Planning on going backpacking and just making it a lifestyle. I'm 30 and have nothing to show for it. I have no future in society, my family hates me but I have to live in their house, can't find a job, no friends, and I have no interest in living the rest of my life like this. This is no life at all. I want to know everything I need to know and have to start off since this the first time I would do this. I barely have any money but I probably have enough to buy what I need. This is not a vacation though, i'm not going to spend on hotels and restaurants. The idea is to keep moving north and sleeping in a tent.I'm planning to take a bus to get out of the city and then just walk. If I "find" a bike to move faster, i'm taking it. The area i'm going to has a hot climate so no need for winter equipment I would say. If anyone could recommend a book or good yt channel about this it would be appreciated. I still have time to learn all this before I go. I was wondering if to start off it would a good idea to buy a bunch of MRE's? I really don't know how I could acquire food without hunting and I don't have anything to hunt with. Am I naive for thinking I can do this? Is it even possible?
I'll just answer your last two questions. Yes, and No.
>>2802120You're probably right but I still want to give it a try.
>>2802094>I barely have any moneyyou need at least $500 per month in passive income or savings.AT and southern California trails are full of hobos
>>2802094I was wondering if to start off it would a good idea to buy a bunch of MRE's?MRE are fine but very expensive and have lots of junk. you can make your own similar ones for a fraction of the cost.Am I naive for thinking I can do this?yesIs it even possible?sort of, there are homeless people, but there's a good reason for the term "stuck homeless". if your family decides not to help you later what's your plan then? stay homeless forever? turns out most of society doesn't much like people who don't shower and steal other people's stuff. anyway ill leave you with some actual advice - figure out what you want to do with your life that pays a decent wage and pursue that. ill save you the 100s hours of therapy, you can't run away from yourself. no matter where you go, you go with you.
>>2802094I will find you and shit in your tent.
>>2802127Way more than that.
>>2802094This is a big ask Anon. First, you need income. whether thats online work(mechanical turk used to be okay but dried up), or seasonal shit like survey work at market research places(usually hire anybody), or dividends from stocks or ideally a trustfund(lot of trustafarian "travellers"), or some fuckin thing. You can survive off nothing but state income maybe in California, I heard they do like a micro UBI thing for the homeless.Far as gear goes. Ideally, merino wool socks and drawers 3 pair each. One set of layerable clothes that you can change around to look like you have at least two tops and two bottoms which you can mix and match into 4 outfits to fool casual observers of you over time. Catchall cup, lighter, big hygiene kit so you remain presentable, small good quality laptop in a watetproof pouch, good quality synthetic fill compact sleeping bag with warm liner, use cardboard and trash bags as ground pads ponchos and tarps, full size can opener, safelink phone, medicaid onepass or planet fitness gym pass, cheap(usually hispanic owned) or free charity mailbox, and again some form of income because winters up North are cold and summers down South are hot but if you must be stationary. A cheap or free storage unit for records and gear can be handy but super cheap ones aren't always reliable with preventing theft. Bus passes, power scooters, bicycles are all nice. An SUV or van is nice to live in in the cold with a few modifications but insirance and gas require more money and more work. The cloud is your friend for document storage. Gorilla Drives with a 7zip encrypted file containing your shit are smart but they wear out so have redundancies and backup plans for acessing your shit. This is important as shit does break and get lost or stolen. Password protect your phone. Use charities for all they are worth. Don't ever fully trust anybody especially addicts or mentally ill.
>>2802132>I was wondering if to start off it would a good idea to buy a bunch of MRE's?You can buy surplus MREs if you know where to look and they ain't no joke, but at the end of the day if you have a vacuum sealer it's just better to make your own. So much less wasted space you can effectively double your food spacing in your pack.
>>2802094If you've screwed up life on easy mode, what makes you think you'll be successful as a backpacker?
You should take whatever you have at home and just go outside for a few days and then you will know what you need and then do it again until you think you can make it
>>2802167What makes you think life was on easy mode? Ok time to clarify something. I'm not a fucking pampered american. I was born in a poor crab-bucket family, in a poor third world shithole. Literally the worst economy in the region. No jobs for anyone. Low trust hellhole.Sometimes it feels like there was never a chance. If there was I blew it for being young and stupid.
