>>4288210Set my camera to f22 and take a picture if 35mm. Fiddle with the movements on my 4x5 camera until I get good focus, fiddle with my lights until I'm happy, measure bellows for bellows extension compensation, spot meter for exposure, then take the picture. >>4289219You know you can use a macro lens for general purpose photography, right? Most mounts have a 50-ish 1:1 macro lens and some zoom that can do 1:3 - 1:4.
>>4288210Do you have a tripod? If not, go get a tripod. For macro of live subjects (insects really) I can't say it will help as much, that's coming down to aperture, flash and diffuser, etc. The attached photo for example, I should've actually manually focused that image and tried to get the whole caterpillar body in focus rather than just its head segments. But for something static like fungi or plants, you should get a tripod in play, and preferably trigger your camera via the bluetooth app and then just work settings until you get a smooth stack. That also means you can do something like a 150 image stack which would let you get every single piece of your image in focus.>>4289219Long macro lenses are generally pretty solid portrait lenses. >>4295782If you can stretch your budget another $100 or do you could buy a cheap old DSLR with kit lens, a reversal adapter ($12 but requires a lens with manual aperture control) or a raynox 250 ($70) and a $5 collapsible diffuser to spread out your camera's built in flash. That'd be a fairly capable kit. Unfortunately the used market sucks right now and old shitty cameras alone are a minimum $100 thanks to snappiness. does this look too bright / poorly diffused? testing out macro diffusers for the first time taken with pop up flash and diffuser on left >>4291421>>4295503avoid this it broke instantly when i got it
>>4297164versus with dedicated flash and diffuser (i think flash actually missed the mantis by a bit)still playing around with flash strengthjust trying to determine if the pop up flash is good enough or i NEED the big one
>>4297164>>4297165Not too bright at all. The second one has better diffusion, the first looks like it's made of plastic in comparison, it's just way too dark.
is autoISO fine for macro?im a birdfag i never learned how to ISO because im always on autoISO for birds
>>4297228Auto ISO is fine for almost everything
>>4297228If you're lighting with flash exclusively there's no reason to keep your ISO above base level or a little higher, except battery life.
>>4297169bought another diffuser, notice any difference between these pics other than brightness?i think i just need to reduce power of pop up by a bit and they are basically the same
>>4298002That's a more difficult subject to notice any difference on because the spines are so matte. I can see it a little bit on the green parts, again the non-diffused one looks more like a fake plastic plant than the diffused one, but there's so little of it that is in focus it doesn't grab any attention.
>>4298062both images were using the same diffuser, sorry for the confusion. only difference is pop up flash vs speedlight.any suggestions for a good test subject? id use a dead bug but i can't find any.was thinking coins but they are probably too reflective.
>>4298066Well that is interesting, my guess would be because the speedlight is presumably firing at a higher brightness it's overpowering the diffuser and creating a hot spot. Or maybe it's set to a more focussed zoom (if it's adjustable) where as a pop-up flash has a fixed zoom that is generally wide enough to cover 28mm equiv.
>>4298067i have the flash zoom set to 10mm which is the widest it can go(i read it was best to have it wide as possible for macro)the speedlight definitely seems brighter and has a much wider blast, i just had both set to auto TTL, still need to play around and adjust strengthto me the difference is not worth using the speedlight, but this was shot at minimum focus distance, so i will have to see how good the pop up flash is at further away subjects
>>4298070Yeah in terms of the output image the difference isn't going to be great, in fact if you can get the diffuser lit up equally with both then it should be close to identical. One difference worth considering is battery life, blasting away the pop-up flash at full power is obviously going to significantly reduce the amount of shots you can get where as the speedlight has no effect on the camera's battery and has its own power source. Recycle times may also be better on the speedlight, as well as flash duration if you end up shooting something that moves (unlikely for macro though).
>>4298084in regards to battery life, carrying a few extra batteries is still MUCH smaller and lighter than my speedlight recycle time would definitely be slower with pop up but i've never felt it was too slowthanks for the help
found a new test subject, probably the most scared i've been taking a photocouldn't get close enough for 1:1 as it would run/jump awayhuntsman spider slightly smaller than my handi noticed TTL auto flash would overexpose against black backgrounds, should i be using centre metering?
Is there such a thing as a good macro photograph when compared to all other forms of photography?

Anyone ever try macro photography with a 4x5 camera? It's the sort of turbo autism type of photography I love. I'm not very good at it, but I have a lot of fun trying, and I'm excited to make large prints of the better ones.
Here's a "studio" shot I took. It's fun to set up all the lights and stuff. Not very good image...If you are interested in more controlled macro type photography I would recommend looking into getting fiber optic microscope lights. They are powerful, and you can easily adjust/add modifiers to them.
>>4302188I haven't; I imagine it produces fantastic results but you'd need a lot of magnification to match even 35mm 1:1. How practical is this? Do you use bellows or something else?
>>4303521This was the setup for >>4302189That is an uncropped scan, and maybe around a 1:1ish. A 1:1 magnification is 2 x focal length in bellows draw, so not always too bad.It depends on what you consider practical... I think that using standard movements provides an excellent way to avoid using focus stacking, but often times it ends up being a sort of compromise when choosing what is and isn't in focus. For flatter subjects it is really great. With enough bellows and a wide angle lens you can easily get to extreme magnifications. A 65mm lens with 500mm of bellows will get you over 6x magnification, but you would need to add 6 stops of exposure compensation...[EXIF data available. >>4303765looks like a common toad, location?
>>4303782The UK so that seems likely. I was reading about them and they can excrete a toxin, I always wondered if that's what the red stuff was on him as I didn't see any cuts, but it turns out that stuff is white.
I hope you'll forgive some reposts, it feels like bug hunting season is still so far away.

is there any alternative for helicon hocus? >look up free alternative>someone recommends picolay >try it out, produces garbled mess>try to optimize the settings, barely any improvement>download helicon focus and a crack>literally perfect result on the first tryI'm honestly impressed enough that I'm kinda willing to pay for it.
>>4305309why dont you just keep using the cracked version like every other person
4 spined jewel spider flash a bit too bright in reflections but happy to see this uncommon sider
