yay
>>2841957I did it, I finally caught a yellowtail from my kayak. It's an absolute beast weigh in at around 52 lb, as well. One of the worker near the beach said it's the biggest he have seen being brought in from a kayak
Today, I went back to a fishing spot where I fell off a cliff before. I caught a few chubs and what looked like a white sucker that self-released before I could get it in hand. I then went to an adjacent property to ask for permission to fish, but the neither was the landowner hone nor was there a mailbox, just a gate and security camera signs, so I stuck my letter between some wood. Not a good omen for getting access. I went to a nearby spot and caught a few stocker rainbows. The fight was fun, though.
>>2841957Nice!>>2841992Wow! Great catch!
>>2841992Yum
>>2841992Did that thing take you for a ride when you hooked him? Sounds fun as fuck on a kayak
>>2842056It definitely move me a bit but not too crazy far. It is mostly a vertical fight. I have to keep gaining line as much as I can so it doesn't stay in the bottom for too long and wrap me up in a kelp. I actually ended up on top of some sort of lobster/crab trap and it was a miracle it didn't wrap me around the trap
>>2841992that's fucking awesome.
>>2842065>It is mostly a vertical fight. That sounds much scarier on a 'yak lolI'm super jealous, now I'm going to try my 'yak on the ocean.
>>2842078The scariest part was the landing. It felt daunting when I finally saw color and realized how big it is. It's my first yellowtail too and it happens to be quite bigger than usual. I gaffed a smaller yellowtail for another guy before from a kayak but never solo. When I finally got it up, all 52 lb of it was thrashing on my lap and it took 3 tries for my spike to hit the brain since the head is so big that I am not sure where the brain is. The body laid on my lap for a while until I move toward an anchored boat and asked those guy help me reposition the fish off my lap toward the bow because I couldn't do it myself because the kayak pedal was in the way as well
>>2842082Hope it was delicious. That's a hell of a catch, but insane for a solo kayak. Glad he didn't tip you.
KVD, it’s not a Florida bimbo, but please see attached Canadian Laker Cutie
Got a late start to my fishing today. Decided to chill at the family cabin until a bit before noon. I intended on going to one spot but ended up at another along the way. I left after a while after finding it to be not so fishable with my rubber boots, so then, I began making my way to my original destination. But I got cramps. The shits were coming on, so I diverted to an isolated fishing area that I thought was nearby. I made it in time and shat in the trees. It really is amazing how flies are drawn to shit, liquid, caramel shit. I left that place because I didn't want to do a 3 mile hike, and so, I found a new creek that looks really fishy. I just caught a sucker, but I plan on returning. Mosquitoes were awful.
he gon fry up good n plenty
>>2842107do you fry the whole fillet or do you slice it in slats and bread them before frying?
what do you bring when backpacking if youre planning on cooking up a trout
>>2842109only if I am cooking a lot of them at once and want to maximize space without them overlapping too badly. used to just remove head + skin and fry that, ribcage included. was not difficult to take the flesh off the bones when done but ofc bone-in means there are bones. now after i do the whole head + skin rip thing I take a fillet knife to get it off the main skeleton and I have some clippers I use to disconnect the ribcage and shit. end up having just the two fillets no bones and I do fry those whole most of the time. ran out of breading recently so I've actually only been frying them in sea salt + ground pepper + some roasted garlic and peppers spice i had laying around. now that i bought some garlic butter & chives flavored breading ive been having a good time shaking it up in that then frying.pic is muskie some fambly friends caught recently it is not my catch i do not have further info beyond the pic
>>2842119>ran out of breading recently so I've actually only been frying them in sea salt + ground pepper + some roasted garlic and peppers spice i had laying aroundthe old way milk + flour also work
>>2842120idk at least for the catfish fillets all that seemed really superfluous. i been hearing some homies say the egg is extraneous bare minimum
>>2842112Ghee or other neutral oil (I like how Ghee doesn’t spill in my portage pack), a pan, salt, pepper, lemon juice powder. Maybe some Club Crackers if I’m feeling extravagant.
I caught a new species for the first time by accident the other day, and today I caught five more of them somewhat intentionally. It's fun catching new things, it's too bad there's only a few fish left in my area I haven't targeted successfully.
>>2842214What species?
>>2842216Chiselmouth.
A tenkara club has been created at a school in my honor. Through my evangelism, I converted one man who has now converted 3 adults and 8 children.
>>2842256Finally got some rain in my area so the water levels and current are a bit better. I'll have a chance to really try out my new rod and hopefully catch somethingIf you were giving me advice in the last thread i will have a lot of opportunities to fish in winter. I'm near a few stocked rivers with decent wild populations as well
>>2842262Yep, I'm the same guy. In conditions that consist of high or stained water, I recommend using bead head nymphs, something to get down quickly. Perdigons are the most famous, but I haven't had any luck with them, instead preferring zebra midges, caddis nymphs, scuds, pheasant tails, and leeches (a bit bigger than the others). It's good to have a variety of colors (light, bright, dark), but dark is generally preferred in stained water. The other good category of fly to fish in these conditions are terrestrials. A lot of them get washed into the water. Think beetles, hoppers, and ants. Worms also work well.
>>2842086That's the first normal woman I've seen in these threads.
>>2842289I went out this morning for a bit with a kebari and honestly never had less fun fishing on a windless dayOne bad cast and the entire furled line and tippet turned into a knotI loved the idea of these poles for backpack camping but don't think it's for me. I can't get the cast down at all. From what I've read the oscillating and knotting up is from overcasting but it feels very uncomfortable to do like is suggested
>>2842306NTA.. Try level line. Dragontail 3.5 is what I use. I never liked furled leaders. And I've never used a kebari fly. I just use regular flies. The cast is pretty simple once you figure it out. If you've used a traditional fly rod, it's just a roll cast. Bring the rod up so it's just behind your ear. You'll see a loop form when you're at the correct back point. Now bring it forward, like you were throwing a paper airplane. Not too gentle, not too forceful, but with a stop where it's going to fly straight and not immediately down. If you can imagine a clock face, the arc is 10 to 2. When you get it right, the line will roll out and land straight. You can drift dry flies or tight line wet flies. I've had lots of success with both. I do have two different line setups for them though. For dry flies, it's level line as long as the rod with 2-3 feet of 4x tippet. For tight lining, It's 1 foot short of the rod length to a 15in section of 0x sighter tippet to a tippet ring and ending in 2-3ft of 4x flouro tippet. It's fun, when I don't feel like bringing one or more of my other fly setups. But very limited when compared to any of my other setups. So I reserve it to small creek fishing only. If I'm fishing anywhere I'll want to make a cast longer than 10ft, I'm bringing a real fly rod. Bow and arrow casts are also easy and useful in situations where you don't have room for a roll cast. You can pendulum swing it too. That's great for getting water that's close to shore. But I'd focus on getting that roll cast down if you have the clearance. Once you have that down, everything else will be easier. And the only time I back cast is to dry off a dry fly. It's otherwise completely unnecessary for tenkara fishing.
