>>2837764I generally look at the bottom of the thread where the new posts are, not the top. You’re not a retard using autoload so you can’t just pass over a thumbnail, are you? It’s a thread about fishing, post fish or discuss fishing. Better yet, find and or take pictures of sluts with fish, one of the reasons why KVD is slow to post new threads is because he’s running out of his fishing slut pictures. Helping him with this will reduce the number of threads started with pictures that don’t fit the formula.>>2837766I hate the image because it’s AI. Stop feeding Techno-Baal.Anyways, post dinks.

>>2837776What did you get? I went to a couple fly shops on my Colorado trip and found the Patagonia combat-style boots to be very nice. All the dedicated, independent fly shops hate Simms now.
>>2837901Simms tributary boots. They're cheaper than the orvis clearwater boots theyre replacing
>>2837902I liked the flyweights, but they went to shit really fast. They began to delaminate in less than a year of use, but this year's model looks better.
>>2837921Hopefully these dont bite me in the ass. Ive got some cheap simms stickingfoot waders, i forget if theyre freestone or tributary or what, but i really like them and figured the boots would be decent.
I fell for the fishing meme and I cannot catch anything>8 or so trips on different fresh water river banks and lakes>mornings and evenings, 2-6 hours at a time>spinners, grubs, minnows, etc>able to locate the fish, cannot catch one for dear lifeAre fish even real?

> You will go fishing, and you will catch nothing!> You will eat the bugs yourself.
>>2838001Reel too in that budget? St. Croix BassX in medium heavy or heavy, and a good reel. No reel needed in that budget? St. Croix Legend Tournament Bass.
>>2838038naa, just for the rodwhy st croix, all their shit went to mexico and their warranty is ass now
>>2838036What if """the bugs"""" tastes better and easier to catch?
>>2838040>all their shit went to mexico Only the “cheap” stuff and you can’t find a rod made in the USA for less than their cheaper US made rods.>and their warranty is ass now I still got a 6 year old $180 rod replaced for $20 last year because I broke the tip like an ape. Of course, if you can’t drive to Park Falls you’re going to pay shipping too. Does anyone making nice rods still have a no-cost lifetime any longer?Anyways, that’s not why I recommend St. Croix, I recommend St Croix because I prefer fishing with the St. Croix Premier to fishing with the other ~$200 factory made rods I’ve tried, including Shimano Inteza and Daiwa Tatula. I’ve since bought more expensive St. Croix rods, though I’ll admit that I haven’t cross shopped a Legend with the other stuff in the $300-$350 price range or a Legend Elite with the other stuff in the $400 price range.
>>2838046honest question, and not trying to garner the attention of "hurr, durr America best" crowdbut, why does it only seem like Americans are about warranties in hobby items like fishing gear, wouldn't you like a cheaper upfront price, that doesn't incentivize the company to make extensive warranty policies? most of those product warranty policies just add price to the initial purchase. that you, again, wouldn't need if it was properly made product? i dunno, thats probably a question for some bored economist, but, eh
>>2837971For some reason when you tell somebody to just throw a bobber and a worm on they take is as a personal insult.
>>2838049>why does it only seem like Americans are about warranties in hobby items like fishing gear, wouldn't you like a cheaper upfront price, that doesn't incentivize the company to make extensive warranty policies?I think too many people are worried about warranties too, but the idea is that if there’s an unconditional warranty, a company is going to make the product as well as they can to control the costs of replacing it. This was certainly the case at a certain point in time, but who knows now?I legit don’t care about saving the $30 or whatever per rod that the actuary tables might say a rod company might save by going from a 7 year to a 1 year warranty on a $150-200 rod, though. Races to the bottom do nothing good for the quality of product.
>>2838052i genuinely dont know anymore, i have ABU wheels that i can drive to the old factory and have serviced, which i love, but i also see the decline, how sustainable is this, egocentrically for me, but then i hear from the factory workers that most refurb jobs come from over seas, and knowing that the Chinese market for legacy sporting equipment is so much high, idonno man. its a mystery to both of us
>>2837967Warm or cold water rivers and lakes? What kind of fish are in there? I moved from warm water to cold and the entire fishing experience changed. I needed to learn new techniques for these fish. We can better suggest what to do next if you give us a bit more detail.
>>2838036I feed ze bugs to my chickens and quail and they give me eggs in return. I eat ze eggs.
>>2838051Only because Americans are completely obsessed with bass and don't care about any other fish.
>>2838063>fly fishing with the 2wt in my creek>boomers pull up asking if I caught anything>yeah lots of bluegill>no reposense and they leaveThis happens a lot. They look at me like an alien for it. They'd probably look at me like I'm insane if I told them I ENJOY catching shiners on my ultralights lmao.
>>2838059Warm water. I don’t really want to travel that far to lakes and streams an hour or two away yet before I catch something closer to me. As far as type of fish, it’s usually smallmouth, spotted bass, and sunfish. Theres others of course but those are the main ones with smallmouth being the most common. I really don’t care what I catch though I’m fine with anything at this point.
>>2838046are they better than exprides
>>2838001Those techniques require different rods. A frogging rod is going to be a heavy. The others will be a medium-heavy. I like St. Croix rods, and I would recommend something between 6'6" and 7'3". If I had to choose one rod, it would definitely be a medium-heavy. The Victory is a good rod, but so are the BassX and Legend Tournament.

>>2838066Why is that the case? Aren't all fish interesting?
>>2838067A worm and bobber will catch sunfish most of the time. A shiny golden hook alone is sometimes all you need for bluegill when they're active. Depending on how hot it is there, you may need to go very early in the morning, before sunset and leave by 9. You can also try going at 6 or 7pm and fishing until you can't see to tie knots or see your bobber. If you can have more than one rod(if you have more than one), put one on a bobber which you'll have in the water most of the time and one that you're working a lure. This helps you keep the line with the bait in the water and not constantly fucking with it and it helps if, like me, you have ADD and can't just sit and stare at a bobber. On your second line, try a wacky rigged Senko worm. Just throw it out and jig it back in slowly. For smallys and spotted bass I like pumpkin seed and chartreuse and white. Spinnerbaits are also pretty easy to run, cast and retrieve. You can do more with them, but that's all you need to get started. For those bass I like gold willow leaf(single or double) and chartreuse and white skirts. If your water is muddy go for dark colors like black, blue and purple for all of the above.
>>2838184Thank you, anon. I think I’m going to try to home in on live worm with a bobber and senkos. I’ve not tried either of them yet. As of yet I like the beetle spinners the most as they don’t catch on the rocks constantly but as you can imagine I’m not set on anything as I’ve not caught anything.
Chinook are in the tribs boys
>>2838140If you know so much about tackle, then why ask me for advice about it?
it's my first time herei've used 4ch for ages and fishing for longer than that and only today i thought of searching for a fishing threadso, are you guys cool?
>>2838190That faggot shit will never make it as the OP image for this thread.
