Is it true that the Appalachian mountains have weird creatures that roam at night?
>>2805912Only if you already believe in that crap, but if you believe in it you'll find it anywhere you look. The reality of it is outside of black bears you're the biggest baddest thing out there.
>>2805912>weird creatures that roam at night?yes, they are called americans
>>2805919true. even so, black bears are pussies. im more scared of the mountain lions. yes, there are still some out here.
>>2805925they're getting jaguars from florida now too
>>2805929Jaguars have spots. There are no jaguars in Florida, just an NFL team with that name. There are cougars (aka mountain lions, aka pumas). They’re called “Florida panthers,” but that’s because people are fucking stupid. Panthers are solid black. There are no large, solid black cats in Florida. There are no sustained populations of cougars in the east, but they do get spotted pretty often. They travel for thousands of miles; pretty wild.
>>2805942naturally, there aren't; pet trade though?yeah, we've been getting some sightings where i'm at
>>2805942another fun fact is that panthers arent even a real species, theyre just leopards / jaguars that happen to be solid black. very cool.
>>2805912>Appalachian mountains have weird creatures that roam at nightYes, me
I was stalked by a mountain lion once. I hear screams initially that I thought were female human crying for help. Turns out I was wrong, it was a mountain lion and I ran towards that fucker thinking someone needed help. Once I saw it in the distance I started walking backwards and had to do that for several miles while I watched it slowly inch its way towards me in the distance. Worst experience of my life.
>>2805912Yes. Me
>>2805948I thought panther was a general term that encompassed lots of big cats and that black panthers were just black individuals from different species
>>2805981nope
>>2805912Most true wilderness has such creatures. Best not to worry too much about them... because thinking about them draws their attention.
>>2805981No. Panther is a general term for large, solid black cats.
>>2805922
How would anyone know, nobody here hikes in Appalachia!
>>2806048Almost no one here hikes anywhere at all.
>>2806049to be fair, it is winter and most people in general do not hike in the winter except in the sun belt or tropical climates AND it has been a particularly cold and snowy winter, but even in warmer months, sadly, there can be no discussion of true eastern hiking here because it would "ruin all the good spots"
>>2806052The is not a seasonal issue on the board. /Out/ has shown a lack of knowledge and experience repeatedly, on a board-wide level (not just a few posts here and there).
>>2806052>>2806053It's because the people that are going outside on a regular basis have no interest in posting here... because they're busy going outside on a regular basis. I'm just here for the memes and shitposting.
>>2806053No, it's gonna get a little better when it warms up. Hiking season here is really march-november, in the actual mountains it's just too cold to hike in the winter unless you like being out in spikes and a bunch of gear and its 10 degrees and blowing wind. Out is generally somewhat willing to talk about European hikes and west coast us stuff, and a little bit about new england, but there's just a mental block on discussing the rest of the eastern us>>2806055you are gonna spend some time in recovering and resting inevitably nobody is hiking the appalachian trail continuously unless they are trying to set some kinda of record
>>2806033obsessed lmao
>>2806033
>>2805981Panthera is the Latin name for the genus encompassing the big cats
>>2806060>>2806061Don't samefag. It's distasteful.
>>2806099Don´t be retarded, its retarded
>>2805912depends on your definition of "weird creatures">>2805919the point you're trying to make with the first line is correct, however if you think black bears and "yourself" are the baddest things out there, I got some bad news. luckily however, you're not likely to come across the worst because they mostly avoid contact.
>>2806052winter hiking is the best when snow is on the ground. The problem is winter legitimately sucks for a good number of people where snow is only down for maybe a month, then you have several months of just cold bare woods. It's just not fun. Nothing good to look at, not even snow to enjoy. I would kill to live near the northern mountains just to not have winter be bare dull colors.
>>2806145snow is nice to look at but incredibly slippery and awful to walk oni look forward to 4 weeks from now not having to hike through snow unless i go to 3000 ft elevation and even then its gonna be at most an inch or two
>>2805912Yeah. But there are creatures hiding in basically every national park. That's why Missing 411 disappearances are so prevalent. If you're curious, here's what we know about them (and virtually all of them share these same characteristics). >person goes missing from camp>evidence suggests they took off their shoes, socks before wandering barefoot into the woods>individuals found during missing person searches have no memory of how they got there>somehow these individuals have also managed to traverse an astronomically long distance away from camp, sometimes dozens of miles in a short time period before arriving at (all very specifically) boulder fields, streams of water and berry bushesWe're not entirely sure why this happens, but it corresponds with folklore compiled by ethnologists regarding the fae in the old country. If you want to be safe, and you still want to camp in national forests, be sure to take an iron horseshoe with you. Cold iron is detestable to spirits of all kinds.
