is the age of down finally over?
primaloft thermoplume jackets are half the price with near identical weight to warmth as down. and it works better when wet/damp.
packability is the hill which down will die on.

Don't care about down/synthetic
But I can't stand this type of loud rustling/easily tearing on tree branches/immediately burning through on sparks/grocery bag looking outer material
Much prefer tougher outer material, pic related

Parka in question is Patagonia
But that Fjällräven beanie is actually nice. Yeah, yeah, overpriced and chink made, I know. But It's sewn in a way that it covers ears, which majority of beanies don't

cheap down is way worse than synthetic.
cheap down products use low quality goose down which absorbs moisture from the air. become useless in damp conditions. plus the down is packed in badly, causing cold spots and shedding.
>>
>>2796339
All down absorbs water if not siliconated.
Have you tried the Decathlon ones? I can only find good reviews.
>>
>>2796343
certain downs have hydrophobic qualities.
yes they will abord water eventually but they wont absord moisture from the air like cheap down will.

More of you're already on fire so hot food shouldn't bother you. Plastic in the food and air is infinitely worse than plastic on your body. Because the internal stuff gets metabolized.

Synthetic breaks down after a few years, especially with packing&unpacking.
Downchads win yet again.
>>
>>2796339
The Decathlon jacket in question uses duck down instead of goose down. It has basically the same thermal to weight properties but is cheaper to buy. Gear snobs all want goose down which keeps the price inflated on those items.

You seem to be intellectually challenged yourself my man if you don't understand a simple greentext comparison. Not one that I agree with because >>2796382 but still.
>>
>>2796490
Oh it's supposed to be an analogy. A terribly chosen one when it literally responds to a post about food, but still. I guess I'm just too white and high IQ to need such a kindergarten tier strawman to understand what microplastics are.

>I guess I'm just too white and high IQ to understand
Sure you are buddy.
>>
>>2796466
the poster attempted to make an analogy based off 'setting urself of fire is bad' but forgot to consider that the analogical equivalent is eating your waterproof jacket
>>
>>2796223
while I completely agree and prefer synthetic insulations over down for all my outdoor activities. As that one anon said, even the most durable synthetic insulation on the market (monofilament continuous sheet insulators like primaloft/climashield/coreloft) are susceptible to significant performance loss from constant packing and squishing. A down jacket will retain its loft for decades if taken care of and the construction of the garment prohibits loss of down through its seams.
>>
Jesus fuck these retards are actually arguing that you should immerse yourself in microplastics at all moments of your life just because plastic exists.
You are exactly why plastic is in everything you complete and utter failure.
>>
>>2796679
>t. has never gone outside in sub-0 weather before
Doubt you even step a foot into the woods in winter at all.
>>
>>2796679
>immerse yourself in microplastics
Again you are not actually saying anything. You are a histrionic Dunning Krugertard with the mind of a woman throwing shit and seeing if something sticks. Garments made of synthetics are not microplastic. They further aren‘t absorbed into the skin nor metabolised. Again, nothing but the histrionic screeching of a tranny afraid of becoming a tranny.
>>
>>2796679
>why plastic is in everything you complete and utter failure.
It's in everything because subhuman shitjeets and chinks from the turd world are throwing PET bottles and flip flops and barbie dolls in the ocean you cretinous retard

>swedistan flag on the back

>>
>>2796727
Synthetic garments certainly do shed microplastics. Which are potentially absorbed into the body through breathing.
Of course, so do tires and plastic carpets, at a much greater rate. Not to mention all the microplastics eaten by people who eat food that was in plastic containers (which is basically everyone and possibly even those who try to avoid it because it was in plastic containers during the production process at some point). Also you can avoid the microplastics from clothes by only wearing them outdoors, where it harmlessly blows away.

>>
>>2796752
You know as well as I do that I'm white.
>>
>>2796754
Yes, yes of course you are, Sukhdeep! And mankind has a microplastics problem because a handful of white people in the first world wear technical clothing in winter, NOT because your 3 billion cousins dump a landfill's worth of plastic into the Ganges and Yangtse every 5 minutes.
>>
>>2796755
Marine animals have a microplastics problem because brown people throw plastic into the oceans. White people have a microplastics problem because they drive plastic tires, eat from plastic containers, live in rooms with plastic carpets, wear plastic clothing. And, as the least of all reasons, because they eat fish that contains microplastics originating from brown people.
>>
>>2796223

I'll stick to wool and cotton, xir.
>>
>>2796806
Ah yes, cotton: the shittiest material for anything outdoor related as it absorbs and retains 100% of moisture. It's also funny how you brown shitjeets deflect and seethe at this one specific post because it mentions you roaches. Like flies to a fresh heap of shit. You will never be human.
>>

>>
>>2796275
I don't drink water. Do oranges have detectable levels of plastic in their juice?
>>
>>2796809
Cotton can make for an excellent shell.
>>
>>2796861
I've never seen orange juice sold in anything but plastic containers. So, yes.
If you make it first hand... you get the microplastic that the plant absorbed during growth. No idea how much that is. It's probably less than in ground water though, which is very well filtered.
>>
>>2796898
Only if it's waxed, otherwise it's fucking shit.
>>
>>2796916
*more than in the ground water
>>
>>2796917
Gabardine and Ventile are never waxed, in fact waxed cotton is not good for much in sports, other than as country and hunting wear.
In a dry climate any windproof cotton will work as shell, even if not DWR-treated.
>>
>>2796945
Ventile is mediocre for rain protection. Gabardine probably even worse.
>>
>>2796223
for me, it's wool

>>nooo you NEEED to wear my PLASTIC or you'll DIE in 75 degree weather!!!!
This might be crazy to hear for a brown like you, but not everyone lives in a tropical nigger malaria-ridden shithole where it's 25°C all year round.
>>
>>2796947
Depends what you find acceptable, Ventile works by absorbing some water to increase the fiber's volume thus reducing spaces between threads. Gabardine must be less waterproof.
As a fully waterproof garment, light siliconated fabric will be a better choice.
>>2796957
Ventile doesn't require any DWR, neither does gabardine. DWR can be achieved with natural materials as you can see from a few posts up.
Save the shitty greentext.

Either way, during physical exertion a waterproof garment, including a membrane jacket, is counterproductive as it won't allow enough perspiration making the user wet, unlike with a suitable permeable or semipermeable shell which can still be largely water repellent, this is why alpinists use a dedicated ascent jacket which used to be made from either of these fabrics.
As said, in a dry climate, including a constantly frozen one, there is no need for waterproof garments.
Cotton smocks seem to still be fairly popular in such conditions.
