This thread is named the "Soft Plastic" Edition in honor of the absence of whores with fake tits. Juicy tits are nice. Hard plastic ones are never nice.

the river mouth/bay i frequent has been full of bait, i see terns diving into the water and coming up with tiny 2-3 inch skinny silvery fish, smelt i guess
mackerel and squid are easy to catch, but i don't know about pelagics
hard to target them when there's just so so much bait in the water
i'm waiting for everything to start schooling up to head south so i can hopefully get some good topwater action
>>

Yeah, it should be pretty cool this fall.
Farmer's Almanac claims cold and dry in the Northeast which I could see but take it with a grain of salt since they have like a 50% correct prediction rate.
Hopefully it'll be wet enough to go trout fishing in the Appalachians for me.

Tied up some new nymphs. I'm thinking a curved hook would work better than the straight ones I have. I have some curved ones I bought for my stimulators, but they're 3x long and 1x fine. I'll look for some in the 1x or 2x long and 1x heavy next time I stop by the fly shop.

I just saw the charge for my first smitty's box. I'll share what all I get when it arrives. I'm excited! I hope they picked a couple good ones!
>>
>>2832803
wow.....they look terrible on my computer screen! lol...they looked ok irl and on my phone. But seeing them now on the computer screen....
I've got lead showing and terrible tapers on my zebras. And the demon midges just look....terrible! The red thread is totaly drowned out and you can't see the black ribbing at all. I'll definitely need to work on these... The copper ones look ok, but the tails are way too short on three and too long on the fourth :P I knew that already, but seeing it on a large screen....ugh... I think I'll try something smaller next time too. Maybe cock de leon. I used pheasant tail and it looks like it added a lot of bulk to the body.

My cousin is getting married in a few weeks. He lives in Denver, and that's where the wedding is going to be. I have some health problems that result in lower energy and oxygen levels. Several years ago, I went skiing in CO and felt sick almost the whole time.
I want to go fly fishing, and I want to avoid people. What is the likelihood that I'll get sick, especially if I camp out near the streams? Is free primitive camping an option in CO? What are options for motels like in the vicinity of (~1 hour away) serene trout streams? I want to do some research, but I don't know where to start?
>>
>>2832836
>Is free primitive camping an option in CO?
No there are zero national forests in colorado

They'll catch fish just fine. My gripe is that the collars on those hunchback flies should be brushed out a little more. Either that or there was some issue in how you dubbed them. Also, I dislike those double long nymph hooks, but it seems that you are already aware of the issue with them. If you want a bigger fly, get a larger size hook, not a longer longer one.

After doing some looking around, I guess it's not necessarily xlong I'm looking for, because the hooks I'm seeing that match the shape I'm looking for say they're 1x short. But this is the shape I'm looking for(picrel). It's the curve as opposed to the long straight shanks on the hooks I have. I'm actually trying to go smaller, not larger.

I liked the general shape of the coppers, if not for the bulkyness. I realized today I accidentally used 140D instead of 70D thread. So that definitely played a part. But anyway, I liked the look, so I tied another bunch of zebras on them. I think they came out much better. I bought these hooks to tie perdigons. I still need some new hooks for beadless nymphs. But I like them for the tungsten headed flies.

I wanted to get into fishing for months. I was pretty overwhelmed with all the options in Walmart and Dicks and went to a smaller store. The guy set me up for 25 bucks, cheap rod/reel, float, size 8 hooks, a few lures and some nightcrawlers.

I managed to catch some perches and bluegills with the float and nightcrawlers (when they didn't just eat the worms off the hook.) But I didn't have any success with the lures. 2 of them, i think are spinners, one of them looks like a caterpillar that moves around under water. Do i need to keep trying or are they cheap shit that wont catch anything?

Any tips on catching anything bigger than bluegills / perches or to get more catches and less stolen worms? Or other beginner advice resources?

I plan to get a better rod/reel setup in the future, maybe next year, for now I want to build up more skills and tackle.

Pic related, my first fish.

>>
>>2832997
this time of year there is a ton of food in the water for them
i find brown trout especially will get keyed in on a specific food and won't eat anything else
when there's a big hatch going on you have to have something that resembles the actual insect really well or you don't have a chance, especially in clear water
even with a good bait to match the hatch it can be difficult because there's just so much food for them to eat
>>
Hooked my first ever sturgeon yesterday. He got the weight caught in a rock and spat the hook when I couldn’t keep him pinned because of the snag. What’s a better rig than a Carolina rig for bottom fishing swift rocky rivers?

