Recently bought a carinthia gore-tex bivvy, tried using it just indoors for the first time on a carpet. But for the life of me, I could not fall asleep. My back and shoulders were in a constant state of needing to be popped (its hard to explain) and more importantly, I couldn't really fucking breathe inside the bivvy. I was laying in it with my head as close to the small opening at the top as possible but it still just felt like I was breathing in my own expelled air over and over again. Only violently moving my legs around seemed to pump fresh cold air inside the bag which gave me some comfort for like a whole 2 seconds before going back to breathing in my own air. Opening the zip up further helped only a little bit, but it still wasn't good enough to actually fall asleep for me. Opening it up any further and I might aswell just sleep with just a blanket on me, kinda defeats the whole point of having a waterproof bivvy.

Am I using it wrong?

Bubba you're sleeping on a carpet. Get a mat made for sleeping.
>Breathing
In normal conditions you leave the bivouac sack open with your nose and mouth near the opening, you can close the mosquito net if required.
Carinthia bags are permeable to air so you won't choke in them, it would still be uncomfortable and increase condensation obiously.
>Am I using it wrong?
How the fuck can you mess up laying in a sack?

yeah, thats what I was doing the entire time, didnt you read the post? No air was really getting in, moving my legs around caused fresh air to get sucked in but obviously I cant autistically spazz my legs around and expect to fall asleep.
>you can close the mosquito net if required.
there aint a mosquito net on this model unfortunately. picrel

HAHAHAHAHA YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO KEEP YOUR HEAD OUT OF THAT ONE BUBBA hahahahah.
In case of hard rain you turn on the right side or on your belly while keeping it open a crack, ask any germ pig that did their service or look on Youtube and they'll give you a better explanation.
No idea if that model is "breath through", even if it were don't expect a complete lack of impediment.
A bivouac sack is made for rough and tough big boys usage, don't expect any comfort, especially not without a tarp.

>>

>why should i watch out for second hand membrane gear?
Obviously look to get an unissued or lightly used serviceable piece instead of a delaminated one at the end of its life.
>>2785980
If you don't have a hooped sack you're best keeping mouth and nose out to avoid condensation, that's the same reason you don't breath in your sleeping bag.
>>
>>2785981
mine seems to be in alright shape, no punctures or visible abrasions. However, the DWR is iffy, water gets soaked in the outer membrane in some places after some time. I read somewhere that just putting it in the dryer at around 60 °C for 20 minutes is enough to somehow fix this. Is this true?
>>
>>2785987
Doubt it. I recommend you do some reading online, there are specific products for DWR. It might also be dirty.
Bear in mind durable water repellent treatment only makes the surface water repellent to a relatively minor degree, it doesn't prevent soaking on its own.
Try spraying a light mist of water over it, if it forms round droplets that are easily moved around then it's still water repellent.

I *have* done some reading online. picrel is from gore tex themselves.
I just hope that when I use it in actual hours long of persistent rainy weather only and only the outer layer gets soaked.
>>
>>2785995
Yes, I've read that on wikipedia as well. I'm reticent to heat up synthetics, especially if laminated.

I'm in the army and sleep in a bivvy. they just suck imo. i have the same issue you do wear it feels like im going to suffocate inside the thing. keeping your head outside the bivvy isnt really an option, in my experience cold air will blow down the bivy if the top is open. i usually try to just leave a tiny opening to stick my nose and breathe through if theres no tent to be in.
>>
>>2786063
then how did this guy do it? motherfucker raw dogged it every night with just the bivvy and sleeping bad and a fucking piece of cardboard lmao.
>>
>>2785947

i'm not sure what you expected with that type of bivvy anon.

checkout picrel. it's very comfortable.

Only the special-commando ketogenic proactive energetic sporty stoic pneumatic big boys are worthy of bivouac sacks, feeble 4chud bubbas are stuck with unventilated tents and (homeless) smelly shelters.

