Hi /p/

Something like month ago I made photo dump thread about (japanese) culture festival, now I would like to make similar thread about anime con I attented last week and just finished dealing with all photos. I would like to hear your opinions about these selected few so I could improve and do better next time. I did apply some of your suggestions from last thread, mainly about denoising and color profiles and tried using different software for dealing with RAWs than Darktable, Nikon own NX Studio in paricular. While I was unable to fully replicate their JPEGs colors, I think I came close, except reds. I also feel that my compostion is lacking. I will mention questions along with uploads. Thanks in advance for opinions.

I hope it won't be a problem to dump a lot of photos at once.

In previous years this particular con was taking place in private university, with lots of tree-rich outdoors areas but this time it was large trade exhibition building. When doing photos in situations like this, is there any good solution to shooting outside aside from approaching models and asking (either them or somebody else) for holding board reflector or similar accessory? There was little to no place with cover and Im still not confident in my own skills and myself to ask anyone to travel little way from main area. Lots of outside shots were done with these light conditions and you can see contrasting shadows on people faces, which I assume is not something desirable.

I was actually not asking beforehand but I also assumed I won't be allowed to use flash during performances inside building. Then again, even 1/400 was not enough for some of sword performances. I really wish I would have more light for these ones.

I also tried to export some photos to TIFF first from NX Studio and then work on them with Darktable later but Im not sure if this is good idea and not too time consuming. I heard about how Capture One and DXO are recommended now but I have to wait for either of them to go to sale first.

I also did photos at debut performance of idol group. At first I attached 70-200 2.8 lens but it quickly turned out that crowd was allowed to get very close to the scene, leaving only 2m wide space and similar corridor at the centre and at the sides. After first song, I switched it to 24-120 f/4 lens instead and Im sorry for forgetting advice from last thread about using some fast prime instead. I actually had 50mm 1.8 with me but completely forgot about it in nerves. Then again, with little space for moving (which was also occupied by two other photographers and one guy with camera on stick, who was moving from one side to another), I was afraid I wouldn't be able to properly "zoom with feet". Or it was bad decision? I admit I still had to shoot from very close and thus almost all photos are from shoot from high angle.

I also had problems with autofocus. I was convinced, based on JPEG previews on camera, that I was catching focus most of the time but at PC later I noticed a lot of pictures are slightly blurry as if AF was not actually catching what I wanted it to. Is this normal in poor light conditions? Or it could be something else?

I do it not to people shots but to shots when it's gloomy out and there's more tone and lines and textures in my shot than colors

Speaking of light, many performances, also on cosplay contest later on, had intense blue, blue-violet, green or red lights. These would pose a problem for Darktable but also NX Studio at some points, making final colors going "wild" and overblown, especially in areas with high contrast between shadows and highlights. Do you have any advices on how to deal with this next time? Sometimes I was changing color space from Nikon sRGB to their "Adobe RGB", in Darktable it would wash out colors but in very intense blue light it would also recover a lot of details, leaving only "cold" feeling, at least for me. But Im not sure if this is good solution and DT don't like changing color profile (no matter what I tried, simply changing it from default would make whole photo very dark and "unbreak color profile" module would instead make it overexposed and washed out from colors).

NX studio just is slow. it's a customised version of silkypix of japan, and the japs can't ever program properly for shit
still it lets me replicate in-camera settings and have color control points which is nice

Yes, this made me face dilemma - either I stick to Nikon own colors by working in NX or export to TIFF or I do everything in Darktable, accepting that I won't be able to get exactly same colors. Still figuring it out because there are viable arguments for both.

Many contestants had poor light during performances, usually background was very bright compared to them. I couldn't use flash in such case so don't really know if there are some methods for dealing with situation like this (aside from sticking to spot metering as ususal in dark rooms).

I went to anime boston last year, took some pics and had a good time but next year I probably won't bring a camera and just focus on enjoying the panels and gaming rooms. Some people were really fun to photograph, but all the gacha gooks were completely unapproachable for me and constantly surrounded by people with much nicer and more professional camera setups. I'll stick to my macro and landscape and leave shooting people to the professionals.

what baseline settings are you using?
your tone curve, tonemapping curve, and highlight reconstruction settings are all important for getting nice results from these kinds of lights

that said I often compress the dynamic range for these kinds of photos in post, exposure adjust (not too much) for subject and tone curve the upper end to taste

You mean base curve? In that case, I used to use their "D750" preset one instead of automatically applied "Nikon-like" but for these, I switched to "Nikon-like (alternative)" after noticing it matches camera JPGs better. Aside from that, I avoided changing more advanced settings like tone curve module and the like, outside of mentioning attempts to change color profile (which I agree I shouldn't do now). I admit I failed at finding too much info or resources/guides about handling Darktable at these tasks and mostly relay on own experimentations, only saw some videos on YT but their algorithm prefer to show clickbait ones first so no idea which ones are actually valuable and which ones contain 2h colour theory lectures before going straight to the point (and text is just better, I can't stand 2-5m long segments of mouse going in circles while voice-over narrates with lots of "uhm" and "eeeh").