I did get close enough to look at him, while wading to try and get off the rock, he was easily 5 feet, and I could barely turn him with a size 60 Rover and 65 lb braid.
>>
>>2832997
>>2833136
Sometimes, trout are just not eating or are not angry enough to destroy trespassers. They can be moving from one place to another or simply resting. These fish aren't worth wasting your time on. They simply won't bite.
>>
>>2833139
very neat! there is a "put and take" (essentially a stocked commercial "pay to fish" lake) near me where you can fish for sturgeon, always thought about going, but, i dont have the gear for it, so i would also need to rent the gear, you have to follow VERY strict rules, cant really "land" the fish, has to be in the water, an attendant has to come and help you unhook it, all sorts of shit.

Sturgeon arent really native to my country, so i guess it makes sense, i´m not a "trophy" fisherman, im happy just going for perch, zander and pike.

would you say the fishing experience, from like, the hook up i guess, to getting it in is worth it? of course big fish is always cool. but catching one in basically a zoo just kinda feels ... meh

Post the lures for us

Sounds like youve got a decent start. I wouldnt worry about bigger fish for a hot minute, just keep fishing and make notes of where youre seeing/catching fish. Big fish will come with time and there's no shame in small fish.
Congrats on your first fish.
>>2833139
Santee cooper rig. Use lighter line to the weight, if it gets stuck itll break off and youll get everythjhg else back.
>>
>>2833142
The rules here are pretty stringent too. Naturally reproducing sturgeon are locally abundant but extirpitated from or at least vanishingly rare in thousands of kilometers of former river habitat, so if you want to keep one, you have to get a tag for each fish, like hunting deer or bear. I think I’d like to keep one one day, but not right now.

Anyways, IDK if I would participate in your situation. I have complicated thoughts about artificial “fishing ponds” even for regular eating fish like walleye or trout or crappies, never mind what sounds like a really weird experience if you wanted to sturgeon fish in that situation. The minute or two I fought him before he wedged my weight in that boulder was pretty cool, but not as amazing as the first time I caught a shark or a tuna or a 1.2m musky. It was a 40-50 kilo fish from a fishery which has produced verified 75 kilo and unverified 110 kilo fish, so it’s going to be a thrill regardless, but my pb musky on the same riverway was a better fight despite being ~1/2 to 2/3rds the weight. If you just wanna bend a heavy ass rod and fight a powerful fish, big catfish or ocean going predators are cooler than stocked pond sturgeon by far.
>>
>>2833150
>Santee cooper rig. Use lighter line to the weight, if it gets stuck itll break off and youll get everythjhg else back.
do you mean a 3way rig or running ledger rig? The Santee Cooper just seems to be a Carolina rig with a peg float to get the hook off the bottom. I need the hook on the bottom.

I misremembered the name, and the name seems to be disagreed upon anyways. Some posts call it the super slider rig, pic rekated calls it the double barrel rig. Regardless, its basically a carolina rig, but if the weight gets stuck its tied on to a weaker line that can be anywhere from inches to feet long and will break off leaving you firmly tehhered to your fish, or at least not stuck on the bottom anymore.

>fish don't care about your line.
The color of the line best make a bit a difference, some fish are picky it's been proven fish can see colors.
There's a reason why a lot of hard plastic baits have a red head because color makes a difference..
Mono and floro will always be nearly invisible in almost all water color.
Where highly-vis colors are used by lazy and newbs to help them see some they might be getting a bit or not at the hook.
>>
>>2833215
Red is not visible below 16 feet of water, that's as deep as red light can penetrate. So, unless you're fishing shallow, red on lures is a meme.
>>
>>2833215
This must be the fishing Florida faggot. I am mostly a fly guy, but my friend and coworker is a very competent angler. He likes to fish a whacky rig on a spinning rod with hi-vis yellow line. He uses it after missing a fish or simply to cover a particular spot. The reason for the hi-vis line is so that he can slack line the bait when drifting in his kayak but still detect bites visually. Plus, he has a leader on anyway.
>>
>>2833215
I never used high vis line until just recently and bright blue braid hasn't stopped me from out fishing everybody around me when I go out.

Line really seems to barely matter. The blue is nice though, nobody can blame me for leaving line around because you know if it's mine.
>>
>>2833219
Yeah, his name is matt, hes got delusions of grandeur or something just ignore him
>The reason for the hi-vis line is so that he can slack line the bait when drifting in his kayak but still detect bites visually.
Thats why i run high vis line on most of my spinning and baitcasting setups.
Even when i am fly fishing km usually running very heavy tippet. Last time i used less than 3x was because 3x wouldn't fit through the eye of the hook the nymph i wanted to fish was tied on.

this is called someone who is a professional consumer. they buy have anything just because they believe it would increase their hookup ratio when it comes to fishing. before companies started selling the products to anglers people did what some still do use a bamboo stick and a string some people use leftover fishing line left on ground by superior fishmen with their bait casters, van staal ect and bottle or can and catch fish they not looking for other anglers to have circle jerk over how much they spent on a hobby reminds of a time I was fishing the olds were bird watching and taking pictures of them with their fancy cameras one guy walks over where I'm fishing starts snapping pictures of birds before I knew here comes the other guy over by my spot and they bragging about how much their cameras were.