>>2842310Tenkara Jesus here. 4x tippet is generally regarded as too heavy for most tenkara rods. 5x and finer is what you need to make sure you don't break the rod.
enlighten me, isn't tankara just japanese hipster fly fishing?
>>2842323A similar method is used historically and currently in northern italy as well as other asian cuntrees I wanted something to pack small and take camping>>2842310Ive only used a normal fly rod a handful of times but tenkara casting is a lot harder to meI will try level line and i have tons of nymphs and san juan worms

>>2842338Looks like Shad
>>2842323It’s cane pole fly fishing. Similar traditions exist elsewhere in the world, but >thing: Japan :0And also the traditions in the southern Alps or the Appalachia’s did decline much more significantly once conventional fly gear became widespread, while the Nips exhibited their noteworthy cultural conservatism with their cane pole fly fishing tradition.
>>2842347>while the Nips exhibited their noteworthy cultural conservatism with their cane pole fly fishing tradition.i feel like similar missplaced pride in the west is the reason automatic fly reels or new techs stopped being a thing for most and now good ol' plain reel is the standard
Lost my PB lake trout at the boat last week (10 lbs or so), because my net wasn’t big enough and he flopped out of it. Anyone have a rec. for a rubber mesh light weight folding net? My current net has a 14 inch long opening and I’d like 19 or bigger, but it’s hard to tell what’s chinky garbage and what’s decent.
>>2842318Yeah, that's total BS. I've been tenkara fishing for several years and caught lots of fish with it. I can look at where I want the fly to go and put it right there. All on 4x. I hear trad fly fishers say the same thing about their setups. Because they think anything bigger will spook fish. That's also BS. I use 4x on size 18 hooks all the time. As Skid says, use 4x unless it's too big to fit through the eye of the hook or you need something bigger for bigger flies. If you like 5x, cool, you do you. But to say you need it or you'll break your rod is totally wrong.
>>2842331>Ive only used a normal fly rod a handful of times but tenkara casting is a lot harder to meRun me through your cast. Try and describe how you're trying to cast. And I'll try and give you pointers based on that. >i have tons of nymphs and san juan wormsPerfect. Have you tight line nymphed or only under a float? While you could rig up a float rig on a tenkara rod, I think they're far better suited to tight line/euro/contact nymphing. The long light rod is very sensitive and fish small nymphs like perdigons, pheasant tails, walt's worms and hare's ears very well. The long rod helps reach those hard to reach spots. Not as well as a dedicated trad setup, but very good for such a simple and light setup. While you can run multiple nymphs, don't try it until you've mastered one. Definitely try out that level line before you write tenkara off completely. It made a huge difference for me. Once you catch your first fish on a fly, you'll be hooked. Tenkara was my gateway drug to trad fly fishing. And learning trad casting greatly helped my tenkara cast. Keep at it anon.
>>2842361>Yeah, that's total BS. I've been tenkara fishing for several years and caught lots of fish with it. I can look at where I want the fly to go and put it right there. All on 4x. >>2842414> Perhaps, you have yet to put your tenkara rod to the test against big fish, which is why 4X hasn't broken your rod yetIf you can't land a 16-18in trout on a 4x tippet on your tenkara rod, it's not worth whatever you paid for it or a skills issue. >>2842359I am a big fan of the Frabill Teardrop Floating Trout Net. There are different sizes.
>>2842423> I sell fishing equipment for a livingGot it, that's why you shill for stuff you don't need. And tow the company line.
>>2842426Tenkara rods are not even sold in the store I work at. I don't get commission. You're a fucking retard. I recommend what I recommend because I've had positive experiences and because I believe in it.
>>2842429And your experience is that 4x will break your tenkara rod and scare off fish?
Someone posted a really nice crappie in the last thread & i meant to reply. This is the biggest I’ve caught, 2 weeks ago, 10.5 in. Everything local is small & very light in color — I would love to catch something like that anon
>>2842430I have not been in a position where I can afford to test rods to find their breaking point. Instead, I defer to people more expert than myself. On the topic of line diameter, I have absolutely found smaller diameter cast better (conventional rods), fool more fish, and create less drag. I value direct experience above all else, which is not to say that other routes of information are not to be valued. My coworkers, whom I respect, say the same thing and so do the experts. If you think that I'm wrong and that you are better off fishing 50 lb metal leaders for your nymph rig, go ahead.
>>284243110.5 is a very good crappie in many bodies of water. I'm lucky that my main lakes are all good crappie lakes. Do you mostly use cranks, jigs, or bait?My best crappies have all been on live minnows, but the one from last thread was on a pink and chrome Rapala UL Shad.
>>2842435>4x >50lb metal leaders>retard level straw man>appeals to authority>argues in platitudes and logical fallacies
>>2842431What a monsterHere is my catch, probably thought the rapala was its mommy

if you where to recommend one reliable spin reel for a 30lb line, preferably with the drag system on the back, which would it be?i'm going to an isolated lake with huge pikes and my usual 5lb line isn't gonna cut it, i suppose i could use such a line for carp too
>>2842440Not a straw man. I'm simply saying I don't care what anyone else does so long as it doesn't harm me or the fish.>>2842494Funny how Company A has 6X and 2X for the same price. In fact, all tippets in the same series, regardless of diameter, are the same price. This is the same for every company. So tell me, how does an expert advocating for 6X over 4X lead to you thinking he is a shill?
Is it bad that I sprayed my reel/line spool directly with a water hose on my rods after saltwater fishing? It was my first time saltwater-anything with fishing and I was told I should rinse off everything on the kayak and my rods with freshwater as soon as I got home. Including lures, line guards, etc.Did I fuck up anything with the gear/mechanics of the reel by spraying it with a nose like that instead of being more careful with it? Is it still too late to maybe undo/lessen any fuck up with like WD-40 or anything?