>>2838188You can also use those beetle spins under a bobber. You can fish most jig style lures under a bobber. Cast it out, let it settle, give it a couple light jigs and reel in the slack, let it sit for a minute and repeat(jig, reel slack and wait). The bobber suspends it off of the bottom. The jigging makes it look like a distressed bait fish. The pause makes it look like it's running low on energy and can barely manage to struggle every once in a while. It all adds up to an easy meal to the fish.Spinnerbaits are pretty good at avoiding rocks. They also ride hook up. Those beetle spins are basically a small spinnerbait with a jigging worm instead of a fixed weighted head/hook and a skirt. If you like those, you'll like spinnerbaits.
>>2838179I dunno. If I said I were catching bass they'd have a whole ass conversation with me. Fishing for bluegill is for kids, I guess, so they don't have interest in them. >>2838243We're one of the slowest threads on one of the slowest boards so take it as you will.
>>2838066>>2838179As much as people complain about millenials and video games or the iPad drones of Gen Alpha, Boomers were raised by the television. So if Al Linder Virgil Ward and Bill Dance didn’t tell them about how fun and prestigious a fish was to catch while they were parked in front of the boobtube, they can’t comprehend fishing for them.
>>2838125I’ve never owned an expride, so I couldn’t tell you. I will say that I love my Legends and am not interested in trying out different $250-350 rods just to make sure that the grass isn’t greener on the other side of the fence.
>>2838301It's all a pissing contest, I guess. I'm never going to beat my PB in this state so I'm just content to feel fish bite the line. Fishing for panfish takes me back to when I was a kid with my pawpaw so it makes me happy.

What's the verdict here on how Louisiana ranks as a fishing state? I see some people easily say it's a Top 5 state in that regard, but then others not even listing it off in the Top 15-20 states and having it middle of the road rank wise. I live in the South Central part of the state, so I'm biased. I think a few other states like Florida and Alaska easily beat it without any debate, and I think it has some arguments against it for not being Top 5 (The Northern part of the state is not exciting, coastal salt water fishing is mediocre unless you go out really far) but I don't think it's really "middle of the road" like I see other people put it. Maybe in the lower middle of Top 10 is fine (#6 or #7)?Slap some sense into me and call me retarded if I'm wrong here.
Is UV resin UV resin? Is there any reason I wouldn't want a UV resin for making jewelry or crafts for my flies?
>>2838666Catfish, bass, and Gar, you guys are world class. The saltwater drum fishery is good too. But beyond that, it’s all panfish or species from way out in the gulf, far enough off shore that no one cares that they left from Louisiana or Texas, or Mississippi. Plus, access is complicated because of the difficulty in discerning “improved” bayou vs private channels, and how many of the maps disagree on what is what. So if it’s a bass guy or a gar guy making the list, absolutely you deserve a top 10 or maybe even a Top 5. But you’re not a top 10 state for me, not enough variety, nothing like a walleye, no salmonids, far are only arguably equivalent to muskelunge, but don’t take hardbaits as reliably, etc etc.My top 10 would have to be Alaska, Florida, North Carolina, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Wisconsin, Virginia, Washington, and Montana.
>>2838684There are different strengths and hardnesses of UV resin. If the craft stuff is appropriate for what you’re doing., go for it.
>>2838687Right, I have clear thick, thin, flow and flexible from loon and a thick black from solorez. I was just at a crafting store and they had an 18 color set of UV resin for jewelry making for $30. The solorez is the only colored UV resin my local fly shop carries and they're $13 each. I'm assuming it's thick and hard drying. I'd be using it primarily for wing cases and perdigons. So definitely appropriate for my needs. I was pretty sure there shouldn't be any reason it wouldn't be good for flies. If it's for jewelry it should be water proof and non toxic. But I wasn't sure if there might be something I wasn't aware of that might be commonly known in the fly tying community. Thanks.
>>2838684>Is there any reason I wouldn't want a UV resin for making jewelry or crafts for my flies? You an be allergic to UV resin. Some people strongly recommend Solarez. It was very unpleasant for me to use. There is also a hypoallergenic Solarez, which does not exist for Loon.
>>2838697I've heard of people having issues, but they never actually say what those issues are. It hasn't been a concern for me so far. I've used the loon UV resin many times with no issues. What kinds of symptoms do people with issues get? Is it skin irritation? Breathing issues or actual anaphylaxis?

What's the best way to get under the apprenticeship of one of those old guys out on the waters so I can get some from their trove of legacy knowledge?I've been learning from scratch for just around/over a year and I'm at the point where I'm starting to need more information than what YouTube videos can give me. I also can't get local area specific knowledge from YouTube. >"Just ask one of your friends anon?"I don't have any friends (that fish) and I do mostly everything alone. I don't even need a best friend....friend, just a "Hey, I'm going out to this spot on Saturday, are you going? Let's both go and we'll check/pass by each other every 40-60 minutes" type thing. There's a local fishing club at one of the shops I purchase gear from that does weekly meetings, but I don't know much about it. Pfluegar Medalist on 8 foot 2 PC Bass Pro shops pole. Baseline on reel no leader, small tackle box included. Pole rated 5-6 pound Is this a good deal?
>>2838724Snatch itAlso that 5/6 isnt pounds its line weightA 6 weight fly line is what you want
>>2838708>I've been learning from scratch for just around/over a year and I'm at the point where I'm starting to need more information than what YouTube videos can give mei assume you're past the need of basic technical knowledge about lure knots lines and allin my opinion the rest come from knowing the behaviour of what you're fishing and the topology of places you fish, it's easier if you got a place where there's varying water levels with seasons so you can properly see depth and algae patches, tree roots underwater, shade from trees, that kind of thingi'm planning myself soonish to prepare a map of my local rivers and spend next summer prospecting good spots
>>2838725Sweet, thanks. I'm trying to get some fly fishing stuff before I move out West. I'm this anon >>2838600 and even though their pond fishing sucks out west theyre supposed to have some of the best fly fishing there is in America
I'm having serious problems with always getting birds nests when I put braided line on a shitty bass pro shop 30 dollar reel. i didnt bother to put on mono backing so is the braid slipping off cause its a cheaper reel?
>>2838704I met as fly tyer who is allergic. He can't breath and see. I think the seeing part is due to his eyes tearing and facial swelling.
>>2838721You need a loicense to fish there.
>>2838722I got a couple of Presidents and I really like the reel. I think it's the best reel in the price range and they go on sale every now and then. >>2838729Are you over filling the reel? I don't think the lack of backing really hurts anything. I only put it on because braid isn't cheap so I bulk the reel up with mono. Over filling the reel causes some nasty birds nests. Supposed to leave a 1/4 inch gap.
>>2838722I sell reels for a living. Pflueger is dogshit. Shimano is good, but in your price range, Daiwa is better. Buy a Regal.>>2838729Your problem is not because of how good / bad the reel is but because you didn't put on any backing. Some people use electrical tape, which works, but mono works better and is cheaper (means that you will use less braid where you don't need it).