it's just the most well known fully sealed reel, meaning saltwater doesn't get in and corrode the mechanism, nor sand if it gets submerged in the wash on a beach
so i can stick the butt end of my rod down like a walking stick when i'm wading to my rock and not worry about it, same if i drop it accidentally
some people even swim out to a rock with their rod tethered to their belt suspended below them

Ohh and I believe the most popular reason a lot of people like Van Staal is they're some what lazy and prefer to pay someone like me to service their reels don't get me wrong I don't mind the extra pocket change when it comes to $25 a reel i service basically i get paid for the cost of labor.
But you remind me of guys who have a nice car and take it to a car wash rather then taking pride in cleaning a nice thing you own. Too each their own yard?
Just so I can toot my own horn i got 3 reels in for service this week because other shops likely charge to much .
I've serviced Van Staal by the way mainly for bail arm replacement and damaged clickers

Great day today, guys. Called out sick to go fishing. I caught my PB brown at 18 inches. I was fishing a 4 WT in a new-to-me spring creek, but the width, flow, and temperature are unusual for the area. I mostly fought the fish upstream, and there were many moments where it felt like I was stuck to a log. I could not feel anything but consistent, unmoving pressure for several seconds until I changed the direction of my rod, and this happened multiple times in what was at least a 60 second fight. There weren't really any obstructions that he could've gotten into. That fish made my day, and I caught several others too, all on terrestrials.
One odd thing I noticed was that one fish ate my hopper on the surface. I waited a second and set the hook. I see the trout is foul hooked way down the body. How did that happen?
P.S. Skid, your hoppers didn't work for me. They lie on their side. The Charlie Boy Hopper was the fly of the day.
P.P.S I picked up trash and was rewarded. Yesterday, I got some stupid-looking hopper and a San Juan worm. Today, I got one bent spinner, a hares ear, and an elk hair caddis. I cleaned up a bunch of line, a few cans, and a bottle. That went well.

Tipping is expected, which is terrible but true. You should tip based on the quality of the service. I'm sure you've read a list of instructions on what to bring or wear, so just follow that and have a good time. If you haven't fly fished before, you'll learn a lot. If you have fly fished, your casting, fishing, and reading techniques should level up. I have not fished with a guide, but that's what I gather.

Strange. Im sorry it was being difficult for you. I forget the exact version i sent you, to bf honest. Was it on a barbless hook? My only guess is maybe the wire was too light to keel the fly. Did it have a wing?

Yes, it was barbless and had a white yarn wing. I did not know that light wire could create this problem. Good to know. Still a fan of your fuzzle bugger.
>>
>>2833949
Yeah sometimes foam flies dont like light wire hooks. I probably never noticed because im usually running a dropper when i tie on a hopper. Glad you like the fuzzle buggers, sorry again about the oversight on the hoppers. I could probably fix them if i got some .010 or .015 lead free wire and glued 4-6 wraps to the bend of the hook right at the edge of the body, but its stupid that youd have to deal with it. Or maybe i over built the wing and its causjng teetering issues? Maybe both?

Calf body hair is officially the hardest material I've worked with!! It's too short for my hair stacker, which is pretty small. And I can't seem to catch it to tie it in. I'm trying to pinch wrap it, but the thread just wants to slide right over and through it. It doesn't help that I'm trying to tie it in the opposite direction that I'm used to. I'll get it, but just wanted to voice a little frustration. If anyone has any tips for working with it, let me know please!

My new rod and reel arrived today! It feels nice. There was a spool of Rio 5x fluorocarbon tippet in there too. So that's everything I'll need to euro nymph(rod, reel, backing and line, leader and tippet) except for flies, which I've been working on tying. Hopefully I'll have an opportunity to take it out sometime this week. Wednesday looks like it'll be the coolest day this week at 99F and partly cloudy. Triple digits otherwise. Yahoo! I caught my first brook trout today! Based on a glance at this new-to-me stream, I decided to fish tenkara today. The stream was tiny, the weeds were tall, and I was throwing terrestrials. The first spot you can get to from the parking lot featured some risers, so I casted to them, but they weren't committing hard enough. I switched to an ant, and it worked. I launched a tiny brook trout into the brush behind me.
After this episode, I decided to move on. Almost the entire stream was inaccessible because of deep muck or tall grass. I followed the mowed trail and eventually completed the circle. Even though it was getting dark, I decided to try the first spot, but there was a beaver, so I went down to a small section i hadn't fished. Lots of rising fish. I had a kebari tied on, one that was given to me at a conference by a local well-known figure in the tenkara world. I was casting as far as I could (one of the downsides of tenkara), and I got a bite. It was much bigger than the first, and he was getting me stuck in the weeds. I let him free himself, and I pull the fish in. Based on rudimentary measurements, that brook trout was about 11 inches. I am very pleased.

