Portraits can be hard to get into I think. It's easy to ask random people on the street since you don't know them/won't see them again, but it feels awkward as shit to try and ask people you know.

True. I've asked my acquaintaces and just a couple have helped but I would need even more models in order to build my portfolio. Guess I will have to pay for them models.

Just remember that the IG feeds are curated from any of these anons' work over the years.

Most of the ones I post on mine are from the last two years or more, and are thoughtfully chosen from the thousands of the photos I take. And I even plan my grid in advance with a planner app (Planoly and Plann), because I want mine to look nice. To me, it functions as a gallery or portfolio exhibition.

Really, if you do want to take photos you like, you have to get out there and just shoot, and then put some thought into choosing which photos you want to show to the world. I heard from some Youtube guy that "you are remembered for your best photos," and I remind myself that constantly so I don't just put out any random shit just for the sake of it.

Instagram is very dead for photography. You can't share photos with non-insta users. You can't share full sized photos with anyone. It's a website that uses its users as advertising to collect other peoples data. So, anyone who still uses it has probably been using it for over 5 years.
>>
>>4341507

>>
>>4341310
stop snapshitting then.
think about composition and light before you even put the camera to your eye.
infact, you dont even need the camera.
learn about good composition, read some articles. look at some classic paintings. watch movies with great cinematography.
then, in your daily life, start looking for it in the environment around you. imagine good photos.
it's not a game of chance.

Just started using the profile I made in high school and never used so I can share my photos with all the people who ask if I have an instagram. I’m still working on uploading my “good” pictures so it’s not all of my best work, but it’s a start.
That being said please roast me a little so I can get better, it’s all 35mm

Closer or further away is subjective. If you really want the subject to be seen, you're going pretty good. I'd personally scale back just a little for breathing room but that's just my subjective opinion.

on IG wide pics tend to squish a lot of details on the subject
and most of the time the background isn't that interesting, it's just tree branches
so i try to crop in as much as the detail allows with a bit of breathing room
i normally include a wide pic at the end of the carousel to make up for it

here is the uncropped version of my recent post for example
i wasn't as close as i'd like to be, but it was a clear shot

>print off 30+ pictures of peoples cars and motorcycles handing them out to people at the car meet write my instagram on the back
>not a single follow or even profile view/like on any of my posts

Damn, that's a bit deflating to say the least. My posts are not even getting a single like or even view it seems like by anyone. I am using a decent amount of tags but nothings really happened since I have made a few posts.
>>
>>4345706
What demographic though? Boomers don't use it and a lot of carbros don't have Instagram. I'm a car guy myself but a lot of my friends don't have IG and have no interest in it, and just use Facebook.

Funnily enough, the only car related instagram photos I see are from photographers and never normies that own a car.
>>
>>4345713

Not boomer cars, younger people cars JDM etc all kinds of newer stuff not just some boomer meet where half the boomers have never even been on instagram obviously.
>>
>>4345715
That can still be hit and miss, I only know one or two car guys that have IG (and I mean guys under 30, not boomers)
I did street portraits for a while and I'd always get follows and business that followed later, but cars seemed to be a dead market. I think car guys tend to just take photos of their own cars.
>>
>>4345717

It just seems bizarre, almost every single car had their IG plastered on it and I usually take a pic of it to then tag them in the photos later on IG and I did that and doesn't seem to have even helped. I don't know, maybe people see I have 3 followers and just don't care or something. The car meet was plastered on IG, it's how I found out about it, seemed like every single person there had an IG.
>>
>>4345719
>almost every single car had their IG plastered on it and I usually take a pic of it to then tag them in the photos later on IG and I did that and doesn't seem to have even helped
Alright in that case, that's pretty weird, usually at least one should follow. I suppose it could be the low follower count? I'm not sure, but that is really surprising.

Yeah, I don't know either. No idea how to properly grow a page really, I guess I just have to keep going out to car meets and taking pics. But still thought people would think it's cool getting physical pics, which people did they seemed thankful and surprised by them and thought they were sick. But then they don't even like the post I tagged them in for the pics or even look at it for all I know.
>>
>>4345723
Things haved changed a lot with IG. Back in the day, I'd get followers just from tags, but that has pretty much died. Every follower I get now is from here, friends or people I meet IRL that I take photos for/of.
I think try and grow your folio, post in IG threads here and get some photo advice from /rpt/. In saying that too, don't take everything to heart that /p/ says, some posters can be assholes sometimes.
>>

>>

Yeah, it would seem IG is used a lot less now. I just have no idea where else to post pics that normies/semi-normies will see. I don't want to get BTFO too hard posting shit pics and my IG with 3 followers, but maybe I will post it.

So far i have the most followers in this thread, ill tell you what i know

>interact in your niche
find other people who do car photos, follow them and spam them with likes, comment something like "great shots"
use hashtags or find a popular account and go through their comments to find more accounts in your niche
don't follow the giant accounts, look at the follower ratio, if it's pretty close they should follow back

>DON'T do follow 4 follow with randoms
this will kill your post engagement, many people just unfollow anyway.
instagram shows your post to like 20% (IDK exact number) of your followers, if they like it, instagram will show it to another 20%.
if enough of your followers like it, instagram will show it to people who aren't following you. if they like it, instagram shows it to more, that's how it works.
your followers need to interact with your posts otherwise they are halting your overall reach.

