Recommend me a varmint cartridge. I'd like to hunt geese mainly, maybe the occasional fox and or raccoon..22 Hornet i have lying around, what bothers me with those is that they have a rim for the use in old school 3 barrelled guns.I am looking for something mag fed, in case the first shot isn't sufficient.
>>2797592There were mag fed 22/17 hornet rifles made like 5-10 years ago, dunno if anyone is still making them. 17wsm is probably what I'd pick up if you don't want to reload ammunition
>>279759217 is the "varmint rifle" caliber.
>>2797592>varmint cartridge>I'd like to huntCorrect me if i am wrong; but "varmint cartridge"s are rounds that rapidly dissentigrate intro tiny shrapnel when they hit their target. And "Hunting" is killing with intent to eat. These 2 things are incompatible.I use picrel, and it works extremly well for liquifying the internals of smallish pest animals like marmots, skunks etc. but you absolutly would not want to eat them after, they are full of tiny lead shrapnel :\
>>2797644Who would eat a marmot or a skunk anyway?
>>2797645Yeh, but op mentioned killing geese and racoon's in the same sentence, which seemed really off to me, you'd never use the exact same round for those 2 animal. But i suppose im just being autistic, and what hes actually asking for is a calibre recommendation, not a recommended loading.
thanks man, any personal experience with that cartridge?>>2797644>>2797646let me clarify:i am looking for a calibre cartridge combination with the intend to buy a rifle in that chambering. egyptian geese was the initial target upon doing research i found that geese and swans are easier to hunt with the bullet as it requirws less preparationa nd setup than the traditional decoy/shotgun/tent combo we do in western europe.i take from anecdotes that chest and legs of the geese are still edible if shot placement is good. the question of the right tip is yet to be elaborated. deforming is preferred over shrapnel.fur hunting would be another use case. so far i shot foxes with .308 deformers and the exit wounds were massive and ruined the pelt.
>>2797650Yes if the intention is to eat, then you want a deforming round. (assuming you arent shooting things out of the sky, which is when you need a shotgun, because firing rifles into the air is dangerous, and hitting airborne targets difficult) I havent tried picrel yet but it looks good for the job of hunting animals, for meat, of about that size, or maybe its just a meme an a hollowpooint would be better idk.If the intention is to exterminate, or to collect a fur/pelt, then varmint, fragmenting, rounds are ideal, they permit a quick kill even with less-than-ideal shot placement, due to the shrapnel, and are good for furs due to them producing little to no exit wound. (because most or all of the round will stop inside the flesh).308 is very excessive for somthing the size of a fox.Sorry for, after my blog, still failing to answer your reques for a non-rimmed round, but i just us a lever action 22mag for target of that size.. it works.
>>2797651>but i just us a lever action 22mag for target of that size..what game on what distances did you (successfully) do?i watched some .17hmr videos and basically it was americans maiming all kinds of animals up to wild boars. There was barely any kill shots, often not even a second corrective shot. Lots of giggling though.>muh yuropean ethicsI was initially attracted by the flat curve of the 17.hmr. It "only" goes up to 800 joule thoughIf i'd go with a stronger charge and heavier bullet, the 17. hornet for example, the curve seems like in most other cartridges in that general category. The scenario i have in mind is 150m shots at geese and swans on large flat plots of land. i am afraid any curve advantage from the 17.hmr would be negated by the wind drift on the light bullet.

>>2797930>the bullet she tells you not to worry about
>>2797592Why not just old good 223 or semi auto 12 gauge?
>>2797938.223 in copper could be a good combo, as the lighter tip flattens the curve a little. also there is a lot of tacticool stuff avaiable in that caliber..12 gauge i got, but i can't organize that whole setup on a regular basis with the decoys, dogs, covers etc.Specially the egyptian goose i have to hunt near settlements, and highways, spontaneously when somebody spots them and i happen to have free time.its generally considered not sportsmanlike to shoot birds when they are sitting. pest control is different though.
