Looking to do a week in New Mexico in December. What’s my best bet? Never been to the state before. What is the backpacking scene like in December in the land of enchantment?
>>

probably cold af

The state is at high elevation

Are you a winter camper?
>>
The best backpacking is in the North. Think outside of Santa Fe in the Sangre de Cristo mountains. Look into lake Katherine/ Stewart Lake, etc. Taos has some good areas too. Beautiful areas. It will undoubtedly be snowy and cold, though not nearly as much as Utah or Colorado. Hope you enjoy winter camping.

unless >>2789139 OP is gonna freeze to death

Is there any part of nm that is warm in the winter?
>>
>>2789300
yeah I've only ever been through there once on a roadtrip but I believe you
what I'm saying is even if it wasn't OP clearly has no idea how unexpectedly cold almost anywhere out west can get with little warning
>>
>>2789301
yeah it's called Arizona
And not even all of that kek

I’m comparing to nearby Western states, but yes. New Mexico is still in the West and it gets cold af out here in the winter. OP should be well experienced with winter camping to enjoy any time out here. Also, important note, because it doesn’t snow as much here as other places we aren’t well equipped for it. Roads to the outdoors and trails and good spots will often close in the winter. Come out and enjoy some good (and relatively cheap) skiing instead. Will be way more fun.

New Mexico has the oldest and one of the largest wilderness areas in the Gila and you're going to tell me some other part of the state filled with people from aq and sf is better?
>>2789301
There is plenty of low desert around 3-4k ft that stays mild
>>2788823
The best answers for your time of year are Carlsbad and low stuff around Guadalupes, organ mountains/Franklin mountains, or white sands and the valley of fires. It is not the best time to visit any of these places, regardless of temps, no bats in carlsbad, no bloom in the mountains.

Pretty sure that's where the ClA does all the human trafficking and drug trafficking through to mexico. Considering it went blue during the election that's a pretty good sign it's loaded with corruption because all the beaners voted red this year--the people I meet that hate illegal immigrants the most are the legal immigrants.
