Buck season is officially open in Pennsylvania. Can /out/ share some of your hunting views? Don't know much about season times in other states.
>>
I've always wanted to go hunting but I've never been so I don't know how to go about it
I also don't know any hunters
>>
>>2791509
hunting is unfortunately out of my financial reach atm (and for the foreseeable future) its ridiculously expensive here and you cant even get half the goodies Americans can get their hands on, would love to get into it some day, mostly shotgun for pigeons because i love eating them
>>
>>2791513
you can hunt pigeons with a slingshot if you want
>>
>>2791509
If you truly wish to, you have access to a great resource: the internet. Many states also have programs to help you learn about hunting. I'm fortunate enough to have a father that taught me, and provides me with my gear and firearms. It feels great hiking up mountains for hunting. Just remember to bundle up since you'll be sitting still for a long time.
(Delayed response = having to wait 15 mins to confirm I'm human *eyeroll*)
>>
>>2791514
would definitely have to go out into the country, pigeons even close to a medium sized city are gross as fuck, but you are completely right, used to shoot them often with my air rifle for my neighbor but they haven't nested in his chimney in a few years so i guess they learned

I took a picture of some Black Bear scat I found in my vehicle parking area in Appalachia.
I never have a camera handy when I see the bears and deer.

I'm new to hunting... is there any chance I find pheasant and/or grouse in an area like this or am I just wasting my time?
>>
>>2793161
>just wasting my time?
You need to find out if they are commonly found in the area to begin with- do people around you actively hunt them there? know before you go
>>
Are there any intensive laws and regulations on hunting squirrel like there are deer?
>>
>>2793243
almost never but you are always responsible to check your local dnr regs just in case you have a rare squirrel bred in your area or something
>>
>>2791669
based fellow crow hunter chad
almost no one does it for some reason

Most states have squirrel season, but you can hunt them in private land and farms if they qualify as pests, like nut farms, walnut farms and orchards, you can get permission from the owner to "remove" them and they might even pay you a bit of chump change per head or to just take out as many as you can.
Squirrels will fuck a peach tree farmers shit up so most landowners I ask are happy that I came along asking permission to kill to eat.
They also make great practice for inexperienced hunters in gutting, skinning and field dressing small mammals.

I thought you didn't eat them because they're scavengers.
>>
>>2793161
Grouse live in deep forests. But there are other eatable birds that love that grass
>>
I live in the Rocky Mountains but all the rules/regulations/permits/processing just never appealed to me to pursue it. I enjoy tracking though

they are not exclusively carrion feeders but they do so opportunistically
but I do not care

>>

Totally skunked here in Maine despite consecutive years of success. Warm year + tons of acorns on the ground is my cope for them not coming through 6 of my spots. Oddly enough, 5 other guys I know missed shots and two had misfires with their rifles - crazy...To further cope I booked a hunt down at a farm in Mass with a guide. Apparently there are tons of deer running through farms that need to be culled. Has relationships with the farmers to have tree stands and clients come through.

Need meat in the freezer.

is the traditions nitrofire the best option for hunting with a muzzle loader? going for white tail within 150yards so mild rain and snow in the late season
>>
>>2794752
Any will do. I have been using a CVA Wolf for years to great effect. They are simple contraptions and all will be serviceable within the range you describe.

I'm going hunting for the first time this year. I'll be alone and trying to teach myself here. Rabbit season goes thru March in my state so that's what I'm starting with. Using a shitty .22lr since it's the only gun I can afford right now.
Any sort of advice on any aspect of hunting (preparation, finding the game, field dressing, etc.) would be greatly appreciated. I've done a lot of research and preparation but know there is a lot that more experienced hunters will know that I don't.
>>
>>2797135
It's laser engraved slop. Looks tacky.
>>
>>2798144
What's there to know? You shoot the thing, preferably in the head/neck as to spoil little meat and then eviscerate it either with a knife or by tearing the thin abdominal muscles open and removing the guts and lungs. The liver and heart are nice to eat. It really doesn't matter. And a .22 is perfect. You could have literally asked ChatGPT all this and got the same answer instead of exposing yourself to ridicule on here where anons will make fun of you for obviously not having a father.
>>
went to my local hunting club last night because they had an open house to shoot bow and arrows.

