Is digging a hole in the ground an effective way to sleep /out/ ?
>>
Not unless you can burrow like a rabbit.

Was on a trip once where we just got dropped off, at random intervals, mainly a navigation exercise, where we would go on, camp the night, and meet up at X.Y.Z next day.
We were all young, dumb guys, so, the night before, I am with my two buddies, let's call them Whale (not because of size) and army guy

I just set up a standard tarp bivy lean-to, nothing fancy, it was gonna get frosty but no snow or rain, some swans decided the little pond I had set up by would also be where they sleep, noisy fucks.

Alright, head out to find Army guy, has built a completely normal setup too.

Head out to find Whale, we get to him, and motherfucker is basically digging his own grave, like, a person sized hole.
He was paranoid others would seem him, so he wanted to be complete to ground level, camo tarp, sticks on top
Me and army guy slept great, guess who didn't