>>2805912Yeah, they're called Appalachians.
>>2806795It would be fascinating to understand the genetics behind this.
>>2807013Poor Irish+ American diet
>>2805912yes
>>2807020This + inbreeding
>>2807013>>2807020>>2807153Nah it's definitely something supernatural. Lovecraft knew it.
>>2806052Speak for yourself normie. Winter is an awesome time to out. However now it’s hard since there’s more than a foot on the ground and I hate digging out a spot for a tent
>>2806232Same here brother, I don’t own shoes or skis but if I did I’d think it be slightly more enjoyable
>>2805912They're called meth heads
yes... in other words, they're just called inbred muricans
>>2805912This picture of goatman always makes me chuckle. It looks like he went over to check on a random hiker who passed out along a trail, but then the hiker's friend came up on the two, snapped a photo, and began screaming because she assumed goatbro was the one who knocked the hiker out. And the goatman is like "Nononono I'm just trying to help I swear!" but she starts throwing rocks at him and blowing her rape whistle until he runs off.
>>2807226It's not my fault your cousins are ugly.
I'm fucking scared of cryptids. What do?
>>2807294Rape ‘em
>>2805912the appalachian mountains have too many humans for that shit. youre just influenced by internet memes. all the freaky shit is out west.
>>2807294Tweakers and kudzu are the scariest shit in Appalachia…and I’ve seen some tweakers do really fucked up shit.
>>2806061kek
>>2805942>>2805948>>2805981>>2805995>>2806008The catch all term for a black big cat is black panther, not just panther. Panther originally just meant a large cat of no specific colour, usually a leopard. Panthera is the genus that contains the five big cats, but that’s a genus name with no bearing on common usage. The only two big cats which can be solid black are jaguars and leopards, so black panther is only used to refer to them
>>2805981I can't speak for other places, but in rural Louisiana, "panther" is just another word for cougar, while a melanistic large cat of any kind is called a "black panther".
>>2807226>>2806101>>2806061>>2806060>>2805922
>>2805942There Panthers in Florida, they stick to icy habitats and are known to use sticks as tools
>>2805977
>>2805912No but in California they do. And they’re gay.
>>2805977Not so knighty after all were you, whitey
>>2809147its ok to be gay
>>2809157It's not ok to be californian
>>2809171agreed?
>>2805912I wouldn't chance it however unlikely. Just on the off chance
The mountain people are a double edged sword, they'll either be the worst or the most amazing people you could ever come across. You have to worry about snakes, cougars, and bears but besides that it's pretty easy. I learned this from urban exploration too, if you ever think some innawoods tweaker is hostile offer them or ask them for a cigarette and they will unaggro. Just mention tobacco at all, really.
>>2807169Based keltyposter
>>2809387>Tired of people>Go innawood>Some random other guy is here>He beg for a cigarette Yes, you will make a friend.
>>2805912i grew up pretty latch-key and had to spend a lot of nights out in them woods. there is a lot of weird shit that happens at night. i grew up in WV. sometimes me and my brother would hear strange whistling noises, footsteps while nobody was near, and one time we saw this giant faded pillar of light. we walked into town and it was around where the fire station was, but the light wasn't visible that close to it. walking back up the hill on the edge of down didn't make it reappear either. strange things can happen. best thing to do is to mind your own. don't go looking for trouble.
>>2805912yeah once briefly revealed itself to me last night
>>2805942Jaguars have been sighted in Texas and Arizona in recent years and they seem to thrive better in tropical climates like Florida. If Jaguars can make it to Florida it's all over for you guys.https://www.marfapublicradio.org/show/nature-notes/2021-12-16/big-cats-in-the-borderlands-jaguars-have-returned-to-the-american-southwest
>>2810712Fl here. I rarely even walk without a dog. It will warn me if some spotted death is near.
>>2805912Just meth addicts and strung out hippies. The moonshiners and inbreds will leave you alone if you leave them alone.