If your knife doesnt shave its not hard enough and the fish should be cold when you go to clean it- the cold firms the meat up and its easier to cut cnsistently without just mushing it. Otherwise just relax, take your time, and know youre gonna fuck a few up before you learn. If you have sunfish in your area those are great to learn on because of their abundance.

I was thinking the same. The ice dubbing doesn't like to brush out with the nylon brush. I'm going to have to pick some out with my bodkin on the walt's, since they're wrapped in crystal flash. But I can try hitting the hare's ears with my wire brush, since they're wrapped in wire.

Go to harbor freight or equivalent they have brass and steel tolthbrush looking things that are great for brushing a fly out aggressively. Also try wire brushing before wrapping; make everything "too" buggy then use the rib to tame it back down.

The point is to kick up dust and hit up against rocks to look like a distressed fish. On top of that, fish tend to hug the bottom where it's cooler and easier to blend in to the environment. Doesn't mean they won't come up to chase the top water.

I was fishing a creek today. I saw plenty of fish but had no luck. I went back to my car and sat down for a while. I take only my tenkara rod and my car keys. I make a couple casts, and I see this monster rainbow (30+ inches) swipe at my kebari. I pulled the fly away before it could eat, but it was a definite attempt. My state cannot really support rainbow trout, so this was incredible. That fish was a possible state record. Anyway, I went back to my car to get my Western fly rod, net, etc, but I never saw the fish again. I caught only one fish all day, a dink brown.

Not sure if your health concerns are respiratory related but there are some gnarly fires going on the western slope right now with very little containment & it is pummeling my lungs. I’m only familiar with fishing northern front range CO so another anon would have to fill you in going south: Poudre tributary creeks have some cutthroat & most isolated, Big Thompson & tributaries offer better opportunity, & I’ve heard great things about fly fishing the St. Vrain west of Boulder/Longmont for cutty. Basically further south/west the better your opportunity but again those fires are mucking things up. Good luck

Have a fishing guide trip tomorrow. Any advice between now and then to make the most of it?
>>
>>2835041
Be honest and open about your skill level, and ask questions both about the body of water you're on and fish behavior in general; general knowledge about fish behavior will make it easier to find fish when you're fishing alone. Do what the guide says, but ask why- not from a position of doubt, but from a want of knowledge

Kind of. I have asthma, but my bigger problem is iron deficiency anemia. I eat tons of meat and work leafy greens into my diet when I can, but I've still got it. I used to take special iron pills 3x/day, but they didn't help much. I'm seeing a hematologist next month. Anyway, this all means that I am likely to get sick when the air gets thin.
It sounds like you would normally recommend that I go southwest of Denver, but you fish northwest, and now, things might be different now because of fires. I need to find a town to set basecamp (a motel) in, and I'm still clueless. I'm going to dedicate the morning to research. I will leave on Friday next week and start fishing on Sunday, so I gotta figure this out soon.

Taking a shit right now. It's fairly normal, but the day is young.
I was at a lower section last week, which is where I caught a brown as big as my net. Yesterday, I hooked into a brown that was around the same size, maybe bigger, but he come off as I was netting him. The cave was only accessible via scuba gear, but the DNR had installed bars to stop all access, which I couldn't see. I'll look harder next time. In total, I caught two browns and missed one, all of them on a wall near the cave entrance. I had technical difficulties elsewhere. I got hung up on a tree and smacked my rod with a trekking pole trying to get it out, but I think the rod is ok. Before going to the cave stream, I went back to the brookie stream and caught two. One final word about the cave stream, there is so much water coming out of there. It's also counter-intuitive. Normally, streams pick up size and force when you go down stream, but this one is strongest at the cave. It's one of the biggest caves in the US, so I guess it makes sense that the creek wouldn't rely as heavily on tiny feeder springs.

I got the new beads I ordered, rainbow. They're pretty neat looking. Hopefully the fish think so to! Lol!

It's hard to tell, but those are two different colors of perdigon. The ones on the right are gasolinas, clear flash over olive thread. The other is peacock mylar, it changes colors depending on the angle.

I tied another set of "sexy walt's" with the peacock ice dubbing. I tried brushing it out before wrapping the flash. They looked very buggy before wrapping, but a lot less after. I think they still look buggier then my last batch.

And last but not least, some "Hare's ears" and half/halfs, also with the peacock ice dubbing. I was able to brush and tease out quite a bit on these and think they came out pretty well.

What lakes are you going to? What fish are you targeting? I try to have a mix of pike (spoons, inline spinners, shallow cranks), walleye (deep divers, hair jigs, etc), and lake trout stuff (heavier versions of the same stuff, mostly) with, but if you're not going to be fishing any of the 100-200 ft deep lakes, you don't need to bother with the lake trout stuff.
I try not to bring soft plastics because of the likelihood of them being torn off the hook and turned into plastic garbage in the water.