>>2842518literally dropped my $80 lews combo in a (freshwater) lake once by accident and fished it out without ever doing like a real clean after, still werks 7 months later and most things you buy should already be "saltwater" rated so they don't rust with any water contactyes, you should rinse off after saltwater so the salt doesn't dry but hosing it down and letting it dry is actually correct so you're good
>>2841992In awe at the size of that lad
>>2842518it's probably fine but you should rinse with a more gentle pressure like shower mode instead of a hard spray. either way, if you're gonna saltwater fish you need to learn how to disassemble reels and maintain/relube them. it's much easier than it seems. most of the time you don't have to even fully break them down as often as just a simple cleaning.. hell, even for freshwater fishing, the difference between a reel that lasts and feels smooth for years vs one that feels like shit after a year or two is down to maintenance and not abusing it improperly.
>>2842509He implied that my using 4x instead of 5x I might as well be using 50lb steel wire. That is indeed a straw man. He also implied that my using 4x instead of 5x was going to break my rod because he read an article. That is 100% untrue. I said, use 5x if you want. Just don't tell me using 4x will break my rod. So he brought up his work to imply he had by that virtue expertise in the subject. And that I better read an article written by an expert or else I'm fishing tenkara wrong. All opinions, but stated as facts, written in stone. Well, I have my own experience and it says he's incorrect.
>>2842509>So tell me, how does an expert advocating for 6X over 4X lead to you thinking he is a shill? The con isn't in getting someone to buy 4x, 5x, 6x or 7x. It's in making them believe they NEED all 4.
>>2842583All the guy said is to go lighter than 4x. He didn't day you need all 4
>>2842602Thank you. And this guy >>2842567 doesn't realize who he is replying to. When I get someone started in tenkara, I tell them that they need 5X tippet, medium tippet rings, and some kind of pliers and cutting option (could be nail clippers). I strongly recommend getting the Frabill Teardrop Floating Trout Net because it is way better and way cheaper than any net made by Simms, Orvis, Fishpond, etc. and getting a magnetic net retractor. While a net isn't necessary, you wouldn't want morons fucking up your fish, would you? I recommend 6 inch NiteIze Gear Ties as a line holder because they work great, better than the ones made for tenkara. Obviously, I also recommend flies. To buy the tenkara rod and level line, customers have to go online. From my store, that person only needs to walk out paying $14. The net, retractor, and gear ties total to $55 iirc.
Well, I guess I'll leave this thread to the "expert" even though he left the other anon frustrated and unable to cast. I'm out. Good luck, you'll need it!
Tiny dentex dentex showed up.
>>2842614I bought all my stuff before talking to anybody about it. The poor casting is all me lolI got some practice in yesterday and was having better luck before a low flying tree stole my fly and wouldnt give it back
I’m putting a daiwa regal 3000 on my ugly stik gx2 and there’s nothing (You) can do to stop meIn other news I realized I’ve been using 20 pound line this whole time thinking it was 10 pound and I couldn’t understand why it would bird nest so damn much
Anyone here ever tried going for pike with one of these rat shaped topwater flies?I've seen pikes catching swallows in my area so i figured it would work
>>2842680A Regal on an Ugly Stik is not a problem. The problems with an Ugly Stik are that it isn't sensitive, doesn't cast well, and is now expensive. Anyone wanting to get a relatively cheap rod should get a Lightning Rod; they're great. You're not birdnesting due to light line. It's because of bad technique. Lighter line is better for casting because it is limper and has a smaller diameter.
hey what do you guys think about spoon lures? i started fishing a year ago, and decided to get into lures this month after being bait only. i started with spinners and now i want to learn about spoons.
I wanna fish, MD area near potomac. What is the first thing I should do? No experience.
>>2842694That’s my point, the excessively heavy line was causing the birds nest
Friendly reminder that fish dont care about your line with the obligitory repost of the 25 inch trout i caught with 25lb mono >>2842323Basically- its fly fishing with a cane pole for weebs. There are times and places it can be advantageous (mostly if you vslue portability over anything else and your fishing kit cant weigh more than 3oz total) but in almost every other situation a european fly rod is going to perform better on the water. >>2842338Goldeneye, Relative of the mooneye?>>2842348I cant disagree fully but there have absolutely been innovations in fly fishing capabilities, just no paradigm shifts like new reel styles- not since large arbor reels anyways. >>2842359Thats rough im sorry anon >>2842680Send it m8 post fish too we'd love to see em>>2842690Cant say i have but a lot of gamefish will take mouse and rat patterns, esox included. Just bought another Echo Lift Kit for myself and one for a friend. The fly line on there is actually good. I'm very impressed.
>>2842773Theres a reason i shill it so hard
>>2842775I already owned one and like it a lot. This fly line is much better than the one my shop put on the combo for me, and the new leader is better than the old one. My $1,000 Sage is better, but it's not a lot better. If Echo got Sage handles, it would pretty much be game over. Unfortunately, it sounds like Echo is hurting, according to my boss at least. He is alarmed by the huge price increase.
>>2841879Does anyone else fucking hate charters captains? I don’t mind it so much for saltwater (striper aside) but the fresh water ones in the northeast are so fucking annoying.Guess it’s my fault for joining some Fb groups to get local knowledge etc, but all it is is just charter captains posting pics every fucking day with the fish they rape through “catch and release” mishandled by the absolute cuckolds that pay 500 dollars for a few hours to have someone do 90% of the leg work to help rape the fish. Charter captains are scum of the earth imo

Anyone here try folding kayaks for fishing in lakes that don't have publicly accessible launches or public beaches?Mainly wondering about long term durability since i have a normal one too for actually doing distance
If I have 10, 15, 30, and 65 lb braid, and appropriate mono and fluoro for leaders (8, 12, 15, 30, 100), that should serve basically every need, right?
>>2842861I know a guy who bought one and liked it. I only talked to him in his first months of ownership. This is also the kind of guy who likes Pescador fly rods. YMMV. I don't think a folding kayak would be great if you're trying to sneak on a private lake. They are heavy.
>>2842861why not just get a lightweight 10ft kayak for that?
>>2842867It is only like 24lbs and has an ok carry strap. Shouldnt be an issue>>2842868Bulky if you have to go through woods with no trail and i have a normal hardshell kayak. And convenient because no roof rack neededWhat do they weigh?
>>2842726>I cant disagree fully but there have absolutely been innovations in fly fishing capabilities, just no paradigm shifts like new reel styles- not since large arbor reels anyways.to this day i'm still surprised reel with multiplier gears arn't the default for fly reels, or that there isn't more cheap reels available with a graphite or composite body or something like that, echo does that but they're kind of an exceptioni mean for about 65 dollars you can get a spin reel today that will outlive your children granted that you take proper care of it and it will outperform most older reels of it's type, and there are much cheaper options available that still do the job just fine if you compromise on quality
>>2842904Yeah it would be really cool if they could give us a gear ratio and make the handle Independent of the spool so you werent bashing your knuckles if a fish runs
>>2842905At that point you’re basically talking about the ice fishing inline design, just with fly reel capacity. The other change would be to make it somewhat like a bait runner so you don’t have to pull the full drag to get more line off the reel.