>use a set of tiny hashtags
you will never show up on a popular hashtag, use specific #s like the exact model of car, brand, and location - not #cars #carmeet
20 hashtags is ideal. just steal hashtags from other accounts. keep a big rotation, i have a word document with 4 sets of 20 i use
some people don't use hashtags at all, but its a tiny bit more reach

There is a cheese method that will get you loads of (inactive) followers extremely fast, but i don't recommend it at all since it will kill your engagement, and most will unfollow
there are about 1000 self-promo posts like this: https://www.instagram.com/p/C6eQeiWLQqL/
all you have to do is spam like recent comments and people will follow (and then probably unfollow when you post something and they realize you didn't follow back)
don't like more than 50 in 30min or IG will limit your account. THIS CAN FUCK YOUR ACCOUNT it took me months to get back to my usual engagement after stopping
>>
>>4345739
here is the peak of the cheese method, i think about 1200 unfollowed in total
you'd have to keep doing it to maintain followers, in the end i didn't get many more than i started with
but if you just want to get to 10k for some sponsor deal, this is a easy way (10k is usually minimum requirement)
like i said tho, wouldn't recommend, easily biggest mistake i made on IG
>>
>>4345739
damn this is some mental illness
>>
>>4345739
Cheers for the info anon, seems about the same as trying to grow a twitter and an onlyfans. Looks fuckin daunting to anyone new to this shit but once you slap together a google doc of tags to rotate, potential captions, all the annoying work is done in one sitting now you just copy-paste and watch your ratio
It's honestly all fucking cancer but it is what it is, if you want people to actually see your photos.
>>
>>4345753
>if you want people to actually see your photos.
But people won't. People can't even look at them. They get a login prompt, see the meta logo hiding like a little criminal, remember what mark zuckerberg looks and acts like, and go back to youtube.

Only instagram bots will see your shit. If you actually want exposure you need to start a youtube channel. Instagram accounts are just glorified ads for youtube channels to try and target the pseudo-rich (doom spending) milennial retards that still use instagram.
>>
>>4345739
Nice info, thanks for the writeup
>>
>>4345739
My photography isn't a source of income for me, only mainly as a "I wish more people saw my work and appreciated it" thing, so I'm not going to go through all this effort. It's simply too much for me. I would rather spend some extra cash to have my photos boosted within Instagram, which I do sometimes. It's essentially pay-to-win, or to pay to skip doing all of that effort.

But appreciate the effort to write all that out, anon. I'm sure someone will be able to make use of that.
>>
i forgot to mention reels

IG reels show your posts to non followers at a much much higher rate
lots of people just make slideshows or do a shitty intro posing the camera then showing the shot
you really need an interesting hook tho, cause IG reels is ADHD scroller central
same algorithm applies, the more people who like it the more its promoted
if you have a video camera it's worth giving reels a shot

>>4345759
people who use instagram see it. most young people use instagram, a majority even.
make your own website if the gatekeeping popup annoys you, plenty of free hosts and not too hard to set up a basic photo catalog. but there's nothing social about it and you would have to direct people to it from somewhere else

youtube is a different ballpark, and hard for someone who doesn't do video
ive tried using a gopro and wildlife"photovlogging" but unless something interesting happens, why would anyone watch it

>>4345753
yep that's pretty much it, just copy paste hashtags and follow a few related accounts in your spare time

>>4345777
be aware with boosted posts they crop it wrong, so many times ive gotten an ad that's completely cut in half cause it wasn't meant for IG reels
IG also puts in shitty elevator music on ads
and they artificially lower your reach after your boost ends, so you buy more boosts
plenty of people have had decent engagement, bought a boost, then drop to way worse engagement than they started with

i agree though, all this shit is basically digital marketing and you can just skip it by using ads
issue is if the ads don't get you anywhere, your just donating to a megacorp
>>
>>4345706
maybe it's a skill issue. post an example of your car photos
i gained 45 followers just from walking around with a camera and talking to people. in fact the main reason i made an ig was strangers kept asking if i posted anywhere and to see my stuff
>>
>>4339181
I cannot imagine the fucking mindset it would take to in 2024, spend time posting pics on tiktok & insta, jfc.

That's potentially true, don't get me wrong I don't fuckin like Instagram, I haven't even started building one yet. But from my experience if you want one platform to do well, YouTube, whatever. You are going to want to have all other social media platforms to try and funnel people towards it. Once one takes off you can kinda stop but just waiting for the algorithm to start pushing your shit on one platform doesn't always work anymore. It's a load of dystopian bullshit but hey

Unusual question but - do I actually NEED IG for showing off photos? I mean, I was uploading all galleries to my own private site for years, without any IG/FB accounts after having two misadventures with their anti-bot system. I finally managed to make FB account that was NOT auto-blocked (it triggered anti-bot system anyway but this time it was unlocked after sending photo instead of asking for ID scan) and I'm kinda afraid of using it for IG as well. But at the other hand, I do want people to see my photos, I normally don't have anyone outside of 4chan that would look at them.