Overall, the most productive single lure I use is the Rapala Shad Dancer. I've caught Northerns, Walleyes, and Lakers with them.

for creek fishing get some small hardbaits. preferably floating minnows or very slow sinking ones. wakebaits are good too, along with any other small topwater. if you go to walmart they have the tiny little creme crankbaits for a little over a dollar and they are very good, just keep in mind that they often run crooked out the package so you have to bend the line tie to make them run straight. this is what they look like.
these lipless crankbaits are also good
> https://www.walmart.com/ip/Creme-Lure-Ultra-Light-Crankbait-Lure-Blue-Back/297939067
you can't really get much better lures for the price.
then you can get mepps at a good price by purchasing the grab bag special. the smallest sizes get you the most for your money and are great for creeks because they don't snk too fast.

I don't understand the weight/naming for rods. "heavy rod" "light/medium" rod. what does this refer too? on the fishing line for example it could say 15lbs mono, so it's rated for 15lbs - simple.

went fishing today, ended up getting a drum on my line and it took off with my spoon & leader. first time using a leader too. did not expect such large fish in the area I was in. all part of the fun though. I will say, I get confused on leaders and swivels, I don't understand the point of using them besides laziness. tying a knot whenever you switch baits doesn't take that long and it's part of the enjoyment for me. I had bought these leaders expecting it to come with something to attach lures too, but I had to use a shitty swivel that's gone into the river now.
>>
>>2835626
rod "power" is what you're asking about. it simply refers to how "strong" or stiff it is to resisting force. the heavier the rating, the more force it takes to bend it.
then there is rod "action" which is how quickly the rod reacts to those same forces. the faster the action, the more "crisp" or fast it reacts. this also means that it only bends in the top section of the rod. the "slower" or moderate the action, the more noodley it feels, and thus bends deep down the rod, some all the way down to the handle.
>>
>>2835627
thanks, makes sense. anything on the leaders?
>>
>>2835629
leaders are either for braid mainline or for toothy fish. also, snaps are just for convenience, however snap SWIVELS are for lures that create line twist, like inline spinners.
>>
>>2835629
Leaders are either for connecting different line types, adding bite resistance with metal for toothy fish or for going from a heavy mainline to a weaker leader in heavy snag areas so the breaking point is the leader, and you can keep other hardware above say a swivel to lighter leader. Or so you don't leave 100 feet of braid in the water if you snag a log and can't get your shit back.

so how do you put lures onto a leader? I realize how stupid this sounds, but I thought the leaders would come with a metal clip or something for the lures, effectively permitting tying line to the leader and just changing the baits easily. what is the piece called tp just attach to the leader and clip new lures on? snap? swivel?
>>

Planning to get into ice fishing this winter. I'm leaning towards getting a tent (probably a used one) but at the same time, I really do not want to sit in a tent with a propane heater going. Every time I've been around propane heaters I get a headache. And in general I just cannot stand the smell of exhaust, so I doubt a diesel heater would be any better.
So my question is, is it a good idea to put a small wood stove in a tent? I'd add a stovejack, of course. I'm not worried too much about weight because I'd mainly just be taking my truck onto the ice anyway (not hiking across a lake pulling a tent in a sled in -30 celsius).
Or should I just try to buy/build a cheap wheelhouse?

retarded question but if you're putting a snap on a leader isn't the snap another weak point where its more likely the fish can take off with the lure?
why use a leader, can't you just tie a snap to your line and switch baits whenever?
>>
>>2835649
Bc big fish cut the line. Pike for sure. Leaders help the lure act diffrent too. Nose weight/ line stiffness can make topwater stuff bob and weave or splash diffrently. Just a snapswvl vs a knot is diffrent. Mono leaders on braid are good for hiding line in clear water.
>>
>>2835649
To be honest I'm old skool fishing i don't believe in jewelry on my line. So to answer your question the only thing you're doing is losing something with the lure if it's stuck.
The only benefit that the quick snap offers is that word allows anglers to change out lures without cutting line and having to re-tie the knot every time they want to change out a different lure.
These anglers nowadays act like they in a fishing tournament they so focused on catching fish to take a selfie with they forget it's supposed to be a man being outdoors like he was supposed to be doing. A lot of us have access to a grocery store nowadays we luckily don't have to worry about going out hunting for days and coming home with nothing for our families to eat.
I fish basic.
Braid to Monofilment using Double Uni-Knot Mono leader to hook basic Clinch Knot. If I'm using a sinker split shot or knocker rig, lure fishing basic clinch knot
>>
>>2835308
What rod were you using?
>>
>>2835646
Thanks for the reconsider on the soft plastics. Those lakes are definitely pike and smallie waters primarily. You might catch some eyes too, but no need to worry about laker gear. Heavier spoons you can cast a mile would be a lot of fun if you have the rod for them.
>>
>>2835626
A leader is the opposite of laziness. A leader can be a lighter, clearer, or more durable line material than your main line. If you have 15 lb braid main line and are fishing spinners for trout, you need to tie on a ~4 lb monofilament or fluorocarbon leader. What I would do is connect with an Albright knot and then use a snap swivel at the end for quick connections and better casting (better than having a swivel way up the line. If I was fishing for pike, I'd get a metal leader, and it would have a snap at the end because most wire isn't knottable.
>>
>>2835649
Leader can work if you only need a short section close to the lure for a particular purpose, like tougher line for bite resistance or clear line like mono on braid if you want low visibility but also very low stretch.

