Hi /p/

Two weeks ago I was attending Japanese culture festival in my city and I wanted to upload some of the photos I made to ask you for your opinion. I honestly think I should made better ones so any advise is welcomed. I regret actually taking only 24-120 f/4 lens with me, especially in-doors I would really make use of something more like 70-200 2.8 but wanted to carry less weight for whole day.

Hope its not a problem if I would try to pload ~50 photos one after another. If it actually is, just say so. Thanks in advance for any reply.

Okay, I guess I should overall keep size lower for high ISO ones, since noise removal in Darktable makes them look somewhat "melty". But I don't know better method for dealing with low light photos when I can't use flash.

Overall had problems with this case and wanted to ask for any suggestions on how to improve it next time, aside from picking faster lens. Normally, I set mode to manual with 2.8 aperture and 1/200 or 1/320 (depending on situation) and automatic ISO (with upper limit of 6400) with point measurement. I assumed that this setting would allow me to focus on taking right shoot at right moment without focusing too much on settings at the moment - previously when I tried to use shutter mode, camera would refuse to take a shoot sometimes (probably trying to set aperture wider than possible) and when at aperture mode - I had to constantly modify ISO to keep shutter speed fast. I know that automatic systems are not perfect but I keep running into situation where camera try to overexposure scene and as a result set ISO too high and such performances often have multicolored light which further confuse system.

Anyone had similar problems and found good solution?

I do a lot of live music photography, which tents to have lighting more like this one >>4334110

Some of it depends on how much you are able to move around and how close you can get.
I really like using my 50mm (~80mm on my crop) 1.8 for most shows. I leave the aperture at 1.8 most of the time, shutter 1/200 to 1/100, and have the auto ISO range 100-1600. If the venue is crazy dark I will let the ISO go higher, but the subject is normally the only thing with lighting, so it isn't often hard to work under 1600 iso.

If you are using a zoom lens and your apertures are 4 or 5.6, you'll likely need up to 6400 iso, really depends on how close you can get and such.

Aperture is determined by your desired DOF. Shutter speed is determined by your motion blur. After determining those two, let ISO climb as high as it needs to in order to get your shot. Noise is often one of the last things to ruin a good shot. Manual mode with auto iso is a good strategy.

Reds and oranges are going nuclear, almost to ken rockwell levels, blues and greens are kind of gross. Overall it looks more like panusonic color than nikon color.
Your NR is very smeary and unnatural, mild NR that looks like grain would be better at any size
Sharpening is ???? nonexistent or not well applied (it's a myth that sharpening is "fixing in post", it's a mandatory part of both demosaicing and resizing)

Color is the single most important aspect of IQ, the other two could be ignored if your photos were viewed on a small screen. I recommend not shooting raw.

JPEGs wont be any better, believe me. I was shooting in jpg before and there are cases where I need to fix stuff I didnt notice before like white balance or over/underexposure.

Im guessing these problems you mention could be fixed rather by using different settings in Darktable. Currently I use imported base curve out of dtstyle.net for D750, no idea if I should use different ones. But do you see this problem in all photos or just these made under artificial light? Out of software, I also have Corel Photoshoot but it was not handling denoising better. So, whenever I like it or not, Darktable is the only option for me.

Making the correct settings for a camera from scratch requires hours with test charts and colorimeters, observing on a calibrated display. Luminance dependent hue shifts, all that jazz. Nikon already did all this for jpeg, and to use it you just need to learn to expose a photo correctly and toggle white balance (AWB chagnes WB when lighting doesnt change). The cost of that software is part of the cost of the camera.

Shooting raw means your photos will only be processed as well as the program you choose and darktable is not photographer friendly. It's great for people who use cameras as scanners, however.

But I WILL make mistakes from time to time. It is unavoidable. I don't want to lose photo simply because at that very moment conditions confused metering system. And people do use Darktable with success so I do agree its skill issue but rather my inability to use software properly.

One genuinely darktable specific thing is the noise reduction is just not very good with that program. Here it looks a bit iphonelike.
The oranges are now more dead and the reds are still going nuts. It's definitely a photo but it's not the level of color goodness that camera should achieve.

Again, i don't think you want to learn camera calibration, or rely on fosstards attempting it, experts are paid to create profiles for raw processors for a reason and quality software costs money for a reason, including the camera firmware.

You can also shoot raw and process NEFs on the camera instead of using dorktable

Which is weird because when I tried denoising in Corel Paintshop, it was actually performing worse. And which ones, in your opinion, actually perform it well?

There is also problem with different light, which was changing between blue/purple and red during performance. Is this one, took outside at natural light, also overblown?

one of the worst things you can do for natural color in digital photography is correct light that isn't meant to be white. there's only ever one light source that is meant to be white, WB doesnt move for the others. and be careful with tints. magenta and green tints are actually emulating gel filters used to tone down peaky light sources like fluorescents. sometimes there is no white light, like when you're under streetlights, and WB is set relative to true white (natural light) if it were there, ie: 5200k at noon, 5600k in the evening, <4800 after the sun goes down unless you're making creative decisions.

looks drab, dead, and the detail rendering is really shit, worse than a fuji jpeg. blotchy skin tones with too much orange too, contrasting against dead beige. this looks very little like you used a ff nikon dslr brother. if you're going to shoot raw to cope with exposure mistakes, use the NEF processing on the camera or the free nikon editor (like nx studio) which mostly does the same thing. at least the color profiles will be correct for the camera and give you a better base to work with.

When I was reading Ross Hoddinott book about photography, he literally recomended Corel PS as "cheap alternative for Lightroom". Out of ones you mentioned, I see that Dxo don't cost arm and leg, is this one really worth paying for?

You probably don't have an accurate or calibrated display, in which case don't shoot raw, especially not with a program which leaves you to compile your own color science from source.

I calibrate my display weekly because I take a lot of photos for friends and family and print them out, and people like their skin tones to not lean into extremes or for their beloved blue car to look teal, but most of the time nikon's official colors would actually be close enough. Maybe a little too red for some people who don't like that they're as red as they are. And better than eggy tier colors.

Okay, to use same thread instead of making new one, did some tests with installing new Darktable version on laptop (normally I work on 2.6, it now have 4.6 or something) and Im honestly feeling both irritated and helpless.

No matter what settings I try, each time I attempt to use color profile extracted from Nikon photo with NX Studio, it always ends up with either all colors washed out greatly or way too dark (and attempting to use "unbreak input color profile" function ends with overblown lights no matter what. Worse yet, each new DT version seems to replace, add or remove modules which means I can't even use same methods as with 2.6 to get colors close to original Nikon ones. When I try to find answers on search egnine, I 7+ years old posts about people using default settings or importing color profiles without fuss and getting same results. DT manual explains nothing and even refers to some old sister project "for more info". Not to mention YT "tutorials" with 1.5h lectures about color theory instead of just telling what needs to be done.

Either Im stuck with old Darktable and different colors or I will have to do bulk if not all the work with NX Studio now. I honestly don't now what to do. Here is one example.
