If you had 250k saved up and wanted to take the Kaczynski pill, where would you end up?
>>
I recently moved to Cascadia and have been loving it but I'd be hard pressed to go off grid with 250k. I accept I'll never be able to fully take the tedpill because I have family members that need me to take care of them. I'm happy to try and get as off grid as I can while still fulfilling my obligations, though.

Your money will probably go farthest in the Appalachians or Ozarks. Environment/climate is forgiving, resources are available, and homesteading is feasible.

The amount is arbitrary, but I figure that would be a good hypothetical minimum for one person to live off of for 15-20 years, provided they owned their own land and home/cabin, and lived a self-sufficient lifestyle, such as growing most of their food and using renewable energy sources. Hell, you could park it in some fund that earns you a modest 5-7% ROI that nets you about 13-15k per year after taxes. Which I could see as being enough money to cover the miscellaneous expenses like property tax, parts & tools for repair, gas/propane, ammo, luxury food items, some clothing, etc.

In the long run, heating with wood should be cheaper. But the upfront cost of getting a sizable woodlot can eat up most if not all of that money depending on where you are. You're right though, that's all in all a reasonable plan.

Probably wherever the majority of Amish/Mennonites are moving. I'd say they know a thing or two about that life. Pennsylvania down to Kentucky. Good growing season, no huge cities, little government presence.