As far as snaps, they're typically much stronger than people expect. I've done scientific tests with a crane scale and had very small, fine wire snaps stretch all out of shape but hold for well in excess of 40lbs.
>>
I spent most of my day tying knots instead of casting. I think i should kill myself
>>
>>2835779
You could do that....alternatively, you could spend some time practicing your knots so you're not spending much time on them on the water. It takes me a few seconds to tie a clinch knot. I'll have most likely switched flies a dozen times if I've been fishing for 2-3 hours. It doesn't take much time out of my fishing.

I was telling my coworker in the fishing department this. I just realized that most people won't even have their drag cranked to 22 lb. Who needs a 40 lb snap anyway?
>>
>>2835770
>leader can work ... for a particular purpose
exactly, most people are using a leader to have a strong and generally clear front end so some razor toothed fish doesn't shred their line while also being neigh invisible to said fish.
>>
>Finally decide to register for pikeminnow since it's all I catch
>Catch one (1) over the size requirement today and absolutely nothing else even though it looked like a beautiful morning for fishing
Fishing's a lot less fun when you're targeting a single species in a designated area.
>>
>>2835871
Oh, and on an unrelated note I think I hate baitkeeper hooks and I think they might be fucking pointless? I decided to try to save worms and use baitkeepers over my normal finesse widegap hooks and my hook up ratio was HORRIBLE and it would only save a small piece of worm that nothing would bite anyways, so no point at all unless I'm going for panfish or some shit.
>>
>>2835846
It's helped me use much smaller terminal tackle, smaller swivels, smaller snaps, even on heavier rigs. The only exception is if I know the snap is too small to physically to fit around the eye of the lure of hook I'm using. Even on a big levelwind or conventional with 30lb mono you're lucky to be putting out 10lbs of good even drag, so you're at basically no risk if your knots are square.

Took the new rod out. I like it. Still getting used to the feel and the hook set. But landed 3 fish and hooked into another dozen or so that I either didn't set the hook on and lost right away or the 4 that I hooked well but didn't keep the tension well enough for them not to spit the hook. Hey buddy so here’s what I know: the area you’re talking about isn’t ideal conditions, but offers great opportunity with access. Fires on Western slope haven’t gotten better as far as I can tell, and particularly the Lee fire. Craig or Steamboat Springs might be the ideal town for you to set up in. Forgiving elevation, but fire to the south will limit your options. Outside of that, Grand Junction is bigger & a travel town, Meeker & Rifle likely off limits, Hayden is right next to Craig in case nothing there, & Walden elevation might kill ya. Steamboat has hot springs which may appeal to you. Really good opportunity all throughout there, pretty depopulated, fire bans in most of those counties. There is a CO fishing atlas thru CPW/CSU I advise you check out. Let me know if there’s anything else you’re wondering, that’s a great area to target but if you have others you’re considering, I probably know some of the towns at least which you could stay in. If it’s NW CO for sure, I would pick Steamboat of your options. GL

But also, yes there's not a lot else active right now. I catch the occasional bass, the carp stopped biting but I get to watch them taunt me, etc etc. All I get is pikeminnow so why not cash in?
>>
>>2836241
Thanks for coming back. A famous fly shop owner responded to my cutthroat inquiry email and recommended that I fish the Clear Creek system in the Georgetown and Berthoud Pass area. I'm totally open to other options as well. Is this far enough out of Denver? I don't mind driving every day. Even when I am staying at my family's cabin in trout country, I drive 1+ hours to get to streams.
Anyway, I'm debating whether I should stay in a casino in Blackhawk or if I should stay in Golden. I'm leaning towards the casino due to the good rates.
I've been using the CO fishing atlas, and last night, I activated the Trout Routes free trial.

That's how I started. I stalked local YouTubers. If you put in enough effort to track people down, you earn the spot and will take care of the spot. I've been there. I'll practice a knot dozens, maybe even hundreds of times and when I'm out on the water it'll just snap or won't cinch down and I'll have to keep retying. It's the worst with leader to line connections.