>>2838722shimano sahara fj or nasci fc are better than the sedona for barely more money, maybe even the same on sales.
>>2838728Yeah out west usually has decent trout. Just dont expect the rod itsself to last very long, and the line might run out, but that reel is worth more than $35 on its own. Once you use that combo up look in to a 6 weight echo lift kit, itll be a lot nicer than the marketplace one, but i learned how to cast on a rod very similar to the one you posted. Unfortunately not a whole lot of your bass stuff will transfer over to trout but im sure youll have fun.>>2838729Youre sure you have your settngs right? Theres lotsnof tutorials online. You dont need backing, though electrical tape on yhe spool can prevent spinning.>>2838733I dont like backing ive broken off bomb casts and been able to keep fishing because I still had wnough braid to keep fishing- ran that reel for months after i lost half the line vefore respooling.
>>2838742>I dont like backing ive broken off bomb casts and been able to keep fishing because I still had wnough braid to keep fishing- ran that reel for months after i lost half the line vefore respooling.I don’t like using backing line to take up spool volume except for on older reels designed for mono before super line was a thing. I’ve got a couple of reels that don’t have enough drag to justify using anything heavier than 20 lb line, but that also would hold 150 yards of 20 lb mono, so they get 75 yards of mono and 300 yards of braid. I’m not putting 600 yards of braid on the damn thing.Newer reels with shallower spools meant for braid are a different story.
>>2838752That is a very fair usecase- most of my bigger reels like that have straight mono, but yeah a 150 yard spool of 40lb braid fills up my slx with room to spare, and my fuego would be over filled if i crammed 150 yards of 30lb braid on it. Thats not to say there isnt a time and place to put backing on those rods, if you're a pro angler who has 7 reels to fill and losing one on a given day wont hurt you because you have 6 more setups, and you respool them annually because you genuinely wear out the braid, thats fair, youll be saving a consoderable amount of money, but for normal anglers a spool of braid lasts literally years, i think the last time i spooled my fuego was like 4 years ago.
>>2838731Don't you need a fishing license in the US too? They only cost £24.50/36.80 here for the year for freshwater, no idea if fishing in a fucking puddle even counts tohugh.

I live in an awkward area where I live on the state line between three states. Fortunately, I don't fish much in the third one, so I just omitted it. Some states are brutal with their license. California is $62 for residents and $169 for non-residents. 86 euros for a citizen in just one region is kind of crazy, though. I bet the fishing is nice since there's less riff raff shitting it up. My local lake is a little trashy. Some people don't clean up after themselves. It's also heavily fished, since just about everyone fishes here to some degree. >>2838817Congrats, I love bluegill. >>2838895For me it's marlin fishing on LRF gear
>>2838892problem is... where there are lots of big panfish in teh southeast, bucket boys eat them all. I know several ponds that had some hawgs in them for decades, now they have nothing but turbo dinks. bucket boys have no concept of lifespan or limits. I'm all for eating fish, and old ones at that... but taking 30+ fish from a small pond is low IQ. or just fishing there every weekend and keeping a few is the same thing. at least eat bass if you're gonna fish like that. there is no shortage of 2-3lb bass in any given pond.
>>2838838>i hardly ever see other people than me fishing where i goThat's the dream.>>2838892They're the best. >>2838903>limitsMost states don't have a limit on bluegill and when they do, it's usually in the 30-50 range. We used to think that overpopulation lead to stunted growth but research is indicating that lower fishing pressure leads to bigger fish. Some people didn't get the memo. South Dakota and Wisconsin reduced bag limits to 10-15 panfish after they published some research with the DNR. It's kind of like how stocked trout is actually bad for native wild trout. Some states are changing regulations and others haven't. I think it was Montana doesn't stock trout anymore and saw an explosion in population of natives. As for the average citizen, 90% of them don't really care, and they don't care to learn to care.
Coho from WA state hope you gents are having some good luck.
you guys have any tackle box recommendations? i'm looking to replace the old rust toolbox with hinges slowly giving outi'm looking for one of these boxes with two plateau/tray
>>2838977light backpack with a couple plano boxes.
>>2838977I bought a 3700 size box, but now that I have more experience, I must say that I much prefer the 3600 and 3500 sizes. The thinking behind the 3700, is that it fills your bag so that it doesn't dig into your back. What ends up happening is that my backpack is harder to zip up and that I have much less room for my soft plastics. Finally, recommend a Plano Pro Latch or a Flambeau tackle box. The latches matter; shitty latches suck.
I was invited by someone I don't like to go salmon fishing, which is an 8 hour drive away. Is salmon fishing so incredible that I should go?
>>2838977no. these are outdated, bulky, and things like hooks will fall out of place when tipped.>>2838979this. just get a sling pack or backpack and then put plano 3500, 3600, or 3700s in it. much more organized, better quality, and safer. you don't even have to buy the expensive planos with the seals. I like the small $4 3500s for small stuff. one fits perfectly in my jansport fanny pack for when I'm going minimalist.
>>2839002No tell them its your uncle's hamster's birthday or something.>>2838977Yeah i use plano 3500 and 3600 boxes in a slingpack too
>>2839002Going fishing with someone you don't like sounds retarded.
>>2839012>>2839008>>2839001>>2838979ok thanks for the advice lads, i'll go for that
>>2839014Its a good system, hooks, lures, weights, etc in the boxes and then i just leave the soft plastics in the original packaging and throw them in with the boxes; if theres one i know im using a lot ill move it to my pants pocket for quick access
Guys. I live in Philly and will be going on a fishing trip with an old friend later this year. I have fly fishing gear but have never caught anything on it, tried like 6 times over the years. Anybody have advice on learning how to catch fish before I go out on this trip in the spring? Will be targeting trout.
>>2839022Are you a competent caster?
>>2838917Yeah, when you find ‘gills over 10 inches, you gotta keep it secret. I like eating the ones big enough to make a good filet, but you can’t do it regular on the same body of water, especially if it’s not a huge lake, and half-to-1 pound bass should be the real workhorse if you wanna do a big old fish fry.
say, i want to go for a bit of perch, i have small ones in my local river, i'd usually go for classic inline spinners but triple hooks can deal damage which is a shame when i hit a small pike i would like to releaseso i'm looking for an alternative that is less disposable than good old curltails, i've seen there's spoons with a single hook for trout, are these any good for perch? same question for backtail jigs
>>2839138Isn't dropshotting the best for perch?
>>2839139dunno, i'm a simple man, i mostly cast and it work fine for me but i guess i could learn other stuff
>>2839138the Mepps XD comes in single hook versions. I catch perch and chain pickerel on the size #0 one. you can also upgrade your inline spinners to single hooks, but it requires cutting the eye of the old hook off and adding a split ring. alternatively the Mepps Syclops is a good spoon that comes in single hook versions. size #00 is good for small fish like perch. even if you buy the treble hook version however, at least those come with split rings so you can easily convert to single hook without cutting the treble. lastly, you can use some small bolt cutters to cut one or two of the hook sides on trebles completely off, leaving just a single hook. but be careful because they go flying. you want to dispose of them properly or you or an animal will get it stuck in them. I crush the barbs before I cut them off just for extra measure in case they end up somewhere they shouldn't. having a double hook is way better than a treble, most of the issue with trebles is that it can "sew" the mouth shut on a fish because the hook points are in opposite directions and get both the top and bottom lip. with only two points, the points are both in a similar direction so they are much easier to get out. I actually do that on most of my hardbaits to make them more weedless.