>>2842909Have a permanent clicker thats basically a click and pawl drag so you dont run everything in to a backlash and a free spool to click off the disc drag yeah
>>2842905basically a fly reel with one of these big handle there are on carp spin reels, would be the dream with a 3:1 gear ratio
Chilling at the boat ramp. Just paddled for a couple hours. I made about 5 casts. It was fun to just paddle, although my arms hurt by the end, hence this break before heaving this yak on top of my car.
Why can't I catch any of these stocked rainbow trout? Four hours at two lakes and all I caught is this stupid ugly bass
>>2842979The best baits in my local pond stocked with browns are salmon roe on a carolina rig or minnows on a float set up. I imagine stocked rainbows will act similarly. I think the roe would especially filter out the bass.
>>2842726So no shit there I was on the lake throwing a grub and a beetle spin when I snagged it on a rock. I managed to get it back and the next throw I snagged it on a rock again, except this time it was a fish and a fucking big one too (freshwater big).Reeled that bitch in with total shock at the size of that lad’s mouth since this animal was massive compared to the panfish I’ve been getting. I’ll be damned if that bastard didn’t snap the line right as he started to come out of the water. I nearly fell back, my sunglasses flew off behind me, and my animal instinct took over and I smacked that fish with my pole as it shot away. Little doubt in my mind I snagged a cat of some sort and that bitch was FAT. Unbelievable stuff to a novice like me. I fought this bass a few casts later.Stupid fish
Size 16 poison bomb midge. Very easy tie. Basically a zebra midge without the tapered body and an ice dubbing collar added. I saw it on Charlie's favorite flies for October video. It doesn't look like he brushes out the dubbing on his. I brushed mine out a bit.

im from the south and i feel like the fish vanished as soon as it got under 50 f in maine...
Didn't catch a single thing today, not even a bite, but a lone salmon decided to spend the first few hours of the morning trying to get up this little drain I was fishing by. If you pet a fish while it's swimming by can you count that as catching?

Anyone use Dark Age Lures to buy European market Rapalas before? I used to eBay things like Fat Jacks, but shipping has gone bananas for this crap since DHL implemented their new B2C rules for European shippers selling to America.

I'm the guy who works in a sporting goods store. For fun, I harass people about fly fishing, like a used car salesman or a Jehovah's Witness. Pretty much no one is interested, but in the past week, I sold a Lift Kit to a coworker, and another coworker said she enjoyed watching a tenkara video the night before and now she's strongly considering buying one.
>>2843143It's always easy to find a thread even without subject line if you are looking for it, but the main reason you want a proper subject line is for searchability in the archive.Sure we have the reply chain, but that's a real pain to crawl through.

How do I cope with losing the big one that got awayUsed a big chunk of fresh chopped mullet and got a huge bite and hooked on my heavy rod and real pulled so hard must have been the biggest fish I would have ever caught and then my swivel knot gave outI legit fell to my knees and felt like crying

Had a fun time up at my little creek. Cause a couple 9-10in rainbows and matched my best for this creek with another 13in rainbow.I caught this first guy twice! I got him to the net the first time, but accidentally bumped him right in the jaw with the edge of the net and knocked the fly out of its mouth. I threw the exact same perdigon to him and he gave me a second chance! Got him in the net the second time.
>>2843734I caught this second one a couple minutes later. Same perdigon, same hole. If I hadn't watched the other one take off down stream, I'd have guessed it was the same fish coming back for thirds! Lol
>>2843735I caught this guy about 100-200 yards upstream of the first two in a nice big pool. My brother in law also pulled a couple nice rainbows out of the same hole. An 11in on a perdigon and a 8in on a hare's ear. This was his first time nymphing, I think he's hooked.
>>2843736Saw this big stonefly crawling on the shore. Got it to crawl up my hand to get a picture. But he wasn't in the mood to stand still for anything. I suppose I wouldn't be either if someone my size to it was getting in my way..
>>2843051I highly doubt it was a stud bass and while there are certainly carp in those waters the mouth was far too large to be a carp. I also learned the problem was how tight I had the drag. Caught a rock bass, some bluegill, and a turtle today
>>2843327>>2843410Are these better than inflatable ones?
Just moved out to bumfuck nowhere so I could get away from traffic, cluttered suburbs, and just busy areas in general. Big yard. Nothing but rural property around me. No light pollution, never sern the stars like this before... and turns out that this tiny backwoods two lane road is popular for some reason. Its got nonstop vehicles passing by all day. Eevn at 3am. People must have to cut through this way to get somewhere importand since im not near a highway. Its fucking wild. Time to upgrade windows i guess. At least im near a river and some small lakes
>>2843770If you live on asphalt, you have no right to complain. In my world, asphalt means major road.
>>2843758I feel very secure in it vs a low quality inflatable, but I've never tried a decent one to properly compare it with. It definitely isn't competing with the ultra light packrafts for hikability and portability.I'll get one of those next spring for backpacking and might post about it then.
>>2843758One huge pro to it vs any of the nylon fabric sided inflatables is that you can towel dry it right away, the nylon ones take a while to dry out, the pvc ones are heavy but you can also towel them down. They look much more stout than the nylon fabric ones too
How do you catch fall bass? Nothing is biting.
>>2843816Water temps? They’re still like 70 here and working structure in shallow water is the most productive thing to do, but I was up north last weekend where the water is more like 60 degrees and my mom caught a 6 lb largemouth in the same deep hole we were grocery shopping some crappies for dinner out of.Hell of a thrill on a light rating crappie rod with a size 750 spinning reel. No, KVD, I’m not posting a picture of my 64 year old mother with a nice largemouth for your fishing babes collection.
do you guys have recommendations for travel rods?i value affordability and resilience, i don't need a rod that can feel subtle bites, i mostly fish for pikesi have an old shitty geologic telescopic one that i could replace, it's surprising it lasted this long already
>>2843839daiwa three piece
>>2843841their telescopic ones are bad? i see they have some
>>2843839I strongly recommend the St. Croix Premier 4 piece rod. I have caught large pike while small mouth fishing on the Medium weight 6’6” (including a 50 inch musky), but I would recommend the Medium Heavy if you’re a dedicated pike fisherman throwing heavy baits.