>>2836309
Clarify for me; do you just look for bodies of water and where you can get to them? What are things to look for?
>>
>>2836456
Yeah i start by looking for bodies of water, then i look for parking access near by, ideally a park of some kind, then use street view to look for signs like "members only" or a locked gate with a "no tresspassing sign"
If it looks like theres room to safely park and legal access to the shoreline ill make the drive and investigate. Rivers ill trace along looking for parks or bridges with public easements, lakes and reservoirs i look around tge perimeter and near bridges.
>>

Inshore angling is frustrating as FUCK. Almost every spot is a deadzone, and the rare ones you find that do hold fish, have some of the most sluggish and lethargic retards that won't even acknowledge your lures. I try everything from finesse to medium light, slow and fast pitch retrieves, and got lure scents to convince them even further and matching the local bait, but one wrongly timed cast, change in barometric pressure, or retarded diver farting under water will fuck your shit up instantly.
When I used to fish with bait I never left the spot without having caught a minimum of 5 fish, once I transitioned to lures about a year ago the difficulty curve has been sisyphean. Now I catch a maximum of 2-3 fish per session on a GOOD day. That said, fishing with lures is a lot more fun than bait, and having the option to try new jigs, soft plastics and plugs is always a delight I will admit.

Does anyone still make good tray-style lower profile tackle boxes?

My dad has an old two sided Fenwick that I like a lot, I've got a huge old Plano from probably the 70s or 80s and it's massively bulky. I'm looking for something sort of low profile. Bank fishing and kayaking on protected waterways mostly. Just something big enough to hold the basics, I don't want to tote around 10 pounds of gear every time I go out.

I only ask because it seems like Plano doesn't make any such thing anymore, not with a handle anyway. It doesn't have to be two sided just lower profile and have a good handle. Waterproof is a bonus but not required.

Ignore the price and any specific listing, but is this what you're looking for: PLANO MOLDING Compartment Box: 13 1/2 in x 10 1/8 in x 4 1/4 in, Beige/Green, 19 Compartments
I use a single sided tray with no handle. I slip it into my backpack or beneath my kayak seat. A handle isn't bad, but why would you need one if you can just put it in a backpack? You can move from spot to spot and not worry about holding your pliers and drink as well.
>>
>>2837090
Yeah more or less that style of box.

Though the more I think about it single sided might be better because half of your kit is always going to be inaccessible on a double sided design.

The idea of sticking a tackle box into my backpack never even occurred to me. A box inside of a bag? A container within another container? Preposterous.

Really I just need something smaller than my current box because the box I have now was my great grandpa's and he bought like the largest thing possible in a given product line basically always. It's way too large to put in a backpack and a pain in the ass to carry. It's maybe OK for storing overflow gear in the garage but completely overkill for what I do.

I use a little satchel I impulse bought from bass pro to store my ultralight gear. Scissors, hemostats, soft bait, a plano 3500 with my hard baits, water bottle, phone/wallet/keys, bug spray, and extra line all fit in it. I bought it for my fly fishing gear but it wasn't comfortable with my net attached to it, so I relegated it for my regular rod. Wish it had more slips/pockets and more attach points outside of it.

That's what I do. I have my dad's old tackle box and just use it to throw crap I don't really use into.
Just go to wal-mart and grab some cheap plano boxes. 3400-3700 series. I always thought it was funny that my grandpa and dad always took a whole ass tackle box with them. Never understood it but I guess it's what the older folk do.

Great day today. I am writing this post in the unmade bed of my hotel room in a rundown, high altitude casino. Obviously, that's not the great part. The great part outweighs that shitty part.
I began this trip very worried about altitude, but I've done pretty well. After taking my time, I get on the water late morning or early afternoon. It was a small creek that was promised to have cutties. I caught my first Colorado fish, a brook trout, and I was happy. Fishing this creek was taxing. I went to a higher elevation, but the creek was not very accessible and I was lightheaded. I got the George Floyd experience. I made my way down from that area, but I would up going over 11,000 ft and crossing the continental divide, something that was a goal of mine. I got to the fishing spot and catch my second fish, another brookie, but then, I catch 6 cutthroat, and on the Pacific side of the continent no less. Catching cutthroat has been another goal of mine, so I'm incredibly pleased I was able to get that done this trip since I don't know when I'll be coming back. I'll share pics of the two of the best-looking fish.

I'm not sure of the species of these cutthroat, so I'm going to post a picture of the best and most different-looking cutthroat, and then, I'm going to post a picture of a fish that looked like the rest.

What's your favorite fish to catch?
Mine is pic related, a white seabream. Pretty ubiquitous around the Mediterranean, member of the porgy family.
They're finicky feeders and spook easily, and once hooked will fight like hell and try to take you under rocks. Heaps of fun to catch on ultralight.
They're also really good to eat, but I release them back because Mediterranean fish stocks are already in a pitiful state from overfishing

That snap is not attached correctly. Snaps and jigs don't go together, unless you must use a metal leader.

Really? I see a lot of anglers do that here because it's faster than having to tie a loop knot every time you want to switch out lures. It has pretty much the same action as a loop knot.