>>2839147>mepps comes in single hook versionscool, somehow i never see it in shops>>2839139 i've read a bit about it, i'll try
am I supposed to chuck these senkos when I’m done for the day or can you reuse them? this can get expensive
>>2839212I reuse them unless they've been badly damaged by to hook or a fish. Same goes for all my soft plastics.
>accidentally cast into the edge of the cattails>fuck>start reeling it in, fortunately I am using heavy braided line so I can just rip through them>fishon.avi>decent sized pike eats the spoon>proceeds to get tangled in the cattails>completely stuck, the fish can't even pull line out when I let it go slack>it doesn't look deep...>strip down to my underwear, grab the cooler and jump into the cold ass water on a 14C evening>wade out to where the fish is>I can see it just hanging in the water limply>start ripping cattails out of the water to try and get it free>finally able to grab the fish and pull it out>the hook somehow came off the fish>shove it in the cooler>the lid has floated away>fish starts jumping>try to stop it, its teeth take a chunk out of my finger in the process>flops out of the cooler and into the water>mfwNext time I'm bringing my knife in the water and stabbing it in the fucking face as soon as I get a hold of it. >>2839217>Next time I'm bringing my knife in the water and stabbing it in the fucking face as soon as I get a hold of ityou're in for a surprise next time, these bastards are quite resilient
>>2839217Did you not have a net?
Found some dink 'eyes
>>2839292Them little cigars are always cute, but I got pretty sick of them last winter. I don’t think I caught a keeper until February, but by sheer numbers I’ve never caught so many walleyes ice fishing either.
if you were to restock on mepps cuillers, just the essentials, how much and which color/size would you get?
>>2839212use 'em until the fish or the hook eviscerates it. Most i've caught on one worm is four bass.
>>2839335go with the more plain or natural colored ones. like all gold, all silver, or the trout patterns. it is good to have one or two chartreuse, orange, or firetigers I guess. some fish prefer those bright colors like white perch and white bass. I don't really like the dressed hook versions because I always end up trimming them to thin it out anyways. the syclops in the smallest size #00 is really good, as are the XD in size #0 or #1, preferably with the single hook.. the smallest sizes are light enough to be retrieved really slow and in shallows. really depends on what kind of fish you plan to catch. smaller ones will still catch pike. the #0 XD has the perfect sized single hook for really small fish like juvenile perch and I've caught a lot of fish on it..
6" dink ditch pickle> fights very hard20" tank> fights for 5 seconds then gives upthis is why bass always feel much bigger then they actually are when you're fighting them, and big ones feel like you hooked a catfish
Last time I stopped by my local fly shop, the only coq de leon they had where these little hairline packages. I just stopped in today and found this whiting tailing pack of CDL for $20!!! I don't think I'll need to buy any more tailing feathers! Lol. I'm still looking for CDL hen feathers though, they're supposed to make better legs/gills on things like pheasant tails and prince nymphs.
>>2839374
>>2839219Yeah, I'll just grab it by the gill plate too. That should make it a bit harder for it to get away.>>2839290I do but I forgot to bring it.
I got out musky fishing and boated this 41 incher after a vicious boat-side eat on a 12 inch fly.>>2839294Im not gonna complain about catching fish, dinks are underrated>>2839343I think its cause as they get caught thry learn theyre gonna be let go and its not worth the struggle>>2839374Thats a good get
>>2839382That was an intentional gut and double chin picture.
Caught a bunch of small fish yesterday, but all of my hook extractions were messy and damaged a lot of tissue on the way out. Felt so bad for fucking up the fish I crimped the barb on my favorite spinner bait hook. Is it common for UL and trout fishers to go barbless or do I just suck it up and accept that I'm gonna fuck up a ton of fish while learning to catch and release properly?
>>2839418you have to modify lures and buy specific hooks if you really care about that. because most manufacturers will just throw on hooks with obnoxious barbs so people don't bitch about loosing fish and leave bad reviews. instead of going barbless I just buy micro barb hooks. there is a huge selection but you gotta buy from the jdm market for 95% of it. owner does make a couple for the us market. for lures, they have the owner single replacement hook x strong, but they only start at size #6 and bigger. the barb is actually appropriately sized and comes out very easy doing little damage. then they have the owner mosquito light which is for finesse presentations, or you can use it for worms and whatever. not quite as much of a micro barb as the other one but still way smaller and easier on the fish than most hooks. it's worth the money spent if you care about not harming fish you plan to release, and it just makes everything easier because you're not fighting with pliers.
>>2838688I bought the colored UV resins I was looking at. I painted the tops of the caps white with a white paint pen. Then I added a drop of the resin and cured it. It gave me the opportunity to see how the different colors looked cured and to make grabbing the color I want as simple as looking at the cap. I like them. I can already think of several patterns that should benefit from the addition of a little more color. The only one I'm glad I wasn't in need of is the black, which is grey. But I can still think of a use for that too, just not as black.
>>2839445That looks like a great score actually.
>>2839420Alright, thanks for the pointers. I'm a yuropoor, so I guess japanese shit is what I'll be on the lookout for then. I actually hit the same stream with my barbless hook just now and it went pretty well. Was able to reel in about 80% of my catches without having them jump off the hook, but I did have the current on my side to make constant line tension piss easy to achieve. I'll see how it goes once I fish another pond or lake, might just try getting my hands on some micro barbs by the time I do.
speaking of yuropoors, is it me or mepps, a french company, only sells directly in the us due to distribution rights and there's no good selling platform with every model in europe?
>>2839487The way it goes now is: you get a Chinese catalogue with models (for hooks, bait, rods, any type of fish). You make your choice and trademark it. You spend most of your money on promovideos, instagram and forum posts and hope it takes off. Any brand, any type of fishing, anywhere on earth. It's all designed and made by some guys in a shithole suburb of Shangai, who've never seen a river or a pond in their lives. Let alone a fish.
>>2839418I legally have to pinch my barbs where I live but I still manage to fuck up fish anyway.
>>2839418>Is it common for UL and trout fishers to go barblessVery much common, you really dont need barbs.>>2839445Looks like a good get>>2839503It happens unfortunately, all you can do is try to manage it.
Is there literally any option to escape being weekend only when you work a 8/4 or 9/5 other than being okay with ~2 hour sessions or taking the night fishing pill? By the time I would get to the lake, setup the kayak and launch, it would already getting close to 6 at that time. >"Why are you afraid of extending a little past sunset? Just fish a bit after and you won't have to deal with a short session and you'll get the night bites as well."Not an option. That would get me killed at night when I accidentally run into some gator I couldn't see or something fucked me up in the dark when I land back at shore and have to tear down.