>>2843842NTA... Telescopic fishing rods are often not great. I'm sure there are good ones out there. But as a general rule, I personally avoid them.
>>2843842they are probably good but i think telescopics are generally worse quality overall compared to 3 to 5 piecesill bring my daiwa (though im sure any other reputable brand works good too) as my only everything pole to other states when i visit because im sick of fomoing in states better than the one im in (CO)i do have a telescopic but i would not use it as a serious pole (its an eagle claw lmao) and I keep it in the car for when im really feeling like casting into an errant body of water
Do multi piece rods feel ok? Especially for lighter power rodsThe only ones i use are one piece, but they are higher quality than the 2 multis i have
>>2843858yeah i know it doesn't perform as well, i'm just looking for reliability above the restsomething you can throw in a bag and not break when landing a decently big fish
>>2843860I've never understood one piece rods. They're stronger but most of the time it doesn't matter. My 4 piece fly rods feel fine in the sensitivity department. Plus they're convenient.
>>2843875>I've never understood one piece rodsMaybe it's just a head thing. I've always considered them the standard and a multipiece as a compromise for portability. The only multipieces i have are pretty inexpensive and old (and only for travel) which has certainly reinforced my previous biases.Still wary of trying a better travel rod because if i didn't like it then i wouldn't know if it was the rod model or the multipiece aspect of it
Skid, what is your fuzzle bugger tied with, ice dub? Some fish, like blue gill in spring, have a purple hue to them. When I was holding up a white fuzzle bugger to the light, I got a bunch of purple. Maybe, I could make a shad pattern by incorporating some ice dub with some white hair.
My monthly Smitty's fly box arrived today! Two new patterns. This month's beginner pattern is called an Ice Minnow. Materials in the box include: 20 size 10 streamer hooks, 6/0 Uni thread in red, one pack each of olive and white marabou, one package each of olive and pearl ice dubbing and one pack each of copper and silver brass cone heads. Not included, is lead wire. They say they don't include it because some states prohibit it. Why they don't send lead free wire instead probably comes down to their bottom line. But I have lead wire, so no big deal.
>>2843919The pattern is very simple. 5 wraps of .25 lead wire, tie in a marabou tail, one tight dubbing noodle to build the profile and a second that gets brushed out at the end. These will go great with my wooly bugger collection.
>>2843920The intermediate pattern is called Bailey's Tickler. Materials included: 20 size 12 jig hooks, 6/0 Uni thread in brown and olive, 4mm copper slotted tungsten beads, a small package of cdc feathers, 3 very long cdl feathers, #14 pearl flash Uni, brown and olive D-rib material and a package of olive brown ice dubbing.
>>2843922This was a fun little pattern and will be a nice addition to my euro nymph collection. The provided coq de leon feathers are nice and long. I barely got 1/8th of the way through one tying these 6 and I even messed up twice tying them in and had to go back for another section. This is my first time using the rubber ribbing material. It's very easy to work with. It was also my first time using cdc feathers. They were easy to work with in this application. I'll probably have a chance to try these out tomorrow.
>>2843895Yeah, ice dub in a thoroughly brushed-out dubbing loop. Some ice dub is more purple and some is more green in the light, if you can try to look at it in the shop before you buy.>>2843920Thats basically my fuzzle bugger, just ditch the marabou and use ice dub for the tail and use a well brushed dubbing loop for the body instead of a noodle- it kills in both fresh and salt water.>pic relatedGot this snook fishing a weightless one under a green light>>2843923Those look good, good luck anon.>>2843860I get plenty of sensitivity out of my multi piece rods
>>2843886After using 4piece rods I'm sold on the idea of it not really mattering. I have a one piece for my medium power bait caster but it doesn't feel any better than my two piece. None of my rods are particularly expensive and are all chinese made bullshit but they work just fine. Maybe if I were salt water fishing for large fish I'd consider it. For freshwater I don't think it matters at all, even for catfishing or pikefishing. That's just my opinion but in terms of "are multipiece rods fine" I think they're equal to a one piece outside the very fringe durability usage that you probably will never run into. You'll definitely break your tip before you snap a rod where the ferrules are. One piece might be more sensitive but I've haven't noticed. I think modern materials just make most rods so nice. Maybe 30 years ago one pieces were better but now even cheaper rods are using what would've been space age materials back in the day.
>>2843860Good 4 piece rods feel fine. Bad ones are terrible. Even cheap 2 piece and 1 piece rods generally feel decent. All my boat rods are 1 piece, but I’m fishing from a canoe as often as my boat and Inuse a 4 piece rod basically any time I’m fishing and not hauling my Crestliner along because I don’t have a roof rack any more and I don’t want to deal with a 7 foot rod I can’t break down in my car.
Shop guy here. I'm not an early riser. I was looking at fly tying stuff and waders last night and am only now getting ready to head out. I've been wanting new wading gear for a year now. My boots were destroyed months ago.Anyway, my store has a swap meet twice a year. It's a much loved event. I put my waders in at $200 (a bit less than half MSRP), my 84-B 8 WT at $280, fly line at $35, and a sling pack at $105. These were some good deals. I was walking back to change the price on my sling, and I saw a guy who I thought was this customer who buys fly fishing stuff, so I tell him "Wanna buy a fly rod?" This was the wrong guy. The race wasn't even the same, but this stranger looks up and says yes. We walk over to my rod, and he says he'll buy it after looking at it for a minute. I then sell him some stuff to go with it and give him a good deal on line. This was like walking up to a woman, asking her to give you a blowjob and her getting on her knees right away. The next day, I'm working by myself and got inundated with phone calls and customers. This guy was on hold for a bit, which meant he could have hung up, but when I pick up, he wants to know about waders. I start telling him what we sell, and he then specifies chest waders in an XL. That's what I'm selling in the swap! I misquoted the price over the phone, but he buys them. My boss was not very happy that I was selling my stuff, but the thing is that these sales fell into my lap. Plus, we don't have XL waders at the moment.Where that leaves me is without waders this morning. I'm going trout fishing today and tomorrow. Water temps and air temps are in the 50's, but I think I can manage. I did buy another pair of waders from [Shit company I'm partnered with], but they fit terribly, and the zipper is shit. Instead, I'm buying Patagonia at full price.
>>2843986as long as it isn't too cold i just stick my bare feet in the watersometimes i walk on rocks and it hurt sometimes i don't
I buy low speed reels to combat my adhd and still retrieve too quickly.