dude teaching me was cool as fuck and was teaching me how to shoot since it was my first time and managed to get a couple bullseyes at 100m (leaf fag.) Was cool until I had like six 50 year old hunter guys standing behind me nit picking every single thing I was doing down to the autistic millimeter when I was doing just fine. all in all i learned a lot and listened to them and thought they had some good advice

are any of you guys a part of a club? do any of you shoot bows? thinking of maybe picking one up and doing some small game hunting

I just got my lisence to hunt in Norway a year ago,Spent most of the early aumtumn hunting pidgeons. There hasent been much clayshooting since october, so I wanted to break out the shotgun and hunt what was availiable. The landowner said I could hunt whatever squirrels and foxes I could find while they're in season. only saw a hare, and didnt know if I had permission form landowner to shoot it, and I felt the us2 shot I had for fox would be too big, and us6 for squirrels to small, so let it pass

Is hunting in US generally dangerous for hunters themselves? In my country (Serbia), there's a stereotype that hunters are drunk, fat, low class middle aged men with trigger fingers who often shoot each other. That's the main reason why i'm reluctant to get into hunting. Shooting some invasive jackal pests would be kino
>>
So does everyone in this thread just shoot living creatures? You wait for them and then kill them in cold blood, and boast about it?
>>
>>2800190
I wouldn't go on public land unless you're with a guide in some remote ass area.

A former friend had a story he was set up in a tree stand and some asshole set up a blind right next to him.
So my buddy started spitting chew spit at him from above, and the other hunter started mouthing off he's been huntin this area for decades.
I forget what happened, but it's something that can go bad quickly.

An uncle said his friends got robbed when it was still dark in the morning they were getting ready to go inawoods near a popular trailhead.
Some other "hunters" pulled their guns on them and robbed them.
>>
I've never been hunting but I'm planning to get into it. Ideally, I'd start this fall. I've been doing some research on the internet so I have a lot of the tangible information down, but I feel like I need more insider information to really get it.

How much should I just 'take a swing at it' versus needing really precise plans for everything? Should I just try my best at skinning and chopping up a deer or there some horrible thing that could happen if I fuck it up that I don't know about? How sensible and acceptable is it to just set up a nice spot on the ground and hope a deer comes by, rather than getting a tree stand or something more complicated?
>>
Got my first woodcock on a guided hunt a few days ago. I'm definitely gonna be a lifelong upland hunter. Way more fun than anything else I've done. May get a dog in a year or 2 if I can do the research on training.
>>
>>2800362
I would at least scout the areas that you could possibly hunt before making any big purchases. I would get a decent set of binoculars before a tree stand. Also if you know any friends or family with land that holds animals try to get permission there. Public land is usually very pressured and competitive, other hunters will try to frustrate your efforts and make you quit the spot so they can have it to themselves, especially when it comes to big game like deer.
>>
>>2801699
>>2801740
Is a guided hunt a good idea for a first time? You pay some guy to take you on a curated thing?
>>
>>2801750
Can be a good option if your starting with zero experience. Think of it like paying for a class and ask plenty of questions. I've done that when fishing for a new species in a new place. See how they do it and try to replicate it on your own.
>>
>>2801750
its nice to turn off your brain and just follow someone innawoods, not all the time, and not if they talk the whole damn time and make cheesy corny forced jokes a lot, but if you get the right person, it can be nice
its amazing the human ability to simply follow a path anywhere in the woods without really having to think about it except for technical bits
>>
>>2800167
Nice, you work up in the forestry in Alberta? Only place I know of that has wild horses outside sable island.