>>2839541Do you really need to fish more than 2 hours on a weeknight? I'd just kayak the weekends and hit up ponds and creek on the weekdays. No need to launch the Kayak. I keep a rod in my truck just to hit up some places when I'm driving around.
>>2839541if you set limits for yourself then ask us "is there any option..." the answer is no. you already explained it all. what secret did you expect us to find? Is fishing your hobby or is it your life? If it's your life then figure out how to fish while getting paid. If it is your hobby then be happy you can fish.
>>2839541Find a job that allows for more flexible hours. I know someone that does in home help for disabled people. He works for two days, 48 hours including sleep time, and has the rest of the week off unless he picks up extra shifts. So, there are jobs out there that you may be able to find that allow for fishing outside of Saturday and Sunday. You can also try and find a job that is open 7 days a week, work Saturday and Sunday and have two week days off. Less weekend traffic that way. Other than that, unless you invent some sort of time machine, no.
>>2839541you can get blown out on anything if you do it too much. it's good in a way that you can't do it all the time. I often spend more time just paddling and exploring in my kayak than fishing. mainly because I lived down the street from multiple fishing spots and could do it every afternoon. just pick one or two weekdays and actually go immediately before or after work. fall/winter means less sunlight anyways. do you even spend all day in your kayak? when I go on the weekend(almost every weekend year-round) I literally stay out for at least 5 hours. by that time I'm done anyways.
>>2839541Why not just get better lighting?
so i've done nothing but spinfishing my whole life, how do i into flyfishing? it look unnecessarily complicated and mostly practiced by pretentious fagsi got some old reel that probably belonged to my uncle and a plain bamboo rod that probably belonged to my great grandpa
>>2839626Follow the insect hatches. Each month different species will hatch, sometimes massively from spring to autumn. You can find timetables online for your part of the world/species. Make or buy flies that resemble those species ("match the hatch") and simply go fishing. And get good polaroid sunglasses. The more polaroid factor the better.
>>2839626Watch videos on casting. Learn to cast normal, then learn to roll cast, learn to double haul. Everything else is whatever with fly fishing, but casting is the most frustrating part of learning. >bamboo rodHopefully you don't break it. Old bamboo is nice, but they're fragile when they're old and delaminate regardless of if you're careful with it. You'd almost be better off getting some cheap beater fly rod off Amazon.
>>2839626I'm taking a shit before going back to work. I sell fly rods, among other things. I'm a big fan of Echo. I would recommend an Echo Lift and using the reel you've got. Your bamboo rod will be too old and fragile. Fly fishing absolutely can be pretentious, was just talking to a customer about it today. Tell me where you are located and what you will be fishing for, and I will be able to give you a better tailored recommendation.
>>2839670>>2839635>>2839632>match the hatch>Watch videos on casting. Learn to cast normal, then learn to roll cast, learn to double haulnoted, will try, thanks>Old bamboo is nice, but they're fragile when they're old and delaminate regardless>Your bamboo rod will be too old and fragileit's a plain bamboo, not a relaminated one, anyway better use it than let it take dust, i got two other for spin, one plain and one laminated that are about the same age and they're doing fine so far>Tell me where you are located and what you will be fishing for, and I will be able to give you a better tailored recommendation.small european river with mostly pikes and perch, a bit of zander, also black bass, catfish, and trout but i never see these, probably since i'm far upstreamaiming for perch seem like a good starting point to learn flyfishing
>>2839679>>2839626Im going to add one more strong suggestion to switch to a more modern rod and religate the bamboo to a wall piece for fear of damaging what sounds to be a family herilume at this point. If you can afford 120 usd get an echo lift, if you demand it be cheap, the yellow eagle claw fly rods are reasonable.European perch should be a good starter fish, a lot of principles from spin gear will transfer overI imagine you'd do well with wooly buggers and clouser minnowsCasting is 100% the most important part of fly fishing
> boatfag blows by me on my kayak thinking he's cheeky> he doesn't know that I've been waiting for someone to do that all day because I like playing in the wakes
>>2839679>small european river with mostly pikes and perch, a bit of zander, also black bass, catfish, and trout but i never see these, probably since i'm far upstreamNot him but an 8wt fly rod with floating line and 2x leader will take care of 90% of the fish you're likely to encounter. I spend most of my time wading around ponds and lakes chasing after panfish and bass. The trout purists don't want you to know this but fly fishing is for more than trout.
>>2839682>for fear of damaging what sounds to be a family herilume at this point.it's fine, we have plenty of older stuff to cling on, we're a pragmatic family, tools are made to be used>the yellow eagle claw fly rods are reasonable.i'll see if my local backwater shop got that>>2839697>an 8wt fly rod with floating line and 2x leader will take care of 90% of the fish you're likely to encounter.isn't 8wt one of the highest line weight for freshwater rods? biggest pike i ever got on my spot was 1.1 meter and i don't think these would go for flies, or am i mistaken?but yeah i'll probably just panfish for perch with italso i got most of the basic theory for the line part, but what about the fly, if i remember well there's some that sink and some that float right?
>>2839679I don't know much about fishing in Europe, but I will say that fishing for different species requires different rods. But based on what you're saying, I would recommend a 5 WT. I never recommend 5 WT rods. especially not for my area, but a 5 WT might not be so bad for someone looking to keep things cheap and target several species. I would definitely advise against the 8 WT the other guy was recommending. It's like bringing a marlin rod for bluegill. You will need fly line. Spending $50+ will get you a good fly line; getting something cheaper is a good idea to figure out if you like the sport, but I will say that casting nicer fly line is much more fun and enables you to cast better. Brands like RIO and Scientific Anglers are good brands that I have experience with, but I also hear good things about Airflo and Cortland. You will also need tippet and leader. I mostly fish 5X and 4X leaders with the corresponding tippet. I never go beyond 3X, even when I am fishing for bass and pike. I like tippet rings a lot, but they are not necessary.
>>2839715>isn't 8wt one of the highest line weight for freshwater rods?Yeah, but I can also use it for salt water if I want to because it is an option where I live. I have a 5-6wt I learned on but I've found the 8wt is truly a utilitarian size and it lives in the back of my truck with a set of hip waders. >biggest pike i ever got on my spot was 1.1 meter and i don't think these would go for flies, or am i mistaken?Streamers are another kind of fly which are generally larger and meant to imitate bait fish, amphibians, small mammals, larger insects or crustaceans. Poppers are also fun. >if i remember well there's some that sink and some that float right?Correct. >>2839716>It's like bringing a marlin rod for bluegill.More like a 12 gauge for dove. It works, is fun and you can't stop me.
>>2839721>>2839716so, if i where to use only a small insect like floating fly for perch i should avoid anything big like a pike and am free to go for 5wt?the old rod i got is about 3,5 meter in three part so i assume it can handle a fairly good line weight
>>2839724>so, if i where to use only a small insect like floating fly for perch i should avoid anything big like a pike and am free to go for 5wt?Go for it. >the old rod i gotPlease don't break your grandfather's fly rod.