>Try all the places that would make sense for bass to be right now>Find no bass>Go to the boat ramp, try under the docks>No bass>Look into the shallowest part of the boat ramp, in the bright sun, with no cover at all>See a 4-5lb bass just lurkingMaybe I'm bad at fishing actually, I think that's it.
>>2843996This time of the year with low overnight temps and warm days make them hesitant. You have to have some luck and try to get reaction bites since they might not be feeding as much
>>2843932>Those look good, good luck anon.I had a chance to try out >>2843923 and >>2843010 today. The size 12 dwarfs the size 16s I've been tight line nymphing with. It had a lot more lob to it with all of the additional weight. It did a great job getting down fast though. Both did a great job getting down there. Unfortunately I didn't catch anything today. I was only able to get out for about an hour pretty close to sunset. I did get one bite on the tickler, but I pulled it out of it's mouth. Nothing after that but trees....several trees, several times.. But I managed to not lose a fly today, so that's a win. I also managed to hook myself! Got the tickler stuck in a tree above me, tangled up in the leaves, so it was a tugging match, who gives out first, the leaves or my 5x flouro. It was the leaves, and my fly was sent right into my hand which was shielding my face. Thank goodness for super sharp barbless hooks! Aside from the impact and the fact that the fly didn't drop after it, I didn't even feel it stick me. And it was a good 1/8in into my knuckle. Slid right out without pain too! So all in all not too bad. It's looking like rain for the next several days, so it'll be a bit before I get back out to try them out again. I'm sure they'll catch fish, just not today.
Did some euro nymphing yesterday. It's much easier when you have a castable leader. I fished only for a little while, but those rainbow trout were absolutely retarded, so catching them was easy.
Going to go try for some redfish in the grass beds this evening after work.
Finally got the redfish that’s been taunting me under my dock every night. Very happyLet him go so we can hopefully fight again some other day
i went to my local pond i never went to before because it need it's own permitit was shit, it's supposed to be stocked up and there was just some old ass carp chilling in the sun and a bunch of small perch

do you guys use steel leaders for pike? i dunno if i'm unlucky or if it scare of the pikei did lose a bunch of lures to cuts but is it worth it if you land less fish?is it just to sell you some steel on topof the rest of is it actually worth it?
>>2844116A metal leader (steel isn't the only kind) or a heavy fluoro leader is necessary.
>>2844120it feel like a loose fish vs loose lure dilemmaand i mostly use jigheads with a soft lure on it so it isn't too costly
>>2844121I feel like dogshit when a fish swims off with a crank in his mouth. If they’re being spooky about the steel leader, I switch to 30 lb fluorocarbon.
>>2844107Shrimp on a circle hook and a popping cork Really wanna try eating one one day or find one that weighs 10+ pounds. Only my second one so far and the other one about the same size as in the pic
>>2844068Tied some more ticklers. I used some of my size 16 hooks and 2mm rainbow tungsten beads. Top 6 are 1x long regular gape, bottom six 1x gape up point. Middle is the size 12 from the kit for scale.
Yesterday, I was mostly euro nymphing. It's a fun and capable form of fishing, but the reel is heavy, which is aggravating my hand problem.I went to one reliable stream, but fishing sucked. Then, I went to a museum that I incidentally snuck into for free. I felt like I was going to have diarrhea all the time but never did. Eventually, I made my way to a brookie stream. I caught one but totally submerged my boots, which sucked. Wet wading didn't turn out to be so bad. I went to yet another creek, and I caught a brown and rainbow. I achieved the trifecta. And now, I head home.
>>284412830 lb fluoro is too light. It's not about keeping the fish on but about being bite resistant. Go with 80 lb fluoro.
>>2844205>Go with 80 lb fluoro.isn't it a bit overkill? wouldn't 50lb work just fine?i get the 30lb one might cut on a 48" pike but 80lb is fat
>>284420530 lb fluoro is enough for most purposes, I have never lost a lure to a pike with a 30 lb fluoro leader, though I have had to replace the leader after a single fish, so it’s not inconceivable that it could happen. The second biggest musky I’ve ever caught (~50 inches) was on 15 lb braided mainline and a 30 lbs fluoro leader, and I fought that fish for over 20 minutes. I’ve lost more lures on wire leaders due to swivel or snap failure.
>30 lb fluoro is enough for most purposesThat said, I was fishing for smallmouth when I caught that fish and my dedicated musky rod has a 12 foot long 100 lb mono shock leader. That leader would ruin the action of a small crank like that fish bit, the musky rod is for 3-12 oz lures that won’t care about 100 lb test line. It’s about picking a combination that works without excessive risk of lure/fish loss.

Ive seen guys lose muskies by the fish bitihg through 130lb flouro. Just use steel, 30lb tieable wire from rio is fantastic for smaller presentations. single strand can have kinking issues but is very thin, 43lb wire is like 8lb in diameter.Shitty swivels and shitty snaps are a problem, though. Invest in good snaps and swivels.
>>2844271steel isn't very discreet tho, it's fine for pike only but if you wanted a bit of zander on the side it isn't gonna bite
>>2844271isn't the diameter of the said fluo more important than the lb strength? i was led to believe thatdepending on the brand you can find 50lb fluo as thick as another's 80lb
Any advice on what to use for fishing in this weather that's getting colder?Great lakes region
>>2844302What are you looking for, clothing or bait advice? If the latter, what are you fishing for?
New rod and reel dayNever heard of the rod brand eurotackle but the it looks and feels nice. It says moderate fast and I'm glad it doesn't feel too whippy. 6.5ft 1 piece should be good for the 'yakClashes amazingly well with the daiwa fuego colors too lolNow i need to grab some line and go find dinner
>>2844376The latter. As for what I am going for I like to target walleye but I even start to have issues with Bass this time of year. Usually I use soft plastics during the spring and summer and have decent look. But it seems Everytime the weather gets cold it gets harder
>>2844401I can't say I've seen a rod with a power line warning on it before.
>>2844404My tenkara rod has a lightning disclaimer on it tooMust be because of the carbon fiber
>>2844402Try smaller baits and more subtle retrieves, even the bluegill slow down and become reluctant when temps start to drop.
>>2844404>>2844407I know Loomis has a warning. I think it's just because it's a tall pointy thing that you may very well fish in rain that could turn to lightning. Some guy's kid probably got electrocuted once, so now, there's a disclaimer and a Brandon Giddles Memorial Foundation.

Can i pull my spool off a spinning reel without taking the line off?It is bunching up at the top and i wanted to put a washer or 2 on the spool without re lining it
>>2844570Yes, you can remove the spool with taking the line off, but based on your asking this question, I would recommend that you don't add washers. Virtually no one uses them. To remove the spool, loosen the drag all the way and pull it off
>>2844570Open the bail and remove the spool.
