What winter /out/ hobbies don't cost an arm and a leg to do?

Skiing and snowboarding seem like a rich person's hobby.
Mountaineering requires actual gear.

Is Snowshoeing the only real option?
>>
>>2796179
All of them can be done cheaply thanks to the gearfags who buy new equipment, use it once, and donate it to a thrift store.

my snow shoes - $8
my compound hunting bow - $8
>>
I like monitoring atmospheric preasure and predictions
But I am need, so...
>>
>>2796181
>compound hunting bow
>$8
no
>>
>>2796181
Gear really is only one part of the issue with skiing or snowboarding. Unless your giving a resort owner blowjobs for free day passes those suckers charge like $200-300 a day
>>
>>2796185
Yes. ShopGoodwill has tons of them and usually zero bids.
>>
>>2796186
Just go in the mountains and camp.
>>
>>2796186
Those without time preference and planning skills buy lift tickets at the window. You can buy a pass for $600 in the summer and have it charged in 4 installments. Basically everyone who pays that much money for a lift ticket chooses to.
>>
>>2796186
Be a lifty, problem solved.
>>
>>2796193
>just pay $600 for the privilege to sit on the lift
Not making your case here man. I can go snowshoe the white mountains or the rocky's for free.
>>
>>2796179
>Is Snowshoeing the only real option?
Skiing just requires you buy the gear, which you get to use for years/decades. Downhill is the expensive variant because the gear is more expensive, and your ticket costs a hundred bux a day.
>>
>>2796196
>$600 for unlimited lift rides over the course of 100+ days*
Sounds pretty cheap to me, tyrone.
>>
>>2796198
it still feels like I'd have to go 10x times for it to feel worth it to me. it pays off in like 3 or 4 trips but that's from the absolute ripoff price. and 10 times is a lot, I'm not that into it, getting there is a pain, don't have friends to go with etc
I go snowboarding like once a year to the mini mountain at loveland that costs $50. since I only go once a year I still fucking suck even on that easy hill and I always fall and go home feeling like shit and like I've done more than enough snowboarding for the year
>>
>>2796200
If you want to ski that much typically you get a job on the hill ala >>2796195
>>
>>2796195
>get up early as fuck
>drive an hour in the dark and cold up the mountain
>spend an hour setting up the lift lines in the freezing ass dark
>stand in one spot and watch retards fail to ride the lift for 8 hours

fuck that
>>
>>2796202
>>drive an hour
This thread is for /out/ people, sorry.
>>
>>2796215
Nobody going to actual ski resorts is camping out retard. It's not even allowed in majority of resorts.
>>
>>2796215
Post Google map to your nearest ski resort then, shitnuts
Even if you live right next to the mountain it takes time driving around those shitty roads
Fuck you, assblood
>>
>>2796179
Skis aren’t cheap but you don’t have to pay to use them…either alpine or Nordic is free when you do it in the woods
>>
>>2796179
Sliding snowshoes and BC skis are generally cheaper in terms of boots, skis and bindings and you're not bound by lifts.
>>
>>2796186
>it's only possible to ski at a resort
>skiing wasn't even invented until after the invention of the ski lift
the absolute state
>>
>>2796186
Protip: You can walk up a mountain and then ski down. You don't have to pay for a lift ticket.
>>
>>2797020
I'm too fat and lazy to do that though.
>>
>>2796186
>a day
nigga what the fuck are you doing
your epic pass? your ikon pass?
>>
>>2796179
Nigga like just go for a walk
>>
>>2797020
This has been banned at some ski areas

While not "cheap", snowmobiling doesn't have to be crazy expensive either.
Find a used sled for $3k or so
Ramp for a pickup, or small open trailer behind an suv
outerwear, gear, helmet
Fuel/oil for the sled isn't terrible, fuel for the car you'd be spending anyways going to ski areas
Sled registration's pretty cheap ($20-50/year)

Beats the shit out of snowshoeing, and you don't have to deal with lifts/ski areas.
>>
>>2797074
You don't have to go to a ski area. You can ski any mountain you want.
>>
>>2797074
Name one.
>>
>>2797068
Or go to a smaller mountain and actually ride for cheap
>>
>>2797092
Maybe pre-COVID but now? Not anymore.
>>
>>2797081
jackson hole
>>
>>2797190
Nobody on this board can afford to ski at Jackson Hole.
>>
>>2797074
my local hill only allows it during the off season which makes sense...but its killer when it dumps 3ft the day after it closes.