>>2839726ok last question, how much of a crime is it if i stick picrel between the leader and the tippetanyway thanks everyone for the infos
>>2839715I use an 11 weight for musky and esox will crush large streamersAn 8 weight is comparable in power tp a medium light spinning rod>>2839729Very big crime it will cause your shit to hinge instead of roll out which will kill casting power and cause knots, it will slap the water, and d it will sink your flies and line. If you insist on some kind of connection like that, look in to tippet rings for leader/tippet connection, or no knot fas snaps for fly to tippet. Or better yet just learn how to tie a knot.
>>2839729What is with people and swivels lmao. Just buy fly line with a welded loop and buy a pack of leaders with welded loops then connect the two and apply tippet as you run out. You can use tippet rings if you need to. Personally I don't like them but do whatever just don't tie tippet to tippet. Tie tippet to the leader.
>>2839729>how much of a crime is it if i stick picrel between the leader and the tippetBig crime. Just learn how to tie a surgeon knot.
At what level of experience should I even think about going to any tournament? From what I can tell, it's just a busier day of normal fishing, but you just have to report back in your catch limit (with the restrictions) at the maximum size by a certain time. Can I just pay the entry fee, pretend it's a normal day of fishing and just enjoy a good placement if I'm hot that day? Is it all just a money sink in the end and I should avoid it all?
>>2839737I think you misread, i did too, at first. Hes asking about affixing tippet to leader, nog leader to line. Otherwise yeah youre right.>>2839770Ive never enjoyed tournaments, there's always guys who are too serious about it and spoil all the fun. Its a money sink that youre lucky to break even on. Fishing tournaments arent about fun or fishing, theyre about winning and bragging. There are better ways to stroke your ego.
>>2839776>Its a money sink that youre lucky to break even on.So, it sounds like I should just take the registration money and use that on extra gas/gear and ignore all of it entirely. I learned my lesson on money pit hobbies escaping from TCGs before it was too late.
>>2839736>>2839743>>2839737>Very big crime it will cause your shit to hinge instead of roll out which will kill casting power and cause knots, it will slap the water, and d it will sink your flies and line.good thing i askedjust trying to figure how to undo the line for storage transport, or do you guys just leave it on the rod even when split and cut the tippet whenever you change the fly?would a loop to loop knot do it for leader to tippet?
>>2839778Yeah pretty much>>2839783You can, thats how i do bite tippet on my muskh leaders, but you really wont be changing the tippet on your leader much, youll mostly be swapping between fully different full length leaders at the leader to fly line connection and leaving tippet as is and changing it as needed. The only reason its practical on my mysky setup is i tie about a foot of leader to each musky fly then change flies with that loop/loop connection. If youre just tying normal mono or flouro to normal flies its way easier to cut and re tie.
>>2839783You can leave a fly rod totally rigged up during transport provided that you have a rod locker, and you don't. Sometimes transporting my fly rod fully assembled works just fine, but sometimes, it gets jostled around a lot. Last trip, I put a huge bend into the butt section while moving things around. From now on, I will always at least break the rod in half before going someplace, unless I'm only driving for a minute.Snaps and swivels can make sense in certain situations, like when using a metal leader or throwing streamers that tend to roll.
>>2839787>>2839786alright, thanks for the answersi should have enough info to be the best fly panfisher in my backwater spot (there's only me)
>>2839791Watch the orvis fly casting guides on youtube and practice in the grass before you go fishing for the first time
>>2839807yeah i saw these among a few others, thanks again
>>2839811Youre very welcomePlease do report backAnd remember fly fishing is an arcane dark art, its weird, its autistic, and its about the journey. Itll be every bit as frustrating as rewarding, just learn to find your zen, and practice casting all you can, the sooner you develop good muscle memory the better
>>2839822it feel like you're overselling it to me>Please do report backdon't expect it too soon, i dunno if i'll be home before the temperatures drop, after that perch tend to stay at the bottom and dropshotting is the only way that work around my parts, dunno if american perches behave the sameas for the rest fishing is closed in february/march/april with a degree of variation between species because it's the reproduction period, i'll probably get some gear around christmas, set it up and get comfortable with the casting, and do the real thing in march
>>2839837>stay at the bottomweighted flies and sinking lines can get you deep
>>2839842i'll keep things simple for now
Caught in a lake in Marlboro CT
I got my second Smitty's box in the mail today! I'm looking forward to tying these more than the ones I got last month. The beginner pattern is a Hot Head Leech. Materials include: size 8 streamer hooks, 6/0 uni thread in black, size 12 pearl flash mylar(in next picture, I put the two flashes in the wrong picture :p ), rabbit zonker strips(I haven't worked with this yet, looking forward to it!), spikey dubbing in tan and nickel beads in chartreuse and hot orange.
>>2839868The intermediate pattern is the Double Decker Hopper. I've tied plenty of foam hoppers and there aren't any new materials in this one, so they should be pretty easy to tie. Materials included are: size 10 streamer hooks, 6/0 uni thread in brown, double decker foam(two pieces of 2mm foam glued together), rubber leg material, crystal flash(in picture above), a nice looking chunk of elk hair and 2mm yellow indicator foam.I'll tie some of each of these tonight and post pictures.
>>2839868>>2839871looks like youre gonna have some fun
>>2839868I did the three on the right(natural color) first. I was making the collar space way to large. And it's been a while since I've done a dubbing noodle and forgot to pull stack the dubbing to get it all running in the same direction. So the collars are a bit ugly. But should still catch fish. I'd gotten into the rhythm by the time I switched to the olive zonker three. And I'd taken the time to look over the first three and saw my mistakes. I think they came out pretty good! Nice looking collars. The only slight modification I made to the recipe they provided was; they suggested adding super glue to the thread on the hook before wrapping the mylar. I don't have any super glue. So, instead, I used some thick UV resin after I wrapped the mylar. Which should achieve the same desired result of preventing it from unwrapping the first time it gets a bite.*Brass beads, not nickel.I like this one. I haven't gotten around to actually fishing streamers yet. But I think is should be pretty effective when I do. They'd probably work well on a float-n-fly setup too. I hear that's a very popular technique for small mouth and spotted bass in the lakes around here.>>2839894Indeed! :)
>>2839899yeah those should work great. uv resin over the mylar body will absolutely give you the durability improbement you're after, and those will absolitely all fish. they look like theyd do well on a dead drift or otherwise under a bobber, swung through current, or stripped.
>>2839871And here are the double decker hoppers. I've got one more in the vise and I'm planning on making one more after that. But my UV light needed to be recharged, it wasn't curing the resin as quickly or thoroughly as it should. So...break time! I like this hopper pattern. I think the most difficult part is making the segmented tail. The first couple segments are easy enough. But the last couple require switching the bobbin to the other hand to tie them in behind the hook. Not too difficult, but takes some concentration. Everything else I've done before more or less. They look pretty buggy to me! And it's the perfect time of year for them!I'm subbing UV resin for supper glue again. This time I'm using flow, as I'm just adding it to the thread of the under body as a final step to add durability to the thread.>>2839900Thanks! With the temperatures finally starting to drop, I'm looking forward to getting out and doing some fishing in the next few months!