>dont have to stick my head out

>the excitement doesn't let me fall asleep
>1 hour passes
>a bit too many sticks and leaves cracking and russling for my comfort

>definitely not terrified
>last time I was at this spot to clear my head there was some Polish junkie drinking beer and talking to himself
>intrusive thoughts get louder
>even more weird crackling noises
>adrenaline
>now I DEFINITELY cant fall asleep
>this goes on for 5 minutes
>fuck this, there HAS to be someone nearby right?
>get up and pack my shit
>noone around
>mfw I say fuck it and just go home

my fucking schizo thoughts prevented me from falling asleep, sick.
I suppose I could've obviously picked a better spot that wasn't a hotspot for polish junkies. but damn.

Thoughts about what exactly?
You're better off with a sleeping bag than blankets.
>>
>>2786332
>You're better off with a sleeping bag than blankets.
I absolutely agree, theyre much better. I didnt have one however, thats why.

>Thoughts about what exactly?
on my little schizophrenic escapade that ultimately led to me failing to fall asleep. I.e., how do you and other anons manage to fall asleep at night in, I guess, sketchy areas. Or just with sketchy sounds that freak you out. Or do they even freaky you out? Etc. etc.

did you actually just zip yourself up into a waterproof body bag then complain you couldn't breathe?
Just to give some info about bivvys; mine is a gore-tex one too but it is british army surplus cost about £20, has a draw-string opening at the top and enough room to fit a pack inside as well, with the draw string fully pulled tight, it leaves an opening about 2 inches wide, enough to get some fresh air, I have weathered a storm in it.
>>2786067
iirc he had a heavy duty sleeping bag with a lot of padding and if you are a light little twink you are more comfortable at night because your body weighs less and so puts less pressure on bony bits.
>>2786334
>how do you and other anons manage to fall asleep at night in, I guess, sketchy areas.
be very hidden or don't sleep in sketchy areas.
>Or just with sketchy sounds that freak you out.
keep my axe at hand
>Or do they even freaky you out?
yes but i mostly just rationalize them, they are usually mice or falling leaves, one time i kept hearing this weird thump, it was sheep headbutting each other in the middle of the night. worst was when an owl with a sore throat landed right on my ridge line and let out the most raucous horrific hoot I have ever heard in my life, like 2 feet away from me at about 2am. got up and walked around a bit to calm my nerves.

at what point did i say that? I sleep outside no different than at home. anon was asking specifically about sketchy areas, or if you hear shit at night, if you hear weird noises at night and it doesn't trigger some kind of reaction you have no sense of self preservation and would have been removed from the food chain in natural circumstances.
also this is a fucking anime website, if you don't like it, may i suggest facebook? or twitter?

Bubba you got scared by an owl, no wonder you watch trannyme KEK. That's a sign of low testosterone.
You are far safer anywhere outside of inhabited areas unless you have bears nearby.
When I go out, I'm the most dangerous thing anyone else can stumble upon.

he just had the regular MSS system; the bivvy and the intermediate or jungle bag, one of the two. Anyway, what do you mean by "if youre a light little twink"? are you insinuating he was one?
>be very hidden or don't sleep in sketchy areas.
thats fair, but how do you know beforehand if its a sketchy area. My case is a bad example of this because I happened to know beforehand that it was sketchy but obviously youre almost never gonna know. I guess my question then becomes; how you properly stealth-camp in unknown areas.
>keep my axe at hand
i live in a cuckold country and that isnt allowed.

Your local dog-shitting park isn't outdoors, aywhere frequented by people is "sketchy".
>hes baiting you and is in dire need of counseling and professional help
You wouldn't know baiting if it fucked you in the ass. I don't mind beginners but you have to pull your head out of your ass and make an effort for yourself, or did your cuck country also ban Youtube tutorials?
You should have spent your hundred on a half-decent sleeping bag, you don't need a bivouac sack. Anyway, get a cheap one from Decathlon and a foam mattress, the folding type packs better than the roll, wait for the summer and that's it.
You can watch some tutorials on stealth camps and how to select a suitable spot.

If that is how you deal with people that take time out of their day to help you being less of an embarrassing moron the fuck are you doing here?
Early on you can use a clear plastic tarp, a grommeted tarp of the type for covering firewood or your poncho.
You're an uneducable retard and will stay as such no matter what you do. Now go to bed and think about this life lesson.
