves (despite military psyops pretending there are). They don't even have as many mosquitoes and blackflies as the interior does. The terrain isn't that wild either, it's basically Scotland. How do you move to a country with zero knowledge of the local environment?
>>2785856General thoughts from a non-Canadian:Volunteer (or seek employment) with search and rescue or wilderness medicine groups, there might be regional organizations that will train you for free. You can probably find some paid survival courses since Canada is the land of Mors Kochanski and Les Stroud. If you have money you might be able to find some meme programs that give college credits; in the US we have NOLS, but I don't know if there's anything similar up there. >>2785893>How do you move to a country with zero knowledge of the local environment? They sound like urbanites. Our regional urbanites generally don't learn about the local environment either.
>>2785897>Volunteer (or seek employment) with search and rescue or wilderness medicine groupsHmm. This seems promising. Doesn't seem like there's anything in my direct area, but I'll look around. Thanks.
>>2785856you can convince them by going back to the country you came from
>>2785899https://primordialskills.com/I'm not sure I'd be able to commit to a volunteer organization. But, it seems like they've got a few outdoor education programs across the border. Would I be getting scammed if I signed up for something like this. https://primordialskills.com/
>>2785893he could be in northern new brunswick which is a bit more wild and hardly like scotland (swampy), but its unlikely an immigrant would move there because its rust-belt tier. and there are definitely moose in new brunswick. His fascination with gaspésie makes me think hes in new brunswick
>>2785901>I'm not sure I'd be able to commit to a volunteer organizationWhy not? Work schedule?>Would I be getting scammed if I signed up for something like this.I don't know anything about that particular program but there are good programs out there. How far are you willing to travel, how much money do you feel like burning, and what exactly are you looking to get out of the experience?
>>2785901>I'm not sure I'd be able to commit to a volunteer organizationYou could still take a wilderness first aid course and pay for it yourself, which might help alleviate your parents' concerns about your ability to take care of yourself and would give you the chance to people who know the local /out/ credential scene better. Also worth mentioning that hiking clubs and that sort of thing exist.
>>2785856u a grown man nigga just go
You are required to be 18 to post on this website and at age 18 you don't have to listen to your parents anymore.
>>2785897>Volunteer (or seek employment)There are no jobs in the Maritimes. He has to go to Toronto. They have jobs, girls, and everything.