But I will try to get back at that, now that I have more free time without any events on sight.

If you're using Base Curve (instead of Sigmoid or Filmic RGB- don't combine them), try setting the 'preserve color' setting in it from Luminance to None. Contrary to what you'd expect, doing so increases the color saturation with most base curve profiles and matches a camera's jpegs better while still allowing you to use all the other tweaks a raw converter like DT allows. This was actually a point of contention on the program's forum a while back- base curve is ostensibly meant to act as a starting point that resembles a camera's defaults hence all the manufacturer pre-sets, but the devs also have a massive hangup about keeping color, brightness, contrast, etc. all separate, so at some point they changed the 'keep colors' default option to keep more of the raw image and less of what base curve is actually trying to do. Hence why the default workflow period now in Darktable is auto-applying Filmic RGB and telling you to have fun changing 30 other settings to make it not deep-fried.

Believe it or not, trying to replicate the JPEG look is a waste of time.
It's not a good look.
It's not accurate.

For darktable the ideal thing to do is disable all modules but white balance and use a suitable demosaicing method (varies per image, depending on moire)
your image will look "flat" but that's just because you have a low contrast display
most images on digital display are overbaked and given fake contrast out the ass and that's what camera jpegs usually do out of the box unless you go in and fine tune the jpeg options to be less meme grade

if you could post raws (google drive maybe?) I could edit some how I'd do it and give details on what modules are used so you can replicate it on your end

A cos girl I took photos of is asking for me to take more photos in the city. I don't mind but I also don't work for free.

How do you guys effectively monetise cosplay con photography without doing contracts? I like cosplay/cons but I don't want to make con photography a super serious biz either.
It be nice to just pay for my gear and time if people really enjoy my photos I'd be happy.
How much to ask is too much? Cosplayers aren't models and I wouldn't treat them as such.

Who is this woman and what exactly is your relationship with her?
How did you find yourself in this situation and why do you even want to monetize this?
Are you even a good photographer worthy of being paid proper? or just a monkey with a cheap DSLR/mirrorless instead of a phone?

Except many times they literally are, and do it professionally as their primary job or a side hustle with things like Patreon, or OF, and exist off simp-bucks. Not all, but some. Many of them, not most, but still a surprising amount for it to be worth acknowledging.
Cosplay PORN is also big business for many and even con photos taken in public, SFW, may still wind up on their OF as "teasers" and such.

I'm not trying to come off as harsh but just honest.
Answer some of the questions above so we can get a better idea of the situation. You might be getting taken advantage of by some pro e-whore looking for free photos at your expense or you might have just impressed a casual cosplayer who genuinely just wants some more photos if you're available and maybe they're worth getting to know if they're not some OF whore.

I have a Red helium cine camera too but it was used high hours and bought it cheap. I'm not a pro, I got my gear to mostly do photos and vlogs in Japan. An extremely small number of cosplayers make any money if at all from it. Cosplay porn also is most certainly NOT a money making biz by any means OF included. Less than 98% of OF creators make more than $400 a month and that's if they are actively producing. Also OF is less about porn and more about this fake relationship shit. The few who make it *big* have actual marketers/teams or where already popular celebrities or pornstars. Unrelated OF is predatory to the creators too, it's a huge commission they take and they sell this "you can get rich scheme by selling nudes" scheme to honestly really dumb girls.
This is just someone I met that I chatted up becuase she had sexy/cute cosplay. I sent her the photos and she really liked them. Not a whole lot more honestly, other than just being friendly.

She did ask me if I was comfortable taking semi lewds but she didn't (that I know of) have an OF but did want to try to start a Kofi for her Nekopara set. I'd do it because what dude would say no?

Gotta think of it from her perspective as well.
She might just know you have a decent camera and like taking photos of cosplay girls. It could be as simple as that. Some people are willing to do free shoots with no strings attached as part of a mutual learning experience. If you're not that guy, you've gotta make that known.
A lot of people like taking photos at cons but don't like doing meetups since they can be hard to make time for such things if you have a busy schedule.