I would just git gud at tying knots. When I got into the hobby, Fishing With Nat (very nice channel) said not to use snaps on jigs, so I don't do it. I think it's probably bad for the action.

Do you really need any knot but the uniknot?
>>
>>2837479
The blood knot is what I prefer to tie instead of the double uni for line connections. The albright is needed for mono/fluoro to braid. The nail knot is needed for connecting fly line to backing or connecting a leader to fly line. The surgeon's loop is a pretty nice loop, also helpful for fly line to backing.
>>
>>2837479
And the palomar is nice and convenient when using braid.

Rainbows seem to like these. I got several bites that I missed and two hookups. Here's the better of the two that made it to the net :)

Yikes! How old are they? Hopefully the goo fixes them.

Snaps on jigs are fine, just make sure to attach it on the assist hook split ring and not directly on the jig's tying point to not hinder its fluttering action.
As for jigheads in saltwater, I doubt a loop knot will have much of a difference presentation-wise over a loop knot, unless you're fishing super clear and shallow, in which case going weightless is preferable anyways.

The snap looks tied on and closed properly to me idk what youre on about.
Also the only real reason not to use a snap on a jig is snaps can wear out and if youre dragging it through weeds itll pick up more gunk than a knot.
>>2837479
Palomar knot for strength, albright knot for differing line diameters, and kreh loop for loops
>>2837500
Its fun catchjng fish on flies you tied
Those boots are several years old by now, i gave up trying to shoe goo when the sand wouldnt stop comjng out of them. Need a clean surface for the adhesive. I should have my new boots kn by next week.

Yeah snaps allow the same free movement as long as the wire the snap is made of is thin enough not to wedge itsself in the eye of the jig at a weird angle. That said, gettijg gpod at knots is still usually preferable because it makes recovery faster after a break off.
>>
snaps have no effect on action of lures at all
>>
>>2837560
Not innately true, if your snap is too thich to move freely through the eye of the lure it can impede action but fir the most part the snap either helps or at least doesnt hurt.

I'm finally deciding to git gud at fishing as a way to start kicking my vidya habit, and to also learn an insanely useful survival skill. How do you all get excited to go fishing? I want to get better and actually learn how to fish, but every time I go I can't catch anything / get bored / discouraged. I'm fishing in my local river, and I'm always coming up with either weeds or a snagged line I have to cut. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, maybe I should just start with a bobber and go from there.

I have a 16 ft aluminum boat with a 20 hp motor on the back. What size trolling motor should I get if I want to target muskie and pike?
>>
>>2837589
Target small fish if you just want to catch something. Bobber plus small jighead with a worm works a treat. Cut up your worm and put smaller pieces on though, more use out of the worm, you loose less, and you hook up more.

>I'm fishing in my local river
How fast is it moving? What size is it? Is it muddy, clear or somewhere in between? What's the beach and river bed made of.. sand, dirt, rock or something else? Lots of variables in rivers and because of that, how to fish them. Do you have ponds or lakes in your area? They're typically more beginner friendly, especially if you're on a spinning or baitcaster setup. Speaking of...what are you fishing with? what reel what lures and or bait?
>>
>>2837020
Are you pond fishing with a fly setup? or are you looking at getting into fly fishing and going from still water to rivers?
>>
>>2837610
Use a GPS to figure out how fast you’re going at idle. I do best trolling for pike at higher speeds, 2mph or faster, you might not need to buy anything.

Otherwise a 60 lb foot thrust unit would be plenty.

is there a way to make this usable or repair it

>>
>>2837651
Damn how did you manage that?
Do you have the piece that broke off? The only fix i can imagine is to jb weld the original bit back on, then reinforce that by gluing the reel in to the reel seat on the rod so it literally cant be removed.
>>
>>2837589
Don't get discouraged, I didn't catch anything until my 4th or 5th trip. Don't sperg about asking for help at your local tackle or bait shop they're always eager to help or give advice. Use live bait and a bobber setup, go as light as possible, play around with the depth of your bobber to key in on where the fish are feeding. If worms or minnows aren't catching anything and you're on a river bank with lots of vegetation around try to look for crickets or other local insects that fish might be actively feeding on. If you're getting snagged too frequently your bobber might be set too deep.

My bad for the late reply, just got off work. I'm using a 6'6 rod with a hook size just smaller than my ring fingernail, but slightly larger than my pinky fingernail. I live in NJ, so I've been fishing outta the Passaic River mostly, I almost caught a catfish once with some cheese-filled hotdogs I bought. Got nibbles, but no bites.
>>2837698
Thanks man, I'll stick with the live bait and bobber setup that you and the other anons suggested.

In the UK you can get 'rock' which is 'rock eel/salmon', no idea where those names came from, which is dogfish at many fish and chip shops. It used to be more popular in the old days, not as much now but I've had it a few times and it's nice. It normally comes on a big bone in chippies and is slightly fishy tasting but pleasant.
