Sigma 150-500mm, certainly one of my most satisfying purchases. It's big and it's heavy and slow at the long end but for me a wouldn't want to be stuck with a long prime, it was cheap, and with IS and the noise performance of modern full frame I can do without the extra speed. I've got an A7R III now so looking forward to the good weather and getting back out with it.

I took this one really to see what kind of subject separation I could achieve at very long distances; there's always a challenge finding the middle ground between depth of field and aberration control.
Wide open there's a little loss of sharpness which reduces the pop from the in-focus texture.
Overall totally stoked with the IQ from this lense though, I'd never really been interested in carrying around mega zooms just for the perspective control, as they give up too much IQ, and shooting on film from a tripod, I'm never really sure if the IS systems are working with me or against me.
With this lense I'll be able to make bulb exposures and know that at least the lense elements are centred.
And really flawless distortion, sharpness and CA.
MFD sucks, but I can use tubes for smaller objects.

And I have this 36" (914mm) f/6.3 that I'm itching to try out, just need to engineer a tripod mount for it that will support its heft (somewhere around 8-9kg mostly concentrated at the front). No idea how well the focussing is going to work, previous owner bodged a helicoid from some random lens onto it but I don't think it'll have enough travel.

I hear you, it's just that the only tele zoom lense that would work on a film body AND not compromise the IQ is the 100-400L ii, and they continue to be very expensive, and I would still be in an autistic headspace over what the IS was doing whenever I'd use it. They also do excellent macro, which the 400L certainly doesn't.
Pic related re:IQ, it's the tamron 150-600 G1, on an F100. Shot at f11 in ideal conditions, but the outer part of the frame just isn't very good, and it's just too fucking heavy to carry around if you're not going to be blown away by the results.

Of course it does, because the resolution allows for cropping well past 190mm equivalent. Take a 35mm sized crop and there's your 720mm. It has the exact same reach as a 720mm lens on a 35mm camera would have, because the reach depends on the film resolving power and the focal length. Barring the lens being soft, the image should be the same.

This is a crop of a 4x5 image that I took using a 720mm lens. It counts.

>>4295761
Done. I think it looks pretty cool too!

Cropping It is the exact same thing as taking it on 35mm film. "35mm equivalent" is merely a point of reference that we use because it is the standard photography film size.

It will be the same as if I took the image on 35mm film! The grain size doesn't change between formats, or so I'm told.

Dare I say you would need finer grained film if you wanted better crop potential?

I did post it. It's just a crop of the jpg. Maybe I will do my next crop from the original tiff next time.

It makes sense why it was so important for you to barge your way into this thread too, this is really incredible work that needs to be shared in as many threads as possible.
You know, I admire you so much for managing to capture an image on such a big camera, I would never be able to do that because I'm such a teeny widdle baby.
Can you tell us all how much you spent on it, and how much better your real final actual version of this photo is going to be in the very near future when you go back to make a paper print?

I had a dream you sold your dog for 10k, immediately posted about buying an entry level hasselblad to “make /p/ seethe”, no one was trolled, actually everyone was laughing and then someone posted a photo of their phase one xt saying “you’re still poor”, and cinefag immediately posted a photo of your dog next to a bloodhound with a handwritten note saying “you sold me your beloved leo for this? oh well, i dont give a fuck, I’m rich. -K~~ R~~~~~~~”. The exif said fujifilm gfx100s. You instantly had a meltdown threatening suicide and stopped posting. After that cinefag posted a bunch of crewdson style 8x10 scans of your dog and his bloodhound at dramatized dog park scenes.

It was a pretty funny dream.

He isnt really interested in photography or art. He bought a camera just to post on /p/ with his /dog/ (aka /zoo/) buttbuddies.

Photography has been a passion/hobby of mine for years, and I took a long break from it to return about a year ago. I've probably spent more time doing photography, and making prints than a lot of people on here. My estimate is in the 3-5 thousand hour range.

Cool! Ty! Those are really sweet moon pics.

Sadly the nikkor 1200mm 4x5 lens is too much for me to justify a purchase at 2k-3.5k. At 1200mm the widest aperture is f/18! Way too niche.

A 2x teleconverter for my 70-200 is very tempting. Do you know if the canon 2x teleconverter ii/iii is any good?

Old-fashioned camera tricks are still the best camera tricks.

You can tell becuase the moon is slightly off centre - and the glare of the moon on the wide-angle shot is still just about visible at the top of the image.