If you're free and willing and not shooting a pro with thousands of followers I'd say give it a go without looking for any compensation yet.
If there are any expenses you're not willing to ignore completely (like bridge tolls, parking, gas, etc) consider asking her to pay for those rather than the photography itself or have her come to you. Compensation for basics allows the requested meetup to be neutral and so can take it from there. Determine what to do next time if there are any.

Did you figure out whether she's single or not? Are you interested in her at all or not really?

Unless under contract with terms stating otherwise, you as the photographer will own all the rights to the photos (at least in the US) so you're not really at risk of losing anything. Even without payment you'll still have all the photos of what could be a cute girl in sexy outfits regardless of how it turns out, and considering she's looking to do sexy stuff it's kind of a win-win unless the tolls/commute is an issue.

The secret of using a flash is if you do it with enough confidence and competence, no one minds. And then you show them properly exposed sharp photos that you made with the light and they’re like, hell yeah. Invest in a compact but secure light stand (I like the Matthews 7’ reverse stand), one decent battery powered monolight (I like the profoto b10, but godox are also great on a budget), and a smallish modifier like a 2’ octa or stripbox, and a wireless trigger. Also don’t skimp on getting a boa bag or small shotbag to weight it down with. 5lb is enough.

All things considered, it's fine.
Could've been better. My recommendation would be to have tried to capture it in a way that doesn't look like shit. For example, if you're going to include people in the background, get at least one row of heads within the frame or none, not this one row of heads all with their tops just out of the picture. This looks awkward.

That's part of crowd photos though, you can't always focus on the subject and frame how you want without the background looking odd. Unless you open the lens (you can't, you're using a point and shit) with a real camera and use DOF to blur the crowd so it becomes irrelevant. This is basically equivalent to f/11 on full frame so everything is in acceptable focus and that's what makes the cropped heads in the background so bad. If this were fullframe f/4 the background people would likely look blurred enough to not look like bad framing.

Okay, thanks for advice. As for updating DT - like you noticed, there is more or less clear direction DT development is taking and I honestly don't like it. Back when I was starting to play with photography and using DT, I found it quite good and most basic functionality easy enough to use. But Im also testing 4.6 on laptop and I really don't like it. The biggest problem is how various modules gets straight out removed for being "outdated" but with alternatives, while probably offering much higher functionality, require spending some time on studying them, something I usually don't have time or will for, especially when something else already work. To give some example, something as basic as "contrast brightness saturation" module is marked as "outdated" and thus expected to be removed in next version. Manual says:

>contrast brightness saturation (deprecated) (...) this module is deprecated from darktable 4.4 and should no longer be used for new edits. Please use the color balance rgb module instead.

But at the very same time, "color balance rgb" module description in manual says:
>This module is not suitable for beginners with no prior knowledge of color theory, who might want to stick to the global chroma and global vibrance settings until they have a good understanding of the dimensions of color.

So they straight out removes easy and working tool in favour of tool that require thorough study of the issue. Same goes for "fill light" module ("use the tone equalizer module or the exposure module with a drawn mask"), splitting "crop and rotate" into three different modules or overall love for parametric masks, among other examples.

I will try to adjust, since I don't have to replace 2.6 on PC if I have laptop to experiment with but this looks disturbing.

That was my mistake in not exactly paying attention to auto ISO. When I shoot at low light conditions like that, I often set manual with 1/200 or 1/250 on 2.8 and auto-ISO so I can focus on capturing right moment. I lost too many shoots just because I was constantly checking if metering mode keep exposure time at right values on aperture mode and on shutter priority mode, camera would sometimes refuse to shoot if scene was too dark and aperture already at widest.

Glad to hear. Personally, I love taking shoots from afar or at people who accept being photographed but at that moment forgot about my or other photogs presence. People smile or laugh naturally, are relaxed and happy. Experienced cosplayers knows how to pose but people new to this are usually a bit stiff. Unfortunately, Im not very good at social stuff to guide them yet.

nah I meant the settings you / the software apply as a starting point when you import
like your default settings for tone curve, color/lens correction, denoise, etc.
if you don't have a good grasp on the adjustments you're starting with, it can make it much more difficult to "rescue" a shot taken in adverse lighting

I'm sure there are some good resources out there, I just don't have a list on-hand, I'll keep an eye out
as for tone curve specifically, I think it's one of the most useful tools for working with RAWs if used carefully
it's basically a way to adjust the exposure of each pixel as a function of that pixel's brightness, and that function is the curve you design
you can make bright areas darker while leaving mid/shadows alone, or raise shadows leaving mid/highlights alone, or anything in between

