is it really that difficult?

>is it really that difficult?
Yes it is. New boots can be hard to break in.

Obsessing over other people is worse than obsessing over gear. Have you tried minding your own business and not worrying about what those people do?
>>
>>2799686
Idk, I always filter out all the gear threads, I love the outdoors, not gay consoooomerism. Nothing wrong with getting a few tips on equipment but these multi-page long "rate my knife" threads and shit are so retarded and ultimately have nothing to do with actually going outside.
>>
Some of us walk further than a mile beyond the trailhead because we're not fat
>>
>>2799686
because we're living in a consumerist dystopia where people aren't judged by their achievements or experience, but rather what they are willing to spend on posturing for a lifestyle that is reminiscent of those achievements and experiences.
>>
You can get a dopamine rush sitting on the toilet on break at your shitass job researching and buying trekking poles for some grand hiking adventure you'll never have the balls to take time off work for. I have to work hard to remind myself I have enough fishing gear and that when I feel the urge to buy something I really just have the urge to go fishing. I buy new gear then go right back to using the old stuff I love anyways, and the urge leaves me for a few days. It's tough when you can't make time to do the stuff you love.

ever since altra cheaped out, ive bought, tested and returned five different types of boot or trailrunner. ive been through four different trekking pole sets because two broke and my aluminum pair that ive taken on the thrus that ate my last pairs of lone peak 4s just weighs more than they need to. i did a bunch of asking questions here, elsewhere and hiking to test stuff. now, my gear is right at 9 lbs and has already got me through a fall colorado trail hike. am i a gearfag? absolutely. fuck you, op. you've never seen shit but trailheads and day-tripper campsites
>>
Well at least they aren't just watching outdoor videos and making a buy least and telling themselves "one of these days" like me

In a consumerist society, a lot of people's hobby is buying things. Some people find other hobbies which are a route to the same hobby of buying things, e.g. PC gamers/builder who spend ages researching and discussing and buying the latest PC hardware. Or even just buying loot boxes in a game to have more than others.
Or photographers who spend ages on buying the best cameras and lenses but not much time taking pictures.
Or hikers who spend all their time buying gear and no time outside.
...It would disgust Uncle Ted.

I hardly ever buy gear - basically only when I really need something or what I have broke and can't be mended. Used the same boots for years - in fact the first ones I bought, I hiked in them all over the world for more than a decade, only had to get rid of them due to an accident. Used the same coat for more than a decade, etc. You need very little to actually go outdoors.

The last bit of gear I bought proved to be extremely useful though, something I definitely should have bought sooner, but I expect it to last me 15-20 years. I won't say it what it was because I don't want shopping addicts to pursue another dopamine spike in researching it.

Gear is important, I’m one of those fags regularly posting on gear threads.

When I first started being an outist I went outdoors pretty infrequently. I’d go camping with family but never really did any significant outings. I had a hammock, comforter from college and an old army rucksack that I had from my time in military school. It worked great for what it was, but I would often be less comfortable than my friends who backpacked frequently.

when I got more serious into hiking/camping/backpacking I started to realize my gear was heavy/bulky as shit and I slowly started to optimize my set up to be as comfy as possible:

>Replaced yoga mat for closed cell sleeping pad and an inflatable (actually sleep well now outside)
>asked if I could use my brothers old backpacking tent instead of my huge Coleman 4p tent I used in college
>got a proper Kelty backpack (85L because I was retarded and refused to use sleeping bag)
>stopped hiking in jeans and tshirts and instead bought some cheapo hiking gear that kept me cool and dry.
>was a stick fag realized my knees were hiking from not using poles and over exerting myself on mountains.
> got rid of the camp chair and used a closed cell foam mat.
>dropped big bucks and bought a super nice sleeping bag that allows me to sleep in the winter warm and can be used in summer weather if ventilation is opened.
>replaced worn out army boots for proper hiking shoes
>stopped carrying an old pan from my house and bought a small mess kit
> replaced old Nalgened with a bladder

Was it necessary? No not really, I could have continued to use my old set up and all it would have really done is probably made me stronger/less comfortable and slower while hiking.

Now with my current set up I lost pounds I have ergonomic gear that fits my specific needs, I can hike 10-14 miles a day if I get a good pace and am not hungover or some shit. All in all, those gear fag posts genuinely helped me out in finding a decent set up.