>>2802094>hop on welfare in california>hike in california>just do it foreverBro thousands of people do this
>>2802094>Planning on going backpacking and just making it a lifestyle.Being homeless is not a lifestyle, you dumbass.>I was wondering if to start off it would a good idea to buy a bunch of MRE's?How many MREs are you going to buy? How much will they weigh? Exactly how many days will that last you? What will you do when they run out?>If I "find" a bike to move faster, i'm taking it.So you're not just naive, lazy and weak but a criminal too? No wonder your family hate you.
Check out VagrantHoliday on YT. He doesn't make any more videos, but I like to think he's the epitome of frugality. If you do that shit, record it and post it, given you aren't a sperglord."Find" a bike. Just get a bike from Walmart or cover more ground through another medium. I'm guessing you don't have a car? Otherwise you'd sleep in that as you tour the country. If you want to "backpack forever", you'll need a way to sustain yourself, do you think BUYING MRE's is a way to sustain yourself? You are VERY naive for thinking about this without funds. Sounds like a quarter life crisis. You don't have skills, so you resort to the woods. Get a job, get your money up.
Food pantries bro. They're everywhere. Literally free food
>>2802094if you fucked up your life up to this point you will probably fuck up backpacking too and will most likely die by starvation
>>2802191South America?
>>2802094probably should find some sort of seasonal job so you know you'll have at least one way to make money.
>>2802094I got even better advice anon. Become a motorcycle nomad. Even if you're in a South American shit hole, get a Honda Navi. It's a small, cheap, and outdated motorcycle but it's better than hoofing it by foot. You can find all the parts you need online to repair every last nut and bolt at any of the partswarehouse sites. I would highly recommend becoming a nomad this way because you have no idea what you're asking for. You need a set of wheels because you're gonna go long distances without food from the sound of it. With the right maintenance a bike like this has gotten tens of thousands of miles. If you can get to the states camp out in BLM land and abuse the hell out of Amazon lockers for ordering stuff online. You can also sign up for UPS boxes as well or get an RV mailing address if you need a physical address. I would also recommend looking at a guy named scootertrampscotty on YouTube who goes over motorcycle nomad related stuff. He comes across a lot of people living on just two wheels.>>2802167>Assuming people's livesYou have no idea the lives other people have lived since he's from a 3rd world country. >>2802229>Just give up bro>Just stay in a rut forever bro>You already sucked anywayGiant pussy energy. No change is ever gonna come without taking the plunge. He might splat on the ground for all I care but he's clearly in need of a major life shake up. This anon needs to take a chance and dance with death. They're already dead anyway.
>>2802506>Giant pussy energy. No change is ever gonna come without taking the plunge. He might splat on the ground for all I care but he's clearly in need of a major life shake up. This anon needs to take a chance and dance with death. They're already dead anyway.larping as mccandless irl with no knowledge and survival skills is just glorified suicide
>>2802094This just seem like some larp shit bruh. Do you actually plan to go outside?
>>2802094>I was wondering if to start off it would a good idea to buy a bunch of MRE's? I really don't know how I could acquire food without hunting and I don't have anything to hunt with. You can only carry so much. People who hike AT/PCT/CD all have support from family, friends who mail them equipment/food along the trail. It's basically impossible to do otherwise. If you start trying to poach you're going to get caught and shot or arrested by game wardens.
>>2802529Also if you think you're going to live out a movie-tale story where you work for food as you travel then think again because the vast majority of owners will not deal with you. You will smell, and look like a bum. No amount of cleaning is going to help. People who do AT/PCT/CD just accept it because you quickly realize the odor is not easy to mask when you're outside all day long and on the move.
>>2802132>mre'sI haven't bought them in a couple years, but usually when I buy them I pay $60 for a case of twelve, making it $5 a pouch for like 700-1200 calories each, making them way cheaper than pretty much any backpacking meal.they are very heavy and bulky though.