I got a 150-500 primarily for shooting birds, but I also use it to shoot some "street" photography. I personally love the compressed look I can get from it.

I usually have to zoom to 500 for birds, and often use only 150 for people.

Thanks for the interesting observation. I fancy myself a "street" photographer so I actually like having people in my photos. That said, I took photos of that scene mainly for the shapes and I didn't even see the lady at the time.

To answer your question, I might have another photo of the same composition without people since I have to shoot in bursts, but I don't have access to my files at the moment.

That's fair. I think that the part I really like about it is how disorienting it is, almost like when you put a mirror in front of a mirror, the buildings being compressed into a colossal wall and the perfect repetition on street lights on the left and right sides, almost like they were cut and paste in. But the woman and her dog is orienting and grounding, suddenly my brain can more easily make sense of what I'm looking at.

I suppose there is a narrative in there about the highly complex and incomprehensibility of the world in which we have created and that we pass through completely unaware of the vast unknowability of it. But I've never really been crazy about 'narrative' photos.I prefer to feel the feelings first hand.

Overall a very cool photo

What I really hate about the Bigma is the abysmal background out of focus performance, if it is not harsh busy bokeh then it is anxiety inducing double bokeh, especially doing wildlife with branches in the background.
My old ass photos taken on APS-C. Startled roe running away from me, startled me trying to hip track the thing, forgot to properly set exposure and switch off the OS so the background is a little bit shaky and the roe is very much motion blurred. But somehow I love this one shot from the burst, the colors are just right. Spray and pray sometimes works out.

All modern pentax lenses are just like this

The hd d fa star awhatever 70-200 f2.8 is even worse - its actually unusable on aspc. Only the biggest FF zoom they make is actually somewhat sharp

That's not flare, that's purple fringing. Most modern lenses do it on your mirrorless but you don't see it because manufacturers go with baked in processing with chromatic aberrations, also with lens distortions.

For doing shots of the moon, planets, birds and other wildlife, can a big zoomy prime lens do all that? Like what is a good one?
>>

200mm prime to suffer
400mm prime to be ok

what's the plan?
Whole sky? regular lenses are OK, wide angles are better
The moon? similar to birbing
A solar planet? 1m or above
>>
>>4300036
I've been considering going birding with a nikon 300 PF. I used a 500mm prime before and sometimes the birds landed too close to even focus on them.

Also, cheaper, smaller, and higher quality than zooms and micro four thirds.

The pentax K#0 cameras all had defective chinese aperture solenoids that eventually fail. Only buy the single digit cameras.

KP > K3iii just for the screen alone, and the k1ii and K3iii have forced noise reduction because ricoh was desperate for a gimmick.

And this is with the 36" (~914mm), stopped down to around f/8-9. It's not that great but honestly I was expecting worse from an 80+ year old lens.

I took off the front element to give it a good clean out and I thought there was oil on the inside from the aperture blades, however it seems like it's actually a coating that has come away in areas, looks like it may have even had some fungus cleaned off in the past. Does it seem viable that a lens this old would have been coated?

You’ll regret not having an articulating or tilting screen. Pentax is a fucking joke and the speed and accuracy of their best AF makes a canon 6d feel like a snoy a1 anyways.

This was the description from another one that I saw for sale. Obviously not a one of a kind and no I didn't pay anywhere near $2k, closer to $100. The actual lens stops a couple inches rearward of the second flange (the further forward one with the rod sticking out is the aperture control), bolted to that flange and extended backward is a series of PVC pipes glued together and a focussing helicoid scavenged from another lens (all work of the previous owner).
>>
>>4300381
I knew it had to be some sort of old military equipment. That thing is ridiculous.
>>
>>4300365
Is the screen that important? I’ve never had a dslr before so I wouldn’t know. What do you use it for? Like using live view when you can’t use the viewfinder? the canon 6d is a good alternative?

Anyone have or used the Sony FE 100-400 by any chance? Would you recommend it? I can't choose between that or the 70-200ii
>>
>>4300398
If you're considering spending that sort of money then you should know what you need the lens for and what you need from the lens. Do you need f/2.8 at 200mm? Then you can't go for the cheaper option of the 100-400mm. Do you need 400mm? Then you're paying significantly more for the 70-200mm and a 2x TC, you can probably find image quality comparisons but I have a feeling it's probably not better enough to justify the cost. Unless you're in the situation where you need both of those things for different scenarios.
>>
>>4300463
>Do you need f/2.8 at 200mm
Nah, I only shoot in the day so that's not really an issue. I ended up ordering the 100-400, seems to make more sense for what I want, thanks!

