Iodine is good in a nuke emergency. It can also pull double duty as a substitute for an iodine pill. You can do it with bleach as well. It's about as healthy as drinking out of a swimming pool every day. But you're not going to do it every day. Just in an emergency when boiling is impractical. You can get away with it once in awhile, just like you can get away with drinking water with iodine in it now and again. In clear water add 8 drops to a gallon. If it's cloudy or murky, double it.
