To use amateur radio frequencies you have to be licensed, however in an emergency involving threat to life you can use said frequencies to request help. There were a number of people who did this shortly after Helene hit NC.If you going out into the wild I would recommend something like a Garmin InReach over an amateur radio.

I live in Taiwan and my wife and I work at around 30km of each other in Taipei. Is it too far for a radio ? I was really concerned during the last earthquake to not know if my wife was injured and would like to set up a simple communication system now. Could be used in case the mainlanders try to invade too

Less than a mile if it's a heavily built up area. >>2787867The range you'll get on something like a Baofeng is very dependent on your terrain and what obstructions are in your way. If you're both up on the roof of a couple of tower blocks with nothing else in the way then you could do 30km (or well over that), easy. If she's in a concrete emergency shelter then you could be in the building next door and probably not pick up shit. If you've got a repeater station in your area then you both just need to have line of sight to that.They're still definitely worth buying though. Even the sub-1 mile range you'd get in a heavily built up area is a massive advantage over the option of 'shout loudly and wave your arms'. Being able to communicate from, say, your car parked on the street outside is a lot better than having to search through every individual room of the building. If you get to your pre-planned rendezvous point and find it's collapsed or flooded or otherwise innaccessible, then you'll be able to assume you're both standing around pretty close in roughly the same area but a pair of radios would make finding one another much easier.My wife and I have a Baofeng in each of our cars, another at home and another at my mom's place for this sort of scenario. Why don't more people just put a backup phone/ battery in a hard case with a signal booster?Mobile range extends a long way these days, I believe must mobile pick up satellite GPS even if outside mobile range, users are familiar with them, and I believe search and rescue can comb for mobile distress signals from helicopter. Is there a specific procedure for use of a domestic mobile phone as a distress beacon if outside mobile range?