>>2839923Yeah swapping your bobbin hand like that can be annoyong. Might be less annoying to start tge fly, start the segmebts, then for the back ones take the hook out of the vise and grab it backwards, then you can do the back segments with your dominant hand- youd pnly have to remember to wrap backwards. You could also probably get away just not segmenting the back, i doubt the fish would care. They look.good though!
>>2839923Nice tie, but UV resin should only see limited use, and it most definitely should not be used for floating flies. UV resin is good for scud backs, wing cases, and the like, but in most cases, you should use head cement, nail polish, and super glue. Other adhesives are cheaper, faster, lighter, and more effective.
>>2839963Its fine on foam flies, if anything itll just help it keel
What are the downsides to using heavy jigheads for casting further on soft lures?
>>2839972can't think of any, now i use a heads with a size that fit the lure regardless of weight, otherwise the lure is probably going to look unnatural alternatively you can also cast further using a longer rod
>>2839963Does it really add that much mass compared to super glue? I'm only using a drop or two to soak into the threads. Tiny drops, as little or less in volume than I'd be adding if I were using super glue. I've been using it on all of my heads, including drys. I thought that's what flow was made for. I could see the thick stuff adding some extra mass, but I only use that on flies I want to sink.
>>2839971I don't disagree about the keel, but UV resin is overused. A heavier gauge hook would do the same job.>>2839984Don't take my word for it. Listen to what professional fly tyers like Kelly Galloup and Charlie Craven have to say about it. I'm not expert tyer, but their arguments convinced me.
>>2840004Whats their argument about uv resin summarized? I dont want to sit through an hour of kelly rambling to get to his bit on uv resin
>>2840007>>2840007NTA... I just watched Charlie's video on it and that is his argument, it's over used. lol. He says "(sic)it adds weight, we've been tying dry's over 120 years and they didn't use head cement or resin, come on guys think about it" That's it. He doesn't actually make an argument or compare mass of glue/cement vs resin. He just states it as a fact. He doesn't advocate for using anything on dry flies, just says get gud son. A very persuasive argument. I can see why the other anon was so convinced.
>>2840032I tied two more and didn't use any resin. Weight of the two I just tied: .295g and .300g I then weighed the 4 I made yesterday: .299g, .300g, .297g and .284g. There's more variation in mass from the difference in the individual materials used than in the light coat I put on my thread. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
>>2840044Added the resin and re-weighed, no change. And I'm weighing down the the thousandth of a gram on a grain scale.
Damn i guess i gotta tie a nail knot now>>2840032Fuck thats it? Kelly thinks its too modern and overused? Nylon and gsp thread and foam are fine, krystal flash, flashabou, and ice dub are fine, rubber legs are fine, fiberglass and graphite fly rods are fine, plastic fly lines are fine, foam and plastic strike indicators are fine, none of which existed 150 years ago, but uv resin is where we draw the line? At least when tim flagler stop using it it was for the real reason of him having negative reactions to the resin>>2840044>>2840047Thats less difference than i would have expected, i wouldve thought a drop of resin weighed at least .003 grams. Hail science!
>>2840063i guess you should be happy it broke now rather than when you had something hooked
>>2840100It may actually have been like that when i caught my last fish, i only noticed recently and havent touched the combo since j got off my buddy's boatRegardless, yeah, im glad i caught it before it cost me a fish
>>2840044Cool. One day, I'm going to try weighing with and without resin.
>>2840063>>2840142The cap I have on my loon flow resin is a micro tip. Compared to a drop from my thick resin, I'd guess I'd need ~10 drops from the flow to equal one thick drop in volume
>>2840063It's Charlie Craven that think's it's too overused. Kelly doesn't really say anything negative about UV resin in his video about Cements, Varnishes and Resins. He does say it takes getting used to and he's just never taken the time. He's been using the cements and varnishes this long and doesn't seethe need to make the switch. He does say that that's not a knock on resin, just his habits are engrained. He also mentions that when he first tried them, he didn't have a good UV light and that he always got mixed results. But after buying a newer rechargeable light, that problem completely went away. And he mentions price. They are definitely more expensive. The same volume of Zap-A-Gap that would cost maybe $7 is +20 for UV resin. Which, if you're a budget tyer, would certainly be a good argument. But overall I don't think he has a negative opinion of it, at least in the context of this 5yo video. He doesn't mention dry flies at all in that video.
>>2840154>charlie cravenMy bad i misread or mistyped, not sure which. Regardless he better be tying with silk thread snd bamboo rodsI will agree however that nothing beats good technique. I largely dont use head cements except in larger predator streamers where the fly has to be tooth proof, 2 or 3 whip finishes does so much for durability. As for cost, i use cheap amazon resin, 200 grams is like $15>picThat said no one has to use it. I appreciate kellys admission of "i just cant get used to it" and he's 100% right a good light makes a world of difference
What a dead thread. Not a reply in a day. Yesterday, I went creek fishing. I have not been doing well the past couple weeks, so I forced myself to get out. I caught bass cast after cast. After I caught the first fish on my first cast, I knew it was a good omen and not a bad one. I also caught a couple sauger.
>>2840161>As for cost, i use cheap amazon resin, 200 grams is like $15That's pretty good. 1g of water is 1ml. So that's ~200ml. 20x the size of the Loon and Solarez bottles I have. Even if you lost half the bottle to waste it would still be cheaper. I'll keep this in mind the next time I'm in the market for it. Can you thin it? >I will agree however that nothing beats good technique.Agreed. I'm not adding anything to "fix" poor tying mistakes, just adding a little durability or a little shine.>That said no one has to use it.Also agreed. But I don't think they shouldn't be afraid of it either.
best sub $300 size 2-3000 reel?
went for carp and caught 3 breams instrad
>>2840347instead*
Big Crappie tonight.
quick question, you guys eat what you fish or do you just catch and release for sport?i personally keep the big enough fishes i get, it sort of compensate the fishing license cost
>>2840347Why is its mouth blue?
>>2840406I catch way more fish than I want to clean, so I do a lot of C&R. I do try to eat wild caught fish a couple times a month though.
>>2840406I almost never keep fish. Too much work to hold on to them, clean, and cook. I really want to get into it, but I'm waiting on a friend to do a catfish catch and cook with.
>>2840406Sometimes I keep them, but most of the time I release them. I used to always keep them when I was younger. But then I moved to Texas and the lakes all had heavy metal, so they said not to eat them. So I got into the habit of catch and release. Now that I live near clean, fresh, fast moving water, I can keep them, but I'm just not in the habit anymore. I often plan on keeping a fish for lunch, but when I'm actually out there and I land a fish, I have it back in the water so fast, I forget I meant to keep it. I do occasionally keep some, usually panfish, when I bring out my nieces and nephews.