I've been having pretty bad luck at a big fresh water lake in the southern USA. The only thing I'm catching bass on is a plastic worm usually on a texas rig. I've tried crank bait, gizzard shad, rizers and all the other expensive crap locals recommend. Live worms don't seem to get much action either. It is a heavily pressured lake and sometimes it's just fishing boats going around in circles over the same spot which is funny. So I think the fish have seen everything under the sun 20 times over. I'm thinking I need to get creative. I tried literal candy that looks like fish (Swedish Frish candy) but that didn't do anything and I got a few laughs. I haven't tried corn. I'm not sure what "creative" bait would actually be.
>>2844617crayfish might be a decent avenue to look up. most fish I clean have hella crackfish in their bellies. at least crayfish-adjacent or reminsicent of crayfish solely because in my experience they tend to be less used. people dont typically roll up with crustaceans (unless they do where you live)
Newfag here. Only started fishing this year. Fresh water streams mostly, some lakes. Catching mostly sunfish, pumpkinseeds and blue gill. Finally caught my first yellow perch though.Running an old Berkeley two piece 5'6" rod, old Shimano reel, 6 pound braided line. Caught this perch on a worm
>>2844638That’s a good idea. Thank you
how shit it's gonna feel to throw a 5g jighead on a 20g rod? i mean, it still work
>>2844686Congrats! Catching new species is especially fun for the beginner. Here's to hoping you won't become a single species snob.
>>2844740Thanks! I love catching anything, and fishing is one of the only things I can do that chills me out. I do want to catch fish for eating purposes, but I love hooking anything on the line!
>>2844617Lakes aren't as easy to fish as they might seem. Big wide open water means you first have to find fish, which means knowing how they move during the seasons. Fishing pressure just makes it even harder. One thing you can do when it comes to lures is downsize. Bass fishermen are usually throwing bigger shit so small lures often get good response from pressured fish. Spinnerbaits are good for covering water in search of fish. I like the smaller ones like the pond magic and such. Certain times of the year are also harder because fish are more dormant and less widespread. Winter is good for the sole reason that 99% of boats are put away and there is less fishing pressure.
>>2844686congrats bro. as someone whos brought out a few never-fish people this year its sick u out here just fuckin catchin shit and padding out the fisherman resume, some ppl I brought were having a hard time even with constant supervision and help from me. I predict a bass or pike for your next catch it seems like the natural progression. Shallow water fishing lil dinks is something that still gives me childlike excitement.perch are the shit theyre my actual favorite in all aspects including flavor. I find it just a pinch more palatable than walleye which is what most ppl tell me is thei fav fish is to eat. finding a squad of jumbos is what I live for.
>>2844756Thanks. You’re right. But I literally see the fish come look at the bait on forward sonar and not bite.
>>2844756Oh and you’re GPT

I'd like to know what your favorite woolly bugger that can be bought from a fly company is? Do you prefer crayfish types or leech types? Do you prefer impressionistic or realistic?
>>2844830>what your favorite woolly bugger that can be bought from a fly companyWhen I buy flies, I buy them from the bulk bins at a fly shop. No idea what company makes them bruv.>Do you prefer crayfish types or leech types?Depends on what I’m targeting. I keep several versions in my fly box.>Do you prefer impressionistic or realistic?Realistic catches my eye at the shop, impressionistic seems to catch fish just as well, however. I’m not great shakes at tying flies and would count most of what I tie as impressionistic, and they catch fish just fine.
say, i've always used full mono line, how are you supposed to use a braid line since it's visible underwater? with a 10yards mono leader or something like that? wouldn't a knot that hight be shit on the reel/rings?
>>2845011>Fish don't care about your line>30 feet of leader is absurd for almost any situation, 10 inches to 10 feet is much more typical>fg knot>>2844830I dont buy flies anymore so i couldnt weigh in on brands but i do know i strongly prefer impressionist presentations over realistic. I feel lore confident in a fly that kinda looks like 3 food items that a fish might eat than one that looks exactly like one food item the fish may or may not be feeding on.>>2844617Downsize, throw big crappie lures at them. >>2845014>fg knotnever used it, does it stand well going through the rod's guides or would the albright do better?
>>2845011I started using braid this year, it doesn't fucking matter. I've tied straight braid to a hook and still caught shit, the only reason I use a leader is so I can easily retrieve snags without leaving line in the water.
>>2845043It does great>>2845058Pretty much, and heavy mono/flouro is more abrasion resistant than braid. Rocks will fuck up any line but esoecialky braid.

New PB cat, 28.5” ~9.4lbs on 6.5’ rod, 6lbs mono, Carolina rig. Dispatched & gifted to the Hispanic bro who helped me net it. Took a lot out of me to harvest this hog, but the guy’s family of 8 was ecstatic to munch him. Handsome fish
>>2842439Hey anon same poster as above. I’m pretty much solely using a light bubble rig (akin to what you would use for a pistol Pete or dry fly to reel) & a 1/64-3/16 oz jig, e.g. Trout Magnet, Roadrunner, ice jigs, etc. I don’t know the method or name of the rig but I call it the Christmas rig because of the beads above & below the bubble.Pic related is sunny caught Xmas style
Caught this poor bastard twice on the same spinnerI felt horrible the second time move spots
>>2845412poor lad definitely wanted to end up in a pan, why didn't you let him? he's not too small
>>2845414I only had my rod and a single lure tied on. No knife or coolerDidnt expect to catch anything there and just wanted to take a few casts with a new rod and reel after work
>>2845419i would have kept it on the hook end go home with it, assuming your home is less that 2h away and you had nothing to do on the way
look at my 3kg boi
>>2845251nice one anon
>>28454813rd one, a common
Scored during a walk down the beach
no one told me palomar sucked to do on heavy mono lines, i guess it isn't the knot king after allended up doing a uni that goes twice in the eye
I'm about to go for my first time this week, do I need a special knife for this or can I get away with using one of the ones I already have?
>>2845558first time doing what?
>>2845559Fishing.
>>2845560and how are you planning to do that? jumping in the water and stab the fish with the said knife?i mean we're missing context on the purpose of the knife here
>>2845560the knife is for fishing? or cleaning? cuz ya that uses a fillet knife but if you understand the concept + are fine with a level of wastage u can use any knife. but if its for the fishing itself idk bro i dont need a knife. maybe toenail clippers to cut line instead of my teeth but rly wat knife activities r u on about
>>2845561>>2845562Forget I asked.