It's barely important at all. Your ancestors spent almost all of their time outside with gear much worse than the cheapest products you could buy.
>>
>>2799929
Your ancestors were draped in animal skins/furs, full grain leather and wool. That shit ain't cheap and it's worth every penny.
>>
>>2799908
"Uncle ted" was a literal faggot that had cock willfully inserted in his mouth and arse, for your information.
Kit is functional to the hobby, what we see is the inversion of that, the hobby justifies buying loads of useless crap.
There was a famous south italian immigrant posting here a while ago that was too fat to finish his first hike but was covered head to toe with hundreds of moneys of expensive larp military gear, all that while he didn't have proper footwear kek.
>>
>>2799929
My ancestors probably were happy to stop doing all of that at the first possible chance. This is leisure, it's a hobby.
>>
>>2799921
what you described is a reasonable accumulation of gear though, which nobody really has a problem with. You started with what you had, gained experience with it and learned what works/doesnt work, and incrementally upgraded your kit around that.

>being this obsessed over people buying nice things that you can't afford and going onto a vietnamese basket weaving website to cry about it
Get help dude
>>
>>2799733
Yeah this is a huge part of it. I am stuck inside all day staring at Bad Screen (TM) and all I want to do is go ride bikes or hike or literally anything. But the email machine never ends and pays the bills, so instead I browse gear, watching videos of people doing stuff I want to do, and dream. Sometimes I cry.
>>
why do poor people obsess over things they can't afford
>>
>>2800301
Nobody mentioned affordability. This thread is about people who feel compelled to buy without having a reason to use anything
>>
>>2800380
so shopping addicts?
>>
>>2799686
I do it specifically to flex on you, cry about it
>>
>>2800380
>without having a reason to use anything
Yeah I never use my gear I just leave it all at home when I go outside, wouldn't want it to get dirty, gosh I'm such a shopaholic my whole life is a lie, WHY GOD AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
>>
>>2800423
You're not who this thread is about
>>
>>2800459
It is and it isn't
Did I need a new tent? Nope, I only get to do ~10 overnights a year. My shitty amazon hammock would have worked just fine

But I enjoyed the process of reading reviews at work, picking one out, buying it, and trying it out since I haven't tent camped since I was kid.

For every supposed "UL gearsnob", I see 5 poor anons seething that someone dare has $1k to drop on a hobby in [current year]+13 where the average used car sale is $28k. It's hilariously out of touch in the opposite direction

>ultimately have nothing to do with actually going outside
Who on this board actually goes outside anymore?
>>
>>2799704
You spend hours on the internet debating gear imstead of just being outside.
You're fat.
>>
>>2800466
Again, who on this board actually goes outside anymore? Most of it is gear arguing. The rest is off topic low effort shitposting. This isn't an outdoor board it's a gear board.
>>
>>2800422
He just figured out a way to make himself look cooler than you though. Now it's your turn to cry, gearfag
>>
>>2800468
Idl I'm just here because /r/pol has been nothing but demoralization prop for the past 2 years but I got sucked back into it after Trump's assassination attempt. Trying to get off the internet again but it's so fucking hard when at least 1/3 of my day requires me to be sitting still somewhere boring.
>>
>>2800468
What else would it be?
>attention everyone, I went on a hike today, here are some shitty pictures I took on my phone
>cool
>...
>>
>>2800472
Ya then don't bitch
>>
>>2800463
>poor
Again, this thread never had anything other for with wealth. This is a fascinatingly consistent kind of projection in these threads
>>
>>2799686
Why would a female say this? The entire world knows females are 100% materialistic creatures.
>>
>>2800528
>female
anon...

Climbing pro is the only gear I feel like buying that I don't need. There's something about it, so beautiful and functional.
>maybe will never use a climbing rack again
>get out my old nuts and hexes, rip out the 15 year old dead cord, new cord to restring everything
>buy new slings 'in case' I ever need them
>restring the one cam I've got with dyneema, triple fishermen's
that was satisfying, I could die next week and my old shit will go to somebody that won't get killed by it because I spent 50 dorrar
>>
>>2800528
Yeah I don't get this either. This is something you would say to a woman, not something a woman would ever say.
>>
>>2799686
>is it really that difficult?
For most people, yes it is far to difficult.
>>
>>2799970
>"Uncle ted" was a literal faggot that had cock willfully inserted in his mouth and arse, for your information.
That's false and you're a big faggot for suggesting that.
>>
>>2800819
His words. Sorry I hurt your paternal figure.
>>
>>2799688
>buy hiking boots for like first time ever
>go hiking
>end up with blisters and shit
I'm afraid of wearing them again
>>
>>2799686
my entire life and everything I hold dear and need, birth cert, passports, etc. fits in one backpack. not exaggerating, but I could put on my backpack and just walk off into the sunset and I'll have everything I own in one easy to carry space. I've overdosed on minimalism