I configured darktable with minimal defaults and several custom selectable styles, all of which use sigmoid because the crosstalk in filmic does look like ass
and yes you're right (for OP's information) don't use them together — these three modules are the tonemappers which come at the end of your module stack to transform the scene-referred color data into display-referred
technically you can't view the image without one, if you have all three turned off then what you're seeing is the result of a "fake" tonemapping operation to get the numbers to fit your screen's pixels somehow

With starting, I usually only change basecurve from "Nikon-like" to "Nikon-like (alternative)", set "amaze" demosaic and activate lens corrections module, leving it otherwise unchanged. I used to instead changing basecurve to buildin "D750" line (resulting in brighter image but slightly "washed out" colors) along with "zone system" module with preset from "Anton D750" style (can't find it now, aparently dtstyle.net is not working anymore) but not anymore. I admit Im not touching tone curve module too much outside of ocassional gentle s-shape with otherwise default settings. I would often use equalizer too, mostly for sharpening.

But I will try to read more about it then, thank you for pointing this out. Sometimes I feel a little overwhelmed with too many tools at disposal.

I tried something like this with parametric mask and tone curve, both for brightening areas otherwise too dark or "cut" overexposed parts a bit to get back details. Many of pics from cosplay contest I posted here have it applied, otherwise contrast would be too great.

Not exactly, even if devs push "filmic rgb" module instead, which, at least for me, activate by default instead of base curve. And thank heavens its still there as I absolutely don't like how "filmic" turns image into flat and washed out version.

I appreciate you posted detailed info on steps taken. Personally I don't like the colors here (as somebody else pointed out, they look overly warm) but maybe thats fault of my monitor. But at the other hand, it could look like this on typical monitor as well (and I doubt cosplayers or their fans calibrate their displays). Its still valuable for me as example on how these settings work in practice.

You can always change the WB, but then Asuka wouldn't look right IMO.
Try the similar steps for including the wide tonal range then adjust colors how you see fit.

Almost every other edit has the sky BTFO or has meme contrast. The image was overexposed to begin with but there's always some leeway because you start over-exposing one color channel at a time at the sensor level, so "recovering" some things that are blown isn't always some form of "magic" or "ai fill" shit. In this case, you actually got the sky saved with vignetting. Enabling the lens correction brings that back into overblown highlights mode but that's why you dial it back with the exposure module.
A non-WB'd, passthrough demosaiced image shows the clouds so they're not too far gone even if some pixels clipped.

Don't let devs or retards bully you.
Filmic is not some new technology it's just a new way to process things. If you're not a fan of annihilated blacks and shadows it is objectively unusable as it is applied by default, but if you go into configuring it most of the problems can be solved.
Filmic will be the death of darktable if they ever force it. It's kind of a meme.

The shadows are all very soft and long, almost non-existent. The sun is far to the right behind probable cloud cover. It's a naturally warm scene.
This is essentially what you'd get shooting Nikon in Neutral style with WB set to Daylight. It's rather true to the scene, tint aside (which may have been better left at 0.98 or .985 I didn't do much fine tuning) and the other versions are objectively cold looking and inaccurate.

OP here, I went to another con last week and wanted to show couple of photos from there as well. To be honest, they are not my best work and I see lots of flaws and problems, not to mention that I was nervous enough to mess up a lot (like once completely forgetting to check ISO setting like some newbie and shooting at 100 ISO indoors without flash, getting blurred images due to too long shutter).

And Im still not quite sure why noticable part of stage photos have incorrect focus. This time light was mostly static (in post-production found out that it was almost always 3300K but auto-WB would often assume much higher values) and in NX Studio I could see that focus point was correctly set on performing person face. Photos are rather noisy, sure so it could be result of denoising work (I tried to keep it to minimum in DT) but still, its a bit odd. Later checked at home, from similar distances, if this lens correctly autofocus and it was quite accurate here.

Who or what is the blonde trying to cosplay as?
I played WoW and recognize all the items at least from when I played and that robe never existed in white. This must be a custom thing or some new character I'm not aware of.

Pic related is the Robe of Hoarse Breaths which is the green variant of it, there are a few but none are white/gold themed like this so this look isn't possible in game. Unless it's a new addition.

Seems like she did a good job but it looks like a priest with a druid staff and the item not actually existing in-game kind of ruins it IMO.

Honestly, no idea. Last time I played WoW was more than 10 years ago. I don't think jury knew either and awarded quality of their costumes. Like how I recall that blood elves (and they were introduced as such before performance) should have green eyes instead of blue. But costumes were well made and performance nice so I don't mind.

how do you even approach people for photos at cons?