>>2845563just answer, maybe we can advise for better tools for the purposeif you planned on stabbing, a spear would have been better, spear fishing is a very legitimate methodfor cutting a small line or bleeding small fish, scissors do it well, for a heavier line, nail clippersdon't tell me you're having social anxiety on 4chan out of all places
>>2845558I don't typically use a knife while fishing. I do carry a buck bantam pocket knife while /out/ in general. So that is with me. But for fishing itself, it doesn't get used. Nippers to cut line and a pair of forceps to dislodge hooks that are deep in the mouth. For fileting fish, I use a Victorinox 6in curved boning knife. You could also just use a long, sharp, kitchen knife. If you want a purpose built knife for filleting fish, get a fillet knife. But they are not necessary, nor is filleting. I like cooking smaller panfish and trout whole, bone in. Just gut, scale(I use a spoon or the back of my knife) and remove the head. Dredge in flour seasoned with s&p and pan fry until golden brown and delicious.
>>2845563Ignore the trolls, there are helpful people in this thread too.
>>2845570banter to ask more more context is hardly trolling tho
Yeah, I eat bass.
>>2845582say, i've never tried these baitcast reels, i get the idea for big saltwater fish that they got a greater drag and multiplier gear, but for freshwater what do they do that you can't do with a spin reel?
Anyone here does pole fishing?
I got to fish after a long time not having the chance. It was so awesome. Only got bluegill and a turtle but it was still fishing.
>>2845592Same basic idea in fresh, with the benefit of no line twist, and no bail fuckery. This a tiny ultralight baitcaster sold for ice fishing, on a 5.5' ultralight rod with 6lb braid on it, and I jigged these bass out of 25' of water. This rig affords me no special benefit it's basically just for larping as a deep drop jigger so that 2lb bass put up a bit of a fight. I also just happen to like the feel of a baitcaster more.
A buddy told me cheap baitcasters are shit and not worth usingIs that true or are there decent budget models?
>>2845674Buddy's a retard. Even the 15$ temu specials have bearings, metal gears, carbon drags and magnetic brakes nowadays. Totally serviceable for the average angler.
>>2845688Good to know. I've only used them for drop fishing from a boat. Never casted one and wanted to try it out
>>2845604I do tenkara>>2845674Yes, they are shit. I bought one a few years ago. I'm so glad I managed to get rid of it. Just use a spinning reel if you don't want to spend a lot of money on a baitcaster.
>>2845592It's the apex of finesse fishing due to it's unique ability to fling line anywhere with easeMy buddy is a master angler and its the only way he gets off to fishing anymore
>>2845693The real trick is in the rod. Baitcasters shine on long, stiff carbon rods throwing heavier baits, the Japanese obsession with throwing light lures is pure autism. Don't buy a shitty department store fiberglass casting rod.
love this time of the year when crappie finally start moving into shallower water and I can catch them off my dock again, just a bobber a hook and some minnows is all you need.
I picked up fishing this summer, and I'm trying to get better at using a carolina rig with live bait. So far, I haven't caught shit with it. What am I doing wrong? I cast it out far, near cover if I can without getting snagged, and reel it in slowly while letting it rest every few feet. I'll get the occasional nibble, but when I go to set the hook, I end up just yanking the worm away with no fish. Any tips on how to use this rig?
Caught my first fish in Florida, a good sized snook! I moved about 3 months ago from the PNW and its been tough learning what fish like here. Had no success with worms, lures, or soft plastics, so I finally tried live shiners today and got this guy. Also hooked a gar but it got off in the weeds.
>>2845742What are you fishing for? If you are fishing for trout, then you need to inflate the worm. A plastic glue bottle or dulled syringe should work. Trout are sight feeders and don't sniff around the muddy bottom for food like a catfish or carp, so suspending the worm by inflating it makes it more visible. In my opinion, I don't think the carolina rig should be actively fished. I think you should leave it out for maybe 10 minutes at a time. Then, you can give it a slow retrieve with some action if you want.
>>2845746nice looking snook!my parents live in Florida, we catch most of our fish using live shrimp on a hook, just a shrimp and a sinker is all we need, have caught tons of different types of fish
>>2845726>Don't buy a shitty department store fiberglass casting rod. This is true. But fiberglass rods are great for crankbaits. Of course, this will be a St. Croix rod and not an Ugly Stik.
Anyone have any tips for great lakes salmon/steelhead/trout fishing in the tributaries this time of the year?I see a lot of recommendations to run a fairly long leader from the mainline and then a lighter bumper after that. Is it really necessary? Or will i be ok with a 4 or so ft floro leader attached to the mainline by a swivel? This will be my first time going up there and targeting salmonI have eggs and egg sack netting along with a variety of other lures
>>2845674Yes and no. Cheap baitcasters work fine but they won't feel the best or cast as well. $100 will get you into metal frame models that feel and perform better. Best way is to catch a good sale on one that goes for $100+. Shimano slx, daiwa ca80, daiwa fuego, 13 fishing modus c2, 13 fishing origin c, etc. Plenty of those can regularly be found for under $70
>>2845775Youll be fine ive caught lake erie steelhead using 30lb high vis braid and a 4 foot leader of 25lb mono and usually whrn im swinging flies i have a 4 foot 14lb mono leader. Dont fish less than 10lb, anyone who says you have to use a 27 foot leader of 3lb flourocarbon is a fudd. I think i might try to catch one on a steel leader this year just to prove they really dont give a shit.
>>2845800Nta- The boomers selling those Abu Cardinal 3s for 400$ on Facebook all swear up and down that they're catching 20lb trout on 4lb monofilament all winter and I'm just dying to see one actually on the river so I can slash the tires on their Buicks. People who idolize trout as some kind of sneaky fucking genius fish are the biggest retards I swear.
>>2845814If theyre catching 20lb trout on 4lb what theyre doing is killing those fish. Overplaying big fish on light tackle is a great way to sky rocket mortality rates. Ive seen plenty of otherwise healthy looking fish floating under popular bobber holes and i know some odiot with 2lb flouro spent an hour and a half trying to reel it in, caught it, released it, 'she swam away strong' then died an hour later of exhaustion and stress. If there was damage to the gills there would have been clotted blood in there and fatal disease in fish is seldom subtle, its easy to tell when a fish died of exhaustion. And it cant even be harvested because who knows when it died, its not safe tablefare and died for nothing.
>>2845818sometimes it feel like fishing for sport is almost as dumb as hunting for sport, well at least you can release a fish unlike hunting but stilli can't conceive fishing without eating a part of what you're catching