The sony 100-400 is good, you'll be stoked.
The 70-200ii is probably one of the sharpest zooms I've ever seen though, and focuses wicked fahst, don't try one if you don't want to end up owning both.

very nice, love the >o face, like the dramatic lighting.
Looking at the histogram you can recover some more details from the shadows as both the stick and the legs are very dark and might help bring the focus more towards the head unless this is the light expression you're looking for. I did a quick edit from the jpeg with some light level and lighting curve adjustments if you'd like to see what I'm talking about.

more zoom range less quality as a general rule may not hold up as well as it used to with modern mirrorless first party lenses but it definitely holds up with scamron

get yourself a better lens than that. with these fuck off huge tiny bird lenses bokeh quality does matter a bit because at f/11 it's still 3/4s of the image.

Wrong take in this instance. Generally, sure. But in reality, that tamron is a good modern lense and will be a massive upgrade in every way, the sony kit lenses are dogshit.
Size, weight, and price wise, it's probably the best choice for you at the moment, but long term you're probably better off choosing full-frame lenses, as it makes no sense at all to shoot a crop-sensor sony.
>if you're happy with a small, light, cheap camera with mid IQ, get it, if you're aiming higher then keep saving and skip the middleman

Thanks <3

>it makes no sense at all to shoot a crop-sensor sony.

Yep, mostly I know. I would go for an a7cII but it's expensive. =( Moreover I would drop to 15 MP cropping to aps-c so I would need to change all my lenses:

Sigma 30 f/2.8 -> Sony 50 f/1.8 -> 200€ NICE!
Samyang 12 f/2 manual -> sony 14mm f/1.8 or Laowa 10mm f/2.8 -> 1400€ or 800€ FUCK
Sony 20 f/2.8 small pancake -> Samyang 35 f/2.8 -> 200€ ok, for pocketability
Sony 55-210 f/4.5-6.3 -> Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 > *-450mm f/high in FF -> a kidney ç_ç
I have some other toy lenses that I love, like the 7Artisans 7.5 fish, that I will not be able to move to FF.

Moreover the lenses would be way bigger.

But I'm really open to any suggestion, even in canon or nikon.

Yeah, it's definitely very stupid to set out to build a whole kit of povo lenses.
Just buy the superzoom and use it until you're not so fucking broke.
>>
>>4304162
While it is nice to have full frame, it does have its advantages, I wouldn't get that hung up about sticking with APS-C. It's still very capable, you've got sensor performance only a stop behind the better of the full frame DSLRs and no one was complaining about those, and those didn't have IBIS and the AF sucked in comparison. And you also have a legitimate reach advantage with crop sensors unless you were comparing an old low res sensor to a modern high res full frame.

the sony 70-350 is pretty good for being so small.
I wouldn't feel the pressure to jump to full frame, APS-C is great for birding.

why f14? Couldn't you reach the hyperfocal distance at more like f8? maybe even less? The grain kinda nukes that image and makes it harder to correct colors, not to mention you are probably losing sharpness by f14

forgive me if I am missing something

What is the heat source here?
>>
>>4300232
So it was made for large format, I assume all the things attached to the back leading to a 35mm camera are additions to shrink the image circle to 35mm?
Sounds like the original lens was made for big film and the rest of that shit is added later.

What's the equivalent focal length?
>>
>>4307614
Here's some more info >>4300381
There are no additional optics added to the lenses so it's still a ~900mm f/6.3
>>
>>4300238
how old? they started single coating in the 60s as far as I'm aware
>>
>>4307645
It was apparently used during WWII, so 40s at the latest
>>
>>4307651
hmmm apparently coatings were invented in 1935 but didn't get popular in Europe until after the war with Zeiss T* but wasn't common in Japan until the 60s... you know we kinda nuked and occupied them and all that. So I doubt it has any, and explains the very white veiling flare. 914mm-fag pls take a photo facing away from the sun/light, i'm curious. Where was it made???

Mine isn't branded but it looks very similar to ones listed as Dallmeyer (although those also don't say that on them, so not sure where the sellers are getting that info from) and those would be British. It was very overcast that day so that's about as good as it's gonna get. Here's the best photo I could get of the inside of the front element, the darker regions being what appears to be the coating that has been rubbed away towards the centre of the lens and then in patches where fungus possibly was.