>>2840409antiseptic spray, he was bleeding so i sprayed him, helps with the recovery, essential for carp fishing
>>2840347many such cases
>>2840464they were pretty atleast, pic related was s small one but i 3 ones were bigger so actually it was 4 of them
>>2840465man typing on phone is retarded>was a small one but the 3*
>>2840443>Too much work to hold on to themi just carry around a rag and a fabric bag to grab and carry the fish, it's not very professional but it work and i just have to stuff it in a pocket>clean, and cookscale it, cut belly from ass to head, get the guts out, stick it on a grill or a pan, and voilai get that it can look intimidating the first time but it's easy reallyafter that you can learn filleting, ways to slice up big fishes to keep some in the freezer
>>2840465Do you cast and leave it with carp, or check regularly?
>>2840493Leaving them, usually i dont catch them because i use bigger boilies but wanted to try smaller ones for once
>>2840482>i just carry around a rag and a fabric bag to grab and carry the fish,That's not my concern. I don't want the fish to go bad. I want to catch the fish, and cut and bleed ASAP for the best taste. I fish to fish, so I don't want to catch a fish and then leave right away. Probably OCD, but that's how I feel about as someone who hasn't really done it and comes from an anti-catch-and-cook family.>i get that it can look intimidating the first time but it's easy really This is exactly it. I just want to try it out with a friend first.
>>2840552>I want to catch the fish, and cut and bleed ASAP for the best taste. This is mostly a meme. Ikejime in general is a meme. Put your fish on a stringer while you're fishing, thump them on the head and pull the gills to kill and bleed them and put them in a bag for the ride home. Bring ice if you're driving more than half an hour. Gut and scale them when you get home and cook or put in the fridge and cook within a day or two. It's really not hat complicated. Stop watching anime and thinking you're learning something.
>>2840552>I don't want the fish to go bad.it doesn't go bad that fast, generally you got two good hours after you killed it with nothing to keep it, up to a whole day with a cooleri fish close to home so i can just walk home with the fish and come back, but if you don't just stick a cooler with ice in your caronce your fish is scaled and gutted you can put it in your fridge but i usually cook it the same day or stick it in a freezer right after cleaning it
>>2837747For me, it's the Rock Bass
>>2840558I don't do icky jimmy, and I only like Neongenesis Evangelion. I watched part of Death Note and quit after a little while because it was so fucking retarded. Stringers are nice, but they are not so nice if you go to one spot, make a few casts and then move, covering hundreds of yards of water. That's how I like to fish, hence why I'm not much of a catfisherman. If you read the rest of my post, you will have seen that my OCD in regard to catch and cook is because I lack experience. I'm a basement dweller, and I come from a family that has no interest in the /out/doors or self-reliance. My environment and upbringing is against catch and cook even though I want to do it. To be fair, I've done trout from stocked ponds, but that's it.>>2840561>it doesn't go bad that fast, generally you got two good hours after you killed it with nothing to keep itI know you're right about this. I just have a hangup. For me, a pond would be a perfect place to get fish from, but I have been told not to do this on account of bad taste. I'm someone who doesn't really like fish but can enjoy some species.
>>2840570>but I have been told not to do this on account of bad tastebullshit for the most part, this is true to a small extend for big game animals like deers but will be unnoticeable depending on how it's cookedi don't think it apply to freshwater fishes
>>2840570in case i missread and you meant fishes from ponds can have a taste, it depend on the size of the pond, the quality of the water, the specie, and the age of the fishin a large pond with clean water you'll be fine, i got a pond near my home and everything out of it taste just like from the river, i got once a pike that had a slight taste but it was pretty oldi think it's mostly an issue for carp and catfish and that kind of fish that feed on the bottom
>>2840584My state is very low on the list for water quality due to agriculture. Most ponds are not in good shape.
>>2840593>Most ponds are not in good shape.that's a shame, but i guess you could give it a try just in casehere a lot of ponds are water reserve for farmers to water the crops so when they empty it for crops they pump underground water back in so the water is alway pretty clean
>>2840593Are you near the sea?
>>2840651No. I live in Iowa, the leading state for cancer. I don't know what state has the worst drinking water, but I know Iowa is pretty bad. We have runoff from the very intensive agriculture that goes on here. Lots of crops and lots of animals.
>>2840661What's Iowa like apart from the cancer? It looks like there's fuck all there.
>>2840650Yes what is Iowa like apart from the rampant brain famine? Certainly it's not a governance problem on the part of the potato king.Hey mate, you may think you're clever looking in on people's minds. And besides the fact that you've gone psychopathically sideways mentally to do so, you may find that your grasp of language has become a little "country" if you follow my meaning. Your every utterance here is a cancer, but not an Earthly one. But you can't think past your pollo enchilada at lunch so you wouldn't notice me ashamed to count your opinion amongst humans.>>>yeah bro this crack cocaine is legit safe it won't last more than a dayGB meets ZL v KT A.R.G.!
>>2840665That's what we want you to think. If you know, you know.
i read shore casting in high lakes in washington isnt good without a float tube, on account of the shallowness of most lakes. anyone got knowledge on this? fishing while backpacking sounds really cool but im sure as shit not going to carry a goofy ass floatie around
>>2840705what's the worst thing that can happen? getting your tackle stuck on the bottom maybe, avoid treble hook spinner and use these hull shaped jig heads for soft lures, or go fly fishing
I fish therefore something-something a yam. King Salmon apparently tastes the best, but I honestly cannot tell the difference between salmon.
>>2840713well i think its cause the lakes are too shallow and gently sloped you cant get to the fish. and trees
Made a few bucks today. Looks like fish are finally biting around here.
>>2840849Also caught this fatass.
Have to go to work instead of fishing... fuck my disgusting freak incel life
>>2840850>completely covered in sandRIP
>>2840916...its a carp
Zoomed around Boston Harbor for 8 hours yesterday and caught nothing but the pogies I was using for bait. Where the fuck are all the stripers and blues?
>>2840961Im not super familiar with the timing of east coast stripers and bluefish but isnt that still about a month out? Shouldnt you still be looking for flukes? If theyre anywhere id expect them to be well off shore
>>2840971I've had success with the bottom feeders all summer, especially tautog, but was taking a couple visiting friends out yesterday. It would've been nice to land a striper for them since it's the prize fish around here. All the migratory fish are generally around until mid-October, when the first storms (Nor'easters) start to arrive. Probably just got unlucky. It happens. As you can see from the pic it was an eerie, foggy day
Never using a jighead again unless I'm catching something to eat.>jighead with shrimp>catch baby shark, stuck all the way down his throat and the mean barb hook cant be removed>jighead with plastic>get flounder hooked in back of the throat with the mean hook>bleeding everywhere looks like he's not gonna make it>just kill him at least I can eat himEvery time I catch fish with jigheads it just maims them. It's circle hooks only from now on unless I'm keeping the fish