Shitty as it may be, it seems like IG is probably the best chance most of us have to show our ““““““art”””””” to normies and get it out in the world. Having your own site is fine if you can direct people to it and generate traffic but it’s pointless otherwise.

Is it a bad idea to have lots of genres in one insta? I do wildlife, concert and occasional portrait photography. The wildlife stuff is my passion and it's what is most accessible to me however I have a goal to get paid work doing concert photography.

Is it off-putting to potential clients to have bird photos dispersed throughout my concert photos?
>>
>>4346801
It's fine imo. I typically do sets of 3 for everything so my timeline looks consistent as people scroll through my profile.
>>
>>4346801
it could be, but its still probably better to have 1 big account instead of 3 smaller split ones

if someone i follow for wildlife keeps posting a load of non-wildlife shit i tend to unfollow
i dont think it would matter for clients though, as long as it isnt completely buried by other posts

>>
>>4350148
It's a worlwide social network, so basically everyone felt like they had to be in it. Everyone on it tells you you have to reach a bigger audience. Yet they realise that big audience, paid or not, does not bring much in itself. So 5K followers could eventually equal a 100 people reach on facebook if they don't react to your pics or pay you for photography or something else.
It's just whatever works.

Kinda stupid situation when you don't really want to give Meta your photos or have to fight against their anti-bot systems.

I knew a coworker who would pick up girls by talking to them, but instead of asking for a number, he'd ask for their IG. The he'd talk to them through IG and get their number for a date.
It's like a social buffer for most, you give your direct number to those you like and your social media for those you maybe might like.

In my mind, I’m committed to finally switching to 500px this year. I already quit contributing my work to the amateur content funnel that is insta last year, but actually making a real portfolio to upload to an actual pro photo site is a fucking daunting task.

>actually making a real portfolio to upload to an actual pro photo site
most people who really get exposure have
>website (professional portfolio)
>flickr (actual photo sharing, optional)
>instagram (advertising and just a low grade mirror of flickr posts to maximize noticing, required)
>youtube (apparently essential, these days, because the personal is now the professional)
>>

Yeah neat. Most people are not working photographers. I have a business to run. My business website is fine. Fuck babysitting social media sharing sites, they don’t drive sales or traffic bc they’re an ocean of snapshittery. Nearly all my work comes from repeat corporate clients anyway, so if I do one photo service that’s going to be it, and the only one that’s actually geared toward pros it 500px.

I am referring to working photographers. Babysitting social media sites is part of the job. It does drive sales and traffic.

But like, good ones. Annie Leibovitz, Alan Schaller, Tim Walker good ones, not thistown id photos inc.
>>
>>4352649
>good ones. Annie Leibovitz
OH NO HAHAHHA
>>
>>4352649
>teenage understanding of business
This is the perspective of a stupid kid with no sense of time or proportion.
>>
>>4352650
Annie's a multimillionaire who gets paid to press a button and let a bunch of nobodies make an iphone tier photo of famous people out of whatever was on her CF card, you talk about repeat corporate clients

Building personal brands matters like it or not
>>

>white borders
i feel like this is dumb
your making an already tiny image even smaller for viewing
>>
>>4352735
insta isnt for viewing photos its for publicly noting that you like a photo
>>
>>4352735
Maybe, but I don't want them to be cropped, so I made my choice.
>>
>>4352639
I don't see how youtube plays in that? Might as well have a spotify link on your website if the personal is that important?
But then if the optional becomes essential...everything is?
>>
>>4352634
So what's your insta?
>>
>>4352624
thats a clever idea anon thank you

>>
Been a year or so since the last time I posted mine here.
@magnusferdinand
>>
Why would I upload a high quality, carefully framed and composed picture to such a shitty platform as IG which will compress and crop the shit out of any decent material. Are people really this stupid?
>>
>>4353732
>my building corner snapshits deseve better
Nigger lol

Hah. I honestly can't remember if the people I follow on IG are from 4chan, reddit, or some other place. Thanks, friend.

I love photography more than I love myself but I am NOT exposing my work on this hellsite. lmao. y'all are much stronger than I
>>

A NAS is unironically the correct solution. Don't know how to set one up? Then you're a Luddite and/or poor. Just set one up then use a L2TP tunnel to your phone

Not at all, lol

>why would anyone watch it
I think it helps if you go in with a concept to talk about or some idea or technique or image subject or just yap about what happened on that day. The crazy homless person you ran into, the snack or drink you had on the way, the reason you picked a particular thing to photograph beyond it looking interesting. Treat it as a type of voice journaling.

Slap a low fi piano jazz or twee indie pop on the background audio and you have something people can either watch attentively or play in the background as filler which still counts as a view.

Hello guys,

I'm a wildlife photographer working in conservation, trying to get better at wildlife and macro photography though sometimes I'll do other stuff.
I feel a bit stuck in the way I don't have photographer friends to speak to or get feedback from, so feel free to give me constructive feedback.
Only recently started uploading my stuff so there's not a huge amount on it yet.

Feel free to pm me as well if you want to discuss anything.
